Output to an HDMI TV

Hello everyone,
I am wanting to connect my MacBook (Intel Core2 Duo 2Ghz) to my TV, a Pioneer PDP-434HDE (the actual box that all TV inputs are connected is the Pioneer PDP-R04E).
I have an Apple mini-DVI to DVI adapter, connected to a DVI-HDMI cable, which in turn is connected to the HDMI input of the PDP-R04E. The TV shows no image (just as if nothing was connected to the input) and the MacBook does not acknowledge the display; the Display System Preferences pane does not show it and it is not in the Displays menu bar item. The system profiler shows the 'Display Connector' as having 'No display connected'.
The thing is that I know what it should look like. The PDP-R04E also has a VGA input. I have an Apple mini-DVI to VGA adapter, which is connected to the PDP-R04E using a normal VGA cable. This works exactly as expected, with the PDP-R04E showing up in the Display System Preferences pane on its own window as well as being listed in the Displays menu bar item. The system profiler shows the PDP-R04E along with its technical details.
I am 100% sure the HDMI port on the TV is working as I can connect my DVD player and TV tuner to it okay. I am 100% sure that the mini-DVI port on the MacBook is working since I can use it to connect to the VGA input of the TV. The cable components have each been replaced at the Apple store several times, and I am fairly sure that they are not the source of the issue.
I desperately want to connect via HDMI because for reasons best known to themselves Pioneer put the VGA port at the front of the box (which is most unwieldy) while the HDMI port is sensibly at the back.
I have read through other people's DVI to HDMI issues and they are all lucky in that they are able to actually have their display recognised by the MacBook! So unfortunately they have been no help with my problem.
Any advice or tips would be gratefully received.

All I can tell you is what I experience. I connect as follows:
Macbook==> mini-DVI to DVI adapter ==> DVI to HDMI cable ==> Yamaha RX-V663 receiver HDMI in ==> HDMI cable out ==>Panasonic plasma
Once everything is on and the receiver properly switched to the right input and so on, my MacBook has no problem "seeing" the Panasonic and a panel for it shows up in Display Preferences along with the built-in "Color LCD".
If things get out of whack, and sometimes they do, it's because the Mac is detecting the RX-V663 as the display device and this will show up also in Display Preferences. The Mac sets a low resolution in this case and the image may not appear on the monitor. This may be what's going on in your case. Check Display Preferences and check video settings (ie. Are they different than the default?).
For me, the mismatch is easily cured by telling the Mac to "Detect Displays". This is the first menu choice on the menubar if you enable the "Show displays in menubar" in display preferences. The Mac will generally reconfigure as it finds the path all the way to the monitor. Unplugging and re-inserting the video adapter will accomplish the same thing.
If these don't work, the problem could be your Pioneer gear. On my Yamaha, specific inputs can be assigned to a specific menu choice. For instance "DVD" could be set up to accept component video from one of the component inputs and optical audio from one of the optical inputs. Or you could choose video over HDMI and audio over coaxial digital. There are any options, and the defaults are not always perfect for what you need to do. Maybe your Pioneer has something similar, and you just need to tell it what to do.

  • No output on Intel HDMI port

    Hello everyone,
I have recently build a new desktop system. So far everything seems to work fine accept that the Intel HD Graphics 4600 on my i7-4790K processor does not. The only display output on my motherboard (Asrock Z97 Anniversary) is HDMI. I've managed to install Arch by using my dedicated AMD graphics card.
It's like the issue described here but the solutions do not seem to work.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … modules.22
I want the Intel card to work because I want to pass-through the AMD PCIe card to a Windows VM for entertainment purposes. Currently I am using multiboot and Windows finds both of the graphics cards in the Device Manager so this is not a UEFI configuration issue.
Thanks for reading and if more information is needed I will be glad to provide it.
    Have a nice day,

MisterAnderson wrote:Is it normal to have the DVI output labelled as HDMI? On all my systems I'm sure they were labelled DVI-0 and the like.
I don't know if this is normal. In the bug report I've mentioned before the outputs are also labelled as HDMI-1 and HDMI-2.
Possibly the HDMI and DVI outputs are sharing the same controller? Does outputting both at the same time work in windows?
I didn't test it in Windows. However the intellinuxgraphics website suggests there is dual head support for the intel driver. In this example dual head is configured for LVDS and VGA, not for DVI and HDMI.
    [edit]
I've found this on the intel site:
Support for HDMI, DisplayPort*, eDP and DVI 2: High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) delivers uncompressed HD video and uncompressed multi-channel audio in a single cable, supporting all HD formats including 720p, 1080i and 1080p. Dual independent display expands the viewable workspace to two monitors.

  • Output timeline to HDMI monitor

    Hi
I am using PPRO CS 5.5 on PC and looking to upgrade to CS 6 when it comes out.
I would like to get an output to an HDMI monitor, and would probably need a card for that.
I have seen several cards on the web, but kind of unsure, which to chose. I only need preview output; no input.
    Thanks.

    Hi Harm
I want to look more into this solution, because I might get into trouble using a black magic intensity pro with a newer asus motherboard (the line of recommended boards is very narrow).
I have the GTX 570 installed in my PC and would install another GTX 4/5xx card too - so far so good :)
How would I get the timeline output on one of the outputs of this extra card? Should I put in a setting in PPRO?
    Thanks

  • No sound from optical output when using hdmi/dvi cable

I am trying to connect my apple tv2 to my B&O Beovision 7. I have used an HDMI to DVI cable which is working fine for the picture; but obviously DVI does not carry sound. I have therefore connected an optical cable to the digital optical output on the apple TV and put this through a converter to digital coax, which then goes in to the TV. I know the optical cable / converter set up works fine as I have tested it on my sky box and it works fine. But I get no sound from the apple TV - any ideas?

I hav exactly the same problem... Did you resolve this??

  • No choice of sound output with lightning HDMI adapter connected.

When the lightning HDMI adapter is plugged in, sound is piped through HDMI but I want the option to have the sound come through the iPad speaker, because the mini projector I use has only a 1 Watt speaker built-in, and the iPad sound is louder.  Anyone figure out how to choose speaker output?

I don't believe that is possible.
Does the projector have an audio output jack to connect powered speakers?

  • Switch iPad mini to PAL output through Lightning HDMI?

Hi, I want to use my iPad mini as a source to play my own backing footage into a TV studio. I'm using Apple's lighting to HDMI converter. When I hook it up to the Blackmagic TV studio it only works if I set the frame rate on the Studio  to 720p at 59.97 which I think is NTSC? As our cameras are all PAL they only output 25p or 50p so we can't use the iPad as an input. There used to be a way in the old IOS to choose between NTSC and PAL but that has gone in IOS 7, even with the adaptor connected. ANyone got any ideas on this, and suggestions gratefully accepted, thanks.

You can do what you want with the iPad mini. You will probably need some of the lightning cable adapters to connect to whatever equipment you are using.

  • RGB colour output format via HDMI/DP

    Hey Guys,
So i just bought a Dell u2410 screen the other day, and decided to hook it up via HDMI, It's being used for photo-editing, I tried to calibrate it, but in the sRGB mode i need to use the colours come out terrible, Reds are orange, etc. The screen itself, and it's settings arn't the problem. The problem is the Colour output of the MacBook, over HDMI and DisplayPort I've found it outputs the old YPbPr colour format, which for me is useless. if i connect it via VGA it'll output proper RGB colour format, but VGA is pretty crappy, and i ideally need to use a Digital output, I've searched all over the net for a solution, but haven't found one. one thing i did find is it will supposedly output RGB over DVI, but alas i don't have a DVI cable and do not wish to have to buy one...
so what i want to know, is it possible to change the output colour format for HDMI and DisplayPort to RGB instead of YPbPr?
Note 1: If i boot into Win7 via BootCamp it outputs RGB and has the option for YPbPr...
Note 2: It isn't the ICC colour profile that's the problem.

Thanks for the link to the Dell discussion forum.
Reading that thread and half a dozen others on the Apple forum is really a sad day for me, having owned every single iphone, ipad, Mac mini, MacBook Pro that Apple has put out, the latest Retina MBP has completely disappointed me. It seems neither Dell nor Apple care about the users who need the correct color space for digital photography.
I bought the latest and greatest MacBook Pro this year and it doesn't connect to an external monitor in the correct color space for me to do digital photography? This is really a sad situation. Will be returning it as soon as I migrate the data out.
I would gladly buy an Apple Thunderbolt display, but just can't stand its glare, not to mention it's limited resolution @2560x1200 which is smaller than the 30" @2560x1600.

  • No screensaver or sleep when outputting audio over HDMI

I am using a Mac Mini i5 2.5 running 10.8.2.  This is a new setup and I have tested it with a standard computer monitor and it works fine, however when I implement it in my home theater setup running into a Pioneer VSX-1325 receiver, which I use for my video and audio switching the screen saver will not turn on once I have played any audio over the HDMI (iTunes, Netflix... etc).  From a cold boot the screen saver will boot up, until I trigger any sustained audio (non-system sounds) through the HDMI connection... This includes web based audio as well.  Has anyone else experienced this?  For this is a major issue as this display is connected to a plasma TV and I can not rely on my wife to always use a hot corner.  I do not want any image persistence or burn-in on my display.  I should add the the screensaver function will resume after a period of time when there is no audio being output.

Apparently this was an issue in Lion as well.  Thread below, but can Apple fix this ASAP before I have a Plasma with burn-in?

  • I am not able to output audio over hdmi

I have a late 2010 15" macbook pro and a brand new mabook both running 10.6.7.  I purchased a Moshi hdmi adapter and a new set of v1.3 HDMI cables.  The macbook works as expected, so I know the adapter and cable are OK.  However, when I select my HDTV as the audio output on the macbook pro the sound continues to come out of the built in speakers (no sound on TV).

Yes I am aware about the flash format limitation, but in this case ( howjsay.com ) and bbc sites as well, but I don t know the format of these audio files.
Do you know a simple way I could recognize the format?
    Thanks

  • Apple TV keeps requiring full reset to output video via HDMI after update..

Never had this problem until after iphone 2 and latest itunes/itv update, but now I have to do a full reset of my Apple TV in order to get video output to work again. Once done, it works fine until I switch to another source and back again, then it again requires this reset. Again, I had never had the problem before the last update with the exact same equipment...
SIAP, but I didn't see anything else listed with the same problems...

I reply to myself, as I found a (however inconvenient) workaround. I have a Samsung LCD, I don't know about you logicguru. Say the Apple TV's HDMI source is HDMI1 and your cable whatever is on HDMI2. So I watch Apple TV on HDMI1, then flip over to another source. Now regularly one would keep pressing source to get back to HDMI1 to get back to Apple TV. Instead, I wait a couple of seconds, hit Menu on the Remote, select the Connections or whatever option at the bottom, go to Source there, and select HDMI1 there. Also, it only works when the Apple TV is in screensaver mode (I have the photo collection scrolling at this time). If I do the way detailed above, there's no problem going back to the white box. I think this can almost be considered as voodoo.

  • Outputting DVI to HDMI input in LCD TV versus using the DVI to RGB ?

I am thinking of buying a mac mini to connect to a Toshiba 20HL85 TV in the lounge primarily to act as a "media server" and accessing Front Row for music, photo's, DVD watching etc. The question is which connection to use to go from the mini to the TV for Video (audio is fine as it will route into my AV Receiver)? The TV has an HDMI input, component video, s-video and a VGA port. The user manual for the TV says:
Note: The HDMI jack is not intended for connection to and should not be used with a personal computer. For PC connection, use VGA cable and connect to the VGA port. The VGA port allows the following resolutions:
    Monitor Display modes:
    VGA 640x480 60Hz
    SVGA 800x600 56.3Hz
    SVGA 800x600 60.3Hz
    XGA 1024x768 60Hz
    WXGA 1280x720 60Hz
    WXGA 1280x768 60Hz
I wanted to know a few things as I have no experience with the MAC mini and HDMI:
    1. Will I not get a better/crisper/sharper picture if I connect through a digital port like HDMI versus going through the VGA port?
    2. I have checked a few LCD TV's user manuals and they all seem to say the same thing i.e. "Do not connect a PC to the HDMI port" - I fail to understand this when the Apple site specifically says under "accessories for the MAC mini" that "HDMI is electrically similar to DVI, but has a different physical connector that may include an audio signal. You’ll need a DVI to HDMI adapter, such as the Belkin PureAV HDMI to DVI cable to use these televisions".
    3. What am I missing? Should I just go ahead and buy the DVI to HDMI cable and MAC mini and plug it in i.e. has anyone done this and had it work? Is it better than VGA (I would hope so)?
Bottom line is does the MAC mini connect to any TV with an HDMI port or are there different types of HDMI ports and hence I need to search for the right TV first? If so, what must I look for? Thanks for any help I can get.
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

One word of advice. I just hooked up my mini to my 32" Lowe HD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable and it doesn't just work. The native resolution of the TV is not available for whatever reason so I have to bodge another resolution which looks terrible. When I plug my powerbook in via a DVI to VGA connector it just does work selecting the correct resolution automatically.
Either the problem lies with the mini or with connecting to the HDMI socket. As the HDMI is simply a dvi with audio I can't see why it would cause problems but who knows. Given all the other problems I am currently having with the mini I am pointing the finger in that direction currently.

  • MacBook Pro retina display goes black while outputting video through HDMI to external monitor??

I frequently connect my MacBook Pro to my 42inch Panasonic TV to watch movies/videos. I use VLC media player for all my playback. The problem I'm running into is that when I put VLC media player into fullscreen mode on my external display, my retina display goes black (I can still see the finder bar at the top and when I mouse down the dock appears but the rest of the display shows all black. If I click on Safari it will open but I can't see it on my MacBook display unless I take the external display out of fullscreen mode.
I would still like to be able to do things on my MacBook while video is playing. I've played around with the display settings but they're pretty limited and I can't figure out how to get it to work the way I'd like. I've seen people having up to 3 or 4 displays hooked up, I'm just trying to hookup one. I would consider this a severe limitation of OS X if I'm not able to separately manage the displays. Hopefully there is a setting or something I'm just not seeing. Thanks.

Yeah, fullscreen mode still doesn't play nice with multiple monitors. The common workaround is to stretch the window out to the edges of the screen instead of using actual fullscreen mode.

  • Mini-DVI to HDMI output to Philips HDTV not working with Yosemite

I've recently upgraded to the Yosemite OS, and was surprised to find out that the output to my Philips HDTV no longer works. I have a Mini-DVI to HDMI converter, which I then plug into the TV. Before the upgrade everything worked fine (I think I was running 10.7), however now it just says "Video format not supported". I've tried every video format too...nothing seems to work anymore. With my friend's Windows laptop direct output via the HDMI port to the TV works fine, so it's not a hardware issue.
The Philips TV is an 8000 Series HDTV and I've already checked for the latest updates, but it says the software is up-to-date.
Anyone have a similar problem or know of any solutions???
    Thanks in advance!

I would contact Phillips and see if they have a solution.
    Ciao.
