Output to DVD - file types?

OK, so I've gotten myself turned around by being on too many forums.
On a different forum, I was told that to create a TV-quality DVD (so put it in and watch on your TV), you want to have a MPEG-2 file and that you don't want to "export" it as anything else from a video editor (in this case FCE) or you're using compression (H.264 or otherwise). Said FCE should just have a step to burn to DVD which would take the movie and put in it's full form (w/all edits) on best quality on DVD.
Am I missing something here - I only see export? And, I was told to export to a QT Movie at Best Encoding Quality, 30 fps and then the correct aspect ration (4:3 or 16:9).
Basically, I am trying to accomplish two things with video that is captures either directly via DV or I have an ADVC-300 that can pull in (and improve analog):
1) Video data files that are "computer viewing" or online video-sharing quality ONLY (using compression, sized for 480 x 360) - basically they are "previews" of the content on camcorder or vcr tapes b/c someone doesn't want to see all of it in high quality; they want to know what's on their first!
2) DVD-Quality movie from the footage. Create a menu, they put it in the DVD player and watch it. I thought I was supposed to do edits, export to highest quality QT movie, and then use iDVD or DVD Studio Pro to create menu and burn. Thought settings should be using default QT movie export though that does say H.264 unless I change it to something else.
Can someone help me straighten out my confusion? This other board does have a lot of Windows and Premiere Elements users (one is trying to get me to make all data video files into .wmv's which I do not think is the greatest idea) so is that the issue.
Hoping you can help me clear my head with the proper settings for output - thanks!
Alexa

OK - that's what I thought (and I'm reading the FCE manual to verify here). So, I just want to do what I thought, right? Export to a QT Movie (not even using Export to QT Conversion), designate any markers, choose self-contained or not)? Yes?

I have a dvd I got from a DVR recorder, I open the dvd which shows 2 VOB files in the TS folder. the MENU gives "Warning: the stream may have timecode breaks." I "Fix Now" and it works fine. But i dont want the menu. the other VOB file in the TS folder, which should be the "movie I want" gives this error when opened,
    "File open error: unsupported file type"
    when I open anyway, I get an audio bar which has no sound, and no video.
    ANY IDEAS? I've been on this for hours PLEASE

    Hi,
    Do you have the [MPEG-2 component|http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2> installed on your computer? If not, you will need it to be able to convert VOB files.

  • Trying to import dvd into iDVD,it says Unsupported File Type:Unknown format

    Hi there,
    I just had a home movie transferred from vhs to dvd. Now I am trying to import it into iDVD and when i try to the message appears : Unsupported File Type :Unknown format
    Logical Volume Identifier/VIDEO_TS.
    I wanted to put the home movie to music (it allowed me to import the song, not the video).
    It says the kind of file is UNIX Executable File.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    to do this you would first need to convert the DVD (mpeg 2) to QT so you can import to iDvd which btw involves a quality hit. There are apps out there that can do this at a marginal level ... for example:

  • How to output various file types from a stored procedure

    Good morning, I would like to output to spreadsheet files like microsoft Excel, Lotus 123 or to a comma delimited text file from stored procedures. We run Oracle 8i and this report is accessed from an intranet site using stored procedures and the pl/sql web toolkit. The results would be more usefull in a spreadsheet format than web page(s). Can anyone give me a hint as to which process to follow to get the output. Thanks very much, Francois

    Probably best to try the PL/SQL SQL forum:
    http://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jsp?id=478021
    Some quick and easy pointers:
    * Take a look at the COM feature available from PL/SQL in 8i:
    http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle9i/doc_library/release2/win.920/a95499/toc.htm
    * Just write the file out as comma delimited using UTL_FILE and give it a file name of .csv. Quick scan on google gives this example:

    Requirement is to print the attachment on the sale order header of data type ‘File’. The attachment file type is PDF. Please refer the below screen shot for details.
    Responsibility: Order Management Super User
    Path: Orders, Returns - Sales Orders
    Open sales order record, and on sales order header form choose: View - Attachments from toolbar (or click on Attachment-icon).
    Attachment Data Type
    Default attachment data type is defined for each attachment category. This default value can be updated, when attachment is created on a transaction.
    If attachment File Type is 'File', print constant text 'See attached document' on the position defined for it on the layout. The attachment file is then printed to the end of the document (last page of the document). This additional page should contain reference to the sales order number being printed.
    Is it possible to print the attachment of data type ‘File’ in the XMLP report?

  • Different File Types to Import - To Conver or not to convert?

    I have a project that I am dealing with which is requiring several different file types. Mainly .avi exported from VEGAS and footage ripped from a DVD.
    I have heard that it is best to use MPEG Streamclip to convert everything to a DVPro format (I am outputting in SD for broadcast) but wouldn't that just cause more compression?
    What is the best way to handle multiple file formats and the best output settings for broadcast when dealing with multiple formats? Thanks!

    The Avi's might work OK as they are, but the DVD footage has to go through MPEG streamclip. You might have to do this with the Avi's too, but not always... depends on the codec that was used to capture them in Vegas.
    Might try putting the AVI's in Compressor for the conversion if need be, as it might look a bit better in the end. But you've no choice with the files ripped from the DVD.

  • Outputting a DVD To Flash Video in Encore 3 Under Leopard

    This topic is indirectly related to Final Cut Pro 6 (since it is the source of my Quicktime movies in Encore 3) and I post it here because I have had no luck getting any responses on other forums including the Creative Cow and Adobe forums.
    I have recently purchased the Adobe Production Premium package and successfully prepared several Blu-ray and standard definition DVD's using Encore 3. However, whenever I attempt to output any of these DVD's to Flash Video by selecting Build>Output to Flash from within Encore 3, my menus transcode, but when Encore gets to my timeline video, the progress bar goes to about 20% almost instantly and remains there forever. I have tried several different types of video files including short Quicktime movies created in Final Cut Pro as well as other formats in the Encore 3 timeline. The result is always as given above. When this happens, I finally have to Force Quit Encore 3 because selecting cancel on the transcode give me an endlessly spinning beach ball.
    I am running Encore 3 (latest updates installed) on an 8-core Mac Pro (Early 2008 model) with 12 GB of RAM and under Leopard 10.5.4 (latest version with all updates installed). I have successfully transcoded these timelines that seem to freeze Encore 3 using MPEG SlipStream so I know the files are OK.
    Is anyone else having this problem? Is there any solution to the problem? Does output to Flash simply not work under Leopard?
    I have written to Adobe Tech Support. I have received no response from Adobe. I feel that someone on this forum must be using Encore 3 (since it is one of the few ways of getting Blu-ray DVD authoring on the Mac) and has tried to output the DVD as Flash video from within Encore 3. I am simply trying to determine (1) if this is a known issue when running Encore 3 under Leopard; (2) if there is any fix to get Output to Flash working from within Encore 3.
    Thank you in advance for responding.
    Tom

    David,
    My hat is off to you for persevering with Encore 3 and getting it to output flash video. AFter reading that you had gotten it to work, I was inspired to try once again. This time I encoded my timeline to DVCPro HD by exporting the FCP project to Compressor. I then took this timeline (an 11 minute video) into Encore 3 and tried to build a flash DVD. I have a main menu and scene selection menu, and they both transcoded fine in about 20 minutes, but once again when Encore got to my timeline, the progress bar moved to about 1-2% and simply stayed there. After 7 hours I finally gave up and canceled the transcode which had never progressed any further and did a Force Quit on Encore.
    I noticed in doing the above, that during the transcode of the menus Activity Monitor shows my cpu is reading 170-190 and varying as you would expect. Once Encore hits my timeline and begins the transcode of that, the cpu drops to 100 and remains there with no real sign of activity.
    Can you tell me if your DVD that you successfully output to flash with Encore 3 had chapter marks in it? I am wondering if they could be the trouble. Some people have indicated that they solved the problem by going back to an earlier version of Quicktime. I am using version 7.5 of Quicktime, which is the latest version. Can you tell me what version of Quicktime you are using on the Mac that succeeded in outputting to Flash video using Encore 3?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Anyone know how to output an XML file from ABAP to a non sapgui location?

    I have a program that creates XML and then outputs a file via CALL METHOD cl_gui_frontend_services=>gui_download. But now I want to execute the program in background mode and therefore I need to be able to output that XML to a NON sapgui file location. Current code creates the XML to an internal table which is binary then the gui_download method converts that to output XML. .  Does anyone know how I can change the code to either a) output the XML to an internal table which can be output via, say, a TRANSFER command..or, b) output the created binary table of XML to a NON sapgui file location?
    Excerpts from current code are as follows:
    first the XML is created (to the binary file)
          Creating a ixml factory
      l_ixml = cl_ixml=>create( ).
          Creating the dom object model
      l_document = l_ixml->create_document( ).
          Fill root node with value XML
      l_element_xml  = l_document->create_simple_element(
                  name = 'XML'
                  parent = l_document ).
          Create tag 'HEADER' as child of 'XML'
      l_element_header  = l_document->create_simple_element(
                  name = 'HEADER'
                  parent = l_element_xml  ).
    header information about the file and general data about the fleet follows
      l_value = c_fleet_import.
      l_element_dummy  = l_document->create_simple_element(
                name = 'TYPE'
                value = l_value
                parent = l_element_header ).
    etc.......
    then the xml is connected to the stream factory and rendered
      Creating a stream factory
      l_streamfactory = l_ixml->create_stream_factory( ).
      Connect internal XML table to stream factory
      l_ostream = l_streamfactory->create_ostream_itable( table = l_xml_table ).
      Rendering the document
      l_renderer = l_ixml->create_renderer( ostream  = l_ostream
                                            document = l_document ).
      l_rc = l_renderer->render( ).
      Saving the XML document
      l_xml_size = l_ostream->get_num_written_raw( ).
    and then output to the file
      IF sy-subrc = 0.
        CALL METHOD cl_gui_frontend_services=>gui_download
           EXPORTING
             bin_filesize = l_xml_size
            filename     = 'g:\sapdms\BSCC-DEV\EFPAC XML Files\ALL.xml'
           filename     = '/TRICK/727/OUT/ZEFP/EFPAC.XML' "doesnt work with sap gui
             filetype     = 'BIN'
           CHANGING
             data_tab     = l_xml_table
           EXCEPTIONS
             OTHERS       = 24.
    as implied by the comments the method above will successfully output the XML file to the g:drive but will not output to /TRICK/ location, which is where I need it to go in a background mode run.
    This is a problem which has defeated all our local expertise and I would appreciate any help given... Barry Jones

    Try this code below:
    data  l_xml_table2  type table of xml_line with header line.
    W_filename - This is a Path.
      if w_filename(02) = '
        open dataset w_filename for output in binary mode.
        if sy-subrc = 0.
          l_xml_table2[] = l_xml_table[].
          loop at l_xml_table2.
            transfer l_xml_table2 to w_filename.
          endloop.
        endif.
        close dataset w_filename.
      else.
        call method cl_gui_frontend_services=>gui_download
          exporting
            bin_filesize = l_xml_size
            filename     = w_filename
            filetype     = 'BIN'
          changing
            data_tab     = l_xml_table
          exceptions
            others       = 24.

  • How can I combine my DVD files into one file for editing?

    Paul LS offers this excellent solution:
    Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt... the Command Prompt window will open.
    Assuming C: is your hard drive and D: is your DVD drive type the following commands...
    type: "d:" and press Enter, then type what is between the ".." below:
    type: "cd video_ts" and Enter
    type: "copy /b vts_01_0.vob + vts_01_1.vob + vts_01_2.vob c:\DVD.vob"
    vts_01_0.vob + vts_01_1.vob... etc are the vob files in the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD.
    (Substitute the actual names of the vob files in your DVD's VIDEO_TS folder for "vts_01_0.vob", etc.)
    You will find the joined vob file under your C: directory and named "DVD.vob".
    This file is a single file with all the component vob files joined together.
    Note it could take some time to combine the vob files. Once it is complete it will say "1file copied" in the Command Prompt window.

    The effect you are looking for is 'Picture in Picture'. If you want the gap to be there for the duration of the timeline add some 'black video' - from the Tasks Pane> New Item - on the video track above the main track. Resize / position it to where you wish it to be.
    Then with your second clip (now on video track 3)
    Do the same sizing / positioning for it.
    split video and audio and delete or disable the audio.
    Cut it where you want the various start/ends of the fade to be.
    Delete, or just disable (right-click) the unnecessary segments.
    Apply fade in / out to the remaining segments.
    [EDIT]
    Also check out the 'Presets' in Video Effects. There are a variety of PiP presets that may do what you need.

  • Change file type classification? mkv as "Movie"

    In short, I would like to make mkv files show up under the class of "Movie" in smart folders and such. I'm assuming that buried in some setting or file there is a list of extensions I can add "mkv" to. I would have thought this was a common question but so far forum trawling has got me nowhere. Can anyone shed some light? The reason, if you care to read is below, but it doesn't have that much bearing on the question.
    I have a sizeable DVD collection, I also have a new job that puts me in hotels 5 weeks out of 6 for training. I don't want to carry them around as they'll get damaged and broken. Last week I left my MacPro chobbling away at encodes and now my entire DVD collection resides on a NAS as well as my shelves. I've created a simple automator finder service that will copy the selected files to a "Films" folder within the Movies folder that I've removed from the time machine backup so as not to waste space. This is set to only show up if the selected items are "Movies". As a consequence, it doens't appear for mkv's.
    I know I can just alter the service to be there permanantly which is what I'll do for now, but it's not a very elegant solution.

    I was able to change the extension in Windows, which then changed the file type. I'm still curious as to how to make the change directly on my MAC.

  • File type from file name

    Hi,

    File name can be ‘C:\test.doc’ or “C:\test’(test – is file) i.e. with or without file type extension.
    ...Naddy

    You can use the Function module PC_SPLIT_COMPLETE_FILENAME
    export paramter extension will tell the type of file
    Sample Output
    Import     COMPLETE_FILENAME     C:\TEST.TXT
    Import     CHECK_DOS_FORMAT
