Over £1000 for mobile internet usage for a period of three days!!!???

can someone please help me on this. i am a complete novice when it comes to the iphone. im a pay as u go nokia user normally. my husband took out an orange contract with the iphone 4 as the handset as a gift for me. thought(and still do believe) the phone was an absolute fantastic piece of technology, so clever yet simple and user friendly. however the phone, three days after the contract was taken out, has been disconnected. the service provider (orange) has informed us the mobile internet useage has reached over a £1000!!! is there a possibility that mayb i havent clicked off the internet when im not using it. i thought i tap the safari button and that would automatically connect and tap the home button to disconnect from the internet. is this right? please help as we dont want to b paying so much for three days worth of having such an incredible handset.

When pressing the home button to leave Safari, Safari is suspended. A web page or multiple pages that remain open when leaving the app should not be updated in the background.
If you are accessing an email account or multiple email accounts with the iPhone's Mail app and the accounts are checked for new messages automatically in the background or if you are accessing an account that supports Push access for received messages with Push access enabled, when there are new messages received at the incoming mail server the messages will be downloaded in the background.
When selecting and using any app that requires internet access, when you are not connected to an available wi-fi network, data access via the cellular network will be used.

I participated in getting the free download of Mountain Lion for new Mac owners. It took me three days to finally get a code to do it and when I tried downloading it, the estimated time was 74 days 17 hours. Now an error occurred. What do I do? I am very frustrated and just want the great software to download in a resonalbe time!

Take your Mac to a location with a fast, relaible Internet connection that will be all yours during the duration of the download.
If you want to complain, PLEASE call Apple and do so.
Internet only downloads of OS X is completely stupid, it assumes everyone has reliable Internet everywhere and /or no data caps.

  • My IMac will not load installation software for Mobile Internet USB Plug

Hi, I have a new IMac(Leopard), and have recently loaded a new USB Mobile Internet Plug (SFR France) on to the machine in order to access the internet/mobileme.We live on a boat in France so being "connected" is so important to us.
The installation software is in the USB plug, it loaded successfully, connected and worked well for a period of time.
The IMac then seemed to "forget" the application, and did not open correctly and I had to "force quit" to continue.
I then removed the application and any bits I could find in other folders, and tried to re-install by inserting the plug again. The Icon to install only flashed on the desk top and disappeared so I could not perform this task.
I even tried to "restore" from Time Machine (and my external hard drive), the icon to install appeared on the desktop and I installed the application, but when I clicked onto the "connection icon" it jammed again and did not load.
I checked the status of the installation device by loading the program successfully on the Macbook Pro I have, and even loaded it onto a Dell PC and even had it checked at SFR, and all ok. So it appears the problem is with the IMac.
Any advice suggestions would be greatly appreciated, it is so frustrating!

I have had similar problems with both Sprint and Verizon units (Novatel u727 & u760). Solved both by going to provider sites and downloading SW.

  • 3.2 gigs of mobile internet usage in one day?

    Hello,
Problem: Got my phone bill. 500 Australia Dollars. Phoned my provider. They say internet usage. On the 30th November, I used 3.2 gigs of internet. That's double my monthly allowance.
    So... how is this possible?
First up, I'm not iPhone inept. I'm very cautious with my usage. I have wireless internet at home so I only go on the mobile network when I leave the house. 30th of November I went to work, where I can't use my phone, and came home.
I set everything to not download using mobile networks (podcasts specifically). I've had my phone for 6 months and I've never had a problem with this. I've never downloaded anything more 200megs in a day.
I went to my App history and found the only app I had downloaded that day, was Whatsapp... which I had deleted and reinstalled. (Could it be that?)
My service provider can't give me specific details regarding what was downloaded that day... because they say it would be invading my privacy.
My question is, how do I find out what I was doing that day? My Safari history doesn't go that far back on my phone. And it can't be that.
It must be an app. It can't be location services or anything like that, because it happened in one day... 3.2 gigs in one day. And of that one day I was home for half of it.
Please help me. There must be a way to track exactly what usage was used that day, and from where... 3.2 gigs is madness. It can't be right.
    I have an iPhone 4S.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

  • Updated - NEW BT FON App for mobile internet acces...

    Hi Everyone
Some updated info to add to that below.  We've had a few people asking whether the app can be used on the iPad or Blackberry - i'm afraid the short answer is no - not at the moment but it is something we are actively working on.
We launched the app initially only on Apple and Android, and we've had a fantastic response so far.  Over 70k downloads at this point, making it no. 7 in the Apple iStore downloads.  We've had lots of great feedback and we are working on developing the app further so we can bring it to you on other devices and operating systems.
We'll keep you up to date with any new developments on this forum, so please keep checking back!
    Thx
    Kerry
    Original Announcement:
    Hi Everyone
We have launched a BT FON free mobile application that will make it easier to connect to the internet on the move.  Once you have downloaded the app it will automatically connect your mobile device to our network of 1.6 million Wi-Fi hotspots when you are in range.
To celebrate the launch of the BT FON app, BT will be donating 50p to Children in Need for each app downloaded until we hit our target of ten thousand pounds.*
What does the BT FON app do?
The application gives BT Total Broadband customers easy mobile access to free and unlimited Wi-Fi and includes a mapping device which updates weekly so that customers can find their nearest hotspot.
The application also allows BT Total Broadband customers to
Opt in to BT FON (if they are not already)
Automatically log in or be prompted to log in when they are in the range of a BT FON or BT Openzone hotspot, depending on how they have chosen to configure the application.
Find the nearest hotspot from their current location and look up other hotspots using Google Maps
Get help and support through the FAQs loaded into the app
    How do I get it?
The BT FON mobile application can be downloaded from the Android market or iPhone app store. It is compatible with iPhone 3Gs and 4, and Android phones such as the HTC Hero, HTC Desire, HTC Legend or Nexus One.
    Quick links:
iPhone Users can download the application from: the app store or by typing  http://bit.ly/iPhoneBTFon into the iPhone’s browser
Android users can download the application from the Android Market or by typing http://bit.ly/AndroidBTFon into their devices browser
Once you have downloaded the app, all you need to do is input your btinternet email username and password, and choose to be automatically logged in whenever you are in a BT Wi-Fi area.
Because access is unlimited and free for BT Total Broadband customers there’s no chance of racking up extra costs on your mobile phone bill.
For more information please check the Fon website: http://www.bt.com/freewifi
    Thx
    Kerry
*50p from every BT FON application downloaded will be donated to the BBC Children in Need Appeal, a company limited by guarantee. Once £10,000 is reached no more donations will be given to BBC Children in Need as a result of this promotion.

    Hi Guys,
The ipod touch devices don't have GPS functionality and hence cannot automatically locate your position if it hasn't already got a connection. The mapping still works as long as you enter the location (postcode, street name etc); but will not work if you select "Choose a location to search>Your current location".
There is no reason why the app won't work abroad.  A colleague at FON tried it successfully in Madrid. It will work with any BT FON/BT Openzone SSID.
    Cheers

  • Is 1000 MB of internet enough for my iPhone 4s

I've bought an iPhone 4s brand new, but I'd like to know if 1000 MB it's enough to navigate and uses most of the app aviables. For iPhone
    Thanks a lot

With about 500,000 apps available there's no way to answer that question. I have 170 apps, and the most I've ever used in a month is 300 MB. But there are plenty of people in these forums who have used over 2GB (2,000 MB), so it depends what you are using it for.

  • Need help restricting internet usage for a minecraft server.

I have a WRT54G routher hardlined to a Ubuntu 12.04 server that is dedicated to minecraft.
I have two ports opened for Minecraft to run off of.
I'de like to give remote access to the computer to other people to help me maintain the server.
BUT I need to restrict ANY and ALL ability for them to access the internet by either blocking all other ports or something else. Id rather not have to restrict it through Ubuntu if I don't have to.
I'm a noob when it comes to figuring this out. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Pat

Let me verify a couple of things. You want to have your computer remotely accessed by others to help you maintain your server, right? You also want to restrict internet access to these, correct? They won't be necessarily running off of your connection. Remote access requires for them to have internet access to begin with. If your remote desktop setup is configured and working, I don't think there is anything to worry about.

  • What are the requirements to restrict internet usage for my users?

Am I requested to install a 3rd party software in order to restrict my users going to internet? Is there a software that comes with Mac OS X server that gives me this facility?
Basically I just want to restrict my users for certain hours during the day, these permissions should be applied on user bases or groups.
    Thanks in advance.

    Any suggestions or recommendations?
Is Squid my only way to go or there are other applications you recommend?

  • Best wireless speakers for macbookpro/internet usage?

    Hi,
I want to listen to my MBP (I-Tunes and Internet-streamed music) via wireless speakers. I use a wireless Time Capsule as my connection to the internet. My question is this: 1) how do I do this, and 2) what is the best product for around $200 or so?
    Thanks!

I would just get a soundbar to go right under the t.v. rather than trying to fit wireless into your budget.

  • Under my website data (Settings, Safari, Advanced) there are websites using a lot of data which I have never visited before. Several of these listed sites are for tracking internet usage.  Has my phone been compromised? Is there any other explanation?

I have recently discovered a website called bluecava operating on my iphone 4s, according to my website data log.  I've never been to this site, but according to my data log this site is using a lot of data, along with other sites which I have never visited before. Does anyone know anything about bluecava (I've done my research, but I'm not finding information about individuals using this to track someone), or have any other explanation for seeing un-visited sites on my data log?
Someone recently mentioned phone "cloning" to me, meaning that my iphone may be accessed remotely.  Any information is greatly appreciated!

Thanks a ton!  Yeah, I didn't know about any of this until I had reason for legitimate concern.  People should be aware of what's available.  Someone intent on tracking you won't mind paying bluecava to do it for them...
I'll definitely be updating my browser as well.  However, Lawrence, I did find during my research that bluecava DOES NOT operate based on cookies.  It uses your IP address to consistently track patterns of behavior, even
within multiple devices of one household, so that deterring the tracking is not as simple as turning off cookies to a site.  (See screenshot below from bluecava.com)
If you go to the bluecava site's privacy policy, you can actually opt-out, however, blogs have criticized bluecava for not explaining exactly what happens when a user opts-out.  It may be beyond our control...

  • Search for non-internet Apps for iPod Touch?

I have an iPod Touch, so I don't always have an internet connection when I am away from my house. I would like to specifically search for apps that don't require an internet connection to run. For example, many of the translation tools rely on Google to translate--I would like a translation app with a built-in dictionary that I can use without having internet access.
Is there a way to specify a search for only self-contained apps (don't rely on internet) when searching iTunes? Or do I need to open the description for each app to see if it relies on an internet connection?

No one answered you, but this is exactly what I am looking for too.
What I have found is that, without an internet connection, the iphone and touch products are little more than a pretty music player. I think they call it 'cloud computing'; focusing data storage and function on remote systems and just using the touch and iphone for access. That appears to be the way their development is going. It works fine when you are always near wifi, but where I work has no wifi and no cell coverage. I've found that for most work tasks, translation, secure documents, gathering data, GPS etc, the PDA or smart phone is a better fit. Those store data and applications locally on the unit itself rather than on the internet somewhere that you won't always be able to access.
With all the storage space on the touch and iphones, you'd think they could give a little of it over to onboard apps and functions, but until they do, at least there is the PDA.

  • Fix for excessive data usage for "mapping services"?

I'm experiencing a problem where my iPhone 4S running iOS 7.1.2 (though I saw this problem with 7.1.1 as well) uses huge amounts of cellular data (500 MB+) while sitting idle. Looking at usage in the Cellular section of settings reveals that the data is being used for "mapping services" under system services. I've turned off location services for all but a very few apps that truly require it. I've also turned off background refresh for all apps, cellular data for most apps and system services, as well as turning off the frequent locations feature. Unfortunately, even after making these changes, the problem occurs. Some searching does reveal a few other people reporting this (e.g. here). Unfortunately, I haven't found any reports of working solutions.
I'm traveling in Africa, and using relatively expensive prepaid data, so this problem is actually costing me real money, having used up 2 GB (~$60). If anyone has seen this and discovered a real fix, I would love to hear about it!

I had the same problem. Mapping Services used 1G of data over night while I was sleeping. My location services are turned off and anything else that could use mapping services. I reported the problem to Vodacom (Network service provider in South Africa) and they told me they had numerous complaints regarding this and they are going to refund my money, BUT they cannot tell me how to solve the problem going forward. Vodacom advised that Apple are upgrading their maps from Google Maps to their own iMaps application and that is why the data is being depleted in the background. This makes no sense to me though. How can they take data from customers to upgrade their systems. Very frustrating.
My next step is to go into the apple store and see if they can do anything. If I happen to find a solution from apple I will be sure to let you know!

  • Ads for mobile - any guides for idiots?

I've read somewhere that the ads needs to be placed on a web page somewhere and then open that web page in the iphone app with iframe or something. Examples and stuff I've read just confuses me (they being for Flex and/or Flash Develop).
So, what ad service do you recommend?
What code do I need to use?
    How do I use it?
I'm using Flash Pro CS5.5 (feel like I need to mention this cuz most poeple just expect everyone to use Flash Develop/Flex and stuff)

I'll agree that $45/month is pretty reasonable. A co-worker of mine picked up a 3rd party WAN card from MacMall.com for his MacBook Pro (ran him about $120 shipped. Apparently with Verizon if you bring your own WLAN card that's compatible on their CDMA network you can get their 5GB/month plan for $60 (plus taxes/fees/etc) without a contract.
