Overclocking the i7 3770K on Z77A-GD65 MB. HELP ME MY NEW FRIENDS!!!

Hi everybody! I really truly hope that someone can help me. I have tried to look EVERYWHERE with no good results... :(
I have a new Z77A-GD65 motherboard and an Intel 3770K processor running on it and I am trying to OVERCLOCK my system properly. You might think that who the hell is this bozo if he cannot overclock with the manuals and all..
Anyway, I really never have gone deeper into overclocking and I would sooooo much like to have a PRESET file (BIOS settings) which could give me about 4.5-4.8GHz frequency and then my memory is a whole another issue. I am able to run it at 1,6GHz anyway but I'd like to try more.
The thing is that I don't even know whether I should have that Genie II button enabled on the motherboard or not! I mean, can I overclock my MB even further if I have Genie button enabled? And then should I enable Genie II via the Control Center from within Windows 7 x64 too?? Or should I have that Genie button disabled from the MB and do everything "manually"? Frankly I know nothing and I am absolutely frustrated.
I know I would have to set some voltages and factors at various points but I find it too complicated. ASUS had a software that you could choose "turbo profile auto overclock" and that software just adjusted voltages and frequencies automatically, rebooting every once in a while until the system came unstable and it applied the latest stable settings. MSI should have that kind of an over-clocking software too!
So could you please reply for me stupid one and tell me that how should I overclock my system. Meaning all the possible settings that you could imagine. I have tried Googling of all the weird C1E's and C-states and HPET's and everything but it's just a mess. I just would like to get as much power out of my PC as possible. Period. I really would appreciate all kind of help.
And yeah, one more thing;;; when I have this MSI Control Center installed in OS then will it kind of "override" the BIOS settings done when booting up? I'm asking a lot of stupid questions but I have struggled with my new PC for four straight days and nights and my brains are starting to melt....
PLEASE::::
- give me the multipliers
- voltages
- other settings (like power settings)
- DRAM timing mode and frequencies
- EIST on/off?
- Turbo mode on/off?
- Enhanced turbo??
- ANYthing you can ever think of.
I'll humbly wait for a reply. Thanks for reading.

There are a number of OC threads here to give some basics. First off, learn what the limits are for voltages, etc. Intel datasheets & design guides are a great source. I will give you two voltage limits, 1 - DRAM V. = don't exceed 1.65v's, 2 - CPU V. = for an everyday OC, don't exceed 1.400v's. Get yourself a digital multimeter. There are several OC methods, so pick the one right for your needs.

It's a good start  thanks to Froggygremlin.
Btw if I may to add tips : try to overclock processor first with memory stay on default speed if we feels it is stable enough and want some more then go with the memory

hey guys so i have my pc taken apart, I hooked up the PSU to the mobo but when i try to power on all i get is power for a split second (the fans twitch) and one of the led's flashes but then theres nothing. I tested the voltage coming out of my power supply and it all seems to be fine, however when I hook the multimeter up to the V-check points, I get no voltage out of any of the pins...
Anybody have some ideas as to whats stopping the board from powering up?
    The components im using are:
    CPU:   Intel core i3 3220 i think
    Mobo: MSI z77a-gd65
    BIOS: default version
    RAM: 2x4 Gb corsair ddr3 1333mHz
    GPU: nVidia GTX 560Ti
    PSU: Corsair tx750W
    OS: windows vista 64-bit
I've tried booting with only mobo and ram, but doesnt post at all. Like i said, v-check points dont show anything which is weird considering i get good numbers from checking the 24-pin atx and other power cables

Have you tried with a  single stick of ram, then switch sticks/ DIMMS?
Do you testing with onboard VGA and the stick of ram. No HDD's, SSD's or other devices.
What Error are you seeing, I don't see it well described here.
Yes, I have tried it with different single sticks of ram in all four DIMMS, no luck.
I plugged the psu into the mobo with only the cpu, fan, and ram, but still no luck.
I still get power for a split second in which the led1 blinks blue one time, the fans twitch then nothing else happens. The same thing happens regardless of how i configure the components. Sometimes I can hear the faintest beep but it goes dead very fast

You said you took you computer apart after it crashed.....When it crashed, What happen? How do you know it crashed? Maybe this was the start to the issue. It crashed you took it apart, but never figured out why it crashed? I bet if we focus on the crash..We will figure out the issue. Did you ever get the psu from your friend? have you been able to test all you other parts and pieces?
Yes, I came home from class knowing I had left my computer powered on, however I noticed that it was off, and when i tried to power it up again, nothing happened. As to actually seeing it crash, no, i was not around when it happened. I havent had any luck getting a donor psu yet, still working on that. Im in the process of trying to take my board to a shop to get tested but maybe it will just be easier to RMA? Its only about 6 months old...
Also, i looked at the pins on the cpu socket and didnt notice anythiing wrong but i'll see if i can post some HD pics for you so the experts here can have a look.
Thanks for all the help so far guys, really appreciate that some people care enough to help a guy out

  • Z77A-GD65 not detecting Geforce GTX 970

I recently tried upgrading the GPU on my Z77A-GD65 from the Geforce GTX 560 to the Geforce GTX 970 but my computer does not detect the new card in. I've tried about a dozen things to attempt getting it to work, flashing the BIOS using a couple different methods, resetting the CMOS using the battery, as far as formatting my computer but still nothing works. When I boot the computer the fans on the GPU will both spin until the login screen appears then they stop. I originally thought maybe the PSU wasn't good enough for it, but even with a new Corsair CX750M the problem still persists.
When the 970 is plugged in the computer will default to the onboard graphics, and when I attempt to install the drivers for the 970 it tells me it can't find compatible graphics hardware. When the 560 is plugged in, it gets detected right away skipping past the onboard graphics, and allows me to install its drivers. The drivers for the 560 and the 970 are the same, 347.88, so I attempted to install them using the 560 then switching the cards out, which actually worked to detect the 970 once but I mistakenly removed the drivers thinking to reinstall them now that the card was being detected which made the problem come back. I'm not sure what to do at this point so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Try with latest beta bios:
    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
A.) Download >>this bios archive<< and place it on your desktop. Do not decompress.
B.) Download and install the Forum flash tool.
C.) Insert your FAT32 formatted usb stick.
D.) Make sure that all win 8 options are disabled. (Fast Boot etc) Also make sure the legacy USB is enabled.
E.) Start the forum flash tool and select option 1. Then point the tool at the compressed archive we downloaded earlier. Then to your USB Flash Drive.
         F.) Boot to the USB
G.) Now follow the directions and let the tool flash
H.) After flashing reinstall ME drivers in Windows: http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/intel_amt81_win78_xp.zip
If no help try the GTX 970 in another pc to verify it is working properly at all.

  • Overclocking the z77a-gd65 board

Hello my new found friends (I hope).I am new to both these forums and overclocking but I'm willing to learn. I have a msi z77a-gd65 mobo, 32 gigs crucial memory with an i7 3770k cpu rated at 3.5 GHz. I also have a corsair H80i cpu liquid cpu cooler.  Right now the cpu is running at 4.2 GHz but I would like to try to go higher manually if I can. If any body can help with easy  to follow instructions on how to do this I will be extremely grateful.

I recommend searching the threads that specialize in the 'Turbo' OC method. Ivy CPU's are not super OC'ers on conventional cooling solutions, but excellent performance can be pulled out of them in the 44X-45X range and still keep all the power saving features intact as well. CPU V. left alone to work on Auto is recommended. Initially for testing, set VDRoop to 100%. Disable EuP 2013, Overspeed Protection, and Spread Spectrum.

    Spread Spectrum ---Disable--- why
Spread Spectrum is for unique situation where there are TONS of computers in close proximity and is used to prevent them from interfering with each other via emf. It is also less stable.

Q2 :Intel Turbo Boost ---enbled--- why
This would be enabled when using a turbo oc. It boosts the cpu multiplier when under load.

You can leave this on "auto" for most everyday overclocks. It increase voltage to the PLL a tab but can cause issues with sleep if you are using an everyday OC.

  • Z77A-GD65 with 3770k & Kingston HyperX 2666mhz ratio stuck between 16&39

Hello all, its been a while since i was last on the forum (and never on intel side lol).
    I upgraded my PC from an AMD 1100t msi 990fxa-gd65 to a I7-3770k on a z77a-gd65.
Now all was working well from the start, i was able to overclock the RAM using the XMP profile both 1 and 2 (1= 2666mhz 2=2400mhz) and i was able to set a FIXED overclock of the CPU up to 4.6 stable.
However i wanted more, just because my friends kept telling me it could do it. So i attempted 4.8ghz but with little success, (only 2400mhz RAM and wasnt happy with temps (90c)).
So i thought maybe a bios update was in order, so i updated to A70 and began overclock attempts again. Now it let me have a good day of using the multiplier, first at x45 then x46 and so on to x48 (where it was unstable). Now after many attempts it no longer allows me to use a multiplier beyond x39. However the turbo will allow me to go up to x60.
I have attempted using the reset CMOS button on the rear of the case, loading defaults within BIOS, reflashing older versions of the BIOS (back to A5 which is newer than the original). Non have worked, has anyone else run into this issue.

You should already start to save some bucks because you're going to "upgrade" the PC again.
    And very soon.
    How come? what is coming?
Quote from: Bernhard on 15-November-12, 20:36:17
Your friends neglected to tell you that you needs some pretty serious cooling for that amount of OC on an Ivy CPU.
The fact that your BIOS multi is inhibited but the turbo multi still allows to set anything up to X60 may indicate a problem with the BIOS itself. Have you tried a full CMOS clear with battery removal ?
Did you update the ME firmware at the same time?
If it is the -GD65, have you tried the second BIOS by manually switching to it. That should still have your old BIOS, unless you flashed both.
Don't worry we already decided to get one of the best air coolers Noctua NH-D14.
However In you reply i see you mention the ME firmware, I haven't as i did not know what it was (i thought it best not to touch it unless i knew what it was).
Also i'll whip out a GPU and do a battery pull for the CMOS then use the secondary bios if that fails. As i haven't flashed both (unless they get done at the same time.)
lol just noticed my signature, it really has been a long time since i was last on. although i only just sold that PC off :D

  • Need help with clickbios ii terminolgy and values. Z77A-GD65 / 3770k

    Hello All
I recently purchased a Z77A-GD65 board and after searching I've found the differences in terminology between this and my previous Asus board but still have a couple of settings I cant find any info on.
    System Specs:
    motherboard: msi z77a-gd65
    cpu: intel 3770k
    ram: corsair vengeance 2133mhz 1.5v
    psu: corsair 850w
First things first is I believe I am running in turbo oc mode. I've selected the oc genie tab on the center right of the bios screen and proceeded to change settings there. With cpu voltage on auto and vdroop set to 50% at 4.6ghz. (I'll try and get screenshots of bios settings soon)
The following are the terms I need help with:
    In the my oc genie section;
     1. Long duration power limit
     2. Long duration maintained
     3. Short duration power limit
    In the main overclocking section;
     4. Digital Compensation level (not in owners manual, options auto/high)
     5. Cpu core ocp expander (enabled for overclock 4.5ghz+?)
    In the CPU Features section;
     6. long duration power limit w (does "w" stand for watts?)
     7. long duration maintained s   (does "s" stand for seconds?)
     8. short duration power limit
     9. primary plane current limit a  (does "a" stand for amps?)
    10. secondary plane current limit
    11. primary plane turbo power limit
    12. secondary plane turbo power
I know those are a lot of settings, but would appreciate any simple definitions as to what they do and recommended values for mild overclocking (4.5-4.80)
Also on my previous board (Asus P8P67 Pro) my 3770k was stable in prime95 for 18 hrs at 4.5ghz fixed 1.155v with only ram timings put in manually and LLC set to extreme.(or whatever max is called in asus bios) Voltage was fixed and everything else was defailts.

Well I'm back.  Been digging around for a few days and found some answers to my questions.
First things first s that for some reason I could not adjust voltage values with the + or - symbols. Clearing cmos did not help this. I had to reflash the bios to get this functionality back as well as clearing cmos before and after the flash.
So I figured out the values in the oc genie section are the same as the normal section but only used when your using the oc genie. (numbers 1-3)
Digital compensation level and ocp expander should be set to high and enabled respectively when going for higher overclocks. (4 and 5)
Now for the rest of my questions ( 6 through 12) I have found suggested settings and some info after hours and hours of searching but still have a couple of questions about them.
Long/short duration power limit, and primary/secondary plane turbo limit. I see suggestion settings of 250 or 255. I take it this is simply max supplied watts to the chip? If so why the 250/255 values? Is that the highest the board will give? Is plane turbo limit related to the enhanced turbo stated and how much wattage can be drawn there while the other limit is for any non turbo frequencies?
Long duration maintained, I've seen 60 suggested a lot. Why is this?
There's not an over abundance of info on these boards as compared to asus so it seems info is a little less documented and video tutorials explaining things are next to none.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Enabling OC Genie II from Control Center downgrades the CPU?!?! Z77A-GD65

Now I'm getting all the time more and more confused about this Z77A-GD65 with Intel i7 3770K over-clocking. I really hope that someone could help.
OK, there's a button on the motherboard that by enabling it the system automatically overclocks itself during the next boot. OK, fine. But what is that OC Genie II button in Control Center supposed to be? After enabling the OC button on mainboard and rebooting the CPU multiplier goes up from the default 35 to 42 and that's fine. But when enabling the OC Genie II overclocker from within Windows (from MSI Control Center) and rebooting, then the clock multiplier downgrades back to 35 ?!?!?! Why is that?
How is the Control Center supposed to be used for overclocking? Does it have a bug or something? At least it doesn't seem to work for me? Should the BIOS be reset to default values first or something? Should the OC Genie button on the motherboard be enabled at all?
However I would be happy to be able to automatically tune-up my system directly from Windows 7 (X64, SP1) but I don't know how to do it.
And why there's a button on the motherboard if the over-clocker is supposed to be working from within Control Center? Which one should I use and how? Moreover, should I have the main setting set (via reboot --> BIOS) set to STANDARD or OC GENIE II? I have so much trouble understanding all this..
PLEASE PLEASE HELP! Thank you friends.

Quote from: xmad on 26-September-12, 09:17:04
Go into bios and in the OC section, change "OC Genie Function Control" from By onboard button to "by bios option" see if that works better.
Also, most people don't use control center for more than monitering. I do all of my overclocking from UEFI/Bios and check on things in click bios II.
OK, thank you! That's exactly what I needed to know! So the Control Center's (within Windows) "Use OC Genie" shouldn't be used either? I suspect that this being enabled has got something to do with my poor ATI RADEON HD5770 performance. I'm currently experimenting it, don't know yet. But I will try disabling OC Genie from Control Center.
But should I disable the oc Genie button also on the motherboard itself? How would that affect things? Easier/harder to overclock the MB with OC Genie enabled? These current MB's are so damn complicated But I'd appreciate any help!

  • Z77A-GD65 Spiking through the Speaker

    Hi All,
I've recently built a new system using the above noted motherboard.
Everything is fine with one exception, just before the login screen in Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, a single spike is emitted through the speakers.  I tried updating to the latest HD audio driver, but this seems to have made it worse.  A spike is also emitted when exiting windows.
Any help on what could be causing this would be much appreciated.

So far I've only tried updating the HD Audio drivers, which seemed to make matters worse.  I've checked all components are seated properly and that all wire connections are good.
I did have a problem when booting, an error was reported "No device found" After the statement "Using Gen 2" - even after I'd set BIOS to use Gen 3.  After a quick search online I found that the external Sata 6G should be disabled.  Once done the error was cleared.
All other BIOS settings are pretty much the default.
As before, any help would be much appreciated.  Please let me know if you need further info.

  • Z77a-gd65 i7-3770k will not drop multiplier when idle windows 8

New to the forums here!  my setup is a z77a-gd65 i7-3770k with windows 8, and recently i've had a weird issue where no matter what my cpu stays at a constant x39 multiplier according to CPU-Z (version 1.63.0.x64).  i've tried just setting all BIOS settings to default to no avail.  Then I tried a simple turbo clocking method where I set all 4 core limits to 40 just to test, kept c1e and cstate options enabled, disabled speedstep, enabled enhanced turbo, and used xmp profile for memory, all other things default, and it's still stuck at x39 according to cpuz.  Is there anything else I should check?
I basically want a simple oc for now where it idles at x16 and goes up to xwhatever when the cpu is being used.  i just find it weird that after messing with some settings the multiplier never changes.
    Thanks for your help!

Just set those to default then set it to balanced. If it throttles you know it is the settings.
Otherwise, you might want to try updating to the most recent bios. >>Beta BIOSes<<
I'll give that a shot after work and report back

  • SATA 7/8 not showing up with the Z77A-GD65

I've recently purchased a new system, and everything runs smoothly other than the fact that my computer is seemingly unable to recognise any devices plugged into the SATA 7/8 ports on the mainboard. I'm trying to install an SSD as a boot drive.
I've double checked the cables, power, resetting cmos as well as plugging it in to the other SATA ports and it shows up fine, but in the BIOS the 7/8 ports do not even display under the system information section.
I've been unable to use the LiveUpdate tool for the BIOS as it leads me to a blank screen and I end up just having to restart my computer as nothing happens after a half hour or so.
Would really appreciate some help with this.

Okay, I know how you all hate buttinskis but... I just logged on to post a very similiar conundrum with my Z77a-GD65 so I thought I'd save some virtual trees and append here.
The reason why I (and possibly Murrph) want to boot from ports 7 or 8 is because we want to run SATA3 RAID. The Asmedia ports don't appear to allow that so our only option is to RAID SATA3s from the Intel ports 1&2 which leaves only ports 7 or 8 for our SATA3 boot drive, a slightly slower boot is a small price to pay for a faster raid. Data disks are fine with the SATA2 3-6 but I'd prefer not having to add an additional SATA3 controller to set up my rig the way I'd like it to run.
Granted, Z77s and SATA3 are still in their infancy and Intel is humpin' to keep up but it would be nice if the BIOS and mobo makers could add a little more leeway with their secondary SATA3 chipsets (beyond the braggin' rights of having "4 SATA3 Ports"!)
[BTW- Thumbs Up on the Thumbs Down for "Live Updates", the technology just isn't there yet.]

  • Z77a-GD65 - Thanks for the help before _ one last question

    -
you guys were very helpful re - Pcie lanes , and we are probably going to move in future to one of the suggested boards:
my problem is i have 4 cards in the GD65 all in 1X slots _ the encryption software runs them at a full type pace.
1X is fine as I'm not gaming , just solving "xxxCoin" blocks .
at the start everything ran for about 24 hours, but now within 8 hours i will notice that the Blue LED light system is full lit up and everything is frozen - i have been working on the program dialing down the intensity slowly to find the problem, but any suggestions?
I have to power off manually if this happens , but all the fans on the cards stay at the same RPM (i.e as high) but the blue LED is full lit and everything is frozen.
as opposed to now there are 2 leds lit in normal operation.
    any pointers?

    OK guys sorry about that.
I should know better sorry i was rushing , OK i believe have figured out the general problem.
the Blue Led represent HD activity normally when they get stuck solid the OS had frozen , I have narrowed that down to bad power..
oh sorry I'll add MAX REVO 1500W PSU to my signature -
I have a meter on the point, at full blast the 4 cards and the mobo etc are pulling around 1150 to 1200w oh the 1500w Max REVO.
We have notoriously bad quality power where i live , (the whole suburb) (they have and actual sign up in the main street announcing they are working on it )
    SO here is my Question:
Does the the Z77A-GD65 have what might be called "Watch dog" where the Bios polls the OS for a response and if it does not get one then restarts the system, my Brother is a Sys engineer he said a lot of Servers have it ?
this would  be very beneficial to me as its always when i go out that of course the power screws up and i come back to find a frozen or switched off computer , but if i had this feature i could just run a . BAT at the start-up and be back online working again after reboot.
thank you for any help !
