Outputting for sound mix

I have an hour doc projec that is going to an outside house for a sound mix. I'm exporting an OMF file from FCP 6.01 and they have asked for 30f handles. OK so far.M¥ question is since the audio is cut already and often times interview sound is cut into the needed bites all in the same track(s) do I need to checkerboard all the sound so each clip plays on its own track so that when I add the handles in the OMF output the time line doesn't suddenly expand because of all the added handles?

No need to checkerboard. The addition of handles will not play havoc on your timeline. The handles are there, but just like in your FCP timeline they are just available if the sound editor needs to adjust an edit, the clips still start and end at the times they do in your timeline.

• How Can I export Sound Files for Sound mixing?

Can someone please explain me the process of exprting sound sound files for the Sound Mixer & Composer? How do I deliver it to them?

Welcome to the forum.
First, what version of PrE are you using, and then, on what OS version?
In general (specifics can come, with the above info), one would Share/Publish+Share (or Export in older versions) the Timeline as an intermediate Audio-only file. That would be Imported, or Opened in the audio-editor program.
In PrE 11, or 12, one would go to Publish+Share, and then Computer. There, they would scroll down the list, to Audio. Note: the scroll bars are not easy to see, but easy to miss. Look to the far right of the Panel. With Audio selected, choose PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit. That will get you the best file to edit further with your DAW. When that editing is complete, use PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit, then Import the resultant edited Audio file into the PrE Project, placing it on an empty Audio Track, say Audio 2, or 3. To maintain its position, I would place the CTI (Current Time Indicator) at exactly the point that you want that edited Audio file to be, perhaps at the start of the Timeline. Then, with Snap turned ON, the edited Audio file should snap to the CTI.
When it is in place, you can Delete the other Audio (that which you exported for additional editing), or just go to the Audio Mixer, and check Mute for any Tracks, that contain that original material.
Hope that helps, and if you can let us know a bit more, then someone can step you through any "gray areas," for your specific version.
Good luck,

• Static, Electronic Noise then No Output for 2 or 3 Minutes, Then Music/Sound

LStatic, Electronic Noise then No Output for 2 or 3 Minutes, Then Music/Sound? Hi,
I'm not sure how to really explain this problem; but, I'll give it a shot.
I have a Gateway FX530 system with a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Gamer PCI card installed.
Please note that the problem that I am describing has happened through the life of the computer (2-/2 years).
The problem is that I hear static through both of the powered speakers, followed within seconds by electonic beeping of various tones followed by silence. During this silence no sound/music will play through the sound card/speakers.
If I let the system sit for several minutes the sound returns and I can hear music/audio.
(This problem never happens when I am playing music or other audio, it is always when the system is idle with nothing apparently being processed by the sound card.)
I suspect it is something hardware-related with the sound card; but, before I replace the card I wanted to see if anyone else has similar problems.
Any input will be appreciated. (I have tried replacing drivers in the past with no success.)
Thanks
Jeff

Well, I thought it was solved but that App makes my sound lock up about once a day requiring a restart.
There must be a solution to this as I've seen loads of posts on the same subject, mostly relating to MacBooks.
What is clearly happening is that the audio is going to sleep after a period, and when it's waking, the first second or so of the sound gets missed. Now, when that is system sounds, they get missed completely!
Oh, I should say I've tried KeepSoundAwake as well.
Anyone?

• System preferences in iMac for sound output shows only headphones. How do I change this to get sound through computer? Thanks.

In sound System preferences on iMac headphones is only option for sound output. How do I change this to get sound output through computer, as in a video etc. Thanks.

There is a switch in the jack that may be stuck. Try plugging and unplugging a headset plug into the socket a few times.
You might try dipping the headset plug into some pure alcohol, wiping it nearly dry, and repeating the process to clean/clear the socket.

• Using Apple Digital AV Adapter and sound output for iPad 1

Hi all!
I'm trying to hook up my iPad 1 and iPhone 4 to a projector through HDMI that has very weak speakers. My solution is to hook up the video through HDMI and use my headphone jack or use my device speakers for sound. At first I thought it'd be okay because people on this forum say the headphone jack will still work, but no one that posted these question have an iPad 1, they all had the 2nd gen. Does anyone know if it also works with iPad1 and iPhone 4? i know mirroring won't work on my devices, i'm just looking to use AirVideo and Plex to run my videos.
Thanks in advance!

What apps are you try to dsicplay via TV out? On the iPod TV out only dispays with apps that support TV out. The Video app is one of them.

• My sound mix does not sound the same after using Compressor for DVD

Hi,
Is there something I can do to maintain the sound mix of my original file when converting to the dolby in Compressor. It needs to be louder overall and sometimes the music goes way too low and the dialogue goes to soft. Sound effects were louder and now get quiet during some parts.
Help?
Thanks!

Hi:
You must do some changes in the standard AC3 preset from Compressor. Duplicate it, and chage the following settings:
- Dialog Normalization: -31
- Compression Preset: None
Save it and try it. You must get the same mix and level than your original.
Hope that helps !

• Sound Mix for Short News Feature

Hi , I'm a news video editor and i would like to share my difficulties to make a proper sound mix under a very short time delay.
I usually mix three different sound source , 1. The press agencies videos 2. the journalist Voice Narration 3.optional Music and some sound effects.
The all need to be mixed to around -12db . I don't feel at ease using the Dynamic as i don't know to use it properly.
Manytimes my mix is either with not enough sounds to make it lovely or with too loud music to make the voice narration easily understandable
does someone got agood plan to deal with a mix under a very short time ?
any miracle plan ?
Please share ..

Experimentation and experience are the best solutions, I think.

• Using built in optical digital audio output for 5.1

So, lets say i want to mix something in 5.1 using logic or soundtrack pro, can i use the optical digital audio output of my macbook to send the signal to a home theather or something to mix it?, or i need a special hardware card for this?
Thanks a lot!!

Hi alece,
Just to clarify something;
When using an optical cable there are several standards of audio that can pass through the cable:
S/PDIF - a stereo signal - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spdif
AC3 or Dolby Digital - up to 5.1 surround - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ac3
Dolby Digital Plus - up to 7.1 surround - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DolbyDigitalPlus
ADAT Optical - up to 8 channels of audio - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADAT_Lightpipe
MADI - up to 64 channels of audio - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MADI
I´m sure other people can add more to the list if they want to, my point is that these signals can pass through the exact same kind of optical cable.
The important bit to know is what does your equipment and software support... in theory your question is quite logical, a software can play 5.1 surround to a optical output like Apple DVD Player does with the built-in sound card of a modern mac. However, Logic does not support live encoding of AC3. That is why you have to output the surround mix in Logic to a sound card with at least 6 channels (5+1 as in 5.1) connected to your speaker system. Typically this would be 5 active studio monitors plus a sub. If you were thinking to use an existing stereo I would not recommend it since most consumer speakers have no limiters to protect them from damage (but may be possible depending on your amplifiers inputs)
I hope this answered your question

• SB Live!: No sound mixing.

Well I have finally got my SoundBlaster Live! working, but I have no sound mixing so I can here multiple sounds. In the past I used my onboard soundcard, and I used the little trick ind the wiki (http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … 0at%20once the dmix part) to play multiple sounds. Could it be the /etc/asound.conf file or the /etc/libao.conf file? Or both?

Well here is the story:
I have always got this annoying message:
PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
** PCI interrupts are no longer routed automatically. If this
** causes a device to stop working, it is probably because the
** driver failed to call pci_enable_device(). As a temporary
** workaround, the "pci=routeirq" argument restores the old
** behavior. If this argument makes the device work again,
** please email the output of "lspci" to [email protected]
** so I can fix the driver.
So of course i e-mail Bjorn Helgaas, and he told me it just was a annoying message and my soundcard should work. And it did.
Here is "lspci" output (some of it):
01:08.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs: Unknown device 0007
I used "alsaconf" to configure my card and it worked just fine. Accept that i can't play multiple sounds.
The sound? Well the sound comes and goes, and comes and goes. It is a little bit hard to explain.
P.S. I hope that was enough infomation.

ps.
i want to add. some additional information, my 5. speaker doesn't have digital output, the line out for the sub woofer and centre are red and white line just like the same as the other speaker line, i don't know weather it will cause the front doesn't work or not, but i had read some post it said "In the Creative Mixer, be sure to disable the option for Digital Output Only, and set the number of speakers accordingly. For example, if you have a 5. channel speaker system, select 5.."
if, i didn't change the creative mixer to "disable the option for digital output", will it cause the centre and sub woofer have no sound at all? plesae reply A.S.A.P. as i don't know weather it is the problem of the sound card or just a problem of the setting.....thanks alot.

• How to Marry Video to Surround Sound Mix?

We're getting a surround sound mix from our post house and we have the choice of .AIFF, AC3, OMF, DAT. How can I take that mix and marry it to the video we have in order to make one MPEG 2 program stream file? And is Compressor the right app for it? Or should I use DVD Studio Pro? I'm reluctant to use DVDSP because we don't need .vob files, just a MPEG 2 video stream.

I have often "married" AIF audio files to MPEG 2 video using only the Quicktime Player App (Pro license needed, though). I take the separate output files from Compressor and open each in Quicktime Player.
Then Select All of the AIF file, copy, then click on the window for the MPEG 2 file and choose "Add to Selection & Scale" from the edit window, then save the MPEG 2 file. You can look at the movie properties of the MPEG2 file to verify that it now has an audio track. You should probably play it all through as well just to be sure it's not out of sync (I've never found that to be the case, though).
Ok, so here are the caveats:
Surround sound typically is an AC3 file and I don't think you can open those in Quicktime.
Even if you can, I think AC3 has a rule about being evenly divisible (or something like that) so it rounds up or down on the time. That could lead to sync problems. The advantage with AIF in using output from Compressor files is, assuming they were exported to the batch correctly, you know they'll be the same time length and thus syncable.
Finally, consider how you are distributing the file if not via DVD. Most people don't have MPEG 2 codecs with their Quicktime player. Even if the movie has a standard .mov extension, they will not be able to open MPEG2 movies with or without sound tracks. To make it playable for the masses you'll need to export the new movie using a more ubiquitous codec.
But, overall, the marriage of MPEG2 and an audio track is easily done as described, above.

• Satellite X200-252 and Vista sound mixer problem

Hi,
My Satellite X200-252 is running under Vista Home Premium operating system.
I have strange problem with sound mixer. After (I think) some security patches applied my vista stopped from recognizing the sound device.
The taskbar sound icon on the right side of the screen is marked with red cross and while im clicking the icon the info-window states that there is no sound device connected.
When I select the properties, I see all 3 output devices, i.e. internal speakers, hdmi and digital output. However no icon is displayed in the window. But the configuration is working.
Moreover the keyboard shortcuts as well as touchpad works as expected. I mean I can mute/unmute etc..
But I can not change the volumes per channel. For this I need the mixer app.
What I can do to repair my comp?
/Arek

Hi
In your case I would recommend reinstalling the sound driver.
As far as I know this notebook supports an Realtek sound card.
You could visit the Realtek website and could download the sound driver directly from this page.
You need an HD sound driver.

• Mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro emits high-frequency noise when engaged for sound

Recently I noticed that when the MacBook Pro activates the sound output device for built-in speakers, a high-pitched whine or noise begins, and does not stop until the card deactivates again.
The sound is not proportional to brightness, hard drive activity, CPU load, or anything else I've been able to try, except for sound output. When I plug in headphones it cuts out when the sound transfers to the headphones (it's on the same slight delay that the sound change is on). This MBP leads a relatively tame life, although it does travel sometimes. I can't figure out what would have started this sound, but I noticed it start within the last month, and I have confirmed that others hear it in the same quiet environment as I hear it in.

Give it two or three more weeks to get below 80% and stay there, then take it to an Apple Store for testing. As long as it's still above 80%, it's going to be considered "within spec," so make sure it's below 80% when you take it in.
