Output to tape

I am new to FCPro (previously used Premiere on a PC) and have just put together a short production. Trying to Print to Video and have Canon XL1s connected with VTR recognised OK. However no output when I try print to video.
Suspect it's a simple settings issue and looking for advice.
One other thing, editing all working fine with trainsitions all active - what causes them to become unvailable (ie greyed out on menu?)
G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.5gig Ram 250 gig system + 400 Gig Video Drive

1. Go to Audio/video settings and make sure you video out is going (in the A/V Device is Outputing to your device.
2. check automatical start recording box, in the print to video setup ( you can do it manualy but it just easyer this way)

  • How can I get a frame accurate output to tape using Premiere Pro CS6 and a Blackmagic Decklink Extre

i can set the frame offeset inside the Export to tape tool (which BTW is horrible, you can't scrub, you MUST use ":" or ";" in the timecode fiellds or the deck just goes to the beginning of the tape etc), but I'm still 12 frames off.  there is a frame offset in the Blackmagic device control settings, but that does nothing for the output to tape.
I don't want to have to export a quicktime and then open it in Final Cut to output to tape, the whole object is to get away from FCP because it's a horrible ghorrible program.....TIA
This particular system is an 8core Nehelem Mac Pro with 32GB of ram, OS 10.7.5.

I don't know what AppleTV can handle as far as bit rate is concerned, but increase the bit rate as high as it will let you. You are taking DV which is 25Mb/s and compressing it. If you're making an H.264, you should get great results needing no more than 6Mb/s. Bear in mind, the higher the bit rate, the larger the file size.

  • Cant output to tape

I finished my project now I want to output to tape. Im using a sony min dv handycam. I print to video the bars and countdown are recorded on to tape then the tape stops. Is this a special feature in FCP Xpress? anyone have this problem????????? where is my ouput setting on the menu I cant find it.

yes I have an in and out set, it plays on the recorder when I just run the timeline but I cant record on the fly because when I hit record on the camera does nothing. where are my settings?

  • FCP Crash on Long Render/Can't Output to Tape

My project file size is about 350MB and is layered heavily with Sapphire effects (primarily lighting effects). If I attempt to render the entire 30 minute sequence, FCP crashes about 1.5 hrs into the render. Is this a RAM issue? I have a 3GHz Dual Core with 8GB of RAM. I wasted an entire day rendering small sections at a time. Once the sequence was fully rendered, I couldn't output to tape without dropping frames. I don't have this issue with any of my other projects. Any thoghts?

You can output to tape using a DV or HDV Timeline Sequence.
Can you provide us with the Sequence settings that is trying to be output to tape?
Also the camera needs to be set to recieve one or the other ie. DV or HDV.
My thoughts are there is a configuation twist somewhere.

  • Having trouble outputing to tape via firewire

I'm trying to output to tape via firewire. However I'm only recording audio and not video. Device control preset is Firewire NTSC. Video playback preset is Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480)
    Any suggestion?

Make sure the your Video out is set to ALL FRAMES along with the firewire.
I've no experience with the deck so can't offer any help with it's settings.
As a trouble shooting measure, does the video show up if you use another DV/Analog converter (then on to a TV monitor to visually verify)?

  • Trouble with output to tape in PrPro 14 with AJA Kona.  Win7pro64. Output to HDCam (HDW-F500), prerolls and parks until reference is cycled. Won't do an audio only insert edit.

I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from AJA, but am still having trouble outputting to tape.

Well, this is admittedly making my head spin, but would it be possible, with that level of frame rate mismatch, for recording to even take place? The deck was definitely set for 23.98 and PsF (that's what both the indicators said).
At a point of boiling frustration, I performed an Assemble Edit (instead of the typical Insert, after I blacked a tape). When doing that - just for the heck of it - the recording went on for 83 minutes, it gave me a Lost Lock with 1 minute left in our end credits. I then rewound the tape for about 60 minutes and played. Got a Lost Lock in 20 seconds with a picture dropout.
Since you're familiar with the deck, does this seem at all plausible? Does this feed your theory about a frame rate/communication mismatch?

  • Outputting to tape - setting the right audio level on the camera?

    Hey there,
    I'm using FCP 4.5 on OS 10.4 on a 1.8gHZ Powermac.
I'm recording a mini-DV tape to be played in a theatre. I think I'm setting the reference tone to around 18dbs. However, I'm outputting the tape through a consumer camera.
My question is, do I have to worry about setting the audio levels on the camera to reflect the reference tone of the sequence (ie the basic sound level of the sequence)? I'm not sure the camera even has that function - is it more something that needs attention on a pro deck?
Any advice here would be much appreciated!

In your scenario, the only thing you have to worry about during recording is that your audio level is below 0 dB (-12 dB is always a good level). Anything above 0 dB is pretty much unusable.
If in doubt, its always better to record softer than louder.

  • Outputting to tape via MacBook with Lacie Drive?

So this may have been covered but I can't find it so here it goes: The MacBook has only 1 Firewire port. I'm looking for suggestions for outputting to tape when also using a Lacie Drive which occupies the port. Hooking the Lacie up via the USB won't be fast enough right? So this means figuring out an alternate way to lay off to tape from FCPHD. Does this mean rendering the sequence out as .mov file? If so, which codec is going to give it as close to the same resolution as if I was laying off directly from the FCPHD Print to video?

It depends on the camera npeovideo is using: Canon cameras seem not to like to be daisy chained with LaCie drives... even though mine (Canon MVX4i = Optura 600) works perfectly. But from the other posts in this forum I'm probably an exception.
So I suggest npeovideo first tries daisy chaining. If it works, OK.
If it doesn't work, the only solution I can think of is to copy the project media from the LaCie into the internal hard drive (and reconnect it), disconnect the LaCie drive and print to video to the camcorder, directly connected to the Macbook firewire port. Using USB connection for the external drive might lead to dropped frames and loss of quality.
As an alternative, in order to reduce the need for internal disk space, and in case npeovideo edited a short movie out of an originally long raw movie, he could: a. Export > Quicktime Movie, self contained, (not: Using QuickTime Conversion) to the internal disk drive, b. create a new FCE project where you import that movie into a new sequence, and c. without any further editing, just print to video that sequence (after disconnecting the LaCie drive as above).
I hope some of this may solve the problem.

  • 24fps output to tape doesn't work

I have a 24fps sequence (which I'm outputting to film) and want to output it to DV tape. But when I print to tape, or even playback the sequence with my deck recording it, only the first image appears, with no movement. I'm using a Sony DVCAM DSR-11 deck via firewire.
How can I print my sequence to tape?
    thanks

No, not the aspect ratio, it is the FRAME SIZE.
As noted, standard DV video (whether 4:3 or 16:9 anamorphic) is 720 pixels wide x 480 pixels tall. This is what your device at the end of the firewire cable is expecting.
    Ah, of course, makes sense.
I suspect the frame rate has something to do with it as well. I exported the sequence as a QT movie and reimported it into a 720x480 sequence at 24fps; it still wouldn't output. I then imported it into a 720x480 sequence at the DV frame rate and it did output (although adding a lot of extra frames of course).
Thank you all for your excellent advice.

  • Output to tape on Sony HVR-M10U

I'm new to FCP and editing but was doing OK in SD. Now my client has started recording HD on a Sony HVR-Z1U camera and has bought a Sony HVR-M1OU deck. I have a G5 quad and Final Cut Studio (FCP 5). I captured a scene using the HDV - 1080i60 easy set up. It looks like letterbox on the canvas and I edited it and now want to get it to tape. I only need to output it SD. I have tried many ways but so far have been unable to get it out to tape. I've spoke to the Apple Tech support three times and to Sony tech support and tried all kinds of things that they have suggested and nothing has worked.
If I try to use Edit to Tape I get "Capture preset is set to HDV. Edit to tape is unsupported with this configuration. Please use print to video." I tried this and it spent some time "conforming" video then it looked like it was recording (I could see the video on the monitor on the deck itself) but the tape came out blank.
I'm getting desperate. Please if anyone can help, I'd be very grateful.

    Hi, David,
Thanks for looking. I just haven't found the Apple tech support people very helpful. It says in their list of supported products that they DO support both the Sony camera and the Sony deck in question.
The first time I called Apple tech support when I was having problems capturing the footage, the guy I spoke with didn't even ask me anything - he just said it wouldn't be anything to do with the software and would be the deck.
Then I went into my local Apple store and spoke with somebody at the Genius bar who knew FCP. He wasn't really able to give me much information but did suggest I should export the edited scene as a Quicktime movie but didn't seem to be sure of what settings to use. I did try to do that using NTSC anamorphic (I think from memory that was it) but still was unable to print it to tape. Each time I try anything I get a dialog box saying conforming video and it takes five hours or more before I find out each attempt doesn't work. So as you can imagine it's very frustrating.
I spoke with somebody at Sony who was very helpful but didn't know FCP and he suggested I get Apple Tech Support on the telephone and they could do a conference call with Apple, Sony and me to try and sort out the problem. I then called Apple tech support again and the guy I spoke with there just said "we don't do conference calls". He said the only support they give for free is very basic set up support and told me about the Apple Pro option ($199 each time or $799 for a year) but suggested I try the forum first, which I have done.
However, the guy at Sony had suggested I call the next day and speak with somebody there who know FCP and who wasn't there that day. I did that and he has been very helpful and is still being very helpful in solving my problems; even though they don't make the software they are still trying to help with it.
This is what I feel should happen. I spent $5000 on a computer (my sixth Apple computer in my computer buying history), a lot for a single person as opposed to a company, and then more money to buy the software. I feel very strongly that the tech support should be free and that if the person I speak to doesn't know the answer, he should at least say "I don't know, but I will try to find out for you". I feel that the guys at Sony have gone way beyond the call of duty to try and help me.
I appreciate your interest. Thank you.
    Marla.

  • Output to tape not recording

i'm trying to output a sequence to a mini dv tape.
My Sony DSR-11 is connecting to my g5 via "dv in/out" (on the sony) into a firewire port (on the g5)

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • After QT7-Cant output to tape!

Im sure this problem has somethin to do with Quicktime 7, bcos after the instalation, i found out many things wont do their job the way it should be. Like for example, i have a Toast 5 plug-in in my iMovie to output my movies to VCD format, 2 years have passed n no problem at all. But after QT7, this plug-in has gone useless, the output file will have inversed colors all over.
I can live without the plug-in..
BUT i cant take it that my iMovie no longer can output my movies back to tape!! Ive tried many ways to get this thing corrected but couldnt find solution.
Should I downgrade my QT? is there a way i could do this?
    Thanks in advance

You might also consider downgrading QT back to v6 if you are really using 10.9.3. Apple even made an installer for this. See my other post about this here...

  • Any ideas? (about output to tape)

Hello to all, I am having a serious problem of output to band with Final Cut.
    Here is my equipment:
    - Final cut pro 6.0.2
    - Mac G5 Pro
    - VTR Sony DVCAM DSR80 (avec module SDI)
    - Deck : Blackmagic Decklink Extreme
I can’t synchronize my film on tape starting from Final Cut with this equipment. When I connect on RS-422 and I prepare the output, the VTR says “ILL REF”. I always get the same message, on SDI and composite too.
I also get the following message on Final Cut “IMPOSSIBLE TO LOCK THE SERVO ON THE MAGNETOSCOPE. ADJUST THE PRE-ROLL”
Nevertheless, while making testes on BETACAM SP, I can make the output without any problem… I must be forgetting something but I can’t find out what exactly…
Does anyone have an idea ?
Thanks to all in advance !

if the dsr is not being fed reference and your decklink isn't being fed reference you'll need to set the ref setting on the dsr to input video, it's in the menu. beta SP is far more forgiving. it'll drop a few lines when being fed an unreffed signal but will line up on playback. it is an analog format. digital formats want to know where field1 frame1 is

  • Outputting to tape - NOT WORKING!?

    Hi,
I'm trying to output to a mini-dv tape, and it's not working. I know I'm supposed to be using "Print to Tape" but it's not showing up on my camera screen. I went into Audio-settings and the audio playback is set to "FireWire DV" and the Video Playback is set to "Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480), also I chose "All Frames" through View and that didn't work either.
    What am I missing?

hook up camera to 'puter, switch camera on into VCR mode (possibly 'play') - i.e not 'camera' or rec mode.
Launch FCP > open project > select view > all frames > go file > print to video > click OK >
Wait until writing video/audio finishes (if applicable) you should then be prompted to set your deck/camera to record which you should do, then press OK.
Sometimes, depending upon what camera you use to record to, you may need to use the supplied remote control to go into 'record pause mode' prior to hitting the 'pause' button which will set the camera to record.
What camera/deck are you using? The tape isn't set to 'record protect' is it?

  • Letterboxing 16:9 for output to tape

I have a 16:9 DV NTSC project that I need to put on VHS tape for viewing on a 4:3 monitor. I have always created a new 4:3 sequence and placed my 16:9 sequence in it. When I do this now, the image does not get letterboxed. If I command-drag and drop, some of the clips get letterboxed and some do not. Any idea what might be going on or how to fix this? Thanks, Jim
