Over the air backup solution?

I'm desperately seeking an over the air backup solution for my 2009 edition macbook air. I've tried carbonite, mozy and dropbox, but all of them bring the computer to a crawl when backing up significant amounts of data -- so really they're unusable as a complete backup solution.
1. What do you use/recommend?
2. With the 2010 edition and faster CPUs, would I no longer have such problems? (if you have experience with this, not theoretically)
Thanks!!

Hi Rob1977,
I use Dropbox (a lot) and I'm a big fan of their product and it's integration with OS X. However, I've never really seen their service model targeted at the online backup crowd. Personally I think Dropbox is more of a cloud storage for regularly accessed files then a cloud backup solution but I suppose everyone's usage of the product is different.
I had never heard of Mozy, but I decided to try and signup for their free 2GB trial account. So far I'm very unimpressed, the speed of upload/download is about 40% slower than Dropbox (same location, same machine). Although, I did not notice any slow down on my 13" MBP or my 11" MBA when using Dropbox I definitely saw it with Mozy (as compared to Dropbox).

Does Apple have a why to backup iphones over the air to a internal server? or is icloud the only options???

If you've been WiFi synching your phone to iTunes on your computer, you can also backup your phone wirelessly.  On the summary page, click the "Backup Now" button .

No WIFI after iOS 5.0.1 over-the-air update on original iPad. I have reset the network settings,  power off the iPad, trying static IP and nothing, it's unable to join my wifi network. anybody with the same issue?

    Great!  Thanks, this works.
I have an old Linksys WRT54G in it I can select WPA Personal and AES as algorithm--it works for me (though maybe just changing to anything works!  but I will not try anything different since I have spent already so much time with this problem.)  Again, thanks for the solution Juan.

I don't have Mobile Me, but my ipad and iphone notes used to sync over the air and they no longer do.
    Does anyone have any answers?

In iCal's preferences, you can configure whether and when events get purged.
As for recovering old, deleted events... I don't suppose you have backups?...

  • Birthdays again/Exchange sync over-the-air

    Hi all,
I have a problem while I sync my contacts with Exchange 2007 over-the-air. Some contacts on iPhone have incorrect birthdays (they appear off by one day). The solution described here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2456 doesn't work for me because I have no ability to reset sync history when I use over-the-air sync.
If I try to sync my contacts with iTunes (over-the-air sync turned off in iPhone settings), everything is ok - birthdays have correct dates.
Is there solution to get in iPhone contacts with correct birthdays when sync with Exchange over-the-air?
    Thanks!

Roy, no, I have no indication that Notes are being sync'd over the air, by Mobile Me. That is why I made that comment, that Apple needs to clean up the Notes sync interface so that it is consistent with the other MobileMe sync aware apps. To me It appears that the Notes sync was just added in, so my guess is iOS 4.0.1 will clear that up a bit.
Are you sure you have Push turned on? Without that, OTA syncing will not occur. Also check in your Mac's System Preferences under the Mobile Me pane to make sure Notes are being sync'd. Not sure that affects the iPhone, but it affects the syncing in the cloud, so that could be an issue too.
I can suggest one other thing to try.
That is to do a hard reset of your iPhone (home button/and power button) This will clear your caches. Don't know if it dumps the Notes database, but it may.
Then immediately upon restart, do the Notes replacing procedure that I outlined. The key is to remove the confusion. As I said, once I cleaned up all my Notes and consolidated them in one place, then reset them all on the iPhone, everything worked as expected.
I am a heavy Notes user, and use them extensively on the road on the iPhone and in my office on my Mac and at home on my MBPro and another iMac, so I expect them to be all the same and always updated. This procedure worked for me.

  • Over-the-air(how turn off?)

    hi,
i was trying to sync my bookmarks from safari with my iphone using iTunes
but is not possible because over-the air in on.where and how i turn off over the air?
    thx

If the OP voices a Wi-Fi issue then how can Wi-Fi not be relevant to THEIR solution?
Read his post again, The OP never said anything about WiFi, which has nothing to do with this. "Over the air" can mean cell network, Bluetooth or WiFi.
Apparently, he has MobileMe syncing for Safari bookmarks, and when this is active iTunes Safari syncing is disabled. MobileMe push syncing isn't WiFi specific - it's also carried by the cell data network.

    That is absolutely not true.
An NSU update for the N96 at least is a 125MB download or thereabouts.
V10.043 to V11.018 was about 3.5MB via FOTA, V11.018 to V11.101 was no more than a few hundred KB, and V11.101 to V12.043 was once again about 3MB.
FOTA is far more reliable than NSU since there are fewer machines involved (the phone grabs the update directly from Nokia instead of having it buffered by a machine, a machine running one of the most notoriously unreliable operating systems ever created) and therefore fewer points of potential failure.
As psychomania pointed out, there are cases of people bricking their phones with NSU daily on these forums. To date, we have see one case of a failed FOTA update. Draw your own conclusions.
Like our resident psycho, I hope that FOTA becomes far more widespread in the future. It is much more reliable and quick.

although i tend to agree that FOTA should be safer, but i think we might be jumping to conclusions to early, as there are about 91 phones supported by NSU, most of which are updated by the conventional PC way, whereas there are very few that uses FOTA (i knew of 2 handsets), hence the relatively lower incidence of failures...

If the update is on the Nokia servers that does not mean it is ready and available to end users for the OTA update. While a Nokia Care Point could flash it for you that will also wipe the device.

  • Is it just me, or do most of the upgrade problems (not bugs) happen when updating "over-the-air", rather than using a computer and iTunes ?

I have used iTunes on a computer every time, and so far have had no problems like the ones we are seeing here.
Just want to reiterate - I am not talking about iOS 7 bugs - but just performing the update(s)

Absolutely!!  I've had no problems upgrading the iPhone using iTunes.  It also allows me to backup the iPhone's settings so I can recover them if something goes wrong in the upgrade process.  I have always upgraded using iTunes and would not do it any other way.
My wife upgraded to iOS6 directly to her iPhone 4S and lost her contacts and other information, and had problems with wifi access, etc.  At the next iOS change, I did the upgrade on her phone through iTunes and had no problem.
Even MacWorld reports that upgrading "over the air" directly on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch can create instability in the OS.

Doing a restore will more than likely resolve the problem. Plug the phone into iTunes, select your phone under DEVICES, and press Restore. This will restore your phone to factory settings. Now, after the restore is complete, you have two options:
    1) Restore from Backup
This will let you restore all of the content you had on your phone but may also restore the other person's notes and their ability to sync notes to your phone.
    2) Set Up as New iPhone
Your data will not be restored, but you can always sync content back later as long as it is in iTunes. On the positive side, this would positively remove any setting that would allow someone else's notes to appear on your phone.
You will be presented with these two options after the restore. I recommend restoring from a backup first so you won't lose your data, but if it doesn't solve the problem, proceed to restore as a new phone.

  • Update Over The Air - Nokia 6131

If you go to http://www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate and try to update over the air, it gives you the instruction to do the next:
To Backup to your Memory card:
1.select Tools > Memory fron the main menu
2.select Options > Backup phone mem.
Well, i don't have those options in my Nokia 6131...

  • Block Personal Email Access Over The Air

Thanks in advance for any replies.
Issue: Company are going to deploy 100 iPad 2 to field based staff. We are going to use an MDM solution to deploy configuration profiles to lock down the devices for a corporate environment over the air.
One issue we can not resolve at the moment is blocking staff adding a new personal e-mail account (gmail, hotmail etc...) by the way of an over the air provisioning profile.
If we deploy the MDM solution to the device & set-up Exchange e-mail access after this is complete we can turn off adding a new e-mail account via the restrictions option but this has to be completed manually!
Does anyone know a way of doing the above over the air so we do not have to visit each device? Downloaded the latest version of iPhone Config Utility (3.5.0.289) but this option is not available under mail or restrictions to my knowledge.

The MDM solution has a built-in content blocker that can block access to specific URLs so web based e-mail can be blocked via that.
Alternatively we could filter web traffic via our corporate VPN & then us the head office web filtering application to block access to web based email via Safari.

  • Contacts and Caendar won't sync - how to turn off "over the air" syncing?

I have an 2nd gen 8GB Touch, a Macbook and use iTunes 8.0.1. I do not have Wi-Fi at home. I also have a dot-Mac (or Mobile Me, I guess) account.
When I first got the Touch, I opted in the iTunes Info section to sync both calendar and contacts, and everything came over fine. However, all of that somehow disappeared, and no amount of re-syncing will help. Now, my Info tab indicates that my contacts and calendars are being synced with my iPod over the air - I do not have the option of checking any boxes there. I have tried every permutation of settings in the iPod, but this doesn't change anything. I also cannot find any helpful help screens anywhere (including on this forum, where I have already searched).
Could someone please advise me how I can regain the checkboxes so my contacts and calendar information syncs when I connect to the Macbook and use iTunes to sync everything else (photos, music and movies all work fine).
    TIA
    BobF

This sounds like a MobileMe problem; or, rather, the solution will be found there. Try this page:

I updated my iPad OTA in my office at work and lost nothing at all. However, I did backup and sync with iTunes in the morning at home, in case something went bad.
What you should do anytime that you update the device is to transfer purchases from the iPad into iTunes - File>Transfer Purchases - and you should backup the iPad as well. When you update the update the device, if something goes wrong, you can restore from the backup.
However, iTunes should ask if you want to backup before you update, but just in case create the backup yourself before you update. The backup contains your app data and settings - along with other items - so make sure you backup first.
If you have any other important files, you may want to transfer them to your computer as well, prior to the update.
    Transfer purchases.
