Overclocking issue with P7N SLI

Hey guys, first time I've posted since I got my board, because I have had zero issues with it.  But that, unfortunately, was at stock settings.  The minute i overclocked the board, I loved its stability.  A Q6600 to 3.0 GHZ on stock voltage and auto everything!  However, I have run into a problem...
When I boot up with a 1420 FSB, I get a clock speed of 3.19GHZ in the POST info, and it loads windows (Vista 32bit) instantly, no problems.  However, all of my applications (CPUZ, windows system properties,, etc) show me at 3.0GHZ still.  I have run benchmarks between 3.0 and 3.2 and I see no variation in points, at all.  I'm booting into windows fine with is overclock, but windows is not accepting and applying it!
Any info that anyone can give would be much appreciated.  FYI, I am running the current 2.1 bios from this site, actually the board came with said bios installed.  Thanking you all in advance...

OK guys, just a little update.  My OC is now showing up in Windows and is now making a difference in my benchmark scores.  All I had to do was drop the multi to 8 and then up the fsb to 1600 (for 3.2 ghz) and it booted normally.  It's passed prime for 8 hours now, so I have no reason to believe its not stable.
Still not sure why my OC wouldn't work in windows until I dropped my multi tho, any suggestions?
Only thing I can guess is that the OC wasn't stable at that fsb (fsb hole), resulting in a failed OC.  After dropping the multi, I added some Vcore and upped the FSB voltage a bit, and voila!
Headed for 3.4 GHZ tonight =D

  • Overclocking issue with X99S SLI board

I just put together my system with an X99S SLI Plus MB, and i7 5820K CPU.
If I use the OC Genie, it will clock my CPU at 3.8Ghz (38x100).
However, If I turn off the Genie and trying manual overclocking, it will not allow me to modify the CPU ratio, locking it at 3.3Ghx (33x100).
It says that the multiplier can only be modified with a CPU that allows it.
I have a "K" processor, and OC Genie changes the CPU ratio when active, so I am not sure why I cannot change it manually.
    Am I missing something?
    System Specs:
    X99S SLI Plus MB
    Core i7 5820K CPU
    Kingston Hyper-X DDR4, 2666

The BIOS version is: E7885IMS V1.7(170)

Somebody had luck to overclock Q9300 on P7N-SLI Platinum ? please post info

Try with mem settings auto and only adjust Vdimm to vendorspecs.
Did you try BIOS V1.1 from MSI : http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1373
This did solve some memory issues.
If so try, if you can, QVL memory and see if problem persists.
Hope this helps  , good luck and keep us posted
Also be sure that your on manual and not linked, this will give problems too, when fsb divider gets higher then memory divider.
Furthermore, by using non qvl mem, the NB and fsb vtt are very depending on eachother.
I had the same with my board  , the only difference with yours is the cirque pipe cooling and an extra chip for yorkfield support  , but it is do-able

    Overclocking issues with Neo2 Platinum

    hiya nocturnal
1st in Integrated Peripherals / IDE Function Setup....disable sata1/sata2 dma transfer and enable sata3/sata4 dma transfer...sata 3 is top on left side of board one closest to cpu.
2nd ... Cell Menu / DRAM configuration  is where you set memory timing 1T/2T
3rd...Cell Menu / AGP Frequency ..set it to 67
just My 2 cents but why don't you take Everything back to stock (cpu & vid card) , Do the above and see if it will boot. the biggest problem you have (my opinion) is your memory...you do not state if it is pc3200/400 ...if it is go 200 Max Memclock (step 2, 1st option)
set the CAS  settings to stock..see if you can boot to windows, then and only then go Play   as in see what your sandie will do with that memory..Leave your vid card stock until you get a stable windows enviorment...also if you do shift F2 ..alt F3 it opens up other settings within our bios
I believe you will be upgrading your memory real soon if ya got the o/c bug
    Hope this helps
ps...by the way what type of power supply do you have ?

  • Can't overclock past 1333.33 FSB with P7N SLI Platinum [FIXED]

I was told it was an FSB hole but it doesn't seem like one anymore. I tried two different amounts, 1440 and 1500 FSB and changes the voltages accordingly (obviously). I can boot up to the operating system and everything but when I open up CPU-Z and other programs my FSB is at 1333.33. The BIOS doesn't tell me this however. Why isn't it working?

polishedcar are you overclocking in bios ?
where are you getting stuck at with your fsb ?
what are your voltages at for your current overclock ?
Yes, I'm overclocking in BIOS. Not quite sure what you mean by your second part, but basically I can up to 1333.33 FSB and then after that if I boot up it still reads as 1333.33 FSB, but the BIOS says the correct FSB that I overclocked to. I reverted back to 1333.33 FSB (3GHz with Q6600) for now so I don't have the voltages for the higher overclocks, 3GHz runs fine and stable though.
    I don't think it's software and I'm 90% sure EIST is disabled.
EDIT: I seemed to have fixed it! I disabled "Spread Spectrum" and it worked! As a test, I tried 1350 FSB and CPU-Z reads it correctly.

    Hi there,
The CPU multiplier is indeed locked at 9 (at least it won't go any higher).  As you mentioned, the cpu clock is your FSB X multiplier.  In your case, 333X9.
So, when one cannot change the multiplier, we instead change the bus speed.   You need to increase the FSB speed.  Beware that this will also change your memory speed, so depending on the ram spec and fsb:ram ratio, it may be running overclocked.
Generally you can achieve a small overclock by merely adjusting the FSB.  To get a larger, stable overclock you will inevitably need to increase your voltages.  There are a few guides on how to do this stickied in this forum.   I recommend reading them and doing some research before you start any voltage changes.

  • Overclocking with P7N SLI Platinum and Q6600

Right now, it's "somewhat" stable at 3.6 GHz.
    Here are my voltages:
    CPU 1.4v
    Memory 2.0v
    FSB VTT 1.4v
    NB 1.4v
After about 20 minutes in Vista and doing superPI I get a BSOD.
Can anyone tell me what I should raise for it to be completely stable?
By the way, I get 57 C under full load.
EDIT: I raised my CPU voltage, FSB, and NB voltage up one step. Has been running for an hour now and have run SuperPI various times and 3DMark06. I don't particularly like Prime95/Orthos but I may try it later.
Max temperature - 62C (one core, others 58C)
    Idle - 48C

Quote from: polishedcar on 16-March-08, 03:39:19
    Update:
Seems completely stable with these voltages
    1.44 CPU
    1.450 FSB VTT
    1.44 NB
    Temperatures are about the same
    48 Idle
    60ish Under full load
How long do you guys think this CPU will last me at these temps? Should I be concerned about anything? Also, I scored 17,676 in 3DMark06.
Run Prime95 ver 25+ on small ffts for about 20 mins and watch your temps. (a "true" full load on all 4 cores) If you stay under 65c on that the chip will be fine 24/7 (but to be honest I don't think your gonna be close to low 60s under a real full load with a 48c idle)

And for the record if you guys accually knew how to overclock my cpu with my mobo then u would have just told me with no problems but instead u have wasted about 3 days of my time waiting for usuful reply and help from a decent person ! good job.
Ill figure it out myself as iv already gotten it 3.0 stable with reading only what other ppl used on there bios with short amount of trial and error.
Wow.  Some people just really don't get it...
We all know how to overclock CPUs, of course.  Why are you biting the hand of the arm trying to help you?  I used the P7N Diamond for several months, and also provided a lot of the overclocking tips and hints, along with every beta/performance BIOS MSI released.
If you want me to do the overclocking for you, and rid you of the experience; hell, I have no problem with that.  The P7N is a simple board to overclock until the NB gets too hot.  Max out the FSB term, don't touch the GTL voltages, and adjust the CPU Vcore only when needed.  If you cannot follow anything I said in the last sentence - go back to stock settings.
Do you even know how to stability test an overclocked system?
If you don't want to learn, you're most likely not going to get beyond 3.2 GHz.

  • Overclocking issue with a Z68A-G43 MB and 4*2 GB DDR3 Gskill memory kits

    Hi,
On my old MB, I overclocked my I5 2500k CPU to 4.2 Ghz , It was running with 4*2GB DDR3 modules and everything was stable since several months.
I use the same components on my new Z68A-G43 MB but I don't manage to start my PC in the same conditions.
The PC runs well in normal mode (not OC ) with the 4x2GB DDR3 modules
The PC runs well when overclocked to 4.2 Ghz (and it is very stable) with 2*2 GB GSkill DDR3 (1600 MHz CAS 7, reference - F3-12800CL7 2GBECO) modules placed in DIMM 1 & 3
    But, when overclocked, the PC refuses to boot with 4*2GB DDR3 modules, after adding 2x2 GB GSkill DDR3 (1600 MHz CAS 8 , F3- reference - 12800CL8 2GBRM ) modules placed in DIMM 2 & 4
    Same problem with 2x2 GB KINGSTON DDR3 (1600 MHz CAS 9, reference 99005403 - 125.A01LF ) modules placed in DIMM 2 & 4
I tried the most of the recommended settings in the overclocking forum: OC genie enabled or not , XMP enabled or not , timings manually set according to information given by CPUZ , decreasing the frequency of the DDR3 to 1333 Mhz...
In summary, my PC refuses to boot due to a memory issue (3 beeps at launch) when I put 4*2GB of DDR3 with a 4.2 Ghz OC (whereas it was running fine for months on my old motherboard P67A- GD65 ).
The PC runs fine with 4*2GB of DDR3 without OC or with only 2*2GB of DDR3 with a 4.2 Ghz OC.
Do you have any idea how to solve this problem ?
    thank you for your advice

Yes. Get a factory matched and tested together RAM kit. Corsair work well on this series mainboard. That or try to increase the DRAM V. to 1.65v's, loosen the timings for all sticks to 9 9 9 24, CR 2. Good luck!

    1. make sure you enable LAN in the BIOS
    2. make sure the LAN driver is properly installed in the BIOS
    3. make sure your cable modem can detect your LAN - did you implement MAC address filtering? set the LAN speed to be detectable by the cable modem, ie 10Mbps?
    1. The onboard LAN controller is enabled in BIOS
    2. Not sure how to go about doing this exactly.
    3. MAC address filtering is only enabled for wireless connections and it seems that the router is "seeing" the system. I have connected directly to the modem as well to no avail. I'm not sure how to set the LAN speed to be detectable to the cable modem.
"Check your network speed and try not to use Auto negotiation. Try setting it to 100Mbps full duplex, or 10Mbps full and see how it goes."
Where would I be able to adjust these settings exactly? Thanks for the help so far!

  • PLEASE HELP! Restarting issue with K8N SLI. need bios help???

      Hi people,
I would really appreciate some help this this problem im having. It’s a bit long winded but ill try to keep it short.
My pcs spec is as follows –
MSI K8N SLI (model MS-7185) motherboard
    AMD Athlon X2 64bit 4200+ cpu
    4 x 512mb ram
Running with a Radeon X700 256mb graphics card.
Ever since I purchased the machine ive been having problems with the pc loading up XP (or any OS for that matter!). Sometimes it would freeze on the loading screen and sometimes it would freeze on the black screen just after the loading screen.  Sometimes while running windows perfectly normally, a blue screen with writing describing the error came up and then the system restarted, however, I would only ever manage to read the title of the blue screen as the pc restarted so quickly. I remember seeing the word hardware though,  so I guessed it was a serious hardware issue. I lived with this for a few months thinking it might be something im doing that’s making it be so unreliable, such as a software issue, but I recently went on a mission to sort it out. The BIOS of the motherboard was password protected and I wasn’t aware of this until I had lost contact with who I had bought the system off, so I decided to restart the motherboard’s settings by pressing the reset button on the board itself. Next time I booted it up it told me that the defaults were restored etc and continued to boot windows, however now I can hardly get windows to start at all, the system restarts on the loading screen 8 times out of 10, and if it does boot up fully then it doesn’t last long before crashing on me. I messed about with a few of the BIOS settings, but to be honest I have no experience with working with these settings, its all very new to me. I have an idea  that it could be the processor or the graphics card causing the problem, just an inkling though!
If anyone can help me I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you. Adam

  • Overclocking issues with p67a-g45

I am unable to get a decent manual overclock with this board. The OC GENIE overclock is about the best stable OC I can get which is only 4.2ghz and this processor should reach much higher. Anyways here are my specs:
    i7-2700k
    2 x 4gb G Skill 1866 9-10-9-28
    Gigabyte HD6850 OC
    2 x Vertex 3 SSDs in raid 0

    P67A-G45 Mobo
I've got the newest version of the Bios-5.3 which I've been unable to find much documentation or guides for. Any help would be appreciated!

Basing on experience, the latest bios are only best used when running Ivy Bridge cpu.  With my i5 2500K before, I didn't have any issues overclocking it at 4.3ghz [Auto V] using official 1.J0 Bios until I upgraded to 4.xx bios.  I couldn't overclock it at all.  I went back to Bios 1.J0, problem solved.  Since your using Sandy Bridge cpu, I suggest you do the same.  I am using P67a-GD65 which is simply an older brother of your board.
Btw, my settings when I was running i5 2500K.  Hope it helps, good luck!

  • 870A-G54 overclocking issue with new bios 17.D

I have my config in my signature. Flashing this new BIOS 17.D made my motherboard impossible for overclocking what is sad. No matter how I try the frequency won't go more than default. Computer just doesn't start. So I had to roll back to BIOS 17.10.
But at least RAM was detected fine so I had all my 8gb.
I wish MSI will make a new and better update with AM+3 suppport, full ram and overclocking possibilities. Because version 17.D is no go for sure.
