Outputting DVD playback to firewire device?

Hi,
Is it possible to output the video playback from Apple's DVD Player app to an external firewire device such as a Canopus breakout box which is connected to a beamer?
Same question for other video players... Quicktime, VLC...
Thanks!
Maarten

No, it has to do with the capabilities of the system. There is no way that I am aware of (and some pretty thorough google searching has revealed nothing) to cause DVD footage to play out through a firewire port.
Has anyone else heard of a way of being able to do this?
If you "rip" your DVD video to a Quicktime format that can be brought into iMovie or Final Cut, you would be able to stream the video back out to the firewire. But using a non-linear editor as a playback mechanism is a bit weird.

  • DVD playback blurry with Kaffeine/Xine

    Hi guys,
I wanted to watch my first DVD under Linux yesterday and I noticed that the image quality is really, really bad compared to watching the same DVD under Windows with PowerDVD.
DVD playback in Kaffeine with Xine engine is really blurry. Does anybody know what the reason could be? There's a lot of options for xine engine parameters in Kaffeine, but I don't have a clue about them. Any tipps appreciated.
I've also tried kmplayer, but the image there has small black horizontal lines in it, which looks really weird. I thinks that's called interlaced, right? I'm a total video noob. ^^
    TIA,

Gone through every other thread related to DVD playback issues when you do a forum search for "dvd playback". If I try to play a DVD, the disc spins for quite a while while (S)MPlayer just sits there and eventually crashes. Tried this with multiple DVDs, updated all my software...here's the log. Sort of looks like hardware issues to me.  Do you know that the drive works (i.e. tested in another OS, or it used to work and just stopped?)
Did you try just mplayer dvd://  ?  That's quite a long options list you've got there.
What kind of drive is it?

  • Annoying video/DVD playback problems on new Mac mini (2010)

I have a Mac mini at home right now, latest edition (2010).
I am very surprised to find that DVD playback exhibits signs of stutters here and there. Not huge stutters, but I can constantly see small "skips" and what seems like frame drops here and there. Playing back the same DVD on a $120 Blu-ray-player shows no sign of this behaviour.
I have tried this on two different TV sets (one 720p and one 1080p), and the mini is not able to play back a DVD without these stutters/skips. Two different blu-ray players play the disc just fine (I have been using Ghost Dog to test - check chapter to and the scenes containing panning, it's easier to notice that way).
It seems ordinary video files playback (files from HD, 720p, mkv) exhibit some of the same behaviour, though this seems more dependent on which app is used for playback. Quicktime seems worse (noticeable stutters/skips), VLC 1.1 a bit better (though both DVD playback and file playback show signs of stutter), while XBMC is the best of the three, with very little frame drop (if that is in fact what it is).
Any idea what's going on here? Why will such a expensive machine with HDMI output not play back video properly, while a cheap Blu-ray-player does it just fine?
    Are there any known issues?
(sorry for posting this in the wrong from earlier!)

I have not used the dvd player app in my 2010 mini, but I've certainly played every media type under the sun since receiving it.
It plays them all without dropping frames, stuttering, pausing, etc.
Are you using dvd player with dvd disc images, video ts folders, or actual DVD discs in the drive?
If you're playing a disc image or video ts folder, are you accessing them over wireless networking? If so, try them on the internal drive, or over a wired network connection.
Try turning off the option is in energy saver that allows drive sleep (system sleep can stay where it is, just turn off *hard drive* sleep).
For best performance, make sure you aren't running other apps besides the media player app that you're using at the time.
Make sure you don't have software or utilities running background tasks (such as disk warrior, drive genius or tech tool pro).
If you have external devices connected (including printer and/or scanner), try the system without them connected. Does the video playback improve without them connected? If it does, then try reconnecting them one by one to figure out which one of them is related to the problem.

  • Outputting DVD video to TV monitor

    Hi,
I'm wondering if there is a way to output DVD video from my Mac Mini through firewire, using my DV camcorder as a pass through to a VCR/TV. I can't seem to get it to work, and seem to think that the problem lies either in the encoding of DVD video or copyright protection, since I haven't been able to do it successfully.
    Thanks,
    Andy Golebiowski

No, it has to do with the capabilities of the system. There is no way that I am aware of (and some pretty thorough google searching has revealed nothing) to cause DVD footage to play out through a firewire port.

  • Having trouble outputing to tape via firewire

I'm trying to output to tape via firewire. However I'm only recording audio and not video. Device control preset is Firewire NTSC. Video playback preset is Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480)
    Any suggestion?

Make sure the your Video out is set to ALL FRAMES along with the firewire.
I've no experience with the deck so can't offer any help with it's settings.
As a trouble shooting measure, does the video show up if you use another DV/Analog converter (then on to a TV monitor to visually verify)?

  • Firewire devices no longer showing

This afternoon - for the first time in years - no firewire device showed up either on the Desktop or in the Apple Profiler.
Restarted several times with no success.
Devices on Firewire 400 (via bus) external CD reader/writer and DVD ditto.
Devices on Firewire 800, three LaCie drives linked together. Tried each one separately, no success.
Which is bit of a pain, these being my backup and ancillary storage devices ...
Disconnected them all. Restarted G5. Closed down and left G5 for half-an-hour (following a suggestion in a forum). Reconnected, restarted; no joy.
    Console message includes:
    Jun  6 14:50:03 localhost kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 42 built-in now active, GUID 001124ff fe86cb20; max speed s800.
and then, at the bottom of the report:

Jun  6 14:59:11 SarahJane kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 42 built-in: no valid selfIDs for more than 2 minutes after bus reset.
Can anyone help, please? I've run all the usual things, hardware check, diskwarrior, techtool (though none of these seem to check the firewire bus).

Right - had a look through, and after two attempts (mutter mutter and splutter curses) got everything going again.
The cure was, in this case, as listed in your first link: disconnect computer etc.
The first time the CD reader came back but the external drives wouldn't, so I said a few words that my wife would not approve of, then tried again but this time connected the (800 fw) external drives first, and then, when the buggers showed up, connected the cd drive on the 400 cable. I think the dvd drive on the 400 has died, so I'll leave that disconnected.
Oh it's a great machine when it's running right, it's a lovely gadget to play with; but when something goes wrong it can be very frustrating ...
I sometimes wish I'd had one of these when I was still at school and a little quicker on the uptake.

  • Using Firewire devices results in desktop stuttering

Firewire traffic is causing desktop performance to decline. On my Mac Mini (late 2009, 4 GB RAM) even slow amounts of firewire traffic is causing bad spaces performance (stuttering while moving from space to space) and jerky window movement. I have tested this with several cables and 2 different firewire devices. Device 1, a Canon HDV camcorder, is bringing the window movement to stutter when imovie is detecting the connection and showing the import screen (no transfer initiated, not even playback). Device 2, a Western Digital My Book Studio with FW800 ports, is making the desktop jerky even if it is only playing a mp3 file.
    Notes:
Spotlight was disabled on the mentioned fw800 hdd. Disk activity monitor shows normal operation, very low cpu workload. The system log also does not show any suspicious messages.
USB devices like harddisks do not trigger this behaviour. The mentioned fw800 disk also has an USB port. Connecting the device using USB does not slow down desktop performance, even when transfering large files.

Thanks for you suggestions. I tried them out (and some more).
    Here are the results:
You can test to see if the Virtual Memory system is getting overworked by running Utilities Activity >Monitor, click on the System Memory tab and look at PageOuts and PageIns.
I kept an eye on the virtuel memory for a while now. Seems to be fine, even after hours of my usual working procedure there are virtually no page outs.
But if your ratio is good (10% or less), then I'm would suspect instead that you need to re-install a >full combo update of the latest version of OSX.
I reinstallad the 10.6.4 Combo Update. No difference.
Then I installed a fresh copy of OSX on the firewire drive. Running an unpatched OS from the drive is not bad in regards of system response time (actually it's pretty good). But the desktop jerkyness is present all the time.
Then (after switching back to my internal drive again) I stopped keeping an eye on window movement etc. and tried out some games. The results: There is a major difference in performance when the fw drive is working in the background in contrast to an usb2 drive (or even the same fw drive attached using usb). When I am playing the game (in this case it was an opengl port of Doom) there is virtually no performance penalty when I am playing the game while transfering a huge file to an usb2 drive in the background. But when I am transfering a file to the FW drive, there is huge drop in frames per second (roughly 25 - 30 %).
I am wondering if this has anything to with fact that firewire is using dma access to the system memory (in contrast to usb) an there is some sort of congestion on the memory bus. Especially since my issues are linked to gpu performance and the 9400M in the Mini uses shared memory.

  • Firewire device looses connection when external screen is inserted into the thunderbolt port? HELP

    HI
I am a recording studio engineer. Ive got a Firewire AD/DA Converter (Focusrite Saffire Pro 56) running from my Firewire port of my MacBook Pro, which is running OSX Mavericks. I've also got an external Screen I want to use as an extended display. I'm using a HDMI cable from the screen to a HDMI to Thunderbolt Converter which I then plug into my Thurderbolt Port.
As soon as I plug the screen in, the Firewire Port looses connection completely and I cant use or even choose the Saffire Pro 56 as audio driver. Another thing happens where the Thunderbolt port replaces the Saffire Pro 56 Driver with the screen as the audio output source.
Please help, there's nothing I can find to fix this.
    Thanks Maurice

You don't mention which model you have, but this is from the M-Audio Firewire 410 Manual Troubleshooting section:
The FireWire 410 has been designed to give you high performance and professional quality audio. It has been tested under a wide range
of systems and operating conditions. In the real world, however, there is a nearly infinite number of possible operating scenarios, any of
which could affect your system’s performance. Much like owning an automobile, “your mileage may vary.” This section can not begin to
cover all possible issues you may encounter, however we want to give you some suggestions on common problems you may experience.
One thing to avoid is connecting too many devices. The FireWire bus is a dependable, high-speed, high-bandwidth protocol which is ideally
suited for digital audio. Nonetheless, it’s important to remember that audio and multimedia streaming places considerable demands on
your processor and the FireWire bus. Although it is theoretically possible to chain many multiple FireWire devices in series, doing so may
    potentially degrade your audio performance.
I guess this degradation could also affect the Firewire HD. Maybe there is a simple fix, but it sounds like the M-Audio people have been down this road before.

  • Anyone able to mount more than 3 firewire devices on their Alum 2.4 imac?

    Hi.
I can't power up more than 3 firewire devices or my imac kicks everything off. I have 2 Lacie 1T drives piggybacked on the 800 port and then a powered firewire hub plugged into the 400 port. I can have either another firewire external HD OR an external Cd/Dvd recorder plugged into the hub. If I try both (or any combination of 2 firewire devices) - the imac kicks everything off firewire, both on the 800 port and the 400 port. All my devices have their own external power supply. It also doesn't matter how I chain the drives. I can have 3 on the 800 port but then nothing on the 800 port.
This is a bummer for me. I migrated from a Dual G5 2GB with 4 external HDs and an 2nd external DVD writer attached. My drives are 2 1Ts, a 800 GB and a 400 GB. I do a lot of photography and video editing so I really need the external space. I guess this imac really isn't a "Pro" model but I didn't need any more speed and I wanted to save space and money. And I love the 24" screen. I think Apple should say up-front if there are significant limits to the imac's Firewire capabilities.
Are any of you you able to attach 4 firewire devices at one time? If so, then I guess my machine is defective and I'll start working with Apple on exchanging it. Please let me know.
    Thanks

I think you should be able to do much more than 4 - I believe the theoretical maximum is somewhere at 20+ devices (if they are self-powered). I don't have a 24inch but instead a 20 inch but I'm running three HDs and one DVD drive and in fact, all daisy-chained onto one single firewire port on the Mac. Do your external drives have two ports or just one? In the former case, you might want to try skipping the hub and just daisy-chaining them. I've never owned a firewire hub so I don;t know if they can be touchy but you might want to give it a shot.

  • DVD playback: screen goes black in full-screen mode

Hi. Having problems with DVD playback on 1 Ghz Powerbook G4 12 ". When trying to view in full-screen (or even sometimes in maximum) mode, screen simply goes black. Sound still works, but no visuals. As soon as I revert back to Normal size, visuals play fine.
Any ideas ? This is a problem which has developed rather than being with the machine since I bought it. Just for the record, I have 1.25 GB RAM installed and am running 10.4.5.

  • Dvd playback is slow

i have noticed that dvd playback is slow . i use vlc and kaffeine.if the dvd files are on hdd the playback is again slow.i have nvidia 630m optimus

    Hi
If this delay appears only playing the movies and audio using the CD/DVD drive then you should check this short workaround:
    1) Access the device manager
    2) Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI option
    3) go to Primary IDE channel -> Properties -> Advanced settings
    4) here you should check if DMA if available was chosen
If its not set to DMA if available then remove the Primary IDE channel from the device list and reboot the notebook.
After the notebook has booted again, check the single point again and check if DMA if available appears again

  • No Sound During DVD Playback

I have a new HP elitebook 8460p and there is no sound during DVD playback. Is there a setting I may be able to change? Here is a list of things I've tried and pertinent information:
    - Confirmed all system mute settings are off (e.g., not muted)
    - Confirmed DVD works on other devices
    - DVD will not play sound in InterActual Player, Windows Media Player, or VLC Media Player
    - Picture is fine...just no audio
    - Running XP
    - All other system sounds work
    Help!

  • Unable to type in password if firewire devices are connected

I've just upgraded to Lion, and have this odd problem.  When Lion boots on my Mac Mini, it prompts to type in my password.  If I have my Firewire devices connected (two external storage device, a Seagate and Drobo), I can't type in password or click on any of the buttons (such as reboot or shut down).
If I disconnect Firewire cable from my Mac Mini, I can type in the password, then reconnect Firewire cable and everything works fine from that point on!?
Looking around, I saw few reports of frozen login screen.  Though, my problem looks a bit different.  For example, the cursor in my case is still normal cursor, not the beach ball.
If it makes any difference, the keyboard is Apple's wireless (bluetooth) keyboard.
Wondering if anybody else run into same problem?

For now, I simply connected it via USB, and it seems to be happy.  It's just a DVD drive, probably not getting too much benefit for being on Firewire port.
As for firmware, last firmware update for it was back in 2005 (it's an older DVD drive, LG GSA-5163D, however still does its job very nicely), which I think I might have installed long time ago (not sure how to get what version the drive runs).  Anyhow, LG provides only Windows exe for flashing the firmware, and I don't have any Windows boxes at home.  There's at least one open-source flasher for Mac which claims it can extract firmware from LG's Windows exe and flash it onto the drive.  However, I'd rather not trust it not to fry the drive in the process if I really don't have to ;-)

  • Can't see my Firewire devices

I have a iBook G4 with 10.5.01, I can no longer see my firewire devices. I have two external hard drives and a CD/DVD player/burner. I have fooled around with moving the cables and tryed it with only one hard drive - nothing - can't see a thing. This is something new. I recently updated Toast Titanium to 8.0.3. On the system preferences network page - it doesn't see the firewire devices and I have no idea what DHCP is. (It says Built-in Firewire is not connected. Does this mean I have a computer hardware problem?) Any suggestions?

Unless your on a network, that message is normal. Hooking up FW devices to your machine is local, not network. For your problem, see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338 and http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20041221081432908
