Overclocking help--A64 3000

I know there are countless threads on this subject, but I'm gonna post this anyway, lol.
I have an Athlon 64 3000+ on MSI K8N Neo Platinum (BIOS 1.1).  I have 2x512 Mushkin Level One pc3500 in DIMMs 1 and 2.  I'd like to achieve an overclock of 2.3-2.4 if possible.  Right now the best I can get is about 2.2 but I haven't tweaked much.
Several questions:
should I set 1T or 2T
should I enable or disable Spread Spectrum
Should I change AGP frequency
what do you recommend for CPU voltage? I have a Thermaltake Venus 12 hsf
does lowering Hyper transport from 4x to 3x negate the effects of overclocking?
Any other advice would be helpful, as well.

1t will yield better performance.  2t might possibly give you a slightly better overclock.  Most people say it isnt worth the performance drop.
Disable Spread spectrum
Set AGP to 67
CPU Voltage could be set at 1.65v safely i've heard.  I dont think I would set it higher than 1.6v but i'm on stock cooling right now.
lowering hypertransport from 4x to 3x shouldnt be so bad... usually you wont have to until youre approaching about 240 HTT Frequency
I might suggest updating your bios to one of the later ones and maybe a beta one.  That is if you want to achieve high HTT frequencies.  ie greater than 230ish.

  • Overclocking A64 3000+

    Hey guys,
I got a n00b question about overclocking the A64 3000+.  Should I even think about doing this with the standard HSF?  I'm planning to use this machine for 2 years -- will overclocking destroy my machine before 2 years is up?
I can't be sure about my CPU temperatures right now coz I'm not 100% sure the K8N Neo Platinum temperature issues have been finalized yet, but under load, my HSF does not appear to be very hot...
    Please pardon my ignorance.
    Thanks in advance.

With standard HSF I wouldn't go more than 10% OC to be sure that the system will last... anyway 2200 MHz is not that bad after all

  • My A64 3000 @ 2.3Ghz 1:1 - Can you help me go further? :o)

Hello everyone. Just wondering if anyone can help me. I have hit a brick wall with my overclock but I hope I can push it a little bit further, since other people have started to have more success.
So far I have managed 230HT 1:1 thus reaching 2.3Ghz with my A64 3000 @ 1.6v. My ram is rated to run at 250HT max of 1.9v - so I hope I can go further.
    My spec is:
    MSI K8N Neo Platinum
    BIOS 1.25Beta
    Athlon 64 3000 Newcastle
    1gig GeIL PC4000 Ram
    ATI Radeon 9800 XT
I have shifted thru a lot of the threads on this forum but lack any kind of solid evidence or solutions. Also, I'm unsure as to what bios I should use. I have never had a temperature problem with my board so I'm looking for overclock stability only. I know it's a lot of trial and error, overclocking I mean, but any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks for reading.

Thanks alot for your answer... If I do that, will I get the CPU with 2.3 GHz ?
Or is there one more thing to do ??
you said : Set AGP lock to 68 ... Is this in Bios under : "Adjust AGP Frequency" ?
and you said : Increase HT speed setting to 230 ... Do you mean the part which is "Adjust CPU FSB Frequency" in the Bios ?
Is there anything more to do except this three options , like changing the HT Frequency which is already by default at 4x ? Or changing the RAM Clock or something like that ?
And if nothing more to do, is it necessary to change the MSI heatsink or install a Fan on the nVidia Chip instead of the MSI heatsink already installed ?
I am sorry that I ask all that , because I am ever afraid to burn any piece of my PC , and this is why I am asking you because you made it already without problem specially that you have the same CPU as mine , but the different is the Grafik Card .
    Thanks !

  • Help me out, hard time understanding ratios? formula?(a64 3000 +neo4)

    Specs are
    k8n neo4 plat
    a64 3000 venice
    2x1gb corsair xms 3200
    x800xl
    520 ocz powerstrem
can some one give me there settings in bios so i can try them out, i want to try something moddest, im aiming for 2.2ghz maybe 2.4,
I really want to learn how to overclock but reading these guides are really confusing me, there seems to be a formula or ratio to how you overclock,
but im not getting it, its like a math formula isnt it? its freezing up my brain
can some one break down how the ratio or formula is done in order to get the desired overclock?
i understand that all setups will vary even if they are similar and my results will derive from my particular hardware.
i also understand the best way to know what your particular setup can handle is by testing the different settings at a time using programs such as cpuz, memtest and prime95..
any one mind helping me out? i chose this cpu for the sole purpose of overclocking it even though iv never even read about how to do it      anyway thanks in advance.

The A64 boards only allow a few ratios, but lowering the memory speed to have tighter timings usually yields beter overall performance....
Value RAM usually has problems at the HTT's these A64 boards and CPU's can run at, but the "better" memory on the "right" board, can do cas2.5 at 300HTT....!
The typical ratios the 64 Bit BIOS allow are:
200 = 1:1 ratio with HTT and memory clock, so when HTT is 250 the memory clock will be 250
166 = 5:6 ratio, so when HTT is 250 the memory will be 208
133 = 2:3 ratio, so when HTT is 250 the memory will be 166
100 = 1:2 ratio, so when HTT is 250 the memory will be 125
    Auto = I'm 80% sure that Auto = 1:1 ratio too
Some boards express these ratios in percent...

  • Neo2-F/A64 3000+/Zalman showing 40C at idle in BIOS v1.9!!

My Neo2-F w/ A64 3000+ Venice arrived last night, along with some other parts (will list full specs below).  The BIOS version that it came with out-of-box is 1.9.
When I go to System Health in BIOS, it shows my CPU temp as ~40 degrees C!!  I don't think this is normal for a 3000+ that is not being overclocked, especially at idle.
I even went so far as to get a Zalman 7000AlCu for it, and used Arctic Silver 5 (I followed the instructions for application on their website (put a beebee sized drop in the center of CPU, and lower heatsink straight down, then screw in bolts).
I have to admit, I did mess up the first application of AS5 ... well, not the application itself, but it was my first time working with a Zalman.  So, when I tried to fasten the first bolt just a little bit as directed, the other side came popping up (too much leverage and I wasn't holding it firmly enough).  I have heard that this can cause air to introduced into the AS5 compound, so I pulled the HSF out and cleaned both surfaces thorougly with alcohol ... cleaned each surface multiple times, even after I could see no more AS5 residue coming off.
I am aware that this mistake compromised the efficiency of this setup a bit, but shouldn't the temps for a 3000+ be closer to 30 degrees C at idle, especially with AS5?
Perhaps it's just BIOS v1.9 that is returning incorrect temperature values?  What windows program can I use to check temps?
    -Thanks!

    My new 7000AlCu & AS5 is in a drawer...dont need them.
Try touching the very base of the hsf, closest to the cpu core as you can reach. BEFORE YOU DO IT, ground yourself by touching grounded metal objects.
Gives a clear indication if it's acceptable cool enough for YOU. I've had Abit AV8 mobo showing ~45C idle, next mobo was Asus A8V, showed pleasant 33C..current shows 27 and it's overclocked to 2,5GHz
I guess all temp readings are REAL CALCULATIONS, there is no real temp reader built-in...a BIOS matter.
Other things that add heat: RAM at high freq and voltage... SATA HDD's generate LOTS heat...bro's hdd got errors due to overheating, he didnt use fans blowing over the HDD...all that warm air makes cpu/case warmer ofcourse. You gotta have airflow in your chasse.
When/if you re-attach your HSF again, take a close look at the paste stuck on the hsf. I had "clear" spots (no contact between cpu core & hsf...paste doing no good) on ~40% of the core area....also I never trust AS5 again (or the boxed paste)...
Use Zalman's + some AS5: The two first times I re-mounted the hsfs (boxed and 7000AlCu) they were STUCK very hard to the core. Happened with alcu@as5 and boxed@boxed paste + boxed@as5. I've read "many" ppl ripping their cpu off the socket when trying to pull the hsf off...it got glued..solution=do it with warm pc).

  • Low CPU mark score with a64 3000+

I get around 650 to 680 cpu mark score with my system:
    MSI Neo Plat
    1Gig of PC3200 KINGSTON Ram
    A64 3000+ @ 2ghz
    Leadtek 6800
I've updated the latest nforce drivers from MSI and the bios is 1.2
I think it's way to low since I had 300 cpu mark score with my lousy Athlon 1.4Ghz thunderbird.
I see that other a64 3000+ users get around 800 to 950 cpu mark score. Why is mine too low? Bios settings? What should I check?
I see even a MSI Kt800 user with 840 cpu score!

Could you please post a link for the software benchmark that you are referring to?  I can't seem to find the right one.  I got something called CPUMark but it is scoring mine at like 3400 which isn't in the correct range based on what you've said so it's probably a different software.  Thanks for your help.  I just want to see where mine falls out.

  • Msi Neo Plat & A64 3000

    Hi guys
Well finally after a few months of waiting ive got rid of my stock A64 cooler and had chance to fiidle with some overclocking i really would like some advise on my recent overclcock perhaps some of you guys know where i might be able to tweak my system alittle bit here's the details
    System
    A64 3000+
    MSI Neo Plat
    2 X 512mb Crucial Ballistix PC4000
    Radeon x800 pro Vivo
    Hiper 450w PSU
    60gig seagate IDE HDD
    80gig seagate SATA HDD
    Cooling
    Thermalright SLK-978u
    Artic Cooling rev4
so far i have reached this
    FSB 235 x 10 @ 1.65v mem @ 2.5,3,3,10 @ 1.70v
    temps are around 39
    3DMark 2001 = 23766
    3DMark 2003 = Havent try'd yet :p
So are my mem timings good ive try'd higher FSB but couldn't seem to get it without upping my volts,  im thinking that it might be my memory settings holding me back but not really sure
    Cheers for reading

Second double sided dimm in the 7030's seem to really give it headaches.  WILL NOT run @ 1:1 no matter what I do.  Automatically defaults it to 166 divider no matter what slots or bios settings I try.  I managed to get them to run @ 200 by OC'ing to 240fsb but even then I had to use way worse timings than they would do by themselves.  OCZ is the only manufacturer I have found that makes a 1 Gig stick that runs at the same timings as their 512 Mb sticks.  When I get one of those babies I'll really be able to see what this thing will do @ 1:1.  Probaly only get to 220 or so with pc3200 but doing it @ 1:1 with good timings will be sweet!

  • Is there any way to overclock an A64 by adjusting the multiplier?

Is there any way to overclock an A64 by adjusting the multiplier?
    I have an Athlon64 3200+ (Socket 754) and a MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R.
Seems to be a sweet overclocker, but my RAM cannot run at much more than the normal 200 (400) MHz, so FSB overclocking is no good for me.
    /Salmoneus

hmm the a64 is locked so you cannot use a cpu multipier to have only cpu go faster..
i oc with the fsb....but noticed that i may actually be over running my power, at high oc's(233)  if i unplug at least 3 hard drives, and some fans it will run microsofts memmory tester...but not with them in.
you may be able to oc if you drop your mem speed down in bios to 333 or 200.
so when you oc the memm will clib from there...i have seen good results from that.
one person was able to catch my 232 results from dropping down to 200 mem speeds.

  • Best settings for overclocking this A64

i dont seem to be having much luck with my set up
i got my watercooling set up the other day so now i feel like pushing it (just trying to ignore this damn useless corecentres readings though)
anyways 2.4ghz is the stock and i dont know whats the best settings i can have to get this as high as possible
the ram did 235fsb @ 2.7v and its lifetime warranty up to 2.9 so i dont mind pushin that
as for the cpu i dont know whats a safe Vcore with watercooling?
i tried 220x12 with the ram @ 2.7v and the cpu at 1.65v (its the highest ive chanced so far)
and although it posted fine and ran 3dmark01 fine (even though i didnt seem to get any increase in score  ) when i tried 3dmark03 it started loading the first demo then just closed the program
so ..can any of you overclocking pros help me out here, there seems to be a lot of options to change with an A64 and i really wanna do this so i can get my moneys worth from what i spent on my WC kit

also...can someone pleeeaaaseee help me with OC'ing
i had another go earlier, i managed to get 11.5*225 (2587) to post and run stable and whatever, but it seems NOTHING else i tried would work above about 2450
its either BSOD or some strange black screens..or just nothing
why wont it do more..even with my dodgy well over the top temps, they dont see 45 running prime95
    i want to overclock!

  • Cant get decent overclock on Venice 3000, no matter what settings I use

I re-visited my overclocking on the Venice 3000 chip and still have very odd problem that no amount of fiddling seems to cure.
Yes, I have read many faqs, some quite good actually, so I think I know the score.
Now, this is the weird thing.
Right now, as we speak, I am running :
MSI Neo 4 Plat ver 1.D bios
    Corsair Twinx Plat 2X512 (3200)
Antec 380w PSU w/24A on the 12v rail. System is not loaded at all, so this SHOULD not be the issue
    6600GT video card
I have a nice 100% stable overclock at 235 mhz AND the memory running at 2.5 3,3,8 at 235 mhz!!, so that part is quite good. cpu volts at 1.425 a slight bump, and everything else stock voltage.
But that gives me only 2116 cpu, which is quite lame given that EVERYONE seems to get 2400  or MORE out of the Venice core.
I've had this up to 2200 or so, but basically as soon as the cpu clock gets over 255 mhz or so, I get instant lockup. (using ClockGen from within windows to test).
Of course , I  test this with a 166mhz memory divider, so memory was never going above 208 mhz or so during this testing. If it can do 235, that should not be whats causing the freezing. Unless its more stable at the 1:1 ration than a divider (anyone know is thats possible?).
Heat is not an issue. Runs very cool. 32-33 C even under a load.
I have noticed 'fluctuating' voltage ( .05 v diff) but I suspect its the built in measuring of the mb , but who knows.
I've tried cpu voltage up to 1.55 , 3 HTT, running the multi at 8x instead of the normal 9x, no change, cpu  locks up instantly above 255. no blue screen, just freeze.
Maybe I got a bum chip, been using it for over a year.
This board is more than capable of a high overclock, as far as I can tell by postings.
Anyone have a clue as to why this would not go faster??

you may just have a bad core.. it happens. just because others get high overclocks in no way guarantees you - or anyone else - will achieve those speeds. processors are binned and sold at speed grades thay have been tested at and are guaranteed to work at. sounds harsh i know but you bought a 3000+ and it works as a 3000+ if you get a decent overclock out of it thats a bonus and a bargain
anyway good luck in your endeavours hopfully its something other than the processor holding you back but bear in mind that your processor simply may not clock any higher

  • P67A-GD65 Overclocking Help!

Hey everyone - I'm new to the forums and fairly new to overclocking in general, although I understand the basics of it... I've run into a snag, though.
Recently I was redoing my desktop (Intel i5 2500k, MSI P67A-GD65, 16GB DDR3 1600 RAM, yada yada) and decided to update the BIOs, something I hadn't thought of doing since I built the PC over a year and a half ago... So, I updated from 1.9 (I think... it was 1.something) to the latest 4.3, and did a reformat on the HDDs and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit... So I'm from scratch. I go into the BIOs to tweak the CPU and all, but I can't adjust anything at all. It's all stuck on "AUTO". I can't make the adjustments I need to make to overclock the CPU... I've read through several tutorials and threads on more forums than I care to admit, and my head is starting to hurt from (1) reading so much and (2) banging my head into the desk over this... Am I missing something? I've read that 4.3 has had some issues when it comes to OC'ing... What should I do? I can grab screenshots or more specs if needed. Thanks for the help in advance - I definitely appreciate it!

Have you tried a full CMOS clear? PSU power cord removed, battery removed, and then a settings reset? My favorite UEFI/BIOS was the v1.C and the v1.H (2700k support). If you want, it is possible to revert back to a Sandy UEFI/BIOS on the primary BIOS chip. An admin or mod can give you the necessary files and information on how to do it.
    After the Ivy flash, did you also load the new Management Engine driver required? Also with a fresh OS, newest chipset driver installed, etc.? Here's the link to the MSI Website for your board and all the drivers;
    http://msi.com/product/mb/P67A-GD65--B3-.html
I did a CMOS reset with the "Reset CMOS" button on the motherboard... After I did that and restarted the PC, a message came up informing me that the CMOS had been restored to default settings and asked if I wanted to go into setup or boot as normal... I can pop the battery and PSU cable out if needed... At this point, I'd be perfectly happy reverting back to a Sandy Bridge friendly BIOS, lol...
I did install the new drivers after flashing the new BIOS, by the way. Followed all the instructions in the link you posted.

Yes, when it isn't necessary to do "increases in all things".

Im not very confident with doing the ioh mod but im getting 90 degrees with no overclock
The addition of a fan to direct air flow at the IOH, will reduce the temp. The Antec Spot Cool works well for this. Aftermarket CPU coolers have taken away the engineered passive air flow the stock cooler provides (presuming you are not using the stock cooler). 90c is in spec, so RMA solely upon that is doubtful. Again, when time permits, include what OC goals you are looking for as well. Most OC'ing takes time, patience, & trial & error.

  • BIOS Overclocking, help please!

Hi people! I readed days ago a post where an user wrote a key combination to make this:
Lets supose that you are overclocking and you go too far, so the machine won't boot and you will have to reset BIOS.
This key combination allows you to enter BIOS when this happens, without losing any changes of the o'clocking!!! Awesome!
(I hate going too far and reset the BIOS and make all the settings again and again)
Any1 remembers the key combination??? I can't remember it and I can't find the post again! :(:(
It was something like Shift + F6...
Thanks! Help would be very apreciated! And like I say everytime, sorry for my english!!!
