Over 3GB of swap files with 16GB of RAM?

Just bought a MBPr with 16gb of RAM (more for futureproofing than any actual need right now). I'm constantly checking Activity Monitor and "Free RAM" is always around 8GB or more. I notice, however, that the "Swap used" totals are quite high. I don't have any pageouts so why do I have so much swapspace being consumed? With an SSD drive in here, should I not be worried that the OS is using swapspace so much when it probalby doesn't need to?
Thanks!

K as far as I understood modern OS's, they write memory to disk when physical RAM is exhausted. My physical RAM has not been physically exhausted and yet I still see high numbers of pagefiles. This is my concern; especially since I have an SSD that can't be replaced I'd rather not accelerate its demise with unecessary writes.
That's the thing - it is way more complicated than that. That is how virtual memory worked 20 years ago. It is best to avoid looking too closely at memory values. When people do that they start seeing problems that aren't there.
I'm not sure how you can say mountain lion's virtual memory is optimized for SSDs and that most of the swap space doesn't exist, even though it exists in the form of pagefiles without backing it up with concrete sources.
I say that because Apple is moving to SSDs for their new machines, so that is where the focus is. Even with 16 GB, any application could exhaust your memory if allowed. MacOS X uses those swap files to keep that from happening.

  • Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?

Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?, Does the brand of the Ram matter ?
I installed Crucial 16 gb and the Mac runs just fine but Windows won't start. It gets to the login screen then it turns white.

I decided to make another try today after some reading and googling the internet.
I started windows with my old 4GB memory and changed the bootconfiguration with msconfig. I typed manually in max memory tp 16384 MB and saved the settings. Then I turned it off and inserted the 16GB ram again. Then it started really but when looking at the properties of my computer it says 16 GB installed but I can only use 2,16GB. So I opened msconfig again and changed the settings once more and restarted. Now it says 16GB installed but I can use 14,2GB so I guess it is ok now for some strange reason. I suppose the lost 1,8GB is for the system ?? Do I dare to turn it off again :-) what will it say next time ?
I am so happy and greatful for all your help, I really really appreciate it and I hope my solution will come to use for someone else with same problem.
    Thank You all :-)

  • Sudden Shutdown of iMacs with 16GB of RAM

An ongoing discussion of iMac shutdowns over at Apple Discussion has prompted me to try to get some answers to this issue that we too are seeing in one of our i5 iMacs with 16GB of 3rd Party RAM.
    http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=13311466&stqc=true
Recently we found that the issue could be repeated when transforming a layer in Photoshop CS5. Dragging the image around, resizing it a few times will consistently cause a sudden shutdown of the machine. Not a standard shutdown or kernel panic, but an instant off to black screen. The machine will boot right back up with no problem.
Further, we also found that this would occur when the Photoshop tile cache size was set to 128k. Setting it up to 1024k seemed to get rid of the issue and we were never able to recreate the issue when set to 1024k tile cache.
Now I would think to blame Photoshop, but it happened in CS4 and CS5. It also has happened in other apps as well. It just so happens that Photoshop
is doing something that exacerbates the issue and triggers it.
Now, my question is this. And it is rather technical in nature, so if any Adobe techs are reading this, I would love your take on it.
I'd like to know what is going on in terms of data exchange between, RAM, video card or swap space when an image is being transformed.
Does the change in the tile cache size change how large the chunks of data are that are cached to the video card as well?
I'm wondering what the change in tile cache size could possibly be changing that could alleviate this issue.
There are also a number of reports that say removing 4 or 8 GB to leave 12GB or 8GB configs alleviates this issue as well. Do machines with smaller RAM configs exchange data in different size blocks?
I hope this all makes sense. Any info would be appreciated.
    Scott

Not a standard shutdown or kernel panic, but an instant off to black screen.
That means that you have a hardware problem, probably in the RAM, but possibly in the motherboard.  (having inadequate power supply to the RAM is a common problem that causes this - could be a bad capacitor, or a bad design)
An Apple technician should be able to put a scope on the power and signal pins of the RAM and see the problem happen (looking for a capacitive discharge pattern in the signals, dropping below signal threshold).
Changing the tile and cache size just changes the RAM access pattern slightly, but doesn't affect GPU usage much.
Yes, Photoshop moves a lot of data in and out of RAM with highly optimized code - which tends to expose problems with the hardware sooner than other applications.

  • M58p with 16gb of RAM

I own an M58p 6209-D71 and want to upgrade to 16gb of RAM.
The latest BIOS allows 4gb sticks and according to Intel, regarding the Q45 chipset, the mainboard allows up to 16gb of RAM on DR2@800Mhz (and up to 8gb on DDR3@1066),
Will the 16 option be possible?
    Thanks in advance

Check out both the Kingston and Crucial memory websites for your specific model for what is possible for memory upgrades.
Both companies have a 100% guarantee (and lifetime warranty) for system model specific memory to be compatible with that system and it's factory memory.

  • Synchronization with no network (swapping files with a memory stick)

I've been searching this forum and reading the docs for DbLite 10.2 and I have not seen this mentioned.
Is there any provision in the mobile server and mobile client to synchronize the DbLite database by swapping data via some physical media like a memory stick.
In a military application that we are involved with, we are being asked to provide for situations where DbLite will exist in locations with no network to connect to.
I'd appreciate if anyone can provide any info or documentation references on this point.
    Thanks

    Morgan,
There is a sample demo called Open Transport demo. It allows you to transfer data via a physical meduim, a floppy disk in this case. It comes as a part of Mobile Development Kit. I am on 10.2.0.2.0 at the moment. Please look at $OH\Mobile\Sdk\samples\Sync\win32\opentransport. I think this might be what you are looking for.
    Thanks.

  • What gains do you see with 16GB of RAM

Having 6 GB of RAM in my MacPro 8 core, what gains would I see by ramping the RAM to 16GB.

CS3 will make great use of 10GB RAM. Except that Adobe forgot to include - and hasn't yet posted -
    ForceVMBuffering plug-in
It should be in the Extensions folder in the Optional Plug-ins folder. If it isn't, then we'll need to post it so people can download it. I'm checking various media now...
We're working on getting them available to users ASAP. Adam
OS X is happy to use available memory as cache (and more than just 8GB as well)... for those users working with large 1GB and larger files where it really helps so you can avoid to some extent your scratch RAID. And some people still need to use their expensive SCSI or SATA RAID of multiple 10K/15K drives. May seem extreme but.
And as Barefeats noted last week, CS3 is a good candidate for 8-Core.

  • Out of memory with 16gb ram?

I am running CS4 on an 3.0 8 Core Mac Pro with 16gb of ram and a raid 0 scratch drive made from 6x15k drives. I had my memory usage set to 92% with 10.5.6. I recenetly upgraded to Snow Leoaprd and was working on a 3mb file, with no other applications runining, besides firefox.  I was trying to use the quick selection tool and when I tried taking away from the selection I got the "out of memory (ram)" error. So I dropped the ram usage for ps it down to 85% and that seemed to work. Is this normal for Snow Leoaprd? In the past, people had recommended that if you had over 10gb of ram to set your ram usage to 100%, but I see that must no longer be the case?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Now I just tried opening up one page of a 9pg pdf file in CS4, and I got the "not enough memory" error again? I have 10.5.6 on another drive, so I went back to that operatinig system and tried opeing the same file in CS4 with the memory usage set at 92% and it opened up fine.

  • Cryptsetup: Swap encryption with supend-to-disk doesn't work

    Hello Community,
i'm trying to get swap encryption with suspend-to-disk support to a working state.
On my system only the /home partition is encrypted with cryptsetup-LUKS.
I'm using the howto on "Using a swap file" (with /home/swapfile as swap file) in the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm … sk_support
I followed exactly the given instructions:
    From /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
HOOKS="base udev autodetect encrypt block resume filesystems keymap fsck"
    From /etc/default/grub
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="pcie_aspm=force pcie_aspm.policy=powersave pcie_port=native ipv6.disable=1 init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd resume=/dev/mapper/crypthome resume_offset=16721572"
    From /etc/fstab:
    /home/swapfile none swap defaults 0 0
The swapfile is working. Suspend-to-disk also works. But when resuming, I always get:
ERROR: failed to open encryption mapping
The device UUID=... is not a LUKS volume and the crypto= parameter was not specified
    running hook [resume]
    Waiting 10 seconds for /dev/mapper/crypthome
ERROR: resume: hibernation device /dev/mapper/crypthome not found
Then the system recovers the filesystem of / and later after the passphrase input of /dev/mapper/home it is forced to recover the filesystem of /home.
Shouldn't I get a passphrase input when running the [resume] hook?
Where is the problem I have missed?
    Thanks in advance!

No. Have you read my posting completely?
I don't use a swap partition.  I'm using a Swapfile on my encrypted home partition. See the link in the first posting and go to "Using a swap file".

    Hello everyone...
My iPhoto '11 (9.4.1 (701.67)) Quits unexpectedly at end of import.  Im running OSX 10.7.5 with 16GB 0f RAM.
I've looked at a bunch of the other threads with this same question but nothing seems to help me.
The images are transferred from the card but are not placed in the iPhoto library.
I looked for the 3ivx file but couldn't find it.  I also tried to repair my color sync profiles and and use a fresh iPhoto library but that didn't work.
one thing that did work was if I did each photo 1 at a time but I'm trying to import about 200 raw photos so that would take some time.
Anything I can do about this.. Hope someone can help..
    Thanks

  • Problem with PDF 1.3-Export: Photoshop-Files with transparency over InDesign colored objects

    Hello!
    I'm using InDesign CS6.
    I'v finished now a layout for a folder, and I put a photoshop-image with transparency over a InDesign-rectangle which I have filled with a cmyk-color in yellow.
When I export a PDF with the Settings "PDF X-3:2002" (with PDF-Standard 1.3) the Photoshop-image shows uggley jagged edges at the border to the InDesign-colored background. However, the Photoshop-images which are over another bitmap-image (as background), this images don't show this annoying edges.
When I export to PDF-Standard 1.4 the problem doesn't occor, however my printing-service requests PDF 1.3.
I know, the workaround for this problem is, to replace the yellow background-color with an bitmap-file with the same color, but is there any other option to get a correct result without this more time-consuming image trick?
I think it has to do with the transparency reduction which is necessary if using PDF 1.3. When I examine the PDF-File in Illustrator, this edges occurs mostly at the borders from the tiles in which the image is cut during the transparency reduction process. Although, if I open the rendered PDF in Photoshop this jagged edeges are visible, so it is definitly a render error.
I would be glad if someone of you has a solution for this problem, in the attachment is an image which illustrate the problem.
    Best wishes

    Find another printer.
End of problem. It really saddens me to think that these Luddites are
still in business making no effort to move into the 21st century.
