Outputting DVD Player to Television

My home DVD player is dying slowly-about half of my collection no longer plays on it, but everything plays fine on my PowerBook. I was wondering if it's possible to plug my PB into my TV, and then output whatever is showing in DVD Player.app to the tv screen. I know I can us the TV to display my screen, however I just want the DVD to play on the TV, not show my Microsoft Word document on it. Is it possible? What do I need as far as cables and software?

As your PB comes with a S-VHS output just connect it to your TV video in.
If your TV set only supports composite video: A short cable coverter S-VHS2Composite Video came with your PB.
No additional software needed - just use you DVD Player and switch it to full screen.

  • Firewire DV video output for DVD player?

    Hi everyone,
I am just wondering, does anyone know of any way to get the DVD player program to output NTSC DV via firewire like FCP allows for external monitors?
I would love a way to test my dvds without having to waste so many discs... Any suggestions?
    -patrick

What is outputting DVD Player's signal to external monitor going to achieve?
The failure of DVDs burned is due either to the media used (the quality of DVD), the bit-rate settings used or more generally, the DVDSP workflow (you are burning via DVDSP and/or Compressor aren't you?) or the DVD player that the discs are being played on. (Different models cope with different variables, bit rates , brand of DVD used, how old the player is, whether the lens has been cleaned last - if at all...)
If it's a DVD burning issue, describe your workflow and post in the the relevant forum.
P.S. If I've misunderstood the question, please ignore the above...

A few months ago, I purchased a new iMac. I recently created a movie using iMovie. Then I found out that iDVD is not included. So I have the problem that I want to burn a movie that I can play on my DVD player and watch on a television. I rang Applecare and was told that I need a program called BURN.
Is this correct? I can export the movie from iMovie in a m4v format, but I think I need to convert this to iso format before I can burn the disc.
I know there are programs like TOAST that will do this, but it is expensive.
I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Burn will not do what you want, and there is no real substutute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

  • DVD-Player SPDIF output to Audigy 2 Plati

    Hello together !
Because of the bad sound of my TV speakers I want to connect my DVD-player via SPDIF-Out to my Audigy (the player has no optical out).
But I only get some sound when I set the Player's output to "PCM". And then there's only stereo sound, no surround :-(
I can also set the output to "Data Output", what means that the player passes the signals without any changes.
But then there is no sound ! Is the Audigy unable to interpret this form of input ?
Can anyone tell me what's the right way to get surround sound via PC ?
    Bye,
ChrisMessage Edited by trinitaucher on 0-8-2004 04:56 PM

I'm not sure if this is correct but..
Does the audigy 2 have a dolby prologic decoder? I know it has the dolby digital and dts. So if it doesnt, and I cant find where it does, then the sound blaster would process the audio just like standard stereo. The output from the TV line out jacks is probably prologic (analog) like mine. I have to run it through the home theater receiver which has a prologic decoder to give me the surround from TV shows.

  • DVD player audio output direct to Cambridge Soundworks FourPointSurround FPS2000

I want to purchase a new DVD player and route the surround sound audio directly to my FPS2000. However, I can't seem to find a DVD player whose output jacks include either the 9-pin SPDIF cable or the Front/Rear channel jacks called for by the FPS2000.
How can I get surround sound audio from a modern DVD output jack to my FPS2000? Is there an adapter that would work?
    Thanks.

    Got it. Thanks guys.

    Thanks.

  • Output for dvd player

I don't use Premiere Pro very often so I would like to ask a question to avoid any problems.
I work with Maya and I need to create a regular DVD in order to be played in a DVD player as opposed to a PC.   What settings do I need to be mindful of to avoid any technical issues such as failure to play back?
I did try to review some of the postings on the forum but I was unable to open the actual discussion so this is why I'm posting my question now.
Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.
    Thank you.

    hello,
Encore comes with adobe creative suite up til cs6
if you are using the cloud you have to download/install separately
once Encore is installed you can 'author' a dvd like Jeff said
you need to export from PPRO using the mpeg2-dvd setting
otherwise your files will be transcoded in Encore before burning to dvd
ALSO: most people will download/install 'imageburn' software and use it to actually burn the dvd to disc
(from Encore you will choose to build ISO file from the 'build' menu; then load up the iso into 'imageburn' and go at it)
    hope this helps

  • DVD Player not outputting audio to USB Speakers

This is an odd one that thus far has only affected two DVD's of mine. If I play "The International" or "The Black Dahlia" in DVD Player, the audio will work fine if I select my internal iMac speakers. But as soon as I select my Bose USB Speakers, the sound goes away.
Has anyone seen this, and how did you fix it?

Have you checked the sound or audio programming on each DVD itself via the main menu when you launch? It might be configured to something other than what you can use and the Mac would remember (I think ) and try to use them each time.

  • How to connect JVC DVd player and video cassette recorder to QIP 7100 and Panasonic TC-32lx44

What cables do I need to connect my DVD/VCR recorder through my QIP 7100 to see on my TV? I would appreciate any assistance with this since I am a novice.
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You cannot run ANY signal through a Set top box to a Television. The only input on the boxes that is actually functional is the coaxial cable. The only way your are going to connect your DVD player to the TV is via one of the AV inputs on the Television itself.
Hopefully your Television has at least 2 sets of AV inputs, because you are going to need them. 1 for the VCR and 1 for the DVD player.
Depending upon the TV, VCR and DVD player, the connections possible are:
1). HDMI cable from TV to DVD if the DVD player has HDMI and the TV has a 2nd HDMI input. It is very unlikely your VCR supports HDMI.
2). Component Video (RGB) plus Audio AV cables from audio and component outputs on the DVD player to a set of component and coresponding audio inputs on the Television. It is unlikely that your VCR supports component video.
3). S-VHS cable from DVD player or VCR  to S-VHS input on the TV (if there is one), and audio AV cables from the audio outputs on the DVD/VCR player to the corresponding audio input on the TV for the S-VHS cable. If S-VHS is not available, you can use composite video instead. HDMI and Component video will give you the best picture and composite video will give you the lowest quality picture, but depending upon the equipment, your VCR may not have an S-VHS output available.

  • DVD player will not play widescreen video properly...

I just created a widescreen DVD on iDVD that I was planning on watching on a standard sized television, meaning, I was expecting black bars on the footage.
I popped the DVD into my Panasonic DVD player and it seems it enlarges the video and crops out the sides.
I do not get any black bars.
When I play the DVD on another machine and on my computer, the black bars appear and everything is fine.
    Why does this happen?
My Panasonic player is at least 5 years old, if that makes any difference. I did not change any settings on it either.
I'm just worried because I have to make several copies of this DVD for people and I don't want there to be any problems.
I would really appreciate any help so that I can avoid such issues.
    Thanks!

    Hello Joaquin,
iDVD 6 used to output DVDs in "auto letterbox & pan/scan" which means it will display at whatever your DVD player is set to. To avoid a widescreen video being displayed fullscreen you would have to force letterboxing for any 4:3 device. This can be done with myDVDedit (http://www.mydvdedit.com/).What it does is edit the IFO file of the DVD, which is the file telling the DVD player what to do with the disc.
There are a number of help files and tutorials on the site ... if you run into problems, post back
    hope this helps

  • DVD Player initialization error: DVD won't play, (-70017)

I am trying to play a DVD with music and no video on my Mac Mini and I'm getting this message:
    There was an initialization error.
A valid video device could not be found for playback (-70017)
The DVD shows up on the desktop just fine, but DVD Player won't start up because of this error. The Mac Mini plays CDs just fine and it has played this DVD many times before just fine.
What's going on? Thank you for your help.

I'm not sure if you've found your answer. I had the same problem for quite a while on my Mac mini and couldn't find any answers on the Internet. But I did finally stumble on the answer in an Apple developer page somewhere which listed all of the possible Apple DVD Player return codes. -70017 is an error which suggests the DVD Player couldn't find a suitable display on which to send the picture output. In my case, I had removed my television from the computer and had been using VNC to remotely connect. Anytime I attempted to put a DVD in the drive, I'd get the error. The error is produced because I do not have a monitor or display attached to the computer. I hope this helps!

  • MPEG 2 files jittery in QuickTime player & Apple DVD Player

I'm not sure if this is a QuickTime issue or not, but I am having trouble playing back MPEG 2 files in the QuickTime Player, and also in the Apple DVD Player.
During pan shots there is a noticeable jitter which is not there in the original footage. I have made the MPEG 2 files in Compressor, and also in DVDSP, and used a variety of settings to no avail. All the files I've tried play back fine in VLC, and also play back fine when burnt to DVD and played on my television.
    Any suggestions?

Well, that's the odd thing. It looks fine on the CRT TV. And in VLC Player it looks ok too. But in QuickTime and DVD Player it looks shocking. I took the DVD to work and played it on my PC there and it looks pretty awful there too. I take your point about being overly sensitive, but I showed it to my partner who is not the perfectionist nerd that I am, and he mentioned it without me even saying anything. Funny thing is, it seems to only be on the MPEG 2 files. I output last night as an MPEG 4 (figuring I'd have to put the footage on the web instead of on DVD) and there was no jerky problem with that file at all.
