Overclocking an i7-2700k on P67A-GD65

My specs are:
Intel Core i7-2700K @ stock speeds (Cooled by Hyper 212 Plus)
MSI P67A-GD65 (B3)
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 16GB DDR3 1600
Crucial M4 128GB SATA III
2x 2TB Samsung Spinpoint F4 (Storage)
ATI Radeon 4870x2
Samsung Blue-Ray Combo/DVD Burner
CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX850 V2
LIAN LI Lancool PC-K62
So I tried Overclocking yesterday after watching a guide on YouTube.. It seemed pretty easy on a sandy bridge so I thought I'd give it a try. I went into bios changed the CPU voltage to 1.35, changed the CPU multiplier to 45, and enabled XMP profile, I then saved settings and rebooted. Windows booted up fine, turned on prime 95 and opened up real temp and ran prime 95 to make sure CPU temps stayed below 70C. One core managed to reach 70 but other than that everything was gone so Im assuming everything was stable and good. I reboot my pc and you know how when you install new ram or CPU, while rebooting for the first time it says new CPU installed etc? Well that popped up and I got curious so I went into bios and everything went back to default again. So I set up it up All over again, saved and rebooted and now I'm getting a blue screen. So I reboot go into bios and notice my sata isn't set to AHCI. So I set it and reboot. Widows loads again... I then reboot again and I get a blue screen.. Also noticing my motherboard light is flashing. I check the manual and it told me that one of my bios profiles failed. I looked up how to fix it online and managed to fix it. The light disappeared, went into bios tried to oc it again... Saved.. Rebooted light started flashing.. Windows booted up fine. I then restarted... And the comp restarted on its own a few times during post. I fix the light flashing set everything to default and now I'm clueless as to why this is happening to me. Do any of you have any ideas why??!
I'm sorry for such a long post, I'm just trying to explain what I did the best I could. If you have any questions please ask and I'll try to answer!!!!

Also, 20 minutes into PRIME 95 and CoreTEMP and RealTEMP... this is what i have so far..... memory has not been modifiied in bios... Only the 1.35 CPU Core Voltage and Multiplier is 45.
I just stopped the Prime95 and the final 4 highest temps were 66  73 74 71. That's too high huh?

  • RADEON 7950 WONT BOOT WITH P67A-GD65

    Just got a new ATI Radeon HD7950 graphics card a couple of days ago and it refuses to even boot in my main PC (Intel i7-2700K, MSI P67A-GD65).
    Won't even get into BIOS. Just black screen.
    Updated to latest BIOS. Still nothing.
    Today I have tried the card in an older PC (Intel Q6600, ASUS Maximus Formula) and it works just fine.
    So I thought it might have been a power supply issue so I swapped the power supply from old PC into my new PC, but it still didn't work.
    So now I think its an incompatibility with the MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard.
    Note: Previous graphics card was ATI Radeon 6870 which is still working fine with P67A-GD65.
    Can anyone suggest why this graphics card won't boot with the P67A-GD65?

  • P67A-GD65 Overclocking Help!

    Hey everyone - I'm new to the forums and fairly new to overclocking in general, although I understand the basics of it... I've run into a snag, though.
    Recently I was redoing my desktop (Intel i5 2500k, MSI P67A-GD65, 16GB DDR3 1600 RAM, yada yada) and decided to update the BIOs, something I hadn't thought of doing since I built the PC over a year and a half ago... So, I updated from 1.9 (I think... it was 1.something) to the latest 4.3, and did a reformat on the HDDs and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit... So I'm from scratch. I go into the BIOs to tweak the CPU and all, but I can't adjust anything at all. It's all stuck on "AUTO". I can't make the adjustments I need to make to overclock the CPU... I've read through several tutorials and threads on more forums than I care to admit, and my head is starting to hurt from (1) reading so much and (2) banging my head into the desk over this... Am I missing something? I've read that 4.3 has had some issues when it comes to OC'ing... What should I do? I can grab screenshots or more specs if needed. Thanks for the help in advance - I definitely appreciate it!

    I did a CMOS reset with the "Reset CMOS" button on the motherboard... After I did that and restarted the PC, a message came up informing me that the CMOS had been restored to default settings and asked if I wanted to go into setup or boot as normal... I can pop the battery and PSU cable out if needed... At this point, I'd be perfectly happy reverting back to a Sandy Bridge friendly BIOS, lol...
    I did install the new drivers after flashing the new BIOS, by the way. Followed all the instructions in the link you posted.

    I've just bought a SB mobo & CPU and try to figure out what can I do with it in terms of o/c. Just for my future reference.
    My CPU is i5 2300.
    Mobo is MSI P67A-GD65(B3).
    PSU is OCZ Z-Series 850W
    and cooler is CM Hyper 212 Plus.
    I don't touch BCLK so far and I don't touch OC Genie button and I won't touch it (got used to manual driving). As far as I know all SB do have TurboBoost *PLUS* 4-tick addition (or even more with less cores active). So armed with that knowledge I entered MSI UEFI setup and disabled all energy engines (except this max 1W European standby norm.. can't remember name at this moment, sorry), so turbo 3.1 + 4 ticks should be 3.5 GHz.

    And my problem is I can't reach it ;-) All I can get is 3.3 GHz (x33). CPU-Z shows me stable 3.3 with no falls to 1.6 (as energy managers are off). Even under full load (Prime95) it still shows 3.3, BTW interesting... Intel Turbo Boost Monitor shows raising bar upto 3.3 GHz under stress only, once Prime is disabled = bar falls down.
    Bios is the newest (1.E). Temps under full load are about 50 deg. All voltages are auto (except memory which is 1.5 V). It doesn't matter if I set x34 or x35 CPU multiplier both in UEFI setup, and using MSI Control Centre.. as always I've got 3.3 GHz (x33) shown by CPU-Z 1.58. VDrop setting is Auto.
    I'd promise once I've seen 3.4, but it was my first shot, rather for observing new cooler and temps.. and it was older BIOS.
    Is it everything what can i5-2300 give to me, or is it possible to get more (x35) somehow ? I will try BCLK later, now I'd like to find maximum multiplier.

    I was just curious, and far away from frustration, how much is worth my new "baby", let me remind my first sentence:

    I don't know why people treat this as newbie stu*id question "OMG, mummy bought me this PC and my brother told me what o/c is and I want to make a rocket now"
    I always do such "recko" like maximum o/c after purchase, which allows me to build the future strategy for years, that's all
    BTW, I'm happy with it (so far) as it's noticeably faster, cooler and more energy efficient than Q9550 I have had before. And the whole platform doesn't make my soundcard having "cracked", so I'd say it's a fullness of happiness.

    Unfortunately the re-flash of the BIOS to official 4.3 didn't make any difference to the problem.
    CPU is still throttling down from 4.5GHz to 3.9GHz as soon as load is applied.
    Can you confirm what settings I should have for -

    Overspeed Protection
    Intel C-State
    Any other ideas?
    I do a lot of video encloding work and this throttling is increasing encode times significantly, i.e. from 4-hours to 7-hours.

    Hello everyone, Before I explain my problem these are the components I'm using.
    Motherboard:P67A-GD65 (B3)
    CPU:Intel 2600k
    So just recently I flashed my BIOS to the most recent version which is 4.3. and before this I was running my multiplier at 4.5 with no issues. But now when I change my multiplier programs like CPU-ID and CoreTemp aren't reflecting the changes being made in my BIOS they just show the stock speed the CPU runs at which is 3.4GHz. But then windows shows that the changes have been made so I don't know what to believe. Also in the BIOS screenshot you can see at the top it says my CPU is running at 3.8 GHz You can check out the screen shots to see what I mean. Anyways my question is, Is my CPU really overclocked right now or is Windows lying to me and if it is, how can I fix this?

  • P67a-GD65 System Freezes and Recovers During 3D gaming and Online Video

    The Problem:
    Temporary system freeze with audio stutter. The system recovers 30sec - 2min later.
    Key presses made during freeze will execute after system recovers (ctrl+alt+delete for example)
    Usually, but not always, I see an error message in the system tray and I do NOT experience bsod.
    This happens seemingly at random from 3D accelerated applications, and web browsing. Games such as BF3 (moderate), WoW (seldom), Planetside 2 (frequently), Minecraft (seldom), Hawken (seldom), etc.
    Also happens frequently in both Internet Explorer 9/10, Firefox, Chrome, and Steam store browser. Typically when watching steaming video (youtube, HULU, flow player, etc)
    but Pandora audio streaming also seems to create the conditions where this happens.

    Updated Intel Rapid Storage drivers (no improvment)
    Cleared CMOS and tested system at default settings with no overlock (no improvement)
    Flashed 6950 back to 6950 stock bios and removed overclock (no improvement)
    Replaced old 6950 with new GTX 670 (problem still occurs in the same exact way)
    Tried GPU in 2nd PCIe slot. No improvement.
    Checked GPU Temps. GTX 670 fan profile in EVGA Precision X set to keep temp below 70 degrees Celcius. Card maxes at 60 degrees under heavy gaming load.
    Complete reformat of raid array with fresh install of Windows (4 different times) Seemed to help for a few days, then freezes came back
    Ran OCCT and Prime 95 Torture tests separately for a few hours at stock and OC settings. System stable with core temps of high 50's overclocked, and low 40's stock.
    Ran Memtest86 for 10 hours with zero errors.
    Used digital multimeter to test 12v rail on PSU. Noted solid 12v reported. Didn't test other rails.
    Unplugged PSU cables from motherboard and reattached firmly
    Ran HD Tune and Data Life Guard Tools for error checking on hard disks. Zero errors found.
    Disabled Windows Aero (no improvement)
    Updated Adobe Flash Player to latest setting (no improvement)
    Removed Adobe Flash Player (no improvement)
    Turned off Adobe Flash hardware acceleration (no improvement)
    *EDIT: Forgot that I also adjusted Nvidia driver profiles for apps that have frozen to include power preference to max performance
    All of my hardware with the exception of the new 670 was purchased and configured back in February of 2011. This problem first occured in BF3 multiplayer sometime in early 2012,
    and has gradually been happening more frequently. Web searches found many individuals with this error, but the solutions are all over the map, and I've tried just about everything that I've found.
    I think I've narrowed the problem down to the motherboard, but I just can't find a clear answer or solution. Maybe it's the raid array? I really thought replacing the GPU would solve my trouble here
    and I was...NOT happy when it happened again with the new 670 that I scored for $250 after amazon gift cards. I typically get kicked/disconnected during online game play when this happens and I'm ready to be done with it. I was hoping to fix the issue without needing to buy new hardware, but I don't see any other way at this point.
    My patience runs thin. Please help!

    I do not have another 1155 lga board to test the cpu in unfortunately, hence the CPU stress testing.  Based upon previous experiences with multiple overclocked systems that I've run at much more aggressive overclocks, I don't believe I'm seeing a processor failure, though I can't rule out the possibility.

    No I don't have another PSU to test. I did use a digital multimeter to test the 12v rail, as well as the motherboard contacts for testing voltage to the cpu and system  They were all right in line with what I'm seeing reported in the bios.  I did not test these contacts while the system was under load however, so I may need to do it again.

  • P67A-GD65 (B3) will not boot with external USB DVD connected.

    Damnedest thing... just put the build together last night and this was the biggest issue. If I connect my external Samsung USB DVD RW the system stops booting and only displays (B3) in the bottom right corner of my display. If I remove the USB plug the system boots and operates normally. If I connect it to the USB port after boot the system recognizes it and it works fine. The same issue occurs no matter which USB2/3 port I plug it into. I've banged around the BIOS and cannot see any issues in the boot sequence that would indicate an issue. Anyone else in das same boot?

    They are working on it. They sent me a BETA BIOS to try out. The BIOS v1.10B3 was dated 3-17-2011 and it nearly bricked my system though.  Here is the response I sent to them the other night after a few hours with a massive headache trying to bring my system back up:

    I only wish they had informed me of the changes to the CPU voltage up front or included a change log so I could have made an informed decision as to whether or not I wanted to try the BETA BIOS. I was under the impression (mistakenly) that it simply addressed the USB DVD issue. I'll wait for the new release BIOS. I can live without the external USB DVD being plugged in at boot. Bricking my MOBO and having to RMA would be a far less desirable outcome. :p That said.. I'd still recommend this MOBO. It has relatively few issues and MSI support is responsive so far.

    My build has been stable for about 3 months now but today I went to play a game but the monitor was turned off. I switched the computer off and back on and it started power cycling. I reset the CMOS and it still power cycled. I also tried 1 RAM stick in every RAM slot but still same thing. Everything is plugged in correctly as I have been using it succesfully for the last 3 months until now. Would it be safe to say that I need to RMA it?

    As for the statement which I have highlighted in Bold, that is a very general statement to make. To begin with, the problem of P67 chipsets lies with Intel and Intel has issued an official notice several months ago on the issues. Though revisions like B3 version had been released to solve the glitches found in the P67 chipsets, no one knows how many other problems are still unannounced thus no one dares to speculate. Do note, that the P67 chipset problem affects all manufacturers worldwide as everyone only gets their P67 from one source, which is obviously, Intel.
    As far as I'm concerned about stability, the below quoted is what I have done and have been doing all this while before any tweaking starts.

    Trust me, 1 week is a good time frame for monitoring.   • P67a-GD65 Bios 4.39 Turbo-boost problem

    Hi,
    i just finished overclocking my system and it's working great all but for one thing. I can't enable turbo-boost anywhere in bios. I have to do it in the settingsmenu in Realtemp every time i restart the computer, its getting annoying. Any tips?

  • P67A-GD65 & i7-2600K BIOS update

    As the title of this topic states, I have a P67A-GD65 board with an i7-2600K CPU. I read a lot about updating the BIOS to version 4.x (current version is 1.19), but I got confused whether I can safely update the BIOS of my mainboard with this CPU or not. Some people seem to succeed and some don't. Is it possible to update the BIOS from 1.19 to 4.x with this combination of MB and CPU and if so, which exact version should I choose and is there anything I should absolutely not do wrong in the process?

    All 4.x bios versions are meant for using Ivy Bridge cpus (ME8). In most cases overclocking Sandy Bridge cpus doesn't work with those or not properly. On the other hand all new versions work that way and a newer version is needed for supporting latest Geforce GTX7x0 vgas. So if you want to use latest stuff on your board switch to the latest bios (4.3). If no hardware change is planned stick to the latest Sandy bios (1.19).
    If wanting to upgrade to 4.3 use the attached archive and >>use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<. With the tool point to the attached and NOT unpacked bios archive (Mode1: Point to Archive) and let the tool prepare a flash stick for you.

    Alrighty everyone, so this might end up being a fairly lengthy article, but I want to make sure I give you all of the information so you can correctly assess.
    Earlier in the year, I decided that I needed a desktop for college. I had seen people do it before and I was fairly adept at computers, so I put the computer together with the above components from newegg.
    Originally, I put the desktop together in about five hours and hooked it up. Worked great, except on startup it gave (and still gives) me an error of saying "No Hard Disk Detected", however the opposite could not be truer as it found my hard drive when I loaded the OS; Windows 7. I then tested it that night with Starcraft II and it worked great; no minor bugs, nothing. The following day, I pull all of my games/programs on it including skype. Here is where things started to get weird. On Borderlands, everything went great and without a hitch, however when I started Civilization V, after playing for about an hour, it froze. And this freeze froze everything; the keyboard, the monitor, the mouse, etc. A buzzing sound came from the speakers and a hard restart was necessary. This freeze also happened again during the Multiplayer for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Starcraft II (after about an hour), League of Legends and even Skype, while using my webcam. Also, in the Windows reliability program and windows events, no freeze is registered.
    So I thought "oh, this is obviously overheating or a voltage problem" (the cpu temps were getting between 85-90 C's). So I fixed the RAM's voltage so it fit exactly what it needed (it required 1.65 volts, but the auto detect only gave it 1.5, so it was around .15 off). While waiting for the fan and thermal paste to come, I reinstalled Windows 7, reinstalled the drivers for all of my components and checked event viewer (which I ended up needlessly fixing an event 3011 and 3012 for corrupt performance readers).
    My fan and paste came in yesterday and applied both, making my cpu super-cooled leveling off at a max of 50 C's at full load and 25-30 C's idling. The hottest component is now the GPU which usually hits 65-70 C's under full load.
    At this point, I figured "great, I have been freeze-free for 2 days, let's retest", so I played two games of league of legends last night (around 1.5 hours) on skype and it froze. Again. Once I restarted my desktop to let everyone know what happened (and loaded skype and rejoined the conversation) I only got in two words before it froze again.
    In summary, basically under stress, especially under games/programs requiring the internet, the computer has a full freeze, requiring a hard reset. I tried to fix the voltages (RAM) as well as cool the computer, which seemed to work only for a short while. Further once the computer freezes, whenever I turn it back on, it is more prone to freezing unless I leave it off overnight.
    I'm not even necessarily looking for an answer, just an idea of where to start. Thanks again, I would really appreciate some help on this one.

    Update: I used Prime95 to test it as well as Intel Burn Test. No freeze during IBT, and for Prime95 it usually gets hit on the In-Place Large FFT or Blend Test. Hasn't frozen on Small FFT. I also just updated the the mobo's BIOS again to the latest one. Also, with the update, if I put the RAM's voltage at 1.65 (or anything above Auto), it won't boot the OS.
    Any ideas welcome.

    However, I AM willing to check the c-state, but I will need some information first to make sure my desktop won't explode if I do this wrong.
    1) What does the C-State do?
    2) How do I disable it?
    3) Is this really an option I should check into?

    It won't help you with your problem but I've tested C-state for a while and you can read what it will do in the link HU16E provided. I've noticed that in Idle state the usage of power drops a couple of watts, so when you have your PC in idle a lot of time and you care about power saving it's worth trying. When overclocking it can be unstable however. I have a CPU that handles all cores set to 46 with all energy settings on and auto Vcore completely stable, when going to 47 I have to compensate. The first thing I have to do is disable C-State because it will BSOD when in idle for a while. So I will suggest that if you use stock settings and care about power saving you try it and otherwise disable it.

  • MSI P67A-GD65 killed my USB drives

    I recently bought MSI P67A-GD65 and I am having a weird problem: I plugged my seagate usb drive and corsair voyager gt usb flash memory stick into usb 3 port on the motherboard and the stopped working (memory stick is dead and smells burned) and the drive is not recognized as proper usb device anymore - result both of them dead. As I recently used these usb devices only with my computer and a old laptop it looks pretty bad for msi motherboard.
    I have a power adapter with shortcut safety and a descent PSU chieftech GPS 650GB, I do not overclock, when I upgraded my PC I replaced motherboard, cpu, memory and graphic card the other components are the same (PSU etc) and I never had the same problem before
    No the questions:
    1. Did anyone else have the same problem?
    2. How can I diagnose it, I am going to replace my usb drives, but how can I be sure I can use them with my PC?
    3. If it is a msi's fault how can I get reimbursted for my damaged property?

     Why don't you provide the information asked for? So far all you have provided is model of motherboard and other information is so vague it's just about useless.

  • P67a-gd65: OC & Speedstep

    My system is running fine, and overclocks to 4.0GHz(manual), 4.2(OCGenie), 4.4(manual) - all ok with prime95, OCCT.
    However, whenever it's overclocked, I'd like it to step down to save power, when not under heavy load (it steps down to 1.6GHz when not OC'd).
    Ignorant question - which BIOS setting enables this, or is it not possible when OC'd?
    I've tried EIST both ways, and 'enable frequency change in OS' settings.

    i bought a pre overclocked bundle with the below spec....with default settings i can install windows with a raid config...no sweat.
    If i try OC genie(at 4.2ghz) i can get into windows fine...but 10 minutes into black ops and it blue screens.
    with the OC profile provided by overclockers(4.6ghz) i can even boot into windows...it seems to struggle to recognize my raid config. i just get "machine check error" or a blinking cursor...sometimes it goes to shell command prompt.
    each time i change the OC settings....i make sure raid is reselected and my boot options are reselected.....1/ HD 2/dvd.
    ive been chatting with overclockers for a week now...and they seem to keep recommending the same things....then suggest trying a different drive setup. Which im confused by...i dont see the point in trying with IDE or AHCI....if ultimatly im aiming for raid 0 config??
