Overclocking to Save Battery ?

Somebody was suggesting me this, to improve the performance of the battery overclock the phone to 900MHz, it will slow down the processor but will save quite a bit of battery.
My question is
is it true
How safe it is, will it cause any damage, working, functionality, features of the phone.
What side effect, negative effect can it have on the working of the phone.
inshort is it advisable ?

1. yes and no. it depends on how you choose to overclock it. if you use titan's kernel, which im pretty sure is the only way for pr1.2, you have the option to reduce the voltage as well as overclock. reducing voltage reduces the power consumption of the device (theoretically), and hence may improve battery life. in my case, the decrease in power consumption caused by the decrease in voltage offsets the increase in power consumption caused by increasing the frequency from 600mhz to 900mhz.
theres also the load aspect. if your processor runs at a lower clock speed, it puts more load on the processor to handle calculations compared to if the processor were running at a higher clock speed. ie. 30% load on a processor running at 900mhz would be equivalent to 90% load on a processor running at 300mhz. increasing load increases power consumption, however, as there is no way to measure the power consumption on these devices, its pure guesswork as to how the power consumption scales with loads. it could quite well be possible that the power consumption increased from running a higher clock speed could be offset by the decrease in power consumption caused by running significantly lower loads.
ie. my pc (phenom ii x4 965be, 8gig ram, dual radeon hd 5850 graphics cards) will only use about 100w of power when idling or running desktop stuff (cool and quiet disabled, ulps disabled, etc). however, when i run a game (full load on cpu and gpu), power consumption increases to 500w-ish.
in the end, it all depends on how stable your n900 is when running the low voltage profiles. mine runs at 900mhz stable at the 'ideal' voltage profile, however, it crashes if i swap to the 'starving' profile. stability varies from device to device.
if all you want to do is improve the battery performance, you can skip the overclocking and just stick to the voltage adjustment.
2. there is always the risk of damage and detrimentally affecting the functionality of the device. these can be minimised by overclocking smartly, ie. overclocking in small jumps and then testing the stability using an application that runs high load. if any artifacting or speed loss or notable instability manifests, then youve gone too far. although in this case, i wouldnt recommend going above 800mhz unless you're willing to take the chance that you might brick your device. it may also shorten the life span of the device (assuming the cpu's lifespans is measured in clock cycles, as you increase the clock speed, it will go through the clock cycles much faster).
3. as in 2, you can brick your device, and cause significant damage. its possible that even nokia care will refuse to repair it as it was damaged due to negligence on behalf of the user.
its up to you whether you're willing to give it a go or not.
the only benefits are significant improvements in performance of the device and some improved battery life if you can get it to run on a lower voltage profile. for me, the performance improvements are worth it.
Hey @Sever you have given me some real Go Crazy information, I mean dont get me wrong I am not syaing it may not be correct I am saying it sounds pretty Mind Boggling, which has further confused me. I mean overclocking idea was suggested by someone.
I dont know if I want to do it atall or not. I dont want to fiddle with the Phone device and cause any complications.
I might aswell live like others who are facing this problem of battery getting drained faster in the N900. Then Regret it forever by tampering the phone.
Tell me from a Layman perspective, from a plain vanilla point of view. Going through this which is sounding pretty complicated activity and that too at a risk, does it all make sense to tamper with the phone by overclocking it. Or just leave it as it is. Maybe we may have a safe solution in the form of future firmware updates sometime in the future.
I dont know what to do ?

Does closing apps save battery life? If so, is there a way to close all apps at once?

There is no way to close all apps at once. When you leave an app , most apps stop working immediately. A few apps will continue to complete the task they were working on. Mail is an example of that. There is a short time limit though after which the app stops running and the state you left it in is stored. Quitting apps does not increase battery life.

What I notice is after 3 hours (approx) of disconnecting the phone from charging socket  battery is reduced  a bit I do not know how to measure the battery remaining etc , are these apps the reason for drain out of battery quickly if yes then how do I disable them for a few hours and re activate back again.
Or I need some thing else to do to save battery?

To cut the long story short.. Refer THIS  and THIS
There are a lot of applications available at the MarketPlace which will give you the remaining battery time..but keep in mind that these values are calculated based on the immediate use and are just indicative. (e.g. immediately after playing a game which is draining the battery at a fast rate the battery may show 5 hrs. remaining..but after that you don't use the phone for a long time and the remaining battery may show as 12 hrs..)

  • How to save battery life for ios 7

How do you save battery life

There is many things to help save battery life on IOS, hear are some battery saving tips I use when with low battery  .
Battery saver 1: Turn off Bluetooth , by going to "Settings>Bluetooth" and switching the little "On/Off" toggle.
Battery saver 2: Turn down the screen brightness half way or just below is fine, for at home, but if you use your idevice outside turn it up just below max brightness so you can see the screen, to turn up or down brightness you can navigate to "Settings>Wallpaper and Brightness" and there will be a slider to adjust brightness.Or if you are on IOS 7 you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen and it will bring up "Action Centre" and there will be a little sun icon, next to it will be another brightness slider, to exit "Action Centre" press the home button or just swipe the little down arrow.
Battery saver 3: Volume turn the volume up and down at certain times of day "eg: I turn volume up full or just below in the afternoons because most things are going on in the afternoon that probably make lots of noise, and at night turn it down because your ears have adjusted to quietness  and can pickup on quieter sounds".
Battery saver 4: Turn off WIFI when not in use "eg when playing games or just switched off" you can do this by going to "Settings>WIFI" there will be a "On/Off" toggle or via "Action Centre" "IOS 7+".
Battery saver 5: When your not going to be using your device for a while shut it down by holding the "Sleep/Wake" button.
Battery saver 6: Close apps running in the background by double tapping the home button and holding down the running apps then tap the little "-" minus in a red circle to close "IOS 6 and lower", things are a little different with IOS 7 its the same process of double tapping  the home button but a different way to execute the apps, you do this by swiping "Up" on the open apps. "Tip: You can swipe 3 at once!".

  • Do resized videos (from iTunes) save battery life?

I have downloaded two videos from itunes. What size/resolution are they? If I resize them to fit the iPod touchs screen resolution will I save battery life?

If I resize them to fit the iPod touchs screen resolution will I save battery life?
That's a good question that I've wondered about. The touch screen native resolution is 480-by-320-pixels. When I export from my eyeTV software, it's at 480x360. PERHAPS, using larger image sizes causes the CPU to work harder in resizing the content. This COULD lead to shorter battery life.

  • How do you turn off apps in ios 7 to save battery?

in old OS, you could turn off apps to save battery. how do you do it in new OS7?

To close out apps, simply double click the home button and instead of holding down the app icons and clicking on the X mark in older versions, you have to swipe the app window up and away.
Also you can save on battery by turning of background app refresh from settings, as explained in this article .... http://nyacomputing.com/how-to-close-apps-in-ios-7-and-save-on-battery/

  • How to save battery power

How can I save battery power on my iPhone5. When I go to work I keep my phone in a drawer at that time it seems to lose power very fast. Any other time the power is fine.

    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
If cellular reception is minimized when placed on a drawer, more battery will be used trying to maintain cellular reception with or without making any calls. If not being used during that time, enable Airplane mode on the iPhone before being placed in the drawer.
