Overclocking and to D.O.T or not to D.O.T?

First off, please forgive my very newbish question here. While I have built a couple of systems, this is my first journey into the world of overclocking.
A bit of background:
The rig I have built in my sig, with no overclocking, has been performing very well and rock solid with gaming and general use for 8 months now. I have just started to venture into the world of video editing and converting my videos into a format that can be streamed. That is when I hit the performace wall, and realized for this kind of CPU hungry use I needed to either upgrade my build  after a pitifully short 8 months, or look into overclocking my system to squeeze every ounce of performance I can get from it. Not having wads of cash readily available, I decided to get my feet wet in overclocking.
My first foray into overclocking has been to just stick my toes into the water and let the system overclock for me using the D.O.T options in the BIOS. Doing some experimenting, I have found that I can get some fairly good gains in performance ~+10% in benchmarks by simply bumping the D.O.T level to 'colonel'. The 'general' setting is unstable, giving me the BSOD whenever the overclocking kicks in.
Here is some hopefully relevent info on my setup. This is the CPU-Z display when D.O.T has kicked in.
Temp wise I go from 37C (idle) to 47C (Overclocked Load)
And here are my benchmarks when using D.O.T: (3DMark05)
Main Test Results
3DMark Score 5321 3DMarks
CPU Score     5156 CPUMarks
Okay, now to the meat of my question.
How much CPU headroom do I have on my hardware, above and beyond what I am getting with the D.O.T settings I am using? I have reached the limit as far as using D.O.T('general' setting being unstable), but could I get significantly better gains if I manually overclocked?
Or.. would I be better off staying ignorant of the mysteries of manual overclocking, and just save my money to one day buy an Athalon X2?
Thanks!

first of all, if you are using DOT, you have no control on the OC. the system is overclocked using some defaults settings programed into the cell chip. that means that it doesn't take into consideration the hardware you are using, and its limitations. this might result in instability.
second, the max OC with DOT is 11% if i remember correctly. that is a puny OC attempt, especially if you are running a A64 3000+ like i do. i can get to almost 50% OC for the CPU using different methods than DOT, instead of 11%.

Overclocking and RAID, do they mix???

What board do you have?  It makes a difference in this case.  For example, the Via K8T800 based boards do not have PCI/AGP locks, so raising the FSB overclocks all the other components as well, including the HDD controller, and it has been observed that for these boards, RAID arrays will become unstable at FSB settings above about 225 MHz, at most, so overclocking and RAID do not really gotogether on these boards.  The nforce3 based boards, on the other hand, should have PCI/AGP locks, though I think (but I'm not sure) that you have to explicitly enable them in BIOS, and I've seen some threads questioning whether or not they actually work, so again the board might have problems with high FSB settings, although I'm pretty sure an nforce3 board would have a working lock and thus be able to overclock with a RAID array defined.  Finally, if you have a nforce4 based board, it should definately have a functional lock on it, and it should handle the RAID just fine when overclocking.

  • Overclocking and Durability

Hello, my name is Emilio and i live in Argentina. I recently purchased the machine described in the sig. The thing is, with the economy here this machine has to last forever. In my company's system i put in all the old machines when i buy a new one, so for you guys to have an idea this is the system: one Pentium 133, one AMDK6 400, one PIII 700, and one Duron 1.6. I can't even remember when i got the first machine and it still runs in win98, oddly enough the K6 and the PIII are the fastest ones, they even load win98 faster than my new Athlon loads winXP.
Anyways... This new machine is the first one overclock-friendly, and i've heard overclocking, aside from the ocasional crash, heavily reduces the machines life. That is not important in the first world, where you can change your machine every year, but here it is a big deal. So i wish to ask everyone their opinion (or better, their experience) on overclocking and durability, and after all, is overclocking such a good idea really?

    Hi,
I suppose it depends on your rig. Personally, I didn't see any real benefits from overclocking - I was expecting much greater speed and 3Dmark 2001 scores - than I got.
I left it overclocked (1533MHz OC't to around 1800MHz) for a week then set my machine back to stock, the difference between the two was barely noticeable in all modes of use.
    Conclusion: disadvantages outway the benefits.
As I say though, it depends on your rig.

You dont need that to oveclock. I would find a trash can for the MSI software. copy and paste what is below to note pad and save as a .reg file named what you want and merge it in. then open the advanced display settings and have some fun.
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak]
    "Coolbits"=dword:00000003
    "NvCplEnableAGPSettingsPage"=dword:00000001
BTW use drivers from nVidia's web site

BIOS 3.4 - destroyed overclock and wierd CPU prob

Happy to see you have problem cause only few mention this.
I have it too with Venice 3500+. Forced multiplier 5, forced min. voltage and I get a cool 5x200. To fix it I must use HTT of 5, then rest acts normal. Anything but 5 and it defaults to this minimum setup. Yes, C&Q is turned off. May be if we set up C&Q in OS that would help but not going to happen.
Solution for me is to use bios 3.2 which dont have either RAID bug or 219 bug - which actually is a 22x bug for me. Ive done all P95 tests at 11x246 for min. 12 hours. Im not happy with solution or 3.2 though and hope new beta also fix this problem not so many talk about. Think Ive seen 5-6 crying about it in public. With HTT 5 you wouldnt notice, guess most use that.
If you test new beta bios and it does fix this please post so I know 3.5 is worth waiting for. Beta is not 100% compatible with our mobo I think - not sure you should flash unless you got bios savior, some have done it but Im not going to.
Link to beta https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=82493.0 but be careful...

  • When I plug in my iPhone to sync, it starts but does not complete the process and several pieces of data are not being transferred to my iPhone from my MacBook Air.

    Problem:
When I plug in my iPhone to sync, it starts but does not complete the process and several pieces of data are not being transferred to my iPhone from my MacBook Air.
Any help that you can provide in helping my iPhone accurately sync with iPhoto and iTunes will be greatly appreciated.
    Symptoms:
    1)   Sync:  It’s not completing the sync.  Below, I’ve provided all of my settings from the iTunes Summary tab so that you might tell me if I’ve selected any incorrect options.  I prefer to sync the “old school” way – by connecting to the computer – as opposed to syncing over the cloud. Perhaps this is what’s causing the problem? Here is a list of the steps displayed in the iTunes window as the sync progresses:
waiting for sync to start (step 1 of 7)
backing up (step 2 of 7)
preparing to sync (step 3 of 7)
determining apps to sync (step 4 of 7)
preparing apps to sync (step 5 of 7)
importing photos (step 6 of 7)
waiting for changes to be applied (step 7 of 7)
syncing apps / copying 1 of 4 (App name) (step 7 of 7)
    canceling sync
    apple icon
    2)   Photos: I've selected only certain of my iPhoto albums to sync to my iPhone.  All of the albums are correct/complete in iPhoto.  All of the albums are listed on my iPhone, both before and after the sync, but the albums are empty (no actual photos) before and after the sync. Perhaps this is tied to the fact that the sync isn’t completing, but because “importing photos” is one of the steps that the incomplete sync displays, I don’t know.
    3)   Apps: When I launch iTunes and click on the Apps folder under the Library listing, then click on the Updates tab, iTunes searches for any Apps needing to be updated and provides a list.  If I click on Update All, the Apps are successfully updated in iTunes.  But, when I plug in my iPhone so that the updates will transfer to the apps on my iPhone, the updates don’t transfer to the apps on my iPhone and those apps still reflect that they need updating on the iPhone.
    Other Potential Pertinent Info:
The flash memory hard drive on my MacBook Air recently died (perhaps a month or two ago).  Apple had emailed me about a known issue and literally the next day, my MacBook Air crashed.  I installed a new flash memory drive and re-installed everything from a backup off of an external hard drive.  Everything seems to be working fine; it recreated accurately all of my software and data, including iPhoto and iTunes, the pictures and songs (respectively) for which are stored on that hard drive, as opposed to being on the flash memory in the MacBook Air itself.  However, I don’t recall if the start of the sync problem described herein started happening at the same time that I replaced the flash memory drive.  All I know is that the computer is working perfectly in all respects and that even as the sync is failing, it at least says that it’s doing the right things and looking in the right places (e.g., the list of albums on my iPhone matches the list of albums in iTunes, etc.).
    Settings/Status:
    MacBook Air
    OSX v. 10.9
    iPhoto ’11 v. 9.5 (902.7)
    iPhone iOS 7.0.4
    iTunes v. 11.1.3 (8)
    Summary Tab
    Backups (This Computer)
    Options
Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected
Sync only checked songs and videos
    Photos Tab
Sync Photos from iPhoto (429 Photos)
Selected albums, Events, and Faces, and automatically include (no Events)
    Albums – 9 are selected

You need to download iTunes on your computer. iOS 6 requires the latest version of iTunes which is 10.7.

  • HT1751 I am trying to retrieve songs from ICloud but its not letting me I've tried logging in  and it says my email is not valid even after i make an account

I have 5th gen Ipod Nano and I have recently bought a new computer and have been syncing all of my music onto itunes. But when I try to login I get locked out. I have tried using ICloud but I still get locked out. So I created a new Apple ID, I have been forced by ICloud to do this many times in the past and eventually the ICLOUD icon will appear and I can sync all my music I have purchased on itunes in the past. I as a customer not only find this process very aggravating but also feel its a waste of my time and money that I have spent purchasing the songs because in a matter of weeks ICloud will log me out. When trying to log back in it will reject my email and password saying its not a valid account when I have already verified the account.  I have also experienced problems with the ipod itself, sometimes the Itunes won’t show that the Ipod is connected when it is or not syncing my music and also not allowing anymore songs to be put on it when it says it has not all the storage has been used up. I have tried uninstalling Itunes and then reinstalling it. The problem seems fixed for a while and then it starts again. I have had to deal with this problem for months now. I find this very frustrating. I don’t see the point in having an Apple ID or password when nobody but me accesses it on itunes. It would make more sense to have an option that will keep account logged in. I also find that your website does not offer any help when encountering this problem. The only options I have online are to login with my apple ID and change my name, email address or password. This also adds to my frustration with Apple. I have tried to turn ICloud on by following your instructions at help.apple.com but still find that the problem isn’t solved. I have looked on your site to see if I have an up to date Itunes downloaded and that ICloud installed correctly and I did. But still cant access my account or retrieve any of the music. I find there are many faults in your system which make it hard for me to enjoy using any of your products. If this continues I may just have to buy a different mp3 player and use that. I do not wish to stop using my Ipod.

    Hi DesCoop,
You must initiallly activate iCloud from an IOS device or a Mac. You cannot inititally activated from a PC.
    Sorry.

  • Reference to database and/or server name in '' is not supported in this version of SQL Server

    Hello all
    I am using C# and ADO.NET (native) - Visual Studio 2013.
I am always using full qualified queries like "SELECT * FROM [database].[schema].[table]"
Obviously there is a problem when doing this against SQL Azure,
I get the following error: "Reference to database and/or server name in '' is not supported in this version of SQL Server"
Interesting fact: With SQL Management Studio, the same query works.
I need to know if this error is really a true one or not.
If yes, I can quit using SQL Azure. I would need a SQL Server and not a partial SQL Server :-)
    Thanks and best regards
    Frank

    Hi,
    Here are my suggestions:
    1. Use partially qualified queries, because:
    a. from a security standpoint, you'd want to limit your login's access across the server instance
    b. in order to achieve a even better, you should specify your database as the Initial Catalog directly in the SQL Connection.
If you take into account these practices, SQL Database doesn't come with any limitation from that point of view.
However, in regard to 'With SQL Management Studio, the same query works', this is actually only partially true because if you run that query agains ADO.NET, you'll actually end up in switching databases along the query which is obviously not permitted in
SQL Database since you're running in a hosted black-box version of SQL you're not managing. It's just like running the USE <dbname> command which obviously doesn't work.

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
I hope this helps, because it was incredibly frustrating. Good luck!

  • Why would the Firewire Port and/or External DVD-RW suddenly not work?

Hi, it's me again. I swear, I must be destined to just use Windows machines...
Anyways, I have a used/refurbished iBook G3 500MHz 320MB RAM Dual USB (1 Firewire)laptop running OS 10.2.8 that I bought a few months ago. I went and purchased an external Firewire/USB 2.0 DVD-RW drive as I only had a CD-ROM drive on my machine and I wanted the option to burn CD's or watch/read data from DVD's (I know that with my slow processor writing DVD's -other than data- would be a stretch and have other machines to do that with anyways so it wasn't a concern really). I received it and installed it, also installed the free version of Toast that came with it, and the drive worked fine. I have not needed to use the drive since then and have not used the laptop much at all since then really, but I do need to say that I did end up adding a new user account, though I can't remember if I changed the original Admin account and then still have the one I created myself when I first started the laptop after I bought it (had a fresh install of Jaguar on it, but I have no disk to re-install with if needed) or if I created a separate (new) account and ended up deleting the Original Admin accout (I know in Windows, you cannot delete the original Admin account but I do not know if that is the same for OSX or not). I did this as I wanted a master Admin account that I just wouldn't really use and then wanted the other as my main account (and use it to connect to my home windows network) and for some reason it would not let me put a check in the box to allow that account to do so (from either Apple or my user accounts) and so I know that my main user account now is set up to allow it (was it the old Apple user account or a new one, I can't remember- sorry).
Ok, so that is the back story to my problem, which happens to be this:
I just bought a new chip of RAM (512MB to make it a machine with 576MB RAM total) and as I had been looking at getting OSX Tiger (but didn't want to do it without the extra ram and had been considering Panther instead as well), I thought it was necessary if I wanted to not bog down my machine. I bought the Install Disks on DVD for Panther, as well as an upgrade disk (DVD again) for Tiger, therefore letting me use the External Firewire DVD-RW to install Panther, and if I liked I could go ahead and upgrade to Tiger (and if I didn't like it too much, or it slowed things down too much etc, then I could always go back to panther and have both available for future options). The extra RAM coming in handy here definitely.
So I was going to install the RAM today, and decided to go ahead and test out the External DVD to make sure it could boot from it (before making any changes to my system) and then go and install the RAM, and after that, install Panther to start... But I plugged all the cords and cables in, used my laptop with AC power even, and I could not get the External to show up at all... (kinda like the very current post right below mine but for the G4- it worked before, but now the firewire External just does not show up).
I only have USB 1.1 on this laptop obviously, and I don't even know if you could do a boot from an external with USB 2.0 if my laptop had it (the DVD player does). I was recommended to boot with an external firewire DVD or firewire to another machine with DVD capabilities to do the install. So my problem right now is getting slightly bigger, as of course, I can't seem to momentarily find the stuff that came with the External (spare USB cable to check and see if the laptop will recognize it at least with that and to show it is the firewire that is not working properly, or the disk that I used to install it -might have been only used to install Toast free version if it didn't need any drivers, but I don't know where that or the instructions for installation sheet currently is -- I am looking for it, but I have switched bedrooms just last week and I also seem to be missing a few other Windows laptop disks as well so there is a good chance that they are all together, I just need to figure out where, heh.)
I am waiting currently before installing the memory, though if I don't get the External working tonight, I may go ahead and do it first as at least I will have more memory on my laptop then, until I can get other stuff functioning and be able to do the Panther install.
But my main question is, is there something that would cause an installed external to suddenly not show up in OSX? Since I hadn't used it since that one day, and it was unplugged from the laptop itself, would that end up doing it, or more likely, the changing of the user accounts (though I have been trying to test it with different types of media and through both of my user account (which are both "admin" ones), though I do still have one of those being an account that was on there when the External DVD was first installed, so it really shouldn't have done this at all (one would think). So how big of a chance is it that the firewire has somehow gone dead and this is the main culprit to my wasting the past 4 hours on this???
I am currently scavenging around for an extra USB cable to try and test the External that way and will post the results when I can... I love the look and idea of macs, now I have a mac and want to upgrade it even, but why is it that whenever I attempt to use it after having not used it for a bit (and try to make the iBook feel better by using it more as I am sure it feels sad and alone sitting on the shelf while my Windows Laptop gets more attention), or try to fix it when it can be made better (and therefore used more often), the mac (all macs really), just seem to get all pissy and cause problems and make me spend hours upon hours trying to get things to work again??? You have to admit it, I am "mac cursed"... sigh I can program in 4 or 5 computer languages and am very advanced at many tech things (the ones I am not as good at I am still usually Average or Medium skilled) so it makes me wonder why I have so many tech problems with Macs when they are supposed to be the "easy" OS to use...

Actually, I think I have it all working now. After going back to the Plextor Website, I found out that the switch between the USB and 1394 ports only gets activated (switched over to the other) with you turn the device off first, move the switch and then turn it back on. I was sure that I had done this with the ibook, but maybe not as when I went back and did it with first the USB and then the Firewire cables, it did work. I definitely knew that I had not done this with the Windows laptop, the reason it would not have the USB work for me on it.
but back to the iBook, I was confused as it was only showing up as a DVD-ROM (which I guess is what they do until you actually open up the burning software to then be able to burn to it), and it also had the wrong Model #, which after more research, showed that it was the Internal DVD drive model version (PX-708A) compared to the actual model version (PX-708UF) which is the USB/Firewire (External) model. The firmware was really out of date as well (from June 2004 I think, v1.06) and they had v1.12 from Spet/Oct 2006 available so I went to get that (which was a hassle). They had nice easy Windows self extractor/installer packs, and then the BIN files for use for all systems (Sun OS/ Mac OSX/ Mac OS/ Linux etc as well as usable for Windows), and those needed a special Firmware Updater Application which was OS specific. Only I had the hardest time trying to get the OSX one as it would send me to a FTP site and not give me any clues as to which file(s) I needed to get and the Mac OS version was just for older 9.2 or below versions and didn't want to install under the OS Classic mode.
I ended up using my windows computer which made it easier to view with the FTP stuff as I have FireFTP in Firefox, and downloaded the files I thought I needed (to test out), and then realized my silliness, and just downloaded (as well) the Windows Auto Extractor/Installer as the Firmware is the same for all OS's, just the way to install/update it was different... So I hooked the DVD drive to my PC and updated the firmware, checked it out on here before moving it back to the ibook, where I checked that it still worked and had the new update version showing, which it did, and now I have my fully working and newly updated drive ready for the OSX installations... I had attempted to update my Jaguar system as well while online, but it had no new updates available (I guess those were all mostly Tiger updates that were just recently released).
I am now off to install my additional RAM, and after checking that it all shows up correctly, I will go ahead and do the Panther Install (and test it out and see if I like it or not).
For anyone that currently uses Panther on any mac, are there still any major problems I should know about before hand, or know about things that they have mostly fixed (like the issues with Firewire ports and External Drives that they had around the time Panther was first released for example)???
Thanks to all that helped... I now know to attempt an "eject" of any external HD (which I do have one that I will setup to use after I get Panther on the ibook) or CD/DVD drive instead of just unplugging the USB/Firewire cable.
