"+" Over Applications, "?" Over Application Icons

Hey all,
I just purchased a new Macbook Pro 15" (2.53GHz, 4GB, 320GB HDD). I was skeptical of using Migration Assistant to move all my stuff from my old G5 desktop (see signature) that was still in PowerPC world (3 years old this past May!). All went perfectly fine and I'm cruising along with my new MBP without any hiccups. Chalk one up for the Migration Assistant...
However, I noticed one small thing: In a Finder window, the "Applications" tab under "Places" has a small plus symbol ("+") over the word "Applications," and when I go to the application listing, every single one has a question mark ("?") over their own icons.
Every single application (with a few exceptions that I was expecting, like VPN Client, MATLAB, et al) works just fine. I've tried them all.
Why are there "+" and "?" all over my icons?
Thanks!

Looks like the issue may have resolved itself...
I did my first backup with Time Machine last night and all the "?" and "+" have gone bye-bye. I expected Time Machine to maybe flip out with a new computer, but it just made a separate folder and did it all without any problems.
Is this really the solution?

  • How can my application icons draw slowly?

I'm trying to trouble shoot how it's possible that my new MP 5,1 is slow to draw simple application icons when first opening the Applications folder, I see generic icons until they resolve to the actual ones.
My previous MP1,1 with dual 8-Core upgrade never did this and this machine, Apple assures me that my new MP while only a single Quad core is a faster processor, with faster RAM and a faster Graphics Card (Radeon HD 5770).
I’m running 10.7.5 Lion but when I boot off my Snow Leopard drive (kept for needed legacy non-Lion apps), this redraw issue doesn’t happen, which I assume implies this is a software vs. hardware issue?
AppleCare suggests I do a clean install on my Lion drive, which I haven’t done over several OS upgrades, which I really should do regardless as my system software is quite the Frankenstein conglomeration by now.
But I’m still wondering, if part of the issue might be my graphics card is inadequate in the Lion environment plus running 2 monitors and should I either get a 2nd 5770 card to have a separate card for each monitor, or maybe get a 5870 for the HP 30″ monitor and use the 5770 for my Cinema Display (which is more for holding extra Desktop files and tools windows from various apps both of which are low level use).
Or is the Radeon card I’ll conceived and to do it “right” I need to swap out to a higher faster card(s).
    SPECS: 3.2 Quad Core, stock Radeon HD 5770 – running a 30″ HP LP3065 & good old 22″ Cinema Display, Lion 10.7.5
I’m also wondering if I goofed not getting the 3.3 GHz 6-Core processor instead of going with stock 3.2 Quad Core?
Or since the Snow Leopard drive draws fine with no lag time, that this is in fact probably a problem with my Lion drive and a clean install should speed things up?

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Drag and Drop won't work and Application icons turned to folders

Today I lost the ability to drag icons. After a bit of searching on the internet I read that deleting the Library/Cache folder might clear it up. I did so, then rebooted the computer.
Now all my Application icons have become folder icons. What's worse is all my files show a blank icon and say there is no application present to open them when I attempt to open them.
And I still can't drag my icons.
    What should I do?
If I could just get drag and drop back in action I could back up my data to my external HD and do a fresh install.
Or is there some way to move files without dragging them?
Is there some way to get the Cache folder back to normal?
    I've already repared premissions.
    I'm running OS X 10.2.8
    700 Mz eMac Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Here's more on Drag+Drop;
Here's Apple doc.#107247. Apple says to restart your Mac as many times as it takes to allow drag and drop again. This problem is limited to some Jaguar users. It may take numerous restarts.
It is also suggested you install the 10.2.8 Combo update. You can install right over your present 10.2.8 with no issues. Make sure you unplug all USB and FireWire before installing. Just to be safe, Repair Permissions before and after the install.
If none of the above works (make sure you restart 100 million times!) download and install the free Dragster 1.61 program which addresses this issue.
    Cheers!

I use picasa for my photos..currently there is a question mark imposed over the icon on the dock and it won't open...what does this mean?

The icon in the dock is a shortcut to the app itself.....for some reason the icon has lost contact with the app.......go to your Applications folder and drag Picasa back to the dock....a new alias (shortcut) will be created.....

When I try to connect to my application icon it states "cannot connect to itunes store"  why and how can I fix it

also, how do you connect to internet, cellular data network or wi-fi....you might also try it with wi-fi turned off and see if it works over the cell data network..this would eliminate any proxy issues with the wi-fi network...

  • 3 Suggestions for Application icons

    1. Keep application icons in the same spot after an update. It's annoying to have to move the icon back to its place after each update.
    2. When moving icons around, allow for the scrolling of more than one window. Every time I have to drag the icon rightward to the next window then release it and do the same thing over and over and over again until its in the proper place. But this would be less of an issue if the first problem were fixed.
    3. Allow for additional windows to the left of the main window (not just to the right). Navigating to the proper window would be so much easier if I could scroll 2 windows to the right OR 2 to the left instead of 4 to the right. And I guess I could fix this by moving all of my front window icons to the 3rd window and placing the other icons on the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th windows, but see suggestion #2.

As mentioned, update 2.1 fixes your first issue.
Your second, I don't have that problem. I can drag an icon to side, it flips to next screen, then DON'T let go, just move to left just a tad then back right (just need to have it register a move) and then it will flip again...no need to let go and pick up again. Just a slight finger move is needed and I can understand why.
Last, would be a nice update, but as suggested, this is a user to user forum, not a place for feedback. Can suggest at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

  • Application icon recovery

    Hello,
An icon for an application installed on my 9810 has disappeared. When I search for the app, the icon shows in a shaded or half-tone manner. I can activate the app when I click on this subdued icon, but unless I search for the app, it's icon is not visible anywhere.
Does anyone know how to recover or restore an icon?
    Many Thanks.

  • [Gnome 3] Application icons show transparency incorrectly on mouse-ove

    Hello,
my gnome 3 installation works properly, however the application icons of both the sidebar left and the application screen have a weird bug where the transparent parts of the icon show some kind of checkerboard pattern when they are highlighted by moving the mouse over them. (The graphics bug appears when moving the mouse on the icon, while the mouse is on the icon the transparency is shown correctly).
I have no idea what causes this or even how to call that bug, so its hard to search for it

  • Hi, i have lost my camera and applications icons! I have syched my phone, which is what they told me at the phone shop, but they have not returned! Does anyone know how to get these back up?

Hi, i have lost the camera and applications icons off my phone.  the phone shop told me to synch my phone on itunes, which i have done but they have not returned.  Could anyone plz help me?

this is a follow up from the profane post earlier....
i have done this twice in two other posts..
here is my problem.. i started off trying to update itunes, it failed twice and said i needed to install manually via tools.
the only place to get to tools is the pop up box that appears when you click check for updates.. if there is an available update then the pop up shows up with the quick time and itunes files to download. so i finally figured that out. i clicked on tools and manual update, four files were saved to a file. Apple mobile device support, another one similar, itunes, and another one i cant remember. I only downloaded the itunes file seeing as though thats all i needed to accomplish in the first place.
so then i restarted my computer bc you need to reboot and then reopen itunes for update to take effect. once i have itunes back open i plugged in my new 5s which i am trying to sync to my computer to get all my stuff back bc i lost my previous phone over the weekend.. once i plugged the phone in an error stating i needed to unistall the apple mobile device support and itunes and then reinstall. well i dont know where those files were originally stored on my computer AND since my itunes was updated, just not the other 3 associated files, when i click check for updates it says its up to date and then pop up containing the quick time and itunes does not pop up thus i cant get back to the tools tab to manually save the 4 files again.
so i was just going to uninstall itunes all together and then i thought well what happens if it erases all my photos apps songs etc... which would defeat the whole purpose in the first place of me trying to sync my new phone to get all my stuff back.
so i literally have no idea what to do at this point.. if you have read this you are probably just as confused as me...

  • My iphoto library folder with files of my pictures is missing from the pictures folder, only the application icon remains.  I have read through similar discussions but have not managed to fix the problem with the recommended solutions.  Can anyone help?

I have a Macbook Pro with iphoto '08 running on Mac OS X version 10.5.8.  I used to be able to go to my pictures folder on my HD and access my pictures via that iphoto library folder.  There used to be a small arrow next to the iphoto icon with all the albums then listed within the folder (to the right).  That arrow is now gone and all I have is the iphoto application icon which just reopens iphoto when I click on it, but I want to be able to access the data files.  Somehow I do have files btwn 2008 and 2009 but it hasn't created these since then...Could someone please help me to restore this ability?  I have read other similar posts but they seem to be related to lost data all together and I do luckily have all my pictures in iphoto still. I just can't access them in the pictures folder which means I can't access them on my external hard drive.  I am now out of start up disc space somehow so I figured I had to delete some albums (I have 12,090 pictures) and do have them backed up but want to make sure I can go back for them when I need them.  I did export all the pictures to a folder on the hard drive but it is all 12,090 in one long list with only numbers as names and not in any order, this will be a nightmare to access later!  Please help!  Thank you!

You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
That indicates that that is your library.  Put it in your Pictures folder if it already isn't there and make sure it's named "iPhoto Library".  It should look like this:
    Now launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select that library to open.  If you get that same message close iPhoto and try the following;
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • The itunes application icon on my dock does not bring up itunes.  Haven't had a problem with this in the past.

The itunes application icon on my dock does not bring up itunes.  I have no problem accessing itunes from my iphone though, so I believe it is computer related rather than an itunes issue.  Haven't had this problem before.

Does the icon in your dock look like this?
Can you open iTunes successfully from your Mac's Applications folder?
Are you running the current version of iTunes (11.2.2)?  If not, get it from here:

  • Application icon doesn't open

Today out of the blue Photoshop will no longer maximize a window minimized to the application icon.
I have tried resetting the .plist file and resetting Photoshop neither have solved the problem.
I can long click on the icon and see and open the minimized window like Expose but that's the only way I can maximize the window.
All other apps work fine. It's just Photoshop.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

1.) What are you doing with the App-V Icon path? e.g. %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\AppV\Client\Integration\<GUID>\Root\AppVClientUX.exe.0.ico ?
I guess you could workaround it with deploying the icons to a central location and then pointing to the icon out on a central share. Or put the icons in a machine location...I haven't had this issue but that's just off the top of my head.
2.) I have not used App-V 4.6 in an environment like yours BUT would pre-caching the applications be possible? Any chance you'll be moving those apps into App-V 5.0 soon?
