Over 7 hrs for initial sync - is this normal ?

Gang,
I just bought a new iPod classic, after my original one was stolen, and it took just over 7 hrs for the initial sync of only 3300 songs. Is this normal? With my original one syncing was extremely fast. I assume it was because the old one used FW vs USB.
Arg,
JmD

Just to give you an idea, I can sync over 12,300 songs to my Classic in around 90 mins via USB 2.0.

At what stage it is freezing?
There are six steps or so.
Try resetting the iPod. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

That seems to be OK via WLAN!
It ist better to do the first backup via LAN-cable.

My hard drive was replaced. I am using time machine to restore. It is about 40 minutes into the procedure and the computer is still "looking for other sources" is this normal?

First go to iPhoto Preferences, look in both General and Advanced tabs to make sure that things are set to import from camera into iPhoto.
Then if that doesn't help, connect the camera and open Image Capture in your Applications > Utilities folder and see if you can use Image Capture to reset the import path from the camera to iPhoto.

when go into 'help' it shows 'downloading firefox 3.6 11' this has ben like this for 2 days - is this normal?

On a broadband connection the download would normally take less than a minute. The software update process may have run into a problem, try the procedure in the "Software Update not working properly" at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update
You may have to manually reset the software update feature as shown in that article.

  • CCB-MDM Integration | Acknowledgement Message for Initial Sync Reqeust

    Hi All,
We are intergrating the CCB-MDM and loaded the contact information to MDM env, but there is no acknowledgement message fired from the MDM. And verified that the +ve, -ve Acknowledgement algorithms are not plugged in to "*D1-InitialSyncRequestContact*" BO lifecycle.
But these algorithms are plugged in to ongoing sync request BO's.
Is there any configuration/installation wrong/missing in the env?
    Regards,
    Guru

At my previous project we ran into the same 'issue'. The response from Oracle Support:
Because of the volumes involved during initial synchronization, and because the nature of initial synchronization is iterative and closely monitored, no acknowledgements are going to be sent back from MDM. Implementations may choose to delete the initial sync records after they have been produced, or introduce a standard Transition To Next Default State monitor on the Awaiting Acknowledgement state of the parent BO when initial sync requests are being produced. This way, the sync request transitions straight through to Synchronized without waiting for a response from MDM.

  • Is initial sync glacially slow normal?

Moved up to a itouch 64GB from 80GB ipod classic.  The initial sync with iTunes library is painfully slow.  Almost deathly.  Is this normal?
I'm just syncing music.  No photo or video.  Any way to speed it up?

It's been syncing for 3+ hours and has moved 2100 songs out of 9600 or so.  At times it will zip thru 5 or 6 songs in less than 20 seconds, then spend 5 minutes for the next 5/6 songs.
Can I cancel the sync or suspend it without losing what's already been synced?.  Then do the rest overnite?
    Thanx for your reply.

    Hi yacht61,
I would say that is definitely not normal! Are you having trouble logging in or converting a file?  For starters, please try the following:
Clear the browser cache and try again.
    Try a different web browser.
If the problem occurs when you're converting a file, try converting a different file.
Let me know if the problem persists, and also whether it occurs when logging in or converting.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Time Machine taking over a WEEK for initial backup

While several applications (Mac the Ripper, VLC, MPEG Streamclip, and QT Player Pro) were working simultaneously on a big chunk of video from a homemade DVD, my screen went dark with a message "You must shut down your computer." Took a couple of restarts to get things looking normal again -- except for Time Machine (running fine for well over a year), which subsequently couldn't complete any more backups.
After several tries to get TM working again and finding it very very slow, I tried to start clean:
    a) checked and repaired my HD (used Applejack)
    b) erased my external TM partition with Disk Utility
    c) ejected external (Seagate 1.5 TB) drive, disconnected it, powered it off for a few minutes, then reconnected and re-powered it
    d) deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
    e) opened TM Preferences, re-selected the drive, re-entered the usual exclusions
    f) allowed backup to begin after 120-second countdown
I don't know how to start TM much cleaner than that.
The first message was, "No pre-backup thinning needed: 196.95 GB requested (including padding), 976.06 GB available." As expected, correct? Well, that was a week ago! Looking at the console messages, I have seen steady, but abysmally slow progress since 02:10 on 5 December:
    Dec 5  23:19:22 Bobs-iMac com.apple.backupd[14385]: Copied 21.2 MB of 164.1 GB, 360 of 1097465 items

It's progress, and I keep hoping that suddenly Time Machine will finish with a burst of accomplishment. But at this rate, it will be months before the first backup is completed.
Suggestions welcomed. (Start over? What will be different?)

I'm not familiar with Applejack; I assume it uses the same "works" as Disk Utiltiy (the diskutil UNIX command)?
You listed 1-5; I assume you also checked or tried 9-14?
The Time Machine Buddy widget initially was giving me information, but for the last several days (even after uninstalling and reinstalling TMB), it's been blankly saying, "No Time Machine information found." I thought it was reading from the same place that Console gets info. (Is it?)
Mostly; it reads the current system.log and the prior archived & compressed one, system.log.0.bz2.  Sometimes if either is very large and/or corrupted, it will hang or won't show anything.
    > You might try installing the "combo" update...
    <Gulp!>
I'd feel a lot better about trying that if I had a backup somewhere. As of now, I have NO backups.
It's always a good idea to keep "secondary" backups.  See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.
Since you don't have TM backups now, if it's large enough, you might be able to partition the TM drive and put a "bootable clone" on a separate partition, until you can get a second HD.
Question: Given that I'm already running 10.6.8, will the system let me try to "combo update" to 10.6.8?
Yes.  The "combo" contains all the changes since 10.6.0, so is fairly likely to replace a damaged component of OSX.

  • Been waiting over 2 hrs for activation

There is slow and then there is just dead stop. For god sakes they shouldnt have let me do it if my phone was going to end up useless..
This is ridiculous. I was already thinking about the Galaxy S4 and now I am for sure going to switch. Contracts up in a month. Steve Jobs was a visionary, whoever is leading this company now is driving them into the ground. Nice stock price.

No one forced you to update today. The servers are overloaded with everyone trying to update at the same time. No business would have the resources to make sure that everyone around the world could update without any problems on the same day. Enjoy your S4, but don't update it on the same day as everyone else.

  • 30,000 to over 100,000 pageouts of memory is this normal?

Hi, I have 8 gbs of memory in my Mac Pro. I notice that sometimes istat nano will show alot of page outs used up.
After restarting my computer, It usually starts at 300 pageouts, then it goes up to 30,000, then over 100,000. This can happen within a day of restarting my Mac or a few days.
These are the applications that I have open: Iphoto (45,000 pictures), Itunes , calendar, Quicktime X, Apple Mail, Finder, Safari, Preview.
Is it normal to have that many page outs with those apps open? Sometimes I don't even use my Mac much and it still goes up. Thanks guys

Depends on how much installed RAM you have, number of open applications, and the sort of work you are doing. By itself Pageouts is not an indicator of anything special other than over the course of time the computer has accumulated that total as a result of various applications having to page out data to the hard drive. A more significant indicator is the value in parentheses shown by 'top' in the Terminal. If that number is positive and increasing then it means you do not have sufficient RAM to accommodate all the applications you are running concurrently. See:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

  • Dialing area code for local call - is this normal?

Just had my FIOS triple play installed over the weekend. In the recent past I've used VOIP providers Optimum Voice, Vonage, Packet8, MagicJack and Ooma, and FIOS is the only one that makes me dial my area code to make a local call (I'm in area code 516, where it is not normally necessary to do so).
Is this a bug in the system, and if so, are there any plans to fix it? When I first signed up with Optimum Voice they had a similar problem, but that was 9 years ago!

It is disgraceful that when I signed up for FIOS that I was  not informed that I would have to us my area code to call my next door neighbor!!! My realtives that use Fios do not have to do that. They advertise like everything is local buy when I called to complain I'm on the phone with people in Texas who do not even work for Verizon!!!  I will be call the Public Service Commission, Better Business Bureau and Consumer Affairs on Monday. The Technical Support  people who I waited on hold 15 minutes to speak to were rude and say if I pay more I can have this issue resolved!!!  Bait and Switch if I ever heard it!!

  • Time capsule is taking months to do an initial backup, is this normal? If not, then what is the fix?

I bought a Time Capsule 2 years ago to use as a back up for a mixed Windows, Apple household,  I was having trouble with the Windows back up and gave up on it.  It is now being used as an Apple only back up.  However from the time it was set up in Dec 2011 to now April 2012, it does not appear to have completed the initial back up.  Furthermore the Apple instructions are very obtuse on how to view the items that are in the backup.
We can find no way to view the drive contents to try to see what has been backed up so far and what still has not been done.
    Any help would be appreciated

Well it doesn't really matter because it sounds like it has messed up.
I think your initial setup was wrong. If you are on lion OS make sure you download the 5.6 utitilty.. also make sure you do the initial back with the computer plugged in by ethernet.. otherwise it can take forever.
Do a disk erase and start again.. if it has never completed.. something is seriously out of wack..

  • When browsing the web or using an app, a faint image of the screen stays on for a while, is this normal ?

I am only probably on the screen for less than 5 minutes, yet when I goto the home screen, or play a movie for example, I can still see the previous image from what I was using before in the background, any help....thanks in advance.

I havn't noticed that on my first gen iPad, when I go back to my homescreen via the home button I just see my homescreen not any after-image. Try closing all your open/recently used apps completely and see if it still happens after you re-open them : from the home screen (i.e.not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
