Overclock core i5 2500K with MSI Z68A-GD65 B3 [Help]

Hello
I have updated the bios of my motherboard Z68A-GD65 B3 with the lastest version
the OC menu has new options and my OC don't go above 4.2Ghz
there are some screenshot
Spread Spectrum=Disable
CPU PLL Voltage=1.65
Execute Disable bit=Enable
Intel virtualization tech=Enable
Power technology= Energy Efficient
C1E support= enable
Overspeed protection=disable
core ratios=45
what would you recomend me set in Long duration power, maintained, short duration etc?
because the OC only goes to 4.2Ghz.

With the CPU Core Ratios in CPU Features back to Auto or their default, set the Adjust CPU Ratio to 43X at first just to test it for POST completion, OS loading and stability. Turbo and Enhanced Turbo could be set to disabled. Internal PLL to enabled. Try VDroop in Auto or it's other available setting. CPU PLL to 1.82v's - 1.84v's, EuP 2013, Spread Spectrum, and Overspeed Protection keep disabled. Reset the CPU Features power and duration limits back up to the previous settings as discussed.
As you said, there is a problem with the BIOS version. I tried to overclock with CPU Ratio method, unsatisfactorily. setting the CPU Ratio at 40 the system fail.
I recently tried with OC Genie Button, but the Frecuency doesn't go above 3.7Ghz, but the CPU Ratio Limit is set in 42.
you can see the picture.

  • OC 2500K on MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3)

I get BSODs when the voltage is set to 1.32, now its set to 1.35. No BSODs and CPUz reports 1.344v.
    2500K @ 4.5GHz.

err i forgot to give a link to full image, sorry: Full Image
And i wasn't talking about cpu capability, my post was for the people like aayman or nelly, to clarify that there are no two pieces of hardware identical, so my mobo could reach more or less overclock with the same CPU than theirs.
And another pointing....when a company like asus or gigabyte ( They are in a continuous battle ) send a review mobo to some internet reviewers, like TechPowerUP and some others, they first get assured they mobo will perform at its best, and this mobo may be is one within a hundred, so may be you are trying to compare apples with bannanas
Any way....i have had my rig at stock speed during 5 months, and now i have it at 4.6 it is 1.3Ghz more than yesterday...and i do not notice perceptible gain in this...so...what is the point on this...
Some times i read a review in a known web, and their conclusion is: the card XXX is much better than yyy becouse it is 20% faster!!!. Ok, but they leave the important things out of the ecuation. Money and real performance difference.
20% faster means: xxx does 50fps and yyy does 60fps on the same rig. and how much costs xxx and how much yyy? ahh this is the quid... do you really need to spend more than 20% the price of XXX to get yyy performance? OF COURSE NOT, but it is not taken in consideration....and is very common that yyy costs more than 50% than xxx, but...market is market and publicity is all today.
And in this example, a 20% in difference, is quite a bit, but what happens when the difference is more or less 3 fps....well i have seen renamed sites telling the world the mobo A outperforms mobo B when the diference is only 3 fps with the same setup...
I think, the two most important things on this are, how much will cost my rig (performance /price ) and how much will it consume ( remember, watts are money today...) so if my rig costs 1000$ and it consumes 300Watt a day and the price is 1$ per watt it would be 110500$ a year. But if my rig costs 2500$ but it consumes only 150watts, at a year it would be 57250$.
    The numbers speaks by themselves
My purpose with this is to set a little bit of objectivity in all of this. I do not like other people to think instead of me, so i try to get my own conclusions when i read a review, a post in a forum or whatever, I know that is not common and is a heavy effort to do this, but i think is the best way to get the best for the money.
if you read this complete thanks for your patience and time

It also occurs when i start up some applications and the hard drive is busy.
    I tried enable/disable eup2013 and c1 and intel c1 etc... nothing works
With or without overclock it doesn matter.
Does anybody have a suggestion how to fix this problem? Thank you! Please help;-)

Sounds like a bad earth somewhere.
Is that a wired mouse ? Have you tried another mouse and keyboard ?
Can you test the board outside the case, on a non-conducting surface. No device used for the test to be mounted in the case.

    around 77 to 79 celcius.
That is what you need to expect with a stock cooling. Around 80°C are not in the real critical temperature range (red range: probably 85-95°C).  The CPU has its own thermal management and will shut down itself automatically as soon as it reaches its thermal shutdown point (95-105°C).  As soon as the core temperatures get close to the shutdown point, the CPU will automatically clock itself down and lower the Core Voltage. In case that is not enough to cool itself down, it will shut off.
So basically, you will know when the temperatures get critical as soon as the CPU decides to clock itself down under full load.
However, allowing to run the CPU @80°C on a regular basis, is probably not something you want to do.  Please consider a cooling solution more appropiate to your overclocking ambitions.

If the system was working, why did you update the BIOS ?
If the previous BIOS worked for you, then flash back to that BIOS. Use the forum flasher >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
Once you have flashed the BIOS do a CMOS clear. >>Clear CMOS Guide<<

    Hello all,
I purchased a MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3) and when I started up it goes into a boot loop. I can't see anything on the screen.
    Setup
    - Motherboard MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3)
    - Intel Core i3 Ivy Bridge 3220 3.30GHz 3MB Cache LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core Processor

    - COOLER MASTER Elite Power 400W OEM 20+4 pin & 4+4 pin ATX 12V V2.31 12cm fan Eco-friendly Reliability Quiet Noise Filter 70% efficiency
BIOS stated in the green labels below the "MSI" Heatsink is: E7681 IMSN10.
I tried another PSU and had the same issue.
Anybody can help me? Thank you very much for your time!

Your mainboard does not support an Ivy Bridge processor with the current bios that's why it doesn't come up. It needs a P series bios (7681vP1 and above).
There is no other way than to use any Sandy Bridge cpu to flash bios to the latest to make your cpu work: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/Z68A-GD65--G3-.html#/?div=BIOS
For flashing >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
If you can't get a hand at a Sandy you need to let any PC shop or MSI do it for you (that's not for free of course). >>How to contact MSI.<<

    hyperx predator 8gb 2x4gb rams
    asus gtx660 pci-e 2gb
    2tb seagate

and the problem, i installed up the components today and got it working first without detecting SATA 2tb seagate. Then i switched to all sata ports and the last one 8 and 7 worked fine for seagate and Asus DVD. But now the problem is that it lets me in marvell bios when it shows up the harddisk and dvd, but not in the "primary bios". When it shows the first data, harddisk and dvd, it goes straight to "Warning BIOS ME file not found install on the usb" etc... I dont know what to do because i read all the forums in the internet, wasted 6 hours in investigating internet and found nothing. Have tried the flash utilitys, USB flasher utility found in forums and all... Reseting BIOS didnt help.

Also for the flashing, i dont have OS on that system, what we are talking about. And if i download those BIOS from the MSI site, its only EXE? I cant run exe from USB flash when starting PC?

Ok what ive done now is fit my videocard in the second blue 16x slot and put my soundcard in the pcie 3 and it still says its running at 8x will remove the soundcard and report back.
Edit:videocard is back in pcie2 running 16x but now i cant fit the soundcard in pcie1 cpu heatsink gets in the way,pcie3 is covered by the videocard as it takes up 2 slots amd pci34 the videocards fans come into contact when the soundcard is installed there.
After spending £140 on a pcie soundcard i would need to get a pci one and thats not going to happen so ill have to run @8x
Panic over all running ok now installed the soundcard in pcie3 and moved the bracket over just enough to miss the fans on the videocard.

  • MSI GeForce GTX 970 with MSI Z68A-GD55 (G3) motherboard

    Hi!
I have seen a similar issue here that was resolved with the help of this forum. (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=251322.0). I still want to ask my questons however, since I have a slightly different situation.
I recently bought a new Graphics card, a MSI GTX 970, to replace my older EVGA GTX 570. After installing it, the time it takes to startup the computer is quite a bit longer. The very begninning of the startup process is the part that takes longer, I see a black screen and "B2" in the lower right hand corner, with the older GPU this was seen for a few seconds but now it stays that way for about a minute. After that I see some random colors in stead of the MSI logo and then the regular "Starting Windows" image appears, from there the startup is as fast as before.
When the computer has started it seems to work perfectly, and the new graphics card is great, everything on "ultra" in games etc.
I guess the way to resolve this issue is to update BIOS. I am a bit afraid of this however, of the risk of destroying something.
What would be your suggestions? Is it better to update bios or to leave it as it is, since the computer works? Are the any risks with keeping this bios version, that seems to have some issue with the graphics card?
Any help would be greately appreciated!
    /Johan

    Ok, thanks for the advice.
I have started looking at the instructions and have downloaded the installer and the bios file. It seems Norton Internet Security has some problem with the installer.  When I start the installer it reaches the point when it shows the current bios version, after that it is interupted by Norton. The reason that Norton gives is that it has found something called "Suspicious.Cloud.9.B" in the file b4.bks. How should I react to this?

  • MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3) 99.8MHz bug, temporary fix to make it 100MHz

With the current available official and beta bios, when disabling spread spectrum, the bus speed does not increase from 99.8MHz to 100MHz, I have messaged MSI support again to look into this with the current 23.4B4 Beta Bios.
Anyway I have found a fix for this, download the latest Control Center v2.2.0036 off the MSI website.
If your CPU Base Frequency is at default in bios 10000 you will see 98.8MHz on CPU-Z so in Control Center change the Base Clock (MHz) to 100.2 MHz and click save.
If your CPU Base Frequency is at 10010 you will see 100.2MHz on CPU-Z so in Control Center change the Base Clock (MHz) to 100MHz and click save.
Either way when you reboot it will always show 100MHz.

Thanks for posting this, and creating the thread, Nelly
I just use the 10010 bclk bios setting, but that band-aid solution doesn't net an even 100.0MHz.
My earlier attempts at contacting support about the 98.8 issue just get the generic "disable spread spectrum" reply. Some of the earlier bios for my previous MSI P67-G43 board gave me the correct 100MHz bus speed for that board, but it also changed to 98.8 with the later bios releases.
But even the "first" "00" bios for the Z68A-GD65 G3 has the 98.8 flaw, as does every single bios that MSI has issued for this board, beta or otherwise, since.

Granted you might get away with it. But the next person that reads this & uses that for everyday may not be so lucky. If games, applications, programs, & whatever else can't be done on what 1.400v's can provide for a decent performance level, the rest is just for show. That 'is not' a low low voltage for a 4.8. One of the test rigs here & a 2600k will do 4.8 on only 1.392v's with 4 cores & 8 threads & never miss a beat. If really serious about everyday maximum performance on 'real' low low voltage, get a 2700k!
Rather impressive voltage for 4.9 with that 2700K
It takes 1.390v. in the bios for my 2500K to do a 12hr. P95 run with no errors, at a much lower 4.6GHz.

  • Core i7 2600k and msi z68a-gd55 b3 acting up and lagging on me

HI, I just built a new gaming rig and for the life of me, I can't figure out why im getting lag and im not impressed coming from a P4 Dual core.. OK here's my setup
Core 17 2600k with CoolMaster Heat Sink
    MSI Z68A-GD55  B3 mobo
    4x4gb DDR3 1600 Corsair Vengeance Ram 9-9-9-24 Total 16Gbs
EVGA GTX 560TI 2Gb Video Card
CORSAIR GAMING SERIES 800 Watt 65a on the 12v Rail
(ONLY USING ONE HDD    GOT 2 HDD'S TO TROUBLESHOOT TO SEE IF ITS THE HDD)
CURRENTLY IN USE FOR MAIN HDD   1 Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm 1TB HDD
1 Western Digital Cavier Black 7200 rpm 2TB HDD
Running on Windows 7 Ultimate x64
So i install the OS and updated all my drivers and for all hardware and updated the BIOS and i got everything stock in the BIOS, No overclocking yet and when im just surfing the web or open up an app, I get this annoying lag and my CPU load and Memeory load will be at 0-5% and it will effing lag... Now i changed out everything thinking it was the problems, down to the Ram 3x's, CPU 1x, Motherboard 3x's (I'm even coming from a different board thinking, that was the the problem. Since i read alot of bad reviews on it.. AN INTEL DP67BG Extreme Series board and come over to the MSI im currently using ) and  my PSU 1x.. and nothing fixed it.. When i run a CPU Stress test it comes back with no ERRORS... Now when i do a Memory Test in the BIOS of the mobo.. It will PASS, no problem.. but if i run it in MEMTEST86 it will FAIL right away.. Then when i test each stick 1 by 1 in BIOS they PASS, NO PROBLEM, But not in Memtest86... So i bought 2 Pairs of 4 new sticks 2 different times.. the same kind of Ram, "which are compatible with this board" and the same thing happens with the lastest MSI BIOS i'll test them with the Memory Tester From BIOS, all 4 sticks and 1 by 1 and then 2 sticks for dual channel in slot 1 nearest CPU and slot 3 and they will PASS but when i try with Memtest86 they FAIL... So i dont think its the Ram cuz 3 different sets are Failing... i  highly doubt it's hardware anymore...  Agree?
Can someone PLEASE HELP ME..! I've been working on this build for 2 straight weeks day and night and i have a bad taste in my mouth over this build. this isnt my first one either and i never, never, ever had theses problems before... i'm about to quit and go back to a p4 dual.. But i don't like to quit and want to feel the power of a i7 2600k that everyone swears by...
please lead me to fixing this... if you can email me for one on one support id compensate you for your time..       [email protected]
BTW i brought it by geek squad and they couldnt figure it out either... but he didnt know his  from his elbow  lol
    Thank you, Marco

ok so the WD is still doing it but not as bad as the seagate was! as for UEFI/BIOS im on 22.8 loaded with default setting except for the dram voltage now, and it was set at 1.4 something i changed it to 1.5 like you said and that help some but i still get lag here and there showing up when moving the mouse with is a microsoft wireless 4000
update so after setting it to 1.52v in bios im noticing  when typing i get freeze up with the cursor and when i open apps the hour glass is appearing at longer then normal even for a p4 chip
any other ideas why is this becoming a nightmare with my hardware can you give me a run down on what everything should be set to in bios.. cuz it looks like default settings are off and im having video card issues but that's for another forum but im thinking they all tie in together..
thank you so much for helping me looks like no one cares to help a fellow builder out.. but when its them in my shoes there quick to beat dowm the door for answers... sorry im just frustated  that over a grand invest and my smartphone feels snappier and responsive then this build.. oh i ya check cpu and the board for mis seated chip and bent pins and correct amount of good paste and heat sink seated and torqued down correctly.. so im not sure anymore  im sooo i just want to
