Over 100 GBs of space on my HD is missing..

Hi,
I have a 15 inch Macbook Pro mid-2010 model(320 GB) and I seem to be missing over 100 GBs of HD space. I was getting the error "Your startup disc space is almost full" yesterday so I checked and noticed I had only 2.6 GBs of HD space left. I went into storage and noticed that over 180 GBS of space was being taken up by other.
I went through and cleared out about 6 GBs of space from my downloads and ran Omni Disc Sweeper to figure out what the heck is going on. After running ODS, it came back as that I was only using 192.7 GBs of space but my computer was saying I was using over 310!
I figured out a way to clear out about 18 more gigs of space with the HD Cleaner app and now I have 26.6 GBs of space.
I ran a program called Disc Art to see if that will tell show me where this hidden GB space is and that came back as the same thing, Im only using 168.9 of my HD space but my computer is telling me I'm using 292.3 GBs of space.
I have googled everything and I have checked all of the suggestions, it is not the time machine snapshots(I don't even have time machine turned on now), the mail duplication error, giant log file, or any of those other common problems.
I am so confused,
Here is a screen shot of the storage
I think the majority of it is coming from the Other category, but I am lost right now.
Whatever it is, seems to be gradually decreasing my hard drive space. Hopefully someone has run across something like this before.
Thanks for any help.

ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

First let me start by saying i'm not sure if this would be best under a different section, if so, I apologize.

Before i took it to the apple store and had everything transferred over (there were some problems with the new one not recognizing the old one) i had all the memory. My old MBP had about 175 GB out of the 320 GB hard drive left. So i found it peculiar that i only 125 GB left now. With the exclusion of about 145 GB of movies i put on the new one, i'm not exactly sure what is taking up the rest of the memory.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to free up some space or how to find out what is taking up so much space?
    Thanks a million,

p.s. I was digging around and i saw something about older versions of my itunes libraries...are those safe to delete? I have over a 100 GB of music and i don't need duplicate copies of the same library taking up space...

You could put the old version in the Trash (do not empty) and then run iTunes to see if all is OK. If so then empty the Trash.

  • "Backup Disk Full" error with over 100 GBs free on disk!

The subject line pretty much says it all. Any idea why TimeMachine thinks my disk is full? I have 3 drives: internal has 60 GB available, LaCie 500 GB has 145 GB available and 1 TB drive has 101 GB available. The TB drive is set for the TM backups. What gives? Any ideas?

This is actually most of a normal, though lengthy, log. The end seems cut off, though.
Hmmm. The above prompted me to go back and check the log again, at which point I realized that I'd forgotten to take off the "backup" filter I'd used to find the TM part. Sorry!! I do things in too much a hurry sometimes (often, actually). Here's the log again, starting from the exact same spot but ending 10 minutes later. This time it's EVERYTHING - NO filter set:

Some of these things sound REALLY weird to me - for example, the references to vaccuuming. Too strange! <LOL>
If your Mac is running at midnight, the log should "turn over" -- the current one (system.log) renamed to system.log.0.bz2, the previous to system.log.1.bz2, etc., and a new system.log started. So what you're seeing started 12 minutes after midnight.
Yes, I figured that out. What I find strange about that process, though, is that Console appears to number the logs backwards. In other words, the one after the most recent one is #0 and the oldest one in the list is #7. Seems odd to me but there's obviously some kind of rationale at work there. :>)
I have no idea what those 30,000 files were, but I'd strongly suspect the permission repair you did earlier. I also have no idea what the initial 480 gb it thought it needed was about.
That would make perfect sense if it wasn't for the fact that the permission repair came about 8 hours AFTER the quoted part of the log! Another odd thing, which I think I've mentioned already, is that the error message appeared some time after I got up, had breakfast, put the dogs out, etc. so it was after 9 am or so. I cannot find a repeat of the copied part anywhere else during that morning or during that day, as far as that goes, so the error report obviously referred to the 12-2am activity but it sure took its time appearing.
IF this backup completed normally, then subsequent ones should be very quick and small, unless there were many large files changed.
Also, this whole process seems very slow. How much memory do you have, and was anything else of note running at this time? Do you have other performance issues?
Generally it IS very fast, from what I can tell. Most of the time I don't even notice it happening, even thought the drive is pretty noisy. I have 2 GB of Ram and most likely had Photoshop, InDesign, GoLive, FileMakerPro all running, plus miscellaneous "small" apps like bookkeeping stuff. If I open up any MS Office stuff I try to quit them as soon as I've finished using them, as they do seem to cause problems (why am I not surprised?!).
And check the TM menu bar icon and/or System Preferences > Time Machine to be sure you have normal completions.
Most of the time I do; at least, I do whenever I think to take a look. It seems to have been chugging along quite happily ever since this "event", so maybe all is well now? I'm going to go in and clear off the old stuff, moving it to the LaCie drive, now that the Permissions should (hopefully) let me. That should help, I would think. I've toyed with the idea of burning the really old stuff to DVDs but I'd just lose them in the stacks and stacks and stacks (ad infinitum it seems at times) of CDs/DVDs I have here after putting together magazines/websites for 10 to 15 years. I never throw anything out if I can help it, although I did regretfully part with the old floppies once I no longer had a floppy drive. It's amazing how often I have to search out some really old photo or something that someone wants to re-use when a dog dies or something.
Thanks again (I really can't say that often enough) for your help with this!

  • 30,000 to over 100,000 pageouts of memory is this normal?

Hi, I have 8 gbs of memory in my Mac Pro. I notice that sometimes istat nano will show alot of page outs used up.
After restarting my computer, It usually starts at 300 pageouts, then it goes up to 30,000, then over 100,000. This can happen within a day of restarting my Mac or a few days.
These are the applications that I have open: Iphoto (45,000 pictures), Itunes , calendar, Quicktime X, Apple Mail, Finder, Safari, Preview.
Is it normal to have that many page outs with those apps open? Sometimes I don't even use my Mac much and it still goes up. Thanks guys

Depends on how much installed RAM you have, number of open applications, and the sort of work you are doing. By itself Pageouts is not an indicator of anything special other than over the course of time the computer has accumulated that total as a result of various applications having to page out data to the hard drive. A more significant indicator is the value in parentheses shown by 'top' in the Terminal. If that number is positive and increasing then it means you do not have sufficient RAM to accommodate all the applications you are running concurrently. See:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

  • Over 100 pages in iWeb

I have an iWeb project with two sites. One site has over 100 pages that consist of mostly photos. The other site is similar but with about 30 pages. Other than a really incredibly slow publishing time is there anything else I need to be concerned with? My iDisk has plenty of space to accommodate the amount of data.

You would make life easier for yourself if you had the sites on separate domain files.
With a site this big, make sure you have a backup of your domain file!

  • Waveform IRE Level Over 100 on Sony A77 but not for Canon T2i

Why does the Sony A77 have a white IRE level over 100 while the Canon T2i max out at 100? You can view this larger if you like so you can see the graph better, http://www.flickr.com/photos/davedugdale/6326846722/.
On my Canon I have highlight tone priority turned off and Auto lighting optimizer turned off as well. Also on both camera I have them set to a neutral picture style and the lowest contrast setting.
I am trying to do a test on which camera can hold the highlights better.
As you can see I matched the skin tone levels on the left by changing the camera settings to match each other so I could see what would happen on the right side where I drew a tree that is heavily back lite.
But it is hard to draw any conclusions when the Sony is "cheating" with higher IRE levels.
I wonder if it has to do with the color space? I don't think so because both are using the sRGB color space.
No transcoding was done to any of the clips dragged on to the timeline. Just "raw" files from the cameras.
The Sony A77 creates AVCHD Video (.MTS) files while the Canon T2i creates MOV video (.MOV) files.
What is interesting is if I use the same clips in Sony Vegas Pro 9, the Waveforms match at 110 IRE. Something wrong with Premiere?

  • Getting over 100 Facebook notifications per day (suddenly)

Hi.  My problem is HUGE.  I want to start by asking that nobody give me a hard time.  I've come across some forums recently where people just seem to want to go to there for the express purpose of  saying something that makes them feel superior to others & I'd like to not hear that.  So....
That being said, I have the Facebook app on my iPhone 4 and I've had it for a really long time.  I updated last week, and since then I have literally - NO exaggeration - been getting over 100 Farmville notifications per day.  I *DID* remove the FB app for a day to narrow down the problem to the Facebook app & not the Farmville app or just FV in general.  The notifications went away.  I and about a millon people trying to help me looked at & tweaked Facebook settings but there is absolutely nothing in there opting either in or out of them sending alerts to my phone everytime anyone sendsd me something or performs some type of action to do with Farmville & no one seems to know what on earth is happening.         Before this, I'd only get 1 or 2 notifications per day.
My little defensiveness here is that I do have a reason why I need to keep both FB & FV on my phone.  I'm not in your normal, everyday situation & I strongly depend upon these apps just to maintain my sanity while I'm busy being super un-healthy.  There's nothing wrong with playing Farmville or whatever you enjoy....people need to do what keeps them happy as long as its safe, legal or moral or wtvr....
So anyway, I have had hours where I get no alerts and have had periods of 10 minutes where I get more than 20.  I contacted Zynga & they are just clueless, they dont know why that's happening & blame FB.  On the FB end of things, there just doesnt seem to be any setting or whatever related to this.  So everything looks to lead toward something to do with the iPhone.  Especially since none of this began until I updated last week.  Oh, and Facebook is horrific about providing any type of user support.
    Desperate for an answer here!
BTW I googled the problem - I forget the exact search terms that I used but I did find other people with the same issue!  Only no solution.  One of the web articles that came up in the search was from a couple of years ago believe it or not.

There are a few things you can do to cut down on bandwidth. I set Firefox never to check the cache with pages online, so that if I go back to a previous page, it does not need to download again, but can be pulled out of the cache.
    browser.cache.check_doc_frequency - set to 2 (never)
I use Flashblock to prevent Flash items from downloading automatically. If there is any Flash item you want to see, you click the icon over that space, and that one item will load but none of the others on the page will load until you want them to do so.
I use Adblock Plus to block ads. This saves bandwidth as well, since it stops banner ads from being loaded, and blocks popup ads as well.

  • Organizer 12 - how to: zoom over 100%, use the Trackpad, compare images?

    English Version below.
Hallo zusammen.
    English Version
Hi there. I switched from Apple Aperture to PSE 12. Now I have my 11500 photos in the Organizer and a few teething problems.
I have specified in the preferences that you can resize photos to over 100%. This does not work. Photos are always fitted only in the window when the zoom lever is all the way to the right.
Only in the full-screen view you can scale over 100%. However, this also works if I have not set the setting in the preferences.
How do I compare multiple images? The manual describes to select from the View menu -> Compare images. This menu item does not exist for me. (German Version)
Also by pressing F12, nothing happens. Can I re-assign the button functions somewhere?
Last but not least: How can I use the zoom & pinch from the Magic Trackpad? I 'm missing that very much. Aperture was very user friendly with that.

You cannot zoom in on an more that fitting the screen space will looking at images in the Organizer's image well. This size may be much smaller than 100%.
There is no preference to "resize photos to over 100%".
There is also not a Compare option in the View menu.
To do either of these options (from the Organizer) you have to be in the Full Screen mode. From here, you can use the mouse wheel (or trackpad) to zoom up to 1600%. You can also compare images by selecting the Side-by-Side or Top/Bottom display from the "View" Options button on the Full Screen options bar.
To use the F-keys, you have to add the Command key, so Command+F12 will open the Full Screen Mode in side-by-side compare view.
If you purchased Photoshop Elements as a replacement for Aperture, there are a lot of differences that you will have to adjust to. Photoshop Elements and Aperture are hardly complementary applications. If you were looking for something like Aperture, you should try Lightroom instead.

  • HT200196 iCal reminders are clogging up my computers, iPads and iPhone.  When I view the Calendar list in iCal, it seems it has added a new calendar every time an event is added.  I have a calendar list that has grown to over 100.  How do I remedy this?

My laptop, iPad, and iPhone are being clogged by repeated iCal alerts.  Every time an event is added, it seems another Calendar is also added.  When I view the Calendar list in iCal, there are over 100...and the number is growing.  They can not be deleted with a simple "Select all" or "Delete All" and, when deleted individually, the list quickly grows to huge numbers again rapidly.  How do I keep this from happening and eliminate the excessive number of calendars?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.

  • How to load one report page at a time for heavy reports of over 100 pages.

Three banks merged together and now my reports have to pull massive combined data of all 3 banks. Even after tuning the queries, applying indexs, its taking long to load. A normal report now has over 100 pages.
Do you know if I can just load 1 page at a time and show it to user so the user donot have to wait for all 100 or more pages to load before they can see the whole report...? Kind of spooling...or something.
    Thank you.

I am not aware of a simple solution to set the file name. You need to set the content-disposition, but I don't think this is possible with any of the report parameters. A workaround is to save to save the report as a pdf file (destype=file&desname=myreport.pdf), and then open it in the browser after the report is finished.
About the timeout: this can be set in the repserver conf file (engineResponseTimeOut) or override it in the url with parameter ENGINERESPONSETIMEOUT. It's all in the documentation, so always start your search there!

Help please I can't save any documents now! Thanks in advance all, it is truly appreciated. how can find the hidden temporary files using the terminal what do i type in?

It's more likely a failed Erase Free Space, which creates a huge temporary file; that's why it looks like you have no more available drive space. You can recover from this. See these links

  • HT1711 I have over 100 songs I bought back before mid-2009 when Apple dropped this DRM thing. If I want to play those songs on Sonos, the ONLY way to do so is pay Apple another $25/year for iTunes Match and re-download them??

I have a Sonos system in my house and suddenly discovered that many songs I bought off of iTunes years ago are 'grayed out' when I try to play them from my iPhone or do not appear as options at all when I try to play them on Sonos from my overall music library.  It's well over 100 songs I bought back before mid-2009 when Apple dropped this DRM thing. From what I think I am reading, if I want to play those songs on Sonos, the ONLY way to do so is pay Apple another $25/year for iTunes Match (which I don't have any interest in) and then re-download them all in iTunes Plus format??

    Matt,
I agree it was not all communicated real well, but in your case it will work out.  You missed the program where you could have upgraded 100 tracks for 30 cents each (=$30) but now you can do it via Match (=$25).  It works pretty simply, per this document:
Can I upgrade my previously purchased music to iTunes Plus?
Yes. If you subscribe to iTunes Match, you can download your previously purchased music again in the iTunes Plus format. To do so:
You need to delete the original DRM song from your library first. Doing this enables you to download the song again in the iTunes Plus format from iTunes in the Cloud.
Click the Purchased tab in the iTunes Store.
    Click Music.
Locate the artist of the song you want to upgrade.
Click the iCloud Download icon next to the song you want to upgrade.
Just don't forget to put the Plus files on your hard drive -- properly backed up of course -- and to cancel the Match subscription before the second year rolls around!

I have been purchasing songs from itunes for the past year. I have over 100 songs. I recently got a new computer and I synched the iphone to it. I can't find 90% of my music. Where is it and how can I get it back? I checked itunes under purchased and it only shows 13 songs. Please help.

You can only sync with one computer. When you synced to the new computer it would have erased it and synced what was on the new computer.
You always need to have a backup, an iPhone is not a storage device.
When you get a new computer you need to transfer your library before syncing
If you don't have a backup you may be out of luck
The only thing would be if you're in the US and have access to the iCloud beta to reload purchases
