Overclocking 3500+ with neo2 plat

hey
I have a problem overclocking my system:
Amd 64 3500+ Winchester 90 nm
MSI K8N Neo2 Platnium
Crucial Ballistix pc4000 2x 512 mb(DDR 500)
Zalman CNPS 7000B-C CPU Cooler (I got the backplate out by pushing :D )
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro@XT
NorthQ 4001 400W PowerSupply
When I enter the BIOS -> Cell Menu, and I change the CPU Clock from 200 - 210 (my RAM supports at least 250), and I save the setting it reboots twice and it gives me a text right after it checkes IDE:
The mainboard is in safe mode:
Please set your overclocking settings back to normal!
Why won't it overclock? Isn't there a guide for clocking the K8N neo2? The BIOS cell menu is quite good i think :D
My CPU temp is 35 and system is 25..

So my advice is to leave the bios at normal settings and try using windows tools to find the limits of your overlocking. After reading the FAQ's I decided to use Clockgen to test overclocking settings, happy in the knowldege that when I locked up my  system a reboot would use normal settings.
"Power Up with Insert pressed" works at least on my Neo2. Just figured out it yesterday when I could not the comp boot (see my voltage topic) and had to clear cmos every time with jumper hulabalooo. Then I tryed Insert procedure and it worked and today I have had some boot issues when searching the fastest combination and EVERY time the Insert key has gotten me to safe mode when the comp would otherwise not boot/post to end +++++ / +++++ !
That's great. I still think overclocking via windows is the way to go. I bet you've heard of people achieving POST and then crashing on loading windows? Also we don't need super fast systems all  the time, so  why not overclock only when we need too? Seems like me one way of being "green" without giving up on a western lifestyle!

    Overclocking issues with Neo2 Platinum

    hiya nocturnal
1st in Integrated Peripherals / IDE Function Setup....disable sata1/sata2 dma transfer and enable sata3/sata4 dma transfer...sata 3 is top on left side of board one closest to cpu.
2nd ... Cell Menu / DRAM configuration  is where you set memory timing 1T/2T
3rd...Cell Menu / AGP Frequency ..set it to 67
just My 2 cents but why don't you take Everything back to stock (cpu & vid card) , Do the above and see if it will boot. the biggest problem you have (my opinion) is your memory...you do not state if it is pc3200/400 ...if it is go 200 Max Memclock (step 2, 1st option)
set the CAS  settings to stock..see if you can boot to windows, then and only then go Play   as in see what your sandie will do with that memory..Leave your vid card stock until you get a stable windows enviorment...also if you do shift F2 ..alt F3 it opens up other settings within our bios
I believe you will be upgrading your memory real soon if ya got the o/c bug
    Hope this helps
ps...by the way what type of power supply do you have ?

  • Gainward Geforce 6800 Not working with Neo2 plat

Hey, im starting to get really agravated. do any of you have the some problem? When i boot my computer with the New card (6800) it does a continuous beep and i get no vega signal . Computer runs fine with my older Gefore 4 ti 4600. Any1 have similar setup ?
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+
    Neo2 Plat
psu Asipre 500w (yes i read some other post it has 34amps on 12v rail)
    WD Sata 10k Raptor 36gig
    Gainward Gefore 6800 128meg
1 gig ram Corsair value select (512x2)

I had that problem occur with me before with my older 9800 pro.  Check the molex connector on the video card.  Also check the y-power connector that powerst the video card to the psu... chances are theres a short somewhere.  When I disconnected the Y-power connector from the video card, it was actually burned.  When you get the error, it usually means that there is little or no power feeding your video card.  At least in my situation that was the case.

  • HIS x800xtpe ICE Q II Compatible with Neo2 Plat?

    Hi guys
Im getting the neo2 plat tommorow Im just not sure my gpu will fit cause of the mobo heatsink and im not trusting what the store has to say so anyone that has this board and gpu can you help me or if your 100percent sure.

Hey Mehdi, I've got that MB,and I always hve the case open, just for questions like yours, and I'm looking at the fan and unless any part of the card is below the contacts it will fit. the slot is over 1 inch from the CPU fan and he riser is taller than the chipset fan. you amy not be able to ose theslot next to the AGP though...there are four others...also there are no capacitors that are taller than the riser either. Have fun...

  • Several problems with Neo2 Plat - BSOD, lockups, reboots

    Hi all!
I bought myself a new computer today (or well, I bought the parts and built it), but I'm having problems getting it to run well. I've only had Windows installed for a little over four hours, but have already had lots of problems:
    1) I will get random Blue Screens of Death. The computer will reboot itself so quickly that it's hard to see what error messege it gives, but I thought I was something about IRQ. So I disabled all devices that I don't need, to cut down on possible IRQ conflicts.
    2) The computer will freeze. This happens occasional, and doesn't seem to be related to any particular task. One time it froze will I was running 3DMark 05, the other time when I selected a file on my SATA-disk.
    3) Files are corrupted. A lot of files (again on my SATA drive) seem to be corrupted - I get Cyclic Redundancy Check errors on a lot of them, and I'm pretty sure the files worked in my old computer.
    4) The computer will reboot for no reason. Just as the freezes, this doesn't seem to be related to anything in particular. Suddenly the comp will just reboot.
    This is my hardware setup:
    Mainboard: MSI Neo2-Platinum
    CPU: AMD64 3500+
    CPU Cooler: AMD Boxed Cooler
    RAM: 2 x 512 Corsair 3200 Value Select
    Graphics Card: Gainward GeForce 6800LE
    Sound Card: Sounblaster Audigy2 ZS
    DVD-Drive: Nec 2500A
    PSU: Antec TruePower 480
    Generic Floppy Drive
Does anyone know what might be causing my problems? If it had been only reboots I would've guessed that my PSU is the culprit, but with the corrupted files and BSODs as well I keep thinking it must be the mainboard...

Argh, putting the SATA disk on channel 3 instead of channel 2 didn't help anything at least. Got a BSDO -> Reboot while trying to access files on the S-ATA disk.
I should say that I'm using the latest drivers for everything - graphics card, soundcard, BIOS etc. Also, I seem to be having a problem with Live Update. When I try to use it, it say "The Service Has Not Been Started".
Also, I tried to go into BIOS and change HTT from 5x to x4, but when I tried to do that the BIOS seemed to freeze up. I couldn't escape from the HTT dialouge box (which by the way didn't show any text, only the title), not by pressing Escape. CTRL-ALT-DELETE worked for soft reboot, though.

  • Overclocking problems with neo2

ok, im trying to overclock from 200x10 (stock) to 240x10 but i keep gettin the safe mode warning message >:(
even if i do 210x10 (2100mhz) i still get the warning. i tried using 240x9 which didnt work then i tried lowering HT to 4, this also had no effect.
how can i get this thing to overclock without gettin the warning message?
    cheers, mark.

Don't listen to anyone here but Stick. He gave the best advice.
Now, it might be a good idea to flash to a newer BIOS. If you have a Winnie or Venice, then v1.5 should be fine and was the one I used for a long time. The next move is to make sure your SATA drive(s) are plugged into ports 3 and 4, because ports 1 and 2 are not locked and will hinder your OC's and could lead to disc corruption and/or a borked OS.
You dropped the HTT multi to 4x, good move. That caused me a bunch of headaches at first. The next move is drop the RAM to the 166 divider. Don't drop your timings to 2.5,5,5,7 (this isn't DDR2), it is unecessary. Simply drop the RAM to the 166 divider and increase the HTT to 240Mhz. That will put your RAM at about 200Mhz, or its rated speed, while OCing the CPU to 2xxxMhz. This will rule the RAM out as a possible cause for your problem. Once the RAM is out of the way, work on the CPU.
Depending on what type of chip you have, and how well it OC's, you may or may not have to increase the vcore. I have a 3000+ Venice that will do 2500Mhz with the stock 1.376v, and a 146 Opty(San Diego) that will do 2750Mhz with the stock vcore of 1.376v. It all depends on the chip at this point. If it doesn't post, or boot, increase the vcore one bump. If that doesn't do it, then bump it again. I would go no higher than 1.5v to reach 2400 - 2600Mhz though...
Once the you have it running at a speed you are happy with, and have tested it for stabilty, you can then move on to playing with the RAM and its timings. For now though I would worry more about getting the CPU where I'd want it then the RAM.
The Neo2 is probably one of THE best s939 AGP boards out there, and they are capable of some really sick stuff...Keep trying, be patient, and good luck.

  • Freezing issues with K8N Neo2 Plat & 6800 gt

Well I get random freezing during games. Sometimes it freezes for 5-10 seconds then comes back, while other times it just freezes and the sound comes back but not the game.
I had this problem when I first upgraded.
    K8N Neo2 plat
    1gb corsair xms 3200
    athlon 64 3500
    aslo have:
420-30? antec tru power supply. I cant remember exact number.
    6800gt ultra
    audigy 2 plat
Now I first posted my problem a while ago and someone told me to try chaning the HT to 4x instead of 5x. So I did and it worked. It worked for a few weeks and now the problems have come back.
    Any Ideas?

Along with the above issues, I've also found that a lot of my gaming probs with the 6800 are due to it being a "bandwidth hog" & it's latency needs to be adjusted lower to enable the other devices on the PCI bus (i.e. sound card) to get enough bandwidth to function properly. This isn't noticeable until you start some heavy gaming with a lot going on at once...
If your game ever practically chugs to a halt when a lot of sounds are being produced, this is the main problem. Here's a way & some notes on how to deal with it. Just like every "tweak" though, it's not guaranteed to work for everyone but I got noticeable benefits from it.
    - D/L (I got it @ guru3D) PCI Latency Tool & give the "Read Me" a quick once-over. Write down the values for your devices, in case you need/want to change 'em back. Most items are well labeled - the 6800 & your sound card will be what you are most interested in. I wouldn't mess with the rest of 'em, as they deal with low level system items that are best left alone. Unless you are truly an Uber Geek!
    - The latency for my 6800 listed as a massive 248 clks! For some reason, I've read that ATI cards don't default at such a large value, which might explain why people don't seem to have as many performance issues with 'em. Anyhow lower the 6800 to a more "reasonable" value, like 128 or 64. 64 seemed to work best for me.
    - Save the settings, reboot & test it out. You can experiement with the sound card latency too, in order to find what works best for you, but I wouldn't set it at less than it's default value (32).
    Hope this helps.

kweckstrom I'm still a little confused you claim to have been building computers since computers were practically invented but you coulden't figure out how to get a new 939 board up and running reliably?? It's really not that hard.. not like the P90 (the pentium that didn't run)
    1 you check for compatability,
    2 you buy your parts,
    3 you put it together..
    4 it runs.
First of all, you should read an entire post before replying. You must not have read it, because I obviously DID figure it out.
If you look at the compatibility list for the MSI board, it's abysmal. They test VERY few modules, and they haven't tested anything newer. Newer modules (like the newer Corsair XL's or Micron Ballistix) remain untested, and aren't likely to BE tested "officially". The Corsair 3200LLPT's worked fine in my P4 rig. They worked fine on the Gigabyte 939 NF3 board. One can reasonably expect that they would have worked fine on the MSI, after all it's the same chipset.
But no, they didn't.  Not even after upgrading my power supply. Yet if I slap all this stuff together on the gigabyte board, all was fine and dandy, even on a PS that only delivered 18A on +12v.
When I tried out the ballistix, I ran into even worse problems, even after ignoring SPD and upping voltage to it's rated 2.8v. But after upgrading my Power Supply, those problems went away and the system is now rock solid and stable.
I'm an older guy with a wife and 2 kids, not to mention a full-time career as a network engineer. I don't have tons of nights and weekends to work through nagging compatibility or stability issues. That's why I say I wouldn't put myself through that mess again.
    Quote
If your buying enthousiast grade parts expect to do a little research first because it's a fact there are more untested parts and there will be some incompatabilities but it's absolutely no different than any intel platform of the same age..
Maybe you should have had someone with a little more time and skill build a system for you??
Then you may have been able to aviod these PEBCAK errors lol
Taking the high road, I see
You should actually read my post next time. I solved the problem long ago. I'm simply saying that this platform is an annoying one because there are tons of incompatibilities that lead to stability issues. That's fact, and you aren't much of an engineer if you dispute it.
What you say about intel systems of the same age is completely untrue. You'd have a hard time finding an intel board that's incompatible with DDR2 by any specific vendor. You'd also have a hard time finding any intel boards that have quirks with PCI Express cards. You'll also have a hard time finding any Power Supply compatibilities with LGA775, because a specific type of power supply is required (dual-rail with PCI-E headers). Sorry, you're wrong here.
On the Athlon64-939, out of the gate you'll have problems with certain hardware.
Take the Geforce 6800's.... The 6800's don't require 2D and 3D clock speeds to be identical on a P4 system. The bios by default doesn't normalize clock speeds for 2d and 3d, because a 425mhz 2D core value uses power needlessly and doesn't make much sense. But if you're on the Nforce3 platform, you're FORCED to set them identically or your 3d games will stutter and eventually freeze.
There's people with issues on Nforce3 using Fast Writes. Some people have to disable them. You simply don't need to do this on intel.
There's people with issues using Audigy cards (the original Audigy 1). They cause BSOD's. This doesn't happen on Intel systems. They work fine there. (Audigy 2 is unaffected).
If someone's doing research into problems regarding the Athlon64 platform, i'm not going to blow sunshine up everyone's butt. I'm going to tell it like it is. I'm not married to any specific vendor, and i'm not someone who's going to insult someone's system building or research skills because he ran into problems with his latest build.
These problems are VERY real, and if you read this board it's LOADED with people who are having issues with stability. You shouldn't be quick to blame their research or skill with a screwdriver.

  • What is it with the onboard devices on Neo2 Plat.

What is it with the onboard devices on the Neo2 Plat. The sound really really sucks. Bass is like not there at all, other sounds is of LOW quality - Even with the Nforce driver the sound sucks, infact this is the WORST onboard sound I have ever tried.
The wireless module is also a tragic "thing". Keeps reseting ur conection every 15 mins or so (I have 3 computers with wireless, the Neo 2 Plat is the only haveing this problem).  When the wireless is working (until the next reset in 15 mins) the Package loss is like 40%???? What is that.
I thought I had a "DOA" MOBO device, GOT ANOTHER ONE. SAME SHITE.
Even tried the Win64 RC edition, guess what, same problems.
If I am wrong about this let me know (find it hard to belive since I have tested 2 Neo2 Plat, with the same problems).

take a look at the new apple wireless keyboard... they use the same layout.

  • New K8N NEO2 PLAT. and SC-939 3200+ help needed...

    Hello,
I have just upgraded my system with K8N Neo2 Plat. and sc-939 3200+ A64 Cpu.
There are several issues I need to resolve which are:
1- Although I change from BIOS the settings for AGP to 4x8x and enable fast writes, I still cant see them turned on from the Catalyst Control Center. Everything is greyed out what can I do? They all used to be on and agp was 8x with my K7N2 Delta board....
2- Although I installed the original drivers from the MSI CD, I couldn't get one of the network prts to install. Realtek installed OK. But other one is defined by the device manager as standart network adapter. What can I do?
3- I am brand new to A64 system so I do not know what setting to use from BIOS can you help me out, for instance there are values for HT such as x3 x4 x5  mine is set to x5? what is this? should  I enable cool and quiet, I am not intended to do overclocking. Can you give me some tips for best performance?
    My best regards.

Make sure your bios is up to date: version 1.5. Look at the sticky threads and use the information to enable hidden bios features. Disable ATI/NV speedup in the bios. Uninstall your drivers and reinstall. If the information is still greyed out, download the free version of Sandra here: http://downloads.guru3d.com/ and check the module under video system information. This will tell you if fast writes are enabled and your AGP setting. Leave the HT(hyper-transport) set to 5X unless you plan on oc'ing, if you do oc then may find you'll need to reduce it to 4X or 3X. Try downloading the latest driver for your network from the MSI website. Right click the device in device manager and select update, select specific location then "don't look...I'll choose", direct it to the file where you've unpacked the correct driver and then update.

  • K8N Neo2 Plat Probs!

    Lo Guys
Well I currently bought some hardware to upgrade my machine and i got myself a Neo2 Plat and a 3500+ 939 chip
Now this is where it gets annoying, she wont start up....not even alittle.
Ive seen the fans spin up for a few seconds but it didnt boot properly.
I have used this hardware as a test setup for the mobo/cpu
    1x 256mb DDR2700 module
    2x 256mb DDR3200 modules
    1x Antec Smartblue 350w psu
    1x 300w Generic crappy psu
    1x Ati 9600se gfx card
    1x Geforce 4200ti gfx card.
Thats the hard ware ive used but ive mixed them up to see if the machine had probs with any individual componants but nothing. ive plugged in everythign correctly like the 4pin 12v plug but nothing.
Ive reseated the hsf and cpu 3times yet to no avail.
I dont have the d-plate with the LED so i dont know if its the board or not but most likely i think it is.
Anyone have any suggestions on what i should do?
    Thanks guys.

K8N Neo2 is a dual chl motherboard and so is the CPU (dual chl. memory controller) , so it will never post with 3 dimms .
Use the equal modules in the slots closest to the cpu , one in green and one in purple slot .
Disconnect AC from PSU when moving around memory as there is 5v standby voltage running around .
When correctly placed to a cmos reset , then see if you get it to post .
Ahh i think you understood mate.
I only used one or the other type of memory. not all together. Also ive reset the CMOS plenty of times.
