Overclock my msi r9 290..

the msi r9 290 comes with a stock 977 mhz.. if i OC it, up to how many should I put in order to have work stable... the core clock and memory clock...
or should i just stay with what I have...

Try OC mode.
If you want more:
Set Gaming App to game mode (default clocks).
Run few different benchmarks and record GPU clock it states there, mem clock and temperature.
With Afterburner add +10 to mem clock and re-do the above (benchmarking, temps, clocks). If it dont crash, make note that memclock on +10 didnt crash. Rinse and repeat  until crashes on mem clock, for example +93 didnt crash at all within few benchmarks but 94 did.
Then proceed to GPU clock with same technique: small rise, test for crashes, record clocks and temps, repeat until you find crash point, and go slightly lower until it dont crash.
Mind the temps! If your gpu without OC hits 70C, then max 5C will be safe to go. If hits around 60, then even 15 should be ok ! Keep it under high 70s/low 80s under load

  • MSI R9 290 How to switch between Gaming Modes?

Hi, I just got a MSI R9 290... with Afterburner installed. This card has 3 preset modes that are supposed to be easy to switch between OC Mode 1007Mhz, Gaming 974Mhz, Silent 947Mhz... How do I switch between modes? I just tried to up the MHz in Afterburner and must have done something wrong, becuase I froze everything instalntly and had to reboot. Can someone please advise me how to switch between these modes? Do I have the right software installed, Afterburner or is there another suite specificly for this card? I did not install the card, and sorry I am a noob when it comes to OC. . . Noob to gaming in general, but I am getting some pretty bogus 30FPS on a 2012 game, LA Noire, which shouldnt even be demanding for t

You need the Gaming APP for switching (not Afterburner): http://download.msi.com/uti_exe/gamingApp.zip
Afterburner is for manual overclocking (for advanced users) if not using the modes.

Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the provided archive (131.rar) and put the included file (TV308MH.131) on that stick.
Rename TV308MH.131 to 131.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 131.rom [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

You can inrease gpu clockrate in little steps with >>MSI Afterburner<<. If it gets unstable reduce clockrate by a step until it is stable again. GPU will have better performance as long as it is not bottlenecked by the cpu.
i dont get it..with this u mean that i need to increase gpu or cpu clockrate? how should i set afterburner?

We help if we can. In this case looks like it is a reference card with AMD reference vbios and no MSI one. We have no info about those. Contact MSI about it: >>How to contact MSI.<<
Apologies, I didn't mean to bump the thread - I simply edited the URL to make it more legible.

  • MSI R9 290 Warranty

Hi. I have recently ordered an MSI R9 290 from Ebuyer.com, I have just seen a video online claiming that this card does not have a warranty and I cannot find any information on this topic anywhere.
I just want to know how long the warranty is (if there is one).
    Thanks

  • MSI z87 G45 + MSI R9 290

    Hey all,
New here so please be kind!
    I have recently bought a z87 G45 motherboard and a MSI r9 290.
Both of which should activate the MSI VGA boost.
Have downloaded the drivers for the r9 290 off the msi website, all hunky dory!
Downloaded the MSI gaming app, but when i start up i get the "Please update your VGA drivers"
So this wont allow me to connect the App to the graphics card and i cannot change its profile (OC mode, gaming mode, etc..)
Does anyone have any idea's whats going on?
    Regards,
    Dramz0r

I want to know the same thing. I bought a MSI Z87-G45 Gaming motherboard this month and I can't activate Secure Boot on it because it's still in Setup Mode. I have no idea how to put the motherboard into User Mode and Google doesn't help me much further either. How to activate a key? I have a I5-5670K and GTX 770 by the way.

  • MSI R9 290 Gaming - My PC keeps freezing, blackscreening and then rebooting?:(

So for christmas i got an r9 290 and a new 750w psu.
Before instaalling them i had never had any problems with restarting. However now that i've installed them my PC keeps restarting? what have i doneeee?
    My components are;
    coolermaster 750w 80+ bronze psu
    ASUS m5a78l usb 3 mobo
    AMD fx 6300 cpu
    Msi r9 290 gpu
    three fans
    1 hdd
    2 x 4gb ddr3 ram
What is wrong with my PC? it surely cant be power as coolermaster said i only need about 450w!
When I first installed it this morning it was working fine for a few hours then this all happened! I've made sure all the psu connectors are in properly. Just put my old gtx 650 in and that worked fine i've been able to play games?

Quote from: nhornbrook on 28-December-14, 21:34:18
I don't think it's the mobo bios because if it couldn't handle the 290 surely it wouldn't let me play any games at all? And the device is recognised?
Compatibility issues due to an outdated bios can cause all kinds of problems including the one you have. As this is also an old low-end board better check for an update. When does your pc restart? under load or even in idle? If under load what games did you test?

PC Power & Cooling have a long reputation as being a high-end PSU manufacturer(also been doing it much longer).  If paying the extra £15.00 doesn't mean much, then go for the PC P&C. If the funds are tighter, get the Corsair.  I have the PC P&C Silencer 750.
My guess Henry, is that kmufc77 was linking to either of these Silencer 750 PC P&C PSUs

The Silencer 610 would be more than enough for the 4870, but the 750 will give greater overhead and room for upgrades to more power hungry components or Crossfire.

yes you are right i have ordered the Silencer 750 PC P&C PSUs but a black colour not red i payed the extra over the corsair 750W purely on the repitation of PC P&C PSUs. i hope i have made the right choice as i considering crossfire in the very near future

  • Turbo Overclock with MSI P67-GD55

    Hey,
I'm trying to overclock my 2500K, but I don't want it to run always on the OC Clockrate. Now I read it should be possible to change the Turbo Multiplier so the OC only applies when heavy CPU Power is needed. When I check my BIOS and go to Overclock>CPU Features. There I find: core 0 on 37x,1 on 36x, 35x,34. But the problem is, that I can't change these values. Is this locked at the GD55 Motherboard?
    System specs:
    Latest BIOS version
    Intel Core i5 2500K
    MSI P67-GD55
4 GB RAM Kingston HyperX 1600Mhz
    Samsung Spinpoint F3
    Nvidia GTX275

Please read this article to better understand the turbo boost technology. http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1501/2/
The technology applies max turbo boost to 3,7GHz only on lighter loads, i.e. when one core is being used. As sson as more than one core is under load the turbo boost will reduce until under full load the processor will only run at 3,4GHz. This ensures smooth transitioning between loads and a better performance under loads. There is no reason to disable this.
Furthermore, you will find when your PC idles, the clock frequency will actually go down to 1,6GHz or there abouts to conserve energy and reduce heat generation. Under light loads the Processor may run anywhere in between the minimum and maximum defined Intel clock frequencies.
If you were to increase your CPU multiplier to say 40 and leave everything else alone, then the maximum core clock applied will be 4,0GHz, but the PC will still reduce back to idle when there is no load. Give that a try and observe the behaviour. Download CPU-Z to monitor the voltages and frequencies.
