Overclocking problem with P965 NEO

Hi, i actually have a problem with cpu and memory.
my settings are:
MSI P965 NEO
2x 1Gb Gskill DDR2 800Mhz 4-4-3-5 2.0v
Core2duo e6300
zalman 9500CPN
i  want to overclock the micro, and set the ram to the proper timigns, if i set all to auto, and the FSB to 300Mhz, the ddr speed raises to 473Mhz, and it's not what i like, i just want to reach a 1:1 FSB ratio and increase only cpu FSB not RAM fsb.
Here i dont have the FSB:DRAM ratio, like i used to have in my asus.
Ok, going to the point, i want to know how to increase cpu fsb and not the ram mhz. and also put the ram to the full spec.
the ram is at AUTO and the speed manually to 667 because the problems i found with CPU-Z.
The SPD reports 400Mhz, 4-4-3-5-24(trc)-2T
Thanks,
Ariel

i want to overclock the cpu without overclocking the ram, is that possible with this motherboard??
for example: 333Mhz cpu and stay at 800Mhz for ram
the cpuz is reading actually 379 (i cant remember the exact value, but is around this) for ram when i have set to manual 667 why this happen??? (the cpu is at 300)
The memory speeds you can select are not absolute but FSB:RAM dividers
533Mhz equals the 1:1 divider
667Mhz equals the 4:5 divider
800Mhz equals the 2:3 divider
This means if you select 667Mhz RAM in bios you don't force 667Mhz but you select a FSB:RAM ratio of 4:5
At stock FSB of 266Mhz this makes : 266 / 4 = 66.5 * 5 = 333 Mhz (666 Mhz DDR) wich is the 667Mhz you select.
However, if you change FSB the RAM speed changes along with it.
So, for your 300Mhz this makes :  300 / 4 = 75 * 5 = 375 Mhz  wich is +- the 379 Mhz cpuZ reads.
If you want 333Mhz fsb and ram @ 800 select 667Mhz RAM in bios and set FSB to 333Mhz, also enter RAM timings manually.
This will result in 333 / 4 = 83.25 * 5 = 416 Mhz (832 Mhz DDR) for ram - The gskill should be able to take this mild 32Mhz overclock.
The board might not make it to 333Mhz tho - It's a budget board wich overclocks poorly.

  • Problems with P965 Neo and E4500 Core 2 Duo

    Hope someone can help.
I have a gadget for Vista that shows core usage. The second core does not register at all when running a performance test. Also, when I look under "My Computer" at the Properties it shows:
    Processor:    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU   E4500 @ 2.20GHz  1.10GHz
Also, my Windows Experience Index for my processor is only 4.3, seems low for the processor.
Makes me wonder if the second core is toast? Why would it show 1.10GHz? Looking at my BIOS version, I believe it's at 1.5 (I've never updated it since it came out of the package) but the Live Update Online utility says there are no newer versions available. I tried to download the BIOS update off MSI's website, but when I click on the .exe file, it flashes and then goes away. So fast, that I can't even read or see much of anything. The instructions that were included do not cover Vista, and say I have to get a 98/XP boot disk??? When has that ever been necessary for a BIOS update?
Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum!
    BIOS-Updates
BIOS Updates should be done in pure DOS mode.  Flashing from a Windows Environment is very risky and should be avoided if possible.  Flash your BIOS only if you are aware of the risks of BIOS Flashing.  Updating the BIOS should be the last resort in troubleshooting.  If you are sure you want to flash a different BIOS use the Forum's USB-Flashing.  It is easy to use and prepares the Flash Drive automatically for a DOS-Flash.  You can find it here:

Is your CPU properly recognized in BIOS and during POST?
In BIOS, make sure the following options are properly set:
    ACPI = Enabled
    (IO)APIC = Enabled
    MPS Table Version = 1.4
If you are sure these options are as shown above, force Vista to re-detect proper HAL during startup.  You have to find Vista's Advanced Boot Options dialog box in order to do that:

  • Problem with repaired neo fis2r

I am experiencing performance problems with my neo tha t I am not sure where to begin trouble shooting. I had an video card falure(delaminated pin on agp ) which resulted in damage to the agp slot I rma 'd my neo and it returned marked repaired with a grey agp slot , bios 1.4 ( had 1.6 installed) and the same serial #. I reinstalled all components. noted the retrograde bios and flashed to 1.8. then I attempted to return all settings to theyre original state only to find that I can't overclock! previously I got 250mhz clock with perf mode set to ultra turbo and ram set to 333mhz . now I can't get past perf mode fast and 205mhz no matter what. I see references to bios 1.8 as being not very overclockable.this may be the problem but  the waters have been muddied by the multitude of events. I am not an expert and do not know where to start. I was so thrilled with the performance of my neo and now I am at a loss . Is the bios responsible for this abysmal performance or is my system still compromised? I don't know what to do to determine its state. my system is as follows:-
    neo fis2r( of course)
    2.4c p4 with zalman alcu 7000
    ati 8500dv
    512mb samsung 400mhz ram
seagate barracuda sata 150 raid 0
    pci modem card
    thermaltake xaser2 case
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
    kev

essentially I am not just concerned about it's current inability to overclock. but more in the fact that b4 the repiar of the board I was able to overclock with no difficulty and no special considerations. in fact when I look at my little log of bios settings the agp clock was set at 66.6/33.3 after all the overclocking. and now with EXACTLY the same components( ati card repalced but physically identical)  none of those same settings work. did the failure damage other components whose failure is not yet critical path or has the bios upgrade caused instability?

  • Benchmarks: Dynamic Overclocking on the P965 Neo-F is a big lie!

I've just upgraded to the 1.5 BIOS and decided to run some benchmarks. What I found was interesting, so I thought I'd share:
I set the DOC function to General, which should give a 15% boost to the FSB when the processor is under heavy load. I wanted to see how much that will improve CPU performance compared to when DOC is disableled.
To test I transcoded an album from the lossless APE format to mp3 using Monkey's Audio and Lame 3.96. I chose this software because it reliably maxes out both of my cores, since Monkey's Audio can be set to do two separate encoding tasks simultaneously: one on each core. Lame itself is assembler optimized to use the processor's fancy vector extensions, ensuring a really maximal CPU load. The command line options I used in Lame are: -V 2 -q 0 --lowpass 19.4 --cwlimit 10.7 --scale 0.99 -mj -b96
Here are the results for my system (E6300, P965 Neo-F BIOS 1.5, GeForce 7600GT):
    Standard FSB Clock (266 MHz)
    DOC: Disabeled
            10:35.17 min
    Standard FSB Clock (266 MHz)
    DOC: General
            12:01.45 min
    Slight FSB Overclock (280 MHz)
    DOC: Disabeled
            10:05.15 min
    Slight FSB Overclock (280 MHz)
    DOC: General
            10:05.39 min
To confirm these results I ran 3DMark05 at the default settings with the FSB set at 280. My scores: 5637 with DOC disabeled, 5628 with DOC on General (+15%).
In other words, Dynamic Overclocking on the P965 Neo-F is hopelessly broken. It doesn't actually improve performance and sometimes it seriously damages it! Can anyone confirm that this is so?

    My test results:
Dynamic Overclocking actually UNDERCLOCKS your CPU under load!
But it's more copmlicated still: I just did a lot of testing on my E6300 / Neo-F and here are my numbers:

The most shocking thing about the numbers is that at 266FSB, DOC actually underclocks your CPU just when you need it most. This also beautifully explains the performance results I got above. But if you look carefully, DOC seems to work just as it's supposed to when you bump the FSB to 267. Higher than that, though, I haven't found a frequency at which it works correctly. Generally, it underclocks, and underclocks more the lower the "rank" is that you choose. The exception to this is 333, where DOC seems to neither overclock nor underclock.

problem with PT8 NEO Y VGA ATI SAPHIRE 9250SE

From the VGA test report: http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/testreport_pdf/6799/vga.pdf for the board , i can't find ATI Radeon 9250SE , but it is obvious that MSI only tested their Nvidia cards and no ATI cards. So, you'd better to try Nvidia cards or contact your VGA vendor to ask if there is the latest VGA BIOS to solve your issue.
Anyway, remember to tell us the results .

Overclocking Problems on K8N Neo Plat

As I had said that even when HTT is set 200 and memory divider used is 1:1 on my Corsair XMS (which was plugged in in my nF4 SLi mobo and has TCCD Ram chips) which is rated 2-2-2-5 at 200Mhz DDR and processor at stock speeds and voltage, memtest shows errors and system doesn't boots in windows.
Also my Ram sticks are rated 2.60V but when Vdimm set at auto Motherboard pumps 2.70V !! what's the problem , I use version 1.7 BIOS on my MSI K8N Neo Platinum
Is that going to harm my RAM

  • Overclocking E4300 using P965 NEO

Hi Fellas. Finally, got this system running and here are my experiences, so far:
    1) This board is soooo limited, the maximum FSB which is there in the BIOS is 265MHz.
    2) No TRUE 1:1 FSB/RAM ratio because the lowest RAM speed it supports is 266MHz while the CPU is stuck at 200MHz (800 strap).
Managed an overclock of 250MHz so far (2.25GHz haven't tried more).
The best part is that I was able to O/C HIGHER on an INTEL (946GZIS) board where I got this chip to 2.4GHz using Clockgen! haha can you beat that? I hope they can do something with the BIOS, otherwise this is sucky-sucky. I hope MSI realizes that the E4300 is one of THE best chips to overclock and that this board doesn't do it much justice.
In the meantime, would appreciate it if others using a similar configuration could share their experiences too.
    Thanks.

I too bought an e4300 together with a P965 Neo. Same results here: absolute limit of 250mhz FSB.
So I mailed MSI support.. and they sent me a bios update: the still unreleased 1.7. So I flashed the bios, hoping it would fix the problem.
But no. Nothing. Not even a minor change. I guess they haven't fixed the strap issue that EagleDM is talking about.
So I went back to the store, and found out that changing my MoBo is difficult and costly. Has to do with vista or something. I'm no expert.
To tell you the truth... I might even consider changing it anyway. I've read reviews of ppl overclocking the e4300 past 3ghz. And I'm stuck at 2.2. Even with my brand new Zalman CNSP9500 cooler, which I regret buying now. Stressed CPU temps below 40c are not exactly optimal imho.
So don't get your hopes up for the 1.7 bios upgrade, guys. I'm very sorry to have to tell you this.
*edit* Mmm by upping some voltages (RAM) I was able to get past the wall of 250. got it to 265mhz fsb now. Orthos has been running for some time now on blended test.. I have no idea wether or not it was the update, or my own noobness. Anyway, I'm not even gonna try getting past 265 now. I'm way to happy for another bios reset. I guess you guys just have to bug MSI for 1.7 and try it out yourselves :-)

  • Weird problem with k8n neo fsr

    hello!
i have weird problem with my K8N Neo-fsr and Athlon 64 2800+ socket 754, when i try to overclock i change in bios HT from 4 to 3 (for better stability), after restart nothing happen, my pc wont boot, also nothing on screen, so i must clear cmos for solve my problem and set to 4   i try several bioses from official to moded also pinochio`s and syar`s moded and allways the same issue    is it problem with processor? or motherboard?
thanx for your help and sorry for my english

You should first get down cpu ratio, then get up cpu fsb and as you wanted set ht frequency from 4 to 3 and "save changes and exit" if it doesn't boot change you psu (at least antec 380 or tagan) or go fast to send back your mobo to reseller!!

  • Going on week FOUR of problems with MSI NEO-2-S :/

Mainboard: MSI Neo2-S, BIOS Rev. 1.5x (whatever Live Update sent me)
    RAM: GeiL 1GB (512x2) PC-3500 Matched pairs
    CPU: P4-2.4c
    HD: WD 1200JB Special edition
Cooling: Stock intel, lapped @ 800 grit
    PSU: 450W
    Video: MSI Geforce 4 TI-4200 64MB
O/S: Windows XP Pro SP1A, IE 6.x latest security patches
    DX: Direct-X 9b
    BIOS setting: Slow
Overclocking: No, system will not even run stable at rated speeds.
    Problem:
System just shuts itself down in the middle of gaming.
CPU temperature has a wide range, depending on how cool the night is and if I have my windows open etc the system can be as low as 40c. Under load while gaming I've seen it go to between 59c-62c.
I've gone into Core Center and turned off the dynamic overclocking so it doesn't adjust speed in the middle of playing games, thinking that might be causing issues.
I've also cranked the fans up all the way in Core Center to increase cooling.
Heck I've even turned Core Center OFF thinking it was messing with my system.
No antivirus is running in the background while I'm gaming. I've fresh installed XP Pro. I've re-applied service packs.
I'm worried about the temperature but I don't necessarily know for certain the sudden shutdowns are a cooling issue.
I am going on week FOUR of problems with this new system. I have never purchased an MSI mainboard and seriously, I have just flat out had it. I've already been through one RMA'd board, I am not RMAing another. I have 3 days left on my newegg account before I am stuck with this MSI, forever. If I can't find a solution ASAP (in 24 hours!) I am returning this MSI board and getting a Gigabyte 8KNXP.
Can anyone help me out here with suggestions please. I'm at my wits end. I've never had to do SO MUCH WORK to get a system running stable. I put my P3 with Intel mainboard together 2.5 years ago and I haven't had ONE single issue.
Stability is a BIG factor for me. I can't even think about overclocking when this sytem won't run at rated speeds!
    Chris

This is a different problem.. the first board just flat out died after upgrading the BIOS. I never even got to use it.
This new board upgraded the BIOS just fine but I've been experiencing crashes and shutdowns.
I don't have any spare motherboard or CPU to test it in, and if I did I'd still have to run it for several days..and I don't have several days due in part to me having to dink around with it for so long.
I would say I am in game for 30-60 minutes before I see temperatures that high. Although again I have been playing this same game on my P3-1ghz with the same Video card and never once had a shutdown like this. Never once overheated.
I have all the fancy display/graphics options turned off..I have tested in different resolutions (it makes no difference temperature wise)
I do not know what my core temps are, I can check when I get home and post them if it helps.
I'm running everything at stock speeds. I've noticed Core Center ups my speed slowly from 201x4 to 203x4 etc and so I disabled that and finally flat out took Core Center out of startup. I didn't want it modifying anything while I was playing on the chance it was causing the crashes. Still no change even after that.
The temp does seem a bit high, but I have lapped the heatsink and fan and applied a layer of termal paste (silicon based) to both the HSF and the CPU. I removed that old black pad by scraping it off and then cleaning it with some xylene based carburetor cleaner. I spent several minutes rubbing the black melted parrafin goo off the processor and HSF with a coffee filter. I'm very confident there was little to none left when I applied the new thermal paste.
I don't understand why it runs so hot, nothing is overclocked, I'm running low settings in the game. These temps i'm posting are from Core Center. I have the case OPEN (plenty of ventilation) and I have the windows in my room open to the night air!! (i live in san diego, its cool at night right now) I tried with the case closed also just to be sure and I received the same temperature readings.
None of this makes sense...and after 4 weeks and 500 dollars I'm tired of having to make it sense. It should work right away and that's that.

Hi I am new on this forum.
I have problem with proper configuration of the BIOS in K8N Neo 4 Platinum. My processor is Athlon 64 3000. It has 1800 clock. My BIOS  makes default 200MHz x 5. It makes 1000 MHz clock. Will it be good if I change at 200 x 9?
Other thing: I tried to change at 200 x 9 but in Windows (2000) is still 200 x 5 (acc. to Core Cell). When I chanded on 200 x 7,5 all in Windows was ok. Core Cell showed 200 x 7,5. How I may resolve this problem?

At least some neo2's have problems with ps/2 keyboards. Their users could circumvent this by using usb keyboards.

Then I try to repair my Vista. Then the computer hungs while loading the DVD.
I have tried to boot with only one RAM in the computer, but the problem still
    there...
I have tried to reset the CMOS by changing the JPBAT (I think it called so) jumper
and to pull out the battery.
I have tried to disconnect all, but one HDD and but I can't say that it worked any
