Overclocking question

Hey all!  I'm just bought a new comp and am new to this board.  I have a pretty nice system put together(at least im my opinion. It's been running flawlessly for the past few months but i want to get a little more out of it considering there is a 4 comp LAN set up at my house and I am usually running server.  My question is what all do i need to do to overclock to get as much performance as possible.  It's running at 2.09GHz now and I'd like to overclock to about 2.5. The problem is when i try to up the multiplier it shows a lower speed.  When i increased the multiplier in Bios by 1 for CPU speed it read 833MHz.  Is there something wrong or am i just missing something really simple here.  Thanks for the help in advance.
MSI K7N2 delta-ILSR
Athlon XP 2600+ 333FSB
512 MB Kingston DDR400
Asus Geforce4 Ti4800SE
Too long to list everything  :D

well overclocking is an skill.you kinda gotta get the feel for it and its very important to Fully understand how changing your settings in your BIOS is gonna affect the rest of your system.with this in mind first off there are certain things that must be taken into consideration before you even start.
your gonna need a bigger better CPU cooler.i recommend anything thermal-right as most serious o/c will tell you they are very good with no frills.
second how good is your ram? if its just generic you may have a hard time getting very far.and just because it says PC 3200 or whatever doesn't mean much when you start pushing the limits and changing timings on things.
third thing is make sure you have a big power supply!very important.i recommend 400w for starters if your gonna overclock.
when you start you wanna go up a little bit at a time and for air cooling i would never recommend raising your v-core over .1 your biggest enemy is heat and what mostly causes heat is raising your CPU voltages.also ask lots of questions good luck!
also to unlock your cpu go to google and look up "amd wire trick"

  • Newb Overclocking Questions?

I'm just started overclocking and have a ram question. My ram, which is only Corsair 512x2 Value Select, shows that it's running at 2.5, 3, 3, 8, 2T. Now if i'm overclocking i want to lower or raise these numbers to make everything more stable? I thought you would want to tighten them, make them lower, but i'm confused after reading some stuff if i actually want to raise them since i'm overclocking the cpu.
Also there are two different types of voltages (or at least numbers i can raise one reads like 66 right now the other is a straight voltage, i believe it's at 2.5V right now) for my AGP card, which from what i'm hearing is something i would need to raise as well when overclocking, what's the diffrence between these two? I realize one is a voltage, what's the 66 number one for? thanks

66 stands for 66 mhz which is the speed the agp slot works at.
on some boards you need to set it to 67mhz for the agp lock to work.

if overclocking memory you can try 2.5-4-4-10-2T or 3-4-4-10-2T

  • Overclocking Questions

    Hello all,
I know i'm going to ask some n00b questions about overclocking but if someone could give me some answers i would be grateful.
So here are my puters specs:
    MSI K7N2 Delta L mobo
    AMD Athlon XP 2600+ @ 2.08Ghz FSB 333Mhz
    512MB Ram @ 333Mhz Generic Dual Channel (2X 256MB)
Heatsink Thermaltake VOLCANO 11 – Xaser Edition
What should i do to overclock the CPU without unlocking it (if it is possible).
Can i do it only by altering the FSB speed?
Also what should i do with the RAM and the AGP, PCI Bus?
Thank you in advance and Merry X-mas to all

Where do I access all of these OC options (like FSB:RAM ratios, 'Performance Mode', and all the other crazy stuff this board has?  And don't tell me the BIOS, I've been there, done that.  Do I need to update my BIOS?  (I'm using the one that came with the 875P)
    Here we go:
2.4 GHz Pentium 4 processor with 800MHz FSB and HT
Sapphire Atlantis 128MB Radeon 9600Pro GPU
    512MB(2x256) Kingston HyperX DDR400 RAM
    MSI 875P Neo 2 Motherboard

    And a floppy drive!
Cooling is stock, but I have a bunch of case fans and good air circulation.
As far as overclocking, I'm looking to go for about 3GHz (It sounds reasonable to me).
    Thanks.

  • Newbie Athlon xp overclocking question

I have not been in the habit of overclocking processors since the early pentiums (when it was simple multiplier changes), and have a question about modern athlon XP's
How do I know how much I can overclock the processor (an Athlon XP 2000+) safely, and which parameters on a K7N2G-ILSR board can cause significant damage ?
What performance increase is likely, and is it worth it  ( I know we sometimes push it just cos we can...)  )
Is there a newbie guide to overclocking somewhere that i could refer to ?
    Thanx
    Brummieman

The MOST interesting question is still not answered though.... what effect does the overclocking have on "true" applications?
Overclocking my 2100+ on the K7N2-L to 13*166 oviously catapulted my proccessor benchmarks up to the performances between 2400+ and 2800+, depending on the test, the results in 3d-mark went up from 8000 to 8500 for exsample even though you get the same result already with a fsb of 150 due to the lower performance on higher temperatures, but the results in sandra were quite outstanding (compared to the standard settings.
The use in application I still doubt at present (when do we really use our performance???)
ripping a DVD to SVCD with DVDx saved me something between 7 and 15mins for exsample, I do not see the use in running my system on the edge for that, as i stated before, I just wanted to see what is POSSIBLE....
I now run my system with fsb 150 again, which showed the same temperatures (idle and after 10 3dmarks) as with standard 133.
    What did you guys experience?
Are you sure he should go high enough for the syastem to crash completely so you need the 100mhz setup???
I`d think slowly rising step by step, run tests watching the temp readings until you get the first faults is safer and you feel like a scientist lol! OK, your methode has the advantage of  the adrenalin kick

  • I have an OVERCLOCKING QUESTION

i have a 2.8 overclocked to a 3.2. i am using pc3200 ram (400mhz). i have it set to run at a 5:4 ratio, i have my ram frequency running a 333. when i up my bus from 200 to 230 and reboot, my bios tells me my ram is running at 383 mhz. all the windows programs (clockgen, sandra) are telling me different. they say my ram is at 184mhz(184x2=368). windows apps are reporting 184 or (184x2). my question is, am i running at 383 or 368. my sandra scores are normal for my ram. which is telling the truth my bios, or the windows programs? also is there a way i can up my ram and not my FSB, any overclock programs allow that?

    Quote
which is better getting the extra ram boost or getting the extra processor boost?
There is no right answer. It depends on what your software benefits by. Try it both ways, compare the benchmarks, and then try real applications that you use to see if the response is noticeable. If you can't tell the difference I would go with the 1:1 ratio.
bejon2000 asked if you locked your AGP/PCI clock. When running in performance mode you can go to this clock setting, even though it is greyed out, hit enter and change it. You have to do this after adjusting the FSB as it also adjusts the AGP/PCI setting.

  • Overclocking question on dual G4 450 Mhz Mystic

(I originally posted this under "using" instead of "expanding" your Power Mac G4...hopefully the right people see this now)
Recently I became interested in overclocking my computers. I have owned a Gigabit Ethernet Dual G4 450 Mhz "Mystic" for about a year, until about a week ago I decided to overclock it. Two weeks ago I bought an old 500 Mhz (66 Mhz bus) G3 iBook and successfully overclocked it to a 600 Mhz (with 100 Mhz Bus). I am certified in solder repair by PACE so this stuff is pretty easy...
My question is about the Mystic. I went online searching for info on how to overclock it. I found that everyone running Dual 450's successfully overclocked to Dual 500's. So I changed the jumper layout to a 5x multiplier setting, and that was it, I had a dual 500 Mhz Mystic. After reading more, I really didn't find any more information about anyone trying to clock higher than 500 Mhz, although their jumper tables showed it could be achieved. All anyone really said was that trying to go higher than a 50 Mhz speed boost would be unreliable.
And that's where my question comes in. About 3-4 days ago I decided to attempt to overclock to Dual 550 Mhz. Which I performed successfully. My computer is still running fine after vigorous testing, such as running some intensive testing with techtool (which also confirmed my 550 Mhz clockspeed), while running about 10 other programs. I ran Adobe Photoshop, iTunes, iPhoto, iChat, Safari...basically all the programs in my dock simultaneously for a few hours. I also ran Halo on highest graphics setting for a few hours, and The Sims and some other games just to see. And so far, so good. My computer seems much faster and I have not noticed anything unusual. It runs so nicely and my system is well kept, I clean out caches and temp files almost every week and defrag constantly with norton. So...
Do I have anything to worry about? Is there any reason why I shouldn't keep this setting if it is working correctly for me already? Also, is there any reason why I shouldn't test a higher setting, such as Dual 600 Mhz? Has anyone ever tried overclocking to a speed this high?
Another thing, if the reason people don't overclock to 550-600 is due to temperature, is it possible to achieve this setting by installing another fan to keep the processors cool? I am just surprised that I haven't found anyone who has ever tried overclocking higher than 500 Mhz.
If anyone has any information, please let me know.
Also here are some specs on my computer:
    Origially Dual 450 Mhz G4
    1.5 GB Ram (two 512 mb PC100, two 256 mb PC100)
    30 GB Quantum HD

    180 GB IBM HD

ATI RAGE 128 (Been meaning to upgrade this...)
Digidesign MBOX 2 (External USB Audio)

The person on eBay (sngaporemac) was selling 933MHz upclocked 733MHz G4 CPU modules. I actually purchased one from him almost two years ago, to sort of test out so to speak (I am no stranger to overclocking). Although his elaborate and custom heatsink design utilised a heatpipe configuration, when I threw a solid RC5-72 ( http://www.distributed.net ) load to it, the computer would lock up within fifteen minutes. My solution (although a LOUD one) involved upgrading the Digital Audio fan, but that did not wind up being a long-term solution, so I ended up selling it.
Quicksilver G4 CPU modules can be used in Digital Audio Powermacs and earlier, as long as the 5th “power provision post” on the CPU module has +12V wired to it, and the motherboard revision is Uni-7 or greater for multiple CPUs: http://homepage.mac.com/leopoldporkstacker/.Pictures/overclock/tsunamimac/index. html

Meanwhile, I have two MDD “Quadnostril” Powermacs running dual 1.25GHz 7455A CPU modules in them overclocked to 1.42GHz at the stock voltage. Of course, there are a few tricks to getting them running just right, involving full-flow case modifications:

I am no stranger to overclocking. It can be done, but (a) there goes the warranty, (b) there goes lots and lots of time experimenting, (c) your wife will hate you, and (d) shouldn’t you be having a beer with your mates?

  • Turbo2 overclock question

Ive had my turbo2 for a few months now with the amd xp2100+, and no problems. My question is how high have you guys with the turbo 2 and a xp2100+ overclocked? Rate now i have my muliplier is deflut and my fsb is at 140. The core voltage is defult.
So is this good or can i go way up there in speed?

    Hi,
Make sure you have a good cooler on your processor and is seated properly w/ Thermal Compound. Remember overclocking is not recommended at all.

  • Hello all, new here to MSI, some overclocking questions

Hey everyone, new here to MSI products (a mobo, P45 Platinum) and forum.  I recently came from the 680i chipset and decided to try out these P45.  From reading a lot of things from various forums and here at https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=119345.0, it seems that there is a challenge (and the rewards !!) to overclocking the P45.
In any case, my questions are:
    1.  I know this has probably been answered somewhere but I've yet to concisely concluded, do you need to remove the on-board jumpers to overclock if you are trying to achieve over 1600 Mhz FSB?  I currently have the jumpers off.
    2.  I've notice that the GTLREF voltage is not within 63% of the CPU VTT using the latest beta bios A7512IMS.153 [v1.5b3].  Is that right?
    3.  Anyone have any experience using the RAM modules I have?  See sig for details.
    4.  Green Power Center crashes in Vista when making changes.  Is there a unknown compatibility issue?  I've have installed fresh copy of Vista.

Removing the jumpers will set the FSB Frequency to 400 MHz and force the system into a default-400 MHz Strap.  You should also be able to overclock manually in BIOS starting from other jumper position.  Just test and see which one works best for you.  It may be the default position or the 400 MHz position (jumper removal).

That is more or less standard DDR2-800 memory which should not make any problems.  In terms of overclocking it, you have to see what can be achieved.  Memory OC Results usually vary from system to system.

  • MSI 970 gaming g4 overclocking question

    Hi,
I'm OC'ing my new MSI 970 card with Afterburner and have a few basic questions:
    1. GPU-Z says I'm limited by Vrel. What does this mean exactly? My interpretation is that this is the max boost clock at the set voltage (provided there are no temp/TDP limits too)?
    2. Even at 99% GPU load and 1518Mhz boost clock (my max stable), my max TDP is around 94%. Does this sound right?
    3. Is it possible to reach a better overclock if *I don't* apply overvoltage? Just wondering if lower voltage / temps could actually result in better results and whether I should experiment with stock voltage.
    Thanks.

Your interpretation is correct. Indeed the gpu can't boost without limits. At a certain voltage it can't boost higher without getting unstable so stops itself at this point. GPU-Z's perfcap information displayed is then Vrel.

Yes, it is and it is very good as well considering the high clockrate. Your card has a great boost potential.

Not really. Of course a lower voltage will lead to a lower TDP value but as you are below 100% anyway you are not limited there. You should simply check for the lowest voltage you can run oc and clock it further until it gets unstable then apply extra voltage until it gets stable again. Once you can't get the gpu stable either way you are at it's total limit if temps or TDP won't stop you before.

  • KT4 Ultra Overclocking Questions.

I have read the above sticky in regards to this board. MSI (6590) KT 4 Ultra. My questions is this ..I have an AMD Athlon 1800+Xp CPU. In bios for FSb its default is 100...........obviously thats too low because BIOS will under clock the cpu to FSB 100 x whatever the multiplier is. I can set in BIOS as high as 272 mhz and a multiplier of 12.5/13.5 stable for gaming .  But how come Wcupid reports the FSB as being 142.34 when its obviously set in BIOS to 272 .........Is that just the CPU FSB multiplier or the actual system FSB ? One would think that if you set the FSB in BIOS to 166 that it should report the FSb as being 166 mhz ........266 in bios should be 266 FSb for system should it not?? .
Anyway the default ghz speed for this CPu is 1.591 GHZ at 266 FSb mhz set in BIOS. But i use the 12.5/13.5/ multiplier which makes it 1730 GHZ CPU speed and reports cpu as XP 2000 + in post info. Now i can go up in increments of 1 in BIOS FSb all the way to 274 ..anything higher is unstable. But i thought this moboard could be overclocked to a 266 mhz FSb . Wcupid shows it as 142.34 right now and the multiplier in BIOS is 12.5/13.5x and the FSB in bios is set to 272 i beleive . Maybe im dumb but can someone explain how this can be.

Sure i do ....If what you say is true ...Because AMi BIOS has a setting for FSB in BIOS which mine is set to 270 MHZ. Im a veteran and i have built CPUs so overclocking is not the issue. The issue is the amount of MHZ i can set in bios that does not equal up to what it should in Wcupid. Please re read my post and you will see what im talking about or go into AMI bIOS ver 1.0 if you are able to and see what im talking about. I can reach 276 in that setting (max with this bios version is 280) but the multiplier has to be dropped to 11.5 to gain stabability. Id rather have a lower 270 setting and higher multiplier just because its stable and is not overheating . I want to know why i cant set that in BIOS to max setting (280) . CPU wont boot if i raise it past 276 at 11.5 multiplying.
With the BIOS setting at 270 and the multiplier at 12.5/13.5 the following info is taken from Wcupid screen
    Internal clock 1779 ghz
    System BUS 284.68
    System clock 142.34 (143)
    Multiplier 12.5
Im used to AOPEN jumper setting boards to overclock .

  • K7T Turbo2 Overclocking question

Can i adjust the processor voltage without unlocking it first?
    i'm using AMD AthlonXP 2000+ T-Bred A

yes, but wicked unstable because of the overclocked agp, the screen would have white rectangles where the ads should be and that kinda thing. by moving down a little at a time, I was able to leave it @150 and have it run fairly well. by changing to my little guy, 1500Xp I was able to squeak a couple of more fsb ,but I still moved it back to 150 ,as that was the sweet spot Funny thing about it was, that I was running 3 different brands of ram, and still could get it up there ,but it was more stable with just 1 stick, and the Kingston was CL2 so I chose that. They weren't expensive ram either, Apacer and Centon from Circuit City. Closer examination of the ram showed up the fact that they were all Infenion chips. I was also using a modified version of 98se that allows up to 1 gb of ram. I have since loaded one with XP and still does excellent @150FSB and 2 sticks 256 Kingston CL2. I was gonna try PC150 but this little test showed that was a waste of money. This was with a FUTUREPOWER400watt P/S I think trying anything bigger would still give you problems as you have no way to lock pci/agp from the OC like a kt3 or KT4 has and hardware don't like OC as 1 dead harddrive will tell you. • 845PE Max Series overclocking question.

I have the 845PE Max Series motherboard with 1.7 Pentium 4 CPU and 1 gig of ram, 128mb AGP card.
Anyways, I would like to try overclocking it, I never really did it, I understand the basic foundemantals of it,
but what would be a good safe limit to raise the clock speed from 1.7 to 2 ?
will I see any significant increases ?
    Any recommendations?

The biggest thing to keep in mind when overclocking is not all hardware is the same. Somebody with your same processor may be able to overclock it to 2.7GHz where you might be limited to 2.2GHz. And when you are overclocking keep in mind it will overclock your memory too, so if it is not high quality your overclock may not be stable. With overclocking the only science is starting small, testing, then increase. Make sure you keep an eye on your temps. I would not want to see a processor go above 55C when under load.
    Good Luck

  • Simple overclock question

Ok I have had some time to learn everything I can about my setup and its feeling like it may not overclock at all, which is ok but I had hopes of a light overclock.  I have found that I cannot raise the fsb, but my cpu being the black edition has the ability to change the multiplier.  But whenever I change the multiplier up or down the system won't post.  I have raised cpu voltage to max(1.55v) with no luck.  I am running bios version 1.6, I know a friend said he had better luck overclocking and was using version 1.1.  I only updated due to wrong temps reported in windows for hardware.(speedfan, coretemp, rivatuner).  But I find that they are wrong on v1.6 as well, so I might try rolling it back.  I bought a ir temp gun, so I know I am well within specs(24C idle, 35C full out)

i don't own this board but i am unclear as to why you cant raise the fsb......I'm pretty sure that if you go to cell menu and scroll down to "adjust cpu fsb frequency" and than use the (+) and (-) keys you will be able to adjust

by only changing your multiplier, you are making huge jumps at 1 time....eg.if your fsb is @ 300 and multiplier is at 8 you will be running @ 2.4.....fsb @ 300 and change the multiplier to 9 and your now running @ 2.7 which is more than likely going to require alot more tweaks
