Outside of Warranty on Zen Xtra with no sound

I am the owner of a Zen Xtra 30 GB that I purchased in Dec 03, meaning I'm outside the window for the warranty, and the player seems to be working fine--there's just no sound coming through the speakers. I've checked the headphones and they seem to work fine everywhere else. Does anyone have an idea of how much this will cost to fix or am I sitting on a paper weight. Are there any other uses for this thing now if I don't get it fixed or should I pitch it's
Thanks in advance

sorry for the confusion. the hedphones work fine on my laptop, PC, old walkman, etc. they just don't work on the player. the headphones that came with the zen = the same thing. the player seems to be operating fine, there is just no sound on the headphones when playing. thanks.
thanks to ut-king as well. i'm not so sure about my low level welding skills and may find out how much creative will change to fix.

Isn't 3833mb 40gb storage? I have a used 60gb zen xtra with 3833mb total storage space/free space and I am under the impression that 60gb should be closer to 5833mb, correct? Can anyone help me to understand if this is correct? I just got this unit, I have a zen touch 40gb unit that has 3833mb as its total space allowed and the Zen Xtra 60gb I bought used ( but never used acording to the seller ) has the same storage. Customer support just send a couple of form replys to download new firmware and drivers which I did, but that did not increase the space ( which couldn't be possible, could it's The dri've is fixed space?) Sorry to be such a newbie? Thanks for any help. Marc

Problem is the seller is on that auction site and has an explicit no return, no refund policy. I maybe able to go to squaretrade as he said it was new in opened box, and it was not new as his daughters name was on the settings part of the unit. It does say on the unit 60gb so I guess my next question is it possible for him to have opened the unit and replaced the 60gb harddri've with a 40gb? I also assume that this unit would not be able to be fixed or replaced under warrantee even though on his description a one year creative labs warantee is in place. I have the unit registered with creative and with the serial number. Does the hard dri've itself have a serial number on it's Thanks again for the help. Marc

• WMP and Mediasource will not recognise Zen Xtra with Playsfors

?I, like many people apparently, have been attempting to sync my Creative Labs 40GB Zen Xtra (firmware 2.0.03 - Playsforsure enabled) ) with my music files on my computer using either WMP0, or Mediasource with the Playsforsure Plugin installed. Even Explorer would be cool- but nothing recognises it.
?The problem I am having is that when I plug in the Zen, windows recognises the player as "MTP Media Player" and offers to start WMP for me, but when I get into WMP it doesnt see the Zen. The device shows in Device Manager under "Windows Portable Devices/NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra" but nothing else on the system recognises it- not Explorer, not WMP, now Mediasource with the Plugin. ?I have attempted to run "Creative Software Suite for PlaysForSure-enabled Creative NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra Players" but unfortunately everytime I try it says it cannot detect the player and will not install- It?says"Setup could not detect and portable device on your system. Setup will now install the necessary drivers to enable your device to be detected."
After?installing the correct driver itself it comes back and asks me to plug in the device and when I do and click next it says
"Setup could not detect and portable device on your system. Please ensure your portable device is connected and switched on.?If your player is not enabled with Microsoft's PlaysForSure, please ensure that Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware is properly installed before running this Setup program."? The correct firmware IS installed according to the "about" screen on the player itself.
I have gone thru the steps to edit the permissions in the registry under "enum/usb" as suggested in another thread by Daniel-CL, and still this does not fix it. Then as suggested by [color="#ff6633">SSR, I?tried reinstalling MediaSource first, followed by the Creative Software Suite for PlaysForSure-enabled Creative NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra Players.
(Still wouldnt let me install it)?
Oh, and I tried hooking it into my XBox 360, which Microsoft says will recognise a PlaysForSure enabled Zen Xtra. It wont recognise it either. So basically the player just sits in Device Manager and taunts me. It's there. It pops up when I plug it in. When I try to run a program that should recognise it, the little arrows on the player even light up for a moment to show communication with the program. But alas... nothing. I'm going crazy here.Did I miss something?

I had a similar problem with my Zen Touch, but the only symptom was not being able to install MediaSource or the Software Suite. I got the same messages that you did. I was able to use Windows Explorer to add/edit/remove files, but I wanted the Zen Media Explorer so that I could create playlists. After about 2 days of research and trial and error, I ended up fixing it by uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers.
If you don't know how to do that, here are instructions...
I'm using XP SP2, btw, so if you're using another version of Windows, it might be slightly different...
) With the Zen connected, Right-click on "My Computer"
2) Select "Properties"
3) Click on the "Hardware" tab and select "Device Manager"
4) Right Click on "MTP Device" (or MTP Media Player) and select "Uninstall"
5) Disconnect the player from the computer, wait about 5 secs, and reconnect.
When you reconnect it, the drivers will be reinstalled. Try running the setup again after that.
If that still doesn't work, look for random optional Windows updates, maybe?...esp. PlaysForSure, WMP, or USB/mobo/INF/Chipset driver updates...or maybe when it says "Setup could not detect and portable device on your system. Setup will now install the necessary drivers to enable your device to be detected," it actually is doing something, but it isn't apparent until you reinstall the driver. To be honest, I just don't know. The computer I'm using is only a few months old and I didn't have any problems installing on an older computer.
Oh well. I hope that fixes your problem.
As far as the problem with the 360 connectivity, I'm sorry I can't help you there.Message Edited by potestasx on -03-2006:28 PM

• Charge Nomad Juke Zen Xtra with US

Quick question, does anyone know if it's possible to charge a Nomad Zen Xtra (a few years old) with a USB 2.0 connection? I've tried connecting it, but it doesn't seem to charge like other portable USB devices I have do.
Maybe there is software/ drivers/ firmware I need updated before this will work?
Any help is appreciated.

Joe,
Unfortunately the answer is no. That player doesn't support USB charging.

• Zen Xtra with USB on car ster

Hi,
Can anyone clarify this for me?
I've heard that the new firmware will let you use the Zen Xtra as if it were a usb pen dri've, wil this allow stereo's with USB connectivity to read the mp3's off the Zen?
Thanks in advance for any information.

It works ok but the sound quality can be rubbish in the car
If the I-Pod can connect as a mass storage device to usb stereos surely zen have the capability?
craig :smileysurprised:
(usb stereo & usb car stereo, one zen touch 20gb = annoying
The iPod can't play music as a mass storage device either. USB stereos generally require an Ipod connector that can cost around $00. Apparently, Zen's aren't popular enough to warrant 3rd parties manufacturing these connectors.
There is more than one way to skin a cat, however.
For around $85, you can get a 40 gb 2.5" HDD and an enclosure. Just copy your non-DRM mp3/wma files to it, plug it into your stereo, and you should be good to go. And you'll have a handy backup of your music to boot.
Just something to think about....

• Zen Xtra with blank scr

Ok, so one night I am listening to my Zen Xtra and everything is fine, the backlight works, music is still playing, and I still have 2/3 battery left. But after glancing at the screen I noticed that the words and writing were gone. I tried all the buttons but still got a blank screen. Then i went to get a paperclip to reset it. With much relief, I saw the EAX symbol come up on screen. But after it had turned on completely the blank screen was back. It isn't my contrast, because it is set on 50%. The music still plays but i just can't see what i am doing. Can somebody please help?

So what should happen in rescue mode. Maybe you can show me what to press once i am in rescue mode b/c i can't see anything on the screen. I know what to do to get to rescue mode so you dont need to tell me how to do that. And if it is faulty, where do i go to get it fixed? Should i make a back up of all my songs?

• Zen Sleek Photo & Zen Xtra With Vi

I know I?ve posted about this before, but new folks visit here every day, and the information contained in these posts can get buried after just a few days. If the moderators wish, they can remove any earlier posts that I have put up here on this board.
This concerns problems with Vista and the Zen Sleek Photo mp3 player. The Zen software is not compatible and won?t install.
After receiving some information from ?Creative, and after some further experimenting on my own, I have put together a procedure that will, in fact, do a full install of the Zen Sleek Photo on a machine running Vista.
I have also discovered that this installation procedure also works for my Nomad Zen Xtra ? an unexpected bonus!
It worked for me, and I have received feedback from several dozen people already who have used this procedure with 00% success, so I know that it works!? I am currently getting three or four requests daily for this, and most have been kind enough to follow up and let me know that it solved their problem.
I will send this info, in Word document form, to anyone who requests it. Just email me at:

Dave, I tried to send email to ">?but it's bouncing back. Can you pl post your correct ID? I'd like to get the procedure for Zen Sleek Photo Installation on Vista. Thanks?

• Has anyone used a zen xtra with the new playdock i see advertised at cambridge soundwor

thinking of sinking my zen xtra permanently into a playdock but have yet to hear their sound.Would make a nice ,small home for my 0gs of music if the sound is good.need feedback before i buy since the playdock is as expensi've as the 30g zen xtra.

It's horses for courses really, what are you trying to achieve? You can pickup small amp and speaker systems for reasonable money nowadays from most places.

• Zen xtra with xbox

i tried connecting my zen xtra to my 360,it doesnt work....it there some type of firmware or something i have to download...thanx?

Just backup the songs onto your hard dri've before you install the firmware. You should always have a back up of your music on your computer anyway.

• Zen Xtra with Zen

I recently bought a Zen V 4G and have a Jukebox Zen Xtra 40G. When I installed the software for the Zen V, the computer doesn't recognize the Xtra. Any thoughts?

Hi,
Thanks for your elaborate answer!
However, the problem persists.
I don't get a notification to connect my player during the driver set up, however when I break off the set up forcefully (ctrl alt del) I do get the message that the system is waiting for my response. I guess that's the dialogue box asking me to connect my player.
I just can't find that dialogue box anywhere.
If I hook up my player anyway, Windows starts installing the driver and mentions that the Zen Xtra is now ready for use. However, it doesn't turn up as an external disk or something like that. And Mediasource won't install either because it keeps mentioning that it hasn't found any supporting devices.
Have you had this experience as well?
Kind regards,
Bart
Did you read the blog of the link I posted to you? Have you tried? installing? just the Creative Nomad Explorer? http://support.creative.com/download...ownloadId=8069 without installing MediaSource? I can't really say if it will work without MediaSource since I do have that installed on my Vista machine but you could try it. I only use that program to load my player. I do not use MediaSource5 to load the older player as since I have the PFS plug-in loaded on there & because of that MediaSource does not see the Zen NX. Of course create a Restore point on just computer before doing these things. Let us know how it goes.

• Zen Xtra with wierd lock condit

I searched and found no other lock up condition as mine is in now.
Unit history: Bought 2/04, never had a problem, never needed to upload new driver/FW/SW!!!
Battery was low (low battery displayed on screen) and I had to turn it off (nothing out of the ordinary). I plugged it into the home charger unit and the unit went through the normal boot up (make all the normal sounds too) and then the Menu screen appeared and it had the "triangle" next to music library (I thought it was playing) so I pushed pause and nothing happened, of course I did the repeated pushing etc. and tried every other button too, nothing changed its "lock up" mode. Pulled the AC plug and pulled battery, reinserted/plugged back in , same thing AGAIN. Tried the unit reset a Gazillion times and with battery in/out, AC in/out, everything you can think of and still the same result.
Also tried accessing it from the USB connection (to see if I could unlock it that way) and I get "player is not connected"
Anybody got a clue or advice (other than I have a $290 paperweight)??

Wow, what a night!!!
After talking to a "great" Tech CS guy at Creative I have a working unit. This guy convinced me to keep trying (I had already given up and asked for a RMA number) to get it into recovery mode and after about 4 hr's of on/off trying it finally happened (I was putting CD's in my laptop library). I had tried all the usual combinations (pause button in while pushing in reset and placing battery in, pause and power button held while pushing reset and placing battery in, etc. etc.) to get it into recovery mode and honestly I couldn't tell you which one did it because I was so friggin' mad/frustrated that when I saw the screen pop-up I let out a "yeah, take that MoFo" (this was at 2:37 pm too!). Well after that I selected Clean (scan disk) and that came back normal, then it automatically went into re-building library mode and that took forever (I was getting a bit worried), thank goodness I didn't have to reformat. After that it came back to the regular Menu screen and everything worked as normal.
Hope this might help some of you,
Don
By the way you can send your "out of warranty unit to Creative for a repair evaluation, cost $25 (he said if its the HD that is a $60 fee)

• Jukebox Zen Xtra 40 gig sound distort

I've had my mp3 player for about a year and haven't had any problems. But all of a sudden, the sound is weird and distorted. I've searched the forum and found very similar problems, but no solutions. Basically, you can hear the background music pretty well (although the volume is messed up), but foreground music and vocals are completely gone or completely distorted.
Same effect with all music, so it's not a problem with a particular mp3. And I tried different headphones -- same thing.
Some people have suggested, in response to similar problems, a firmware upgrade. So I'll try that. (Not hopeful though.) Any suggestions? This is seriously traumatizing. I've got 30 gigs of music on that thing.

Well, after reading the "headphone jack?" thread below, I think that's probably my problem, like so many other people. It seems like I was sold a defecti've product. And now I'm out of the warranty period. So that means, short of organizing a class action, there's nothing I can do, other than foot the bill for fixing a problem created by the company that sold me this product. There's something not right about that. Wish I could say I'm surprised. Goodbye, Creative.

• Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra stops working with XP following Windows Media Player 11 Beta Installat

Yesterday I was very pleased to find that my Creative Zen Xtra (model DAP-HD00) portable media player is a PlaysForSure capable device. Creative Labs, on November 9, 2005, released the Creative Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware v2.0.03. I installed this firmware (I had to install the Creative ZenJukebox Driver v.30.03 first to get Windows to recognize the device). Once the firmware was upgraded, Windows began recognizing the Zen Xtra as a MTP device and life was good. I was able to synchronize it with both Napster To Go and Windows Media Player 0.
After this, I went ahead and installed Windows Media Player Beta, which I just downloaded yesterday as well.
From a functional standpoint, WMP seems to run just fine. However, when I connected the Creative Zen Xtra (with its PlaysForSure firmware), Windows redetected the hardware. It first showed "Creative Jukebox Zen Xtra" in the tooltip, followed by "MTP Device" in the new hardware tooltip. Finally, Windows announced that there was a problem installing my new hardware and that it may not work properly.
Sure enough, when I went into Device Manager, my Zen Xtra was showing as an MTP Device with an exclamation point on it. More specifically, it specified the status of, "This device cannot start (Code 0)."
Prior to the installation of Windows Media Player, the Creative Zen Xtra showed in device manager with the following characteristics under the heading "Windows Portable Devices":
Name: NOMAD Jukebox Zen XtraDriver Version: 5.2.0.0 dated 8/30/2004Digitally Signed by Microsoft Windows Component Publisher
Driver File Details:C:\Windows\system32\wpdusb.sys - v5.2.3802.3802 built by dnsrv(bld4act)
Windows Media Player changed this to the following (the device now shows up under "Portable Devices"):
Name: MTP DeviceDriver Version: 5.2.5326.4762 dated 2/22/2006Digitally Signed by Microsoft Windows Component Publisher
Driver File Details:C:\Windows\system32\wpdusb.sys - v5.2.5358.4827 (WMP_.060509-2009)C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\wudfrd.sys - v6.0.5348.0(winmain(wmbla).0604-339)
The file wudfrd.sys is NOT digitally signed in this case.
As of now, my Zen Xtra is completely unusable on this system, and I need to sync it with my laptop for the time being, which still has WMP 0 installed on it.
Is this a bug with WMP beta? Is it a problem with my firmware? Since this is PlaysForSure compliant firmware, and it worked flawlessly with Napster and WMP 0 (before the MTP driver was updated), it would seem to be a WMP beta issue. I'd like to hear more official confirmation on the subject, however.
Some general details about my system are:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2Verified GENUINE Microsoft operating system using Genuine Advantage ValidationIntel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2 GHz, Hyper-Threaded processor2.00 GB RAM
Windows Media Player Version: .0.5358.4827Napster Version: 3.6.0.7 (US)
Any recommendations? Fixes? Some have suggested rolling back the WMP installation, but I would like to consider this option only as an absolute last resort.
Best regards,Matt

Ok, this worked out accidentally - but happily
I first installed the driver - not the media source - but the driver for the device.
After that the windows device manager yellow sign disappeared - apparently the device driver was registered by windows.
Then I Installed Mediasource 5 - the installation went thru fine.
Does anyone have any recommended updates to install, please also advise what benefits.
Thanks.

• Best way of using my zen xtra 60gb with speake

Bearing in mind i'm not very technical , but learning!
Can i use my zen xtra with amp and speakers system to act as a stereo system? when i connect it up the volume is really low and have to turn amp up too the max to get a loud enough sound?
What do i need to do/get/install to make my player into a decent enough stereo system?
Am i right using jack to twin phono leads in2 the amp.
Can I download anything/upgrade my player to increase its volume level?
Any help would be top!
Cheers
Jon

I was trying to do something similar, but whenever I turn the volume up past about 20% the sound starts popping and cutting out horribly; it sounds like it's clipping, but that doesn't make much sense, because it's so freaking quiet! The *only* two possibilities I can figure are, a) for some reason the Dynamic Range is phenomenal compared to CD players, thus causing even slight increases in volume to clip out, or b) there's noise in the track somewhere at a frequency that you can't hear but the stereo can reproduce, and it's loud enough to cause it to overload.
Neither of these seems very plausible though. What do you think?

• No driver found - Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra - WinXP

I have used my Zen Xtra for over 2 years now, with the same PC I am currently having problems with. I recently had to do a complete reinstall of Windows (note that I have done at least 2 other complete reinstalls during the life of my Zen Xtra, with no problems). Windows Device Managers sees the NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra, but with the yellow question mark and exclamation point. Each attempt at driver installation results in the same problem. The driver ("JB3MV2_PCWDRV_US__30_03.EXE") installs completely, I'm told to reconnect my device so the driver can take effect. When I do, the device is still marked in Device Manager with exclamation point and yellow question mark, and Windows continues to ask if it can find and install the driver. I have told it not to (knowing that I just installed Creative's own driver), with no success, and other times let Windows try to install the driver (hoping it would find the Creative driver that was just installed). No luck. I have even done another complete reinstall of Windows, and tried to install the driver before any other program or hardware installations into my system. No luck. Note that there are no hardware changes between now and when I have done other complete Windows reinstallations. It just no longer accepts the Creative driver. I have also tried to install the driver in safe mode, with the same results. I have also completely removed the Zen Xtra (showing hidden devices in the Device Manager), and tried to reinstall. Firmware version of Zen Xtra was upgraded over a year ago to 2.0.03.
Specifics:
Windows XP Pro SP2
38GB free hard dri've space
Zen Xtra firmware version: 2.0.03

I have the same problem. But when i try to installl it it says he is missing an .nfo file.
I removed WMP and reinstalled WM0 because is crap.
I have Windows XP SP2
I have the newst firmware on it.
Can somebody help me with this because it's annoying not to put any new music on your mp3 player.
I never experienced this before even after formatting my HD.
Almost the same problem as fritzm but not completely because het gets an different error.
I have installed the CD but that doesnt work either.
I have installed the software from the website but that didnt help because he doesnt recognize my player.
Please help!!
