Overactive ALT key (unintentional keyboard shortcuts)

I have a Pavilion dv7 with Windows 7 64.
The problem is that they keyoboard will intermittently jump into "menu shortcut" mode.
In other words, I will type along and the next moment the "I" will jump to "Insert" and so on. It happens in all applcations, for instance, I just hit the backspace button in this Google Chrome browser and it jumped 3 pages back before I realised what was going on.
I have downloaded the laterst touchpad driver and the HP utility says that this computer is up to date.
I have also loaded the latest BIOS and have **bleep**ched off all shortcut support within Windows 7.
Please advise what else I can try.
Thanks

Bob and Peter, thanks for your posts. Bob, I had previously come across the article by Sandee Cohen that you referenced. The technique there seems to provide a method to remap InDesign's keyboard shortcuts to allow use of the Alt key for events within ID, but I haven't been able to apply this strategy to custom shortcuts applied to paragraph, character and object styles. And the designer who developed our shortcuts very systematically used all of the available combinations (shift, option/alt, control, alone or in combos, and 0 through 9 on the numeric keypad). They had a great system on the Mac that unfortunately has now fallen apart on the PC.
I'll keep digging and definitely welcome more advice. Thanks again!

  • Where can I find the Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E in the keyboard shortcuts panel?

I accidentally mapped my Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E (merge all visible to a new layer) shortcut to another one, and I can't find where the original function was in the Keyboard Shortcuts panel. Does anyone know where I can find the original function so I can remap it? I have a lot of custom shortcuts and I don't want to switch back to Photoshop defaults.

I suspect the shift-key is just a qualifier and the original shortcut should be under Panel Menus > Layers > Merge Visible

  • Control key combinations in Keyboard Shortcuts

I want to use the Control key plus letters, such as Ctrl-H, for shortcuts within Keyboard Shortcuts. I appreciate that such combinations are normally used by EMACS but I fail to understand what's happening in the Keyboard Shortcuts section of my Keyboard panel in System Prferences. It allows me to enter the Control key plus letter as my required shortcut but the shortcut never works. Any other shortcut, using other modifiers, even in combination with the Control key works fine. Now I have other utilities, such as FastScripts and Spark that allow me to use such combinations, so why can't they be used in Keyboard Shortcuts?
If anyone else has this problem and knows of an answer it would be much appreciated!

Well, the Keyboard Shortcuts panel doesn’t show the warning triangle as shown for other conflicts. Shouldn't the panel reject such key combinations if they're not available? Instead it shows them as being OK. I would have thought it reasonable to use such key combinations in non-EMACS applications anyway. Also, why is it that other utilities make it possible to use them? Most odd. I'll just have to use other methods I suppose!

  • Change ctrl+alt+s System Information keyboard shortcut

    Hello,
since last HP update, there is this new keyboard shortcut CTRL+ALT+S that opens the System Information panel. That shortcut is also used by other applications i.e. Adobe Photoshop. How can i change/disable that shortcut?
    My OS is windows 8.1.
I've already unsuccessfully tried the steps described in the document http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=it&lc=it&dlc=it&docname=c00761879. It does not work for me because I have windows 8.1 and there is no such program as "HP Help and Tools".
    Thanks

Use Windows System Restore to return to a checkpoint made on the date of the update. Each checkpoint will list details on the update that it was made for.
Use system restore, not Refresh or reset.

  • Alt keys in Xorg keyboard

I have a following problem, or a wish I'd say:
I would like to have both alt keys working in xorg (ratpoison WM) as they do in console.
What I would like to accomplish is to have my Alt keys working in xorg in ncurses based program where I need to change tabs with alt+numbers. Unfortunatelly, the only thing I get after pressing alt+numbers is: a plus-minus sign, superscritp numbers etc.
Any help wolud be appreciated. It seemed to be an easy task - disable some alt shortcuts, but I am completely stuck with it.
    Thank you in advance.

Not sure if I completely understand this - both Alt keys work for your curses program in console but not X.Org? If this is the case I think maybe you need to "reassign" your Alt keys if X.Org is somehow changing them. Your keycodes may vary.. try using 'xev' to identify them if so.
    xmodmap -e "keycode 64 = Alt_L"
    xmodmap -e "keycode 108 = Alt_R"
    xmodmap -e "clear Mod1"
    xmodmap -e "add Mod1 = Alt_L Alt_R"
Or maybe just assign Alt_R as Alt_L if that's the only one recognized during X. Just some ideas, anyway. Also make sure your .ratpoisonrc doesn't have the Alt+number keys mapped to something else, although I don't think this is a problem if you're getting output in your curses program.

  • PS CC keyboard shortcut Opt+Cmd+Z not working (osx mavericks)

Since I deleted the Adobe and Photoshop preferences from my library folder, I'm facing a weird issue:
Any keyboard shortcut that involves the Option/Alt key on my keyboard is simply not recognized by Photoshop. I have confirmed that my physical key is not broken and works in all other applications, but when I use it in Photoshop, nothing happens. When I go to the keyboard shortcuts menu and try to modify 'Step Backward' (because I really want this key do be like the default), I cannot put in the Option key. I can use different combinations for the command, just not this one key.
Does anybody have an idea what is going on and how to fix this? I have deleted the preference files once more and rebooted, but no change. I haven't installed any other software or drivers in a long time, so I doubt it's because of anything interfering with Photoshop. I also checked for double assigned shortcuts in the system, but as I said, PS simply won't recognize that the Alt key is pressed.

Have you tried a different keyboard to exclude a defective Option key?
How did you delete the Photoshop preferences.  If you did that manually (very bad idea) try it the proper way:
Preference filenames and locations in Photoshop CC
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"

  • Re: Using Alt-Key combinations

Unfortunately this happens not only with Alt-Key combinations. It also
happens with the ordinary F10 key: Windows activates the menu and then
Forte gets the FKey event. The problem is that now the user has to press
ESC to deactivate the menu and continue normal processing. There is no
    known cure yet...

for push buttons using the SetAsFunctionKey method and FunctionKeyPress
event. When we press the Alt-Key combination, it appears that Windows is
trying to find a menu item with that shortcut combination or a button with
that combination. Since Windows can not find the proper element with that
combination, it beeps at us. At that point, Forte picks up the key
combination and will post the FunctionKeyPress event.
The application will work fine, but the beep is not only annoying, but also
is misleading for those individuals using accessibility tools like screen
readers who rely upon audible queues for detecting errors in keyboarding.
Has anyone found any viable solutions to this problem?--

Ah ha - okay. So you're using escapes too, rather than meta8 (this is the default, so makes sense). Yeah, I got it working doing that, but had to adapt my .vimrc to get it to acknowledge the ^[ as "alt". Didn't you, or did a simple map of e.g. <A-a> suffice?
Are you running it in screen/tmux btw? and what is your TERM set to?
Yeah, I thought that too and though I do run it in tmux usually, I've been testing it both with and without (TERM is set to screen-256color BTW) and it made no difference. Still, unless I specifically map the ^[ to alt in vim, it doesn't work. With meta8 it works so long as the locale is not UTF-8.
Guess I've got a workaround for now, but it would be nice if meta8 and utf-8 worked nicely together.
    Thanks.
Could you please show how your vimrc looks like? I have the same problem and I'm interested in your workaround.

  • How to trap ALT key?

    Hello guys!
After searching and investigating quite a lot, I am posting
my problem here in hope that God bless me with success
I am working on an eLearning course whereas client requied
the course to be keyboard accessible. He wants all the shortcuts
    with Alt key combination.
I can trap the Alt key with the use of enterframe but that
makes my course processing heavy so I tried to trap Alt key with
keylistener event but unfortunately keylistener event doesn't
    listen Alt key
Could anyone suggest me how to trap Alt key without using
    enterframe or interval?
Thanks a lot for sparing your precisious time.

I believe Alt-Space is a keyboard shortcut in Windows XP to bring up the window menu for any app...so it's not just a LabVIEW thing. Further, it appears that Windows grabs that key combination before a LabVIEW event structure can get it.  I don't know any way around this behavior, since Windows appears to be taking matters into its own hands with certain key combinations.  My advice would be to use a different key combination for your app.

  • Keyboard shortcuts for applying styles in Pages 5.0

In Pages '09, you could set a function key as a keyboard shortcut to apply either paragraph or character styles. But I don't see this in Pages 5.0. Have they taken it away or is there another way to do this?
This feature was key for me—it saved me a lot of mouse clicks and drags and made formatting text very easy and consistent. I'll miss it if it's gone, and may even have to keep using the old version of Pages for this reason.

Gone along with 90 other features.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder. Use that and review/rate Pages 5 in the App Store and delete or archive it to prevent it from opening .pages files accidentally.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 Keyboard Shortcuts Help

Hey! Not sure if I am posting this in the right location, but anyway...
I use a Wacom Cintiq with my Photoshop Cs5.1 package and have had some troubles when it comes to a particular keyboard shortcut.
The scroll wheel on the Cintiq when it's set to brush size is using the default "[ and ]" which scales up and down the brush size in Photoshop and is how I want it to be. Though when I am painting I use the eyedropper tool a lot which is the "Option" key. I don't really want to change this as I am used to it being in that location and am not sure where else to set it on my keyboard.
So the problem here is that when I am using the scroll wheel for brush size I am sometimes holding down the Option key so the keyboard shortcut "Opt + [ and ]" is being used which cycles through the different layers I have made. This can be very annoying when I am happily painting my illustration and suddenly I'm on a different layer without realising it.
So how do you remove this keyboard shortcut "Opt + [ and ]" as I don't want it to cycle through the layers with this, I'd rather it be deleted. I have looked through keyboard shortcuts and can't find anything, I've also checked online and cannot locate a way of disabling it, thanks!
P.S You may be thinking why don't I just change the keyboard shortcut to the brush size scroll wheel. Well I have tried that and it seems to be a little bit laggy if it doesn't use "[ and ]".

    nobody know?

  • Keyboard shortcuts not working in Illustrator CC for Mac

I'm having a lot of problems using keyboard shortcuts in Illustrator CC for Mac. They'll will work intermittently. No keyboard issues anywhere else. Is this a bug, or something I can remedy on my end?

I am having the exact same problem and it is really infuriating at times... I just switched from CS6 where I encountered no such problems.
It seems that it usually happens when I switch to Finder or another application and back (altough it may only be Finder). The Illustrator window is still active because I can see Illustrator reacting when I press only CMD or ALT. However all keyboard shortcuts just stop working, for instance CMD+S, or V or any other toolbar shortcuts. To fix it I have to do a mouse click on a tool or menu command or something, and the shortcuts are back for a while...
I am also running Illustrator v.17.0.0 and OS X 10.8.4 on a macbook Pro connected to a Thunderbolt Display and bluetooth mouse/keyboard.
I sure hope this is picked up by Adobe soon, it is really messing with my workflow!

  • Keyboard shortcuts failing to work on windows partition

    Hey all,
I have been having this problem for a while and I couldn't find any information on the fix so I turned to these forums for a possible solution (Also hello all). My problem seems like it could be simply fixed by changing some system property but I could find no such info online, but enough with the idle chit chat, let's talk business. My problem is the keyboard shortcuts (such as control option delete and ctrl+click) are simply not working. The control option delete button gets registered as 3 different keys. One keyboard shortcut does work and that is shift f10, but I desire the more precise right clicking method of control click. I am currently using the Macbook version that was first introduced with the intel dual core 2 processor and NVIDIA graphics card (I don't know the actual name of it so maybe some one could tell me?). The windows operating system which I installed with bootcamp is Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise R2 and I don't know if this helps are all but my mac partition runs OS-X Leopard fully updated. If I am being dumb then a couple of buzz words is all I need to get me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!

Also, the eject button doesn't work for the CD/DVD drive.

  • ALT key remapping for slickedit

I am looking for a way to pass the ALT key through X11 on Mac OSX 10.6 to slickedit.  Slickedit uses ALT-<key> for several nice shortcuts.
    Kyle

    Me, too...
There are several suggestions on the web on how to get the Alt key to pass through to X11 applications, but I haven't found anything that works with SlickEdit.
    Thanks,

  • Sticky ALT key on Curve 8520

    Hi
I've been having some issues recently with a buggy ALT key on my keyboard, keeps on self-activating. Think this has something to do with my cellphone pouch having been such a snug fit. I have taken out the key completely, but somehow it STILL keeps on activating the ALT function while busy typing. I have noticed I can get along just fine without it, so is there a way to completely disable the ALT function on the phone short from blowing out the circuit board?

    Sorry, no there is not.
