Over Clocking in turbo mode

I have found a clock speed that works good but i can only use it in slow mode which turns off the performance mode on the memory. Is there going to be a Bios update for this prob. Or am i the only one who can't OC in anything other than slow mode?.
the turbo mode only works i can't even use the best one it just freezes up.

I`ve got the same setup with stock cooling, origanally had kingston kvr400x64c3a/512 x2 value ram, had to get better ram to overclock with that ram turbo and seargent were best settings possible. As for pat\mat (performance mode other than slow) looks like about 220 fsb is its limit for most people even my new ram craps out on performance mode(fast) at 217. For overclocking high speed ram is best like 500+ (expensive), with your extreme cooling try ddr frequency of 333 or 266 and pump up the fsb, but like I said with my value ram I didnt have much luck overclocking.

  • U400 has over clocked itself to max turbo boost at all times.

    Hi all,
    I have a U400 099329U with processor i5 2430M @ 2.4 GHz with turbo boost up to 3.0GHz.
Recently I noticed the unit getting quite hot with very slow charge times/high power drain on battery and noticed the Intel turbo boost monitor was always at the maximum of 3.0 GHz and would never drop. I lowered the max processor state to 99% in power management, now it stays at 2.4GHz with no turbo boost or energy saver modes. I have also returned the system to initial state and the problem still persists.
Any ideas as to why it started over clocking itself in the first place and how do I get things back to normal?
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Anyone?

  • How damaging is it to over clock a device

How damaging is it to over clock a device? I know over clocking is damaging. But is it the extra heat produced, or trying to use the capacitors to fast or something technical. If it is only heat, I can keep my MSI VGA card cool enough to over clock it.
Does a chip start to become damaged or work less effeciantly if you raise the temperature. The card may work better at 5 degrees more temperatur, but does this damage it, or is there a certian temperature range. (I'm guessing temperature damages it only)
I also thought most comanies disapproved of over clocking. Why does MSI seem to encourage it? Is this a bad or good thing?

Why not have the best video card for an extra 6months until the next best one comes out.  Or run new games on an older video card.  That's what makes it worth the effort and the small amount of risk.
If the overclocking/mod is done by someone who has a clue, and the reason to do so is to provide functionality to play games that require a higher frame rate or performance then one could say it may be justified. If one is not experienced in these areas and/or saved forever to obtain a card, overclocking may not be in the best interest to the user. Part of the problem is often many users lack the judgement or are driven to beat the latest benchmarks and end up with a keychain in the process. I can see overclocking towards the end of the lifespan of a high end card, but with todays latest and greatest..I don't see the point.
Heat is the determining factor and the killer to all components, not just higher voltage wich I believe increases heat. Heat causes faster deterioration and shortens the life of any component on a molecular level.

  • Thinkpad T420s - is it safe to run the CPU on PM 'Maximum Turbo' mode 24/7?

    Hi guys,
I have been playing around with Power manager system settings and observed following core frequency behaviour:
Maximum Turbo - clocks all cores close to their Turbo Frequency (3.2GHz on mine) and they stay there, regardless if
                                 under load or not
Turbo - frequency jumps between 2.4GHz and 3.2GHz
               - under load jumps to 3.2GHz and stays there (while under load)
Balanced - frequency jumps between 2.2GHz and 2.7Ghz
                     - under load jumps to 2.7GHz and stays there (while under load)
Low - frequency locked to 800Mhz, regardless if under load or not
First, I would like to ask for confirmation if this is really how it should work, and/or if someone is able to observe different behaviour.
Secondly, there is virtually NOTHING in the PM documentation that describes these parameters and what they do!
My main question: How safe is it to use the Maximum Turbo mode 24/7?
I can imagine that this CPU was not designed to run on 3.2GHz 24/7 and that the Turbo Boost is expected to occur only ocassionally.
Even if I choose to ignore the heat factor, would this mean increased wear on CPU?
Could the 'Turbo' mode be regarded as safe?
After some extensive testing, I can really see performance boost between 'Balanced' (which doesn't use Turbo) and 'Turbo'.
What I don't understand is why 'Turbo' seems to be jumping to Turbo Frequency, when the CPU is idle.
I would appreciate any comments and observations.
    many thanks
    //Matt
I used HWInfo64 to observe the CPU frequency and Prime95 to generate the load
    CPU: Intel Core i7-2620M
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have the T420s with the Core i5 processor. My observations are similar to yours, except when I'm on the Balanced and Turbo settings, the frequency drops to 800mhz when the CPU is not under load.
There is one option you forgot to describe: the "Lenovo Turbo Boost+" option in the power manager. This option appears to lock the fan at a high RPM to cool the CPU more quickly. This would reduce any thermal throttling when running at high clock speeds for a long period of time.
Regarding why "Turbo seems to be jumping to Turbo Frequency when the CPU is idle", please note that your CPU is never completely idle. WIndows and its applications run many processes and tasks in the background, and it is normal to see a burst of CPU activity every couple of seconds. To observe this, download the "Sysinternals process monitor" utility and watch all of the background activity that occurs.
Regarding the increased wear on CPU, running at high temperatures reduces the lifetime of electronic components. There are no problems other than the "heat factor", but excessive heat can be a significant problem.

  • Tweaking Turbo Mode

I've been reading through all these threads trying to come to grips with all the new features available in the Z77A-GD65 BIOS because I haven't overclocked in several years. In that time I'm afraid I've lost what little mojo I had in that regard. I originally wanted to just overclock all 4 cores manually and leave it at that since I know the CPU I have can handle 4.8GHz very easily. (I had it on my P67A-GD65 for about 2 years at 4.8 with no problems)
Sure...I could take the time to research each of these settings on my system, but I would prefer not to burn up my new motherboard and CPU.
As I said previously, I'd just manually overclock my CPU to the highest level possible and leave it there, but when I got this Z77A-GD65 this "Turbo mode" thing has me intrigued...
It seems to be enabled on my board and my CPU goes as high as 3.8GHz when running Unengine Valley.
As I was reading through one of the other threads I saw Froggy mention the Turbo method of overclocking. Can someone educate me on how to set that up on the Z77A-GD65?
Currently, Turbo increases my clockspeed to 3.8GHz, but no higher even when I set the CPU Multiplier to 40 in BIOS.
I used to run this 2600K CPU on my P67A-GD65 and I know for a fact it will do 4.8GHz at 1.31v and never see north of 75°C under stress testing (Intel Burn Test, High Stress Mode, 30 passes)
I would prefer to use Turbo Mode on this board instead of a manual overclock, but I am unsure what needs to be changed in BIOS.
If someone would be kind enough to explain how to change my turbo modes to the following, I'd appreciate it.
    1 Core - 4.6GHz
    2 Core - 4.5GHz
    3 Core - 4.5GHz
    4 Core - 4.5GHz
I saw one of Froggy's posts where he states the following:
    Quote
For PLL, I use 1.82-1.84v's range. I/O 1.07v's. SA 0.965-0.970v's range. The industry recommended maximum for the CPU V. on an everyday machine is not to exceed 1.400v's. Do not go by the Intel maximum, as that is the 'absolute' maximum. Between 1.400v's and 1.52v's, you can expect degradation. Difficult to predict the severity as each Intel CPU is somewhat unique in that regard. CPU temperature, try to keep it around low 70C's or less under full load.
but I don't knwo what half the acronyms mean since I haven't overclocked in so long.
Enable PLL Overvolting (1.82v-1.84v) I understand
    I/O - ???
    SA - ???
CPU V - 1.32v should be way more than enough for my cpu based on what it used to be set to in my P67A-GD65
I know this CPU can handle the speed increase, I just need some assistance getting there since there are about a gazillion more features in this BIOS than there were in my P67A.
One caveat: I do not use Control Center. I have never had any luck whatsoever with that program and it has, in fact, caused me more headaches than it has cured.
I have tools like CPUZ, GPUZ, Core Temp, and Corsair Link for my monitoring needs.

Using the Turbo method, you usually leave all voltages and the cpu multiplier at  "auto".
The Turbo Multiplier setting are in CPU Features
    See examples here:

    Thanks for the quick response!
If I understand your screenshots (I'm at work not in front of my gaming box) I should make the following changes in my BIOS
    Adjust CPU Ratio - Auto
Adjust CPU Ratio in OS – Disabled
    Internal PLL Overvoltage – Enabled
    EIST – Enabled
    Turbo Boost – Enabled
    Enhanced Turbo – Disabled
OC Genie Function – By Onboard Button
    My OC Genie – Disabled
DRAM Frequency – DDR3 2133MHz (Note to Self: Test your RAM to see if it will run at [email protected]) (It's Kingston HyperX Beast 2400MHz spec'd to run at 1.6 but it's at 1.55v in BIOS at 1333MHz. I could leave it there if needed)
    Extreme Memory Profile – Disabled
    DRAM Timing – Link
VDroop – +75% or +87.5%  or +100% (Depending on my particular CPU)
    Digital Compensation Level – High
CPU Core OCP Expander – Default
    Core Switching Freq – Auto
    CPU Core Voltage – auto
    CPU I/O Voltage – Auto
DRAM Voltage – 1.55-1.57 at MOST)
System Agent Voltage (Found what SA means! lol) – Auto
    Active Processor Cores – All
    Limit CPUID Max – Disabled
    Execute Disable Bit – Enabled
    Power Technology - Custom
C1E Support – Enabled (Disabled on XMAD’s screenshot by accident)
    Overspeed Protection – Disabled
    Intel C State – Enabled
Package C State Limit – Auto
    LDPM – 255
    LDM – 2
    SDPM – 255
    PPCL – 1024
    SPCL – 32
    PPTPL – 0
    SPTPL – 0
1 through 4 core Ratio Limit – 46,45,45,45 (I think these settings are for the Turbo's max setting so set to 4.5GHz for 4 cores, and 4.6 for one)

Hello, I want to overclock my PC for better Graphics while playing games ..
Firstly I need to know is it safe to overclock a PC ?
what are the things involved in it ??
Kindly provide me a guide how to over clock my board
It is 'extremely' important to follow xmad's request for more information about your complete system.
Question #1, yes, it is 'reasonably' safe if guidelines & adherence to voltage and temperature limits are heeded.
Question #2, of primary importance is having hardware that 'is' OC'able to begin with. In addition to the hardware, it is normally just a matter of setting up the correct settings in the UEFI/BIOS. You will need some utilities such as CPU-Z, H/W Monitor, etc. Also, a digital multimeter is highly recommended.
Question #3, there are some 'basics', but every system is different and reacts different to tweaks and adjustments. When we know your components, it will make it easier to make suggestions and recommendations.

  • GX660 laptop Bluetooth and Turbo Mode issues

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded to Windows 8 64 bit and have got everything working perfectly except for my bluetooth facilities. Have tried using the latest Win 7 ones from the MSI website but no joy. They install, and it seems in Services that bluetooth is running but am unable to transfer any files to or from the laptop and it doesn't broadcast that a bluetooth signal is available when I try and pair it with my mobile phone.
The other issue I have is the facilites such as Turbo Mode don't work. When the lightup keys are pressed nothing happens. Have tried installing the System Control drivers from the MSI website for Win 7 but no joy again.
Would be grateful to any solution to these issues as I have in the meantime had to revert back to Win 7

Your notebook is not verified to be upgradeable with Win8 by MSI (http://event.msi.com/2012/windows8/index.html). Therefor MSI doesn't provide drivers or any Win 8 support for that model.
For Bluetooth it misses a Radio switch driver which is crucial for Bluetooth to work in Win8 while the rest of your problems are related to a lacking SCM version for Win8 and your notebook model.

  • Qosmio X500 Canadian version. Turbo mode how do you set it up?

I've had the Qosmio X500 (Canadian version) and have yet to figure out how to set the CPU to turbo mode which has been touted by Toshiba to be avail. I have installed an run a few games but a game such as Assassin's Creed tells me it has issues as the processor it sees runs at 1.6 vice the 1.9 required.
Any ideas guys I think it's very similar to the American X505 but no lighted keyboard nor the SSD primary hard drive.
    Thanks

Also, If you're running it on the high performance power setting, try it on Balanced instead. This laptop should be powerful enough to run your game on balanced, and balanced won't heat up the cpu as much, making it more likely to be at a proper temperature to turbo boost.

  • MSI GT780DX P1 "TURBO MODE" automatically off in few seconds

Hello ! In my MSI GT780DX  (I5, gtx570m  1.5GB, Windows 7 x64 pro, charger ON)  P1 "TURBO MODE" automatically off in few seconds (aimation from s-bar)
Everything work fine, until install the new driver for GPU from nvidia, v320, and give me problem whit P1 mode.
I'm uninstall the driver, and instal old, no fix, I'm uninstall all driver MSI (nvidia overclok tool, s-bar, afterburner, nvidia drivers) ,and install it again, no fix problem, still P1 "TURBO MODE" automatically off in few seconds ;/
    curiosity:
For more GPU clok (700MHZ)and memory (1700), I run "nvidia inspector",only open "show overcloking",and "Driver profile" , nothing change ! Then run afterburner , and set gpu clok to 700Mhz, memory clok 1700, aply, and in game it's run gpu to 700Mhz, no pressing P1 button !!
But I want to press only P1 button for more gpu clok...
    sorry for bad english.

For anyone that needs help setting the overclock tool to run at startup, just set a task to run the tool with admin priveleges at user login with the task scheduler.
Can confirm this works for me, I can now use my turbo button and change brightness without SCM crashing on the latest Nvidia drivers (331.65).

I don't know where the chipset has been manufactured (or who actually made the chips), but there's no reason to believe it'd be overclocked (rather, the usual thing to do to preserve battery life is to run the processors at lower clock speeds than what the hardware is really capable of).
In addition, there's no practical way to replace individual chips on phone circuit boards. You'd need the whole board replaced.

  • Over clocking an amd 2100XP

I’m just wondering if anyone out there has had any success over clocking an amd 2100XP tbird?

I have built a few systems with the Tbred B core, and all will overclock to 2.2ghz at default Voltage. The MSI board is the best, and make sure you get a TBred B revision of the 2100. Last time I checked http://www.newegg.com had it for $87 or so. Pretty dirt cheap if you ask me, considering you are basically buying a 2700+ or 2800+ for ~$90. I am running mine at [email protected] (166x13) and it's rock solid now. Like the previous post stated, make sure you have good memory, I'd recommend Muskin. Your PSU has to be good as well...and a good heat sink/fan combo. the SLK800 I think is pretty good.

    over clocking using core center
ok rather a noob at this and thought I would try a safer way of overclocking.
The program ticked away up til 300mhz on the left hand monitor at which point I turned it off as a 50% increase in the FSB seemed rather too much.
Has anyne used this prog or can point me to any documents about what it does!

    thanks for the info.
