Overclocking X1600 in Mac OS X?

So does anyone know yet a way to overclock the X1600 in Mac OS X I know I would flash my BIOS but people tell me that destroys the EFI Bios, so does anyone know a overclocking tool for Mac, I can't seem to find anything so I thought someone else might know.

Sounds like very Window-ish behaviour. I would suspect there ain't a lot of hope but MacFixit and similar sites might have experimented a mite.

  • Overclocking X1600 128MB

Is it possible to overclock it to make it run better?? If so, how to do this??
And could someone please explain what this means:
There are reports that the 256MB version is now clocked at around 420MHz core and 450Mhz memory and scores nearly 4000 points on 3DMark05
I dont understand these numbers...help would be greatly appreciated.

3Dmark is a video benchmarking utility. It tests your video card using all variety of methods and pumps out a final score. Higher the better.
Here is a bunch of people bragging about scores if you want a comparison as to whether 4000 is good or not, and where it lands compared to other systems.
I'm sorry but I couldn't find information to verify those are indeed the right MHZ. Were did you get this information?

  • Overclocking an iMac G4 1.25 (20")?

I have an iMac G4 1.25 (20").  Is it possible to overclock this like in other G4 systems?  I've had successful experience in overclocking a G4 MDD from 1.25 to 1.5 and it worked out great. I've also seen posts where people have overclocked a G4 Mac Mini from 1.25 to 1.5.  So can the iMac G4 1.25 also be overclocked?  It seems logical but wanted to see if anyone had experience with this.
    Thanks in advance!

Not sure about the overclocking part; a company who had been in business a
relatively short time and offered a logic board replacement with upgraded 1.9
GHz G4 chip; & was a board-for-board swap, for the most part. Hard to find now.

The inaccessible design of these iMac G4 luxo model computers makes for
major difficulties compared to simple open door case tower model G4/G5.
I remember my B&W G3 350 had a way to be overclocked by changing how
the pins on the processor connected. That was another era. Some even had
zif adapters; users worked around the limitations, because there was room.
My iMac G4s don't exactly function, One was able to start but needed the
superdrive replaced, or so it seems. Another may need a power supply,
or it appeared. The Third one was part of a deal where I had to take it to
get the one I wanted that worked OK at the time. Likely it has good parts.
    Although this http://xlr8.com/machspeedcontrol-osxandos9combo.aspx may
be a little interesting, that's all remaining from the XLR8yourmac Daystar link.
A CPU upgrade and maybe an SSD such as OWC has for legacy ATA Macs?
Could be there may be some way to upgrade the processor, if you start out
with a pile of repairable iMac G4 1.25GHz 17" or 20" models, and a box of
other items. There is not much room on an iMac G4 logicboard, but maybe
a CPU from a portable Mac may be able to work. Trial & error, & error, etc?
Sounds like a project, of a sort...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • ATI dvi to component video adapter?

I have an older HDTV that only has component video inputs (for HD signals anyway). The macbook pro has an ATI graphics processor, so I took a chance and ordered the ATI dvi to component video adapter:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&tag=replaylink-20&camp= 1789&creative=9325&path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB00068NSZA
I know it doesn't work with the old ati single-link dvi macs, has anyone tried it with the new x1600 based macs?

I have the same problem. I have found out that RGB output from computers is actually RGBHV, which includes vertical and horizontal sync signals. Therefore conversion from Macbook Pro DVI or RGB to plasma component (YPrPb) requires more than just a simple converter like ATI DVI to Component video adaptor, unless Apple can output component video from the video card (that's theoretically possible, but it depends on how Apple integrated the chipset into the motherboard, according to ATI).
The alternative is to use a processor to convert the signal. Key Digital produce a signal transcoder, KT-VTCA3. http://www.keydigital.com/ProductDetail.aspx?categorycode=500&itemno=KDVTCA3&pro ductname=Video%20and%20Control%20Adapters. I have ordered one of these and believe it will work, in lieu of Apple providing a means for outputting component video directly from the Macbook Pro.

  • Slow performance LR 1.3.1 (Library Module)

LR 1.2 is running OK on my iMac. A while ago I tried LR 1.3. The upgrade really slowed down performance. Mostly a lag in the sliders and navigation tools in both Library and Develop modules that made it unworkable to me. I changed back to LR 1.2.
Since I want to import Canon G9 RAW files into LR, I upgraded to LR 1.3.1 recently. Performance of sliders and the navigation tool in the Develop module seems the same as in LR 1.2 (or maybe even a little better). Which means it is OK (workable). It still shows the blur when navigating a 100% zoomed image though. But the navigation tool in the Library module still has the same slow performance as it had in LR 1.3. Unworkable!!! I tried everything: optimizing, new catalog, rendering previews, etc.
I need the Library module to work smoothly (as in LR 1.2) in order to compare images at 100% zoom. I am afraid I have to go back to LR 1.2 again and find another solution for my Canon G9 RAW files. Most inconvenient. I am very disappointed. Especially, since Adobe showed they CAN get it right with the Develop module in version LR 1.3.1...
    Oh yeah, my system specs:
iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    3GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM (2GB + 1GB)
232,89 GB Harddrive, 113 GB available
    ATI Radeon X1600 128MB
    Mac OS 10.4.11
Please Adobe, make the Library module run as smoothly as the Develop module in version 1.3.2...

The preview folder is 2,11 GB big. The .lrcat is 47 MB big.
I opened a new test catalog. I imported 326 images. After the import I rendered 1:1 previews. It took a long time. Real memory used was between 700-1000MB. Virtual memory used was between 1000-1400MB. When it was done rendering it still keep on using 700MB real memory and 1000MB virtual memory. I had to close LR and restart. Real memory after restart was 75MB real memory and 375 virtual memory.
But it didn't matter. The lag in the navigation tool of the Library module was still there.
I noticed that when clicking in the navigation window there was less delay as when I slide the white square in the window (in Library module). In the develop module this seems the other way around. Sliding showed less delay than clicking.
    What's going on here?
I also have a MacBook. Performance seems much faster than on my iMac overall. After creating a new catalog and rendering 1:1 previews, the lag in the navigation window seems less than before. But it was still there...

  • Keychain Backup Cannot Be Restored

    Hi all,
I've been using my MacBook Pro 15" since purchasing it in November, and of the various cool software features of OS X that compelled me to switch, one of them - Keychain - has certainly been a point of frustration.
I have yet to successfully restore a keychain backup to a useable state. I've followed Apple's instructions for backing up important files to the letter - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301239 - and yet my Keychain backups fail to work; though the entries show up in Keychain Access, my user name and password is never entered, though this information exists in - and therefore should be provided by my Keychain.
I've tried backing up and restoring without a reinstall of OS X, and I've tried backing up my Keychain, reinstalling OS X and then restoring my Keychain files (as per Apple's instructions), and I never seem to have any luck. Yes - the information is still there, and I'm able to use Keychain Access to look up the information and re-save it back to my Keychain (after which the newly saved Keychain items work!), but this seems to defeat half the purpose of backing up.
I could almost just save all of my login names and passwords in a Word or Excel file and store it in an encrypted disc image. Sure - it wouldn't be nearly as efficient, but if I have to manually recreate all of my Keychain items whenever I have to restore a backup, what's the point of Keychain?
Also odd is that I can save several website user names and passwords to my Keychain, and they'll work fine, listed as "Internet password"s in Keychain access. If I back up my Keychain, reinstall (clean - format and isntall) OS X and restore my backed up Keychain, in addition to my login and passwords no longer working in either Safari or Camino, all entries that used to be "Internet password"s in Keychain Access are now listed as "Web form..." something or other (though all other information seems to be the same (user and pass and URL info saved correctly).
Has anyone had this problem with Keychain? I've read an awful lot of negative stuff regarding the Keychain feature of OS X since I made the switch and startd having my own problems with it. Just wondering if anyone else out there shares in my specific frutstration.
I would love to just be able to back up my Keychain when I have to and know that if I ever need to restore it - with or without having performed a clean OS X reinstallation - that I can do so and that the back up will just pick up where I left off and that they'll just continue to work, transparently, without any tedious manual user intervention.
PS - I've tried using Keychain First Aid, I've tried deleting my keychain preferences file, I've tried reparing permissions, and on, and on, and on....none of these things seem to correct the problem.
It should also be known that I've tried backing up and restoring with multiple versions of 10.4.x - always within the same version - never across versions. Doesn't seem to make a difference.

    Hi,
log shipping from SQL server 2005 to 2008 is not straight forward, you can not keep secondary database in standby mode alternative approach would be to have secondary database in norecovery mode.
But this is one way logship,  If you need to fail over to the standby server, you now have to swap the log shipping roles, but you can't then log ship back from the 2008 server to the 2005 server.
refer below link for steps, in RESTORE TRANSACTION LOG TAB you need to select
    NO RECOVERY MODE.

  • MBP Kernel Panic when connecting to HDTV (DVI)

I have a 15" MacBook Pro that has been working perfectly since I got it. I tried today to connect it to my Hitachi 51" HDTV (via DVI) and got an instant Kernel Panic. I used my 15" Powerbook with this HDTV without any issues.
I've searched and found folks with kernel panics when waking their MBP if the RAM is faulty, but nothing at all about issues when connecting an external display. I am running with all the latest updates, firmware update, etc.
I don't have any problems connecting to a 23" Cinema display or to a 19" Samsung LCD, but I tried several times to connect to the HDTV and got a kernel panic each time. I changed resolutions on one try and still got the same issue (720x480 so the TV would see it as 480p). I even tried booting up with the display already connected and it kernel panic'd when it tried to switch into the full OS X GUI.
The specific error is in the panic.log is:

What happens if you boot from the DVD that came with the MBP instead of booting from your hard drive? It could have something to do with your configuration.

  • Another iMac Freezing Issue - pls help a newbie out

I understand this problem is not uncommon - I've been trying to read the many threads I see on the issue. However, most posts outline problems, suggestions are made, but then reported to not work. Also, many threads are 2 years old.
Could someone please suggest a step-by-step troubleshooting solution?
    Here are my pertinent facts:
    * Bought 20" iMac in July 07.
    * Processor: 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    * Memory: 3GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    * Hubs installed the second memory stick a while ago (over a year and i don't remember this problem correlating with the new memory).
    * Video: ATI Radeon X1600
    * OS: Mac OS X 10.6.2
    * HD: 250GB capacity, 31GB available
    * I am using an external harddrive to back up my stuff (LaCie, connected by firewire)
    * Frequently used apps: Firefox, iPhoto, Photoshop Elements, Parallels (Quicken for PC), MS Office for Mac, etc.
The problem starting occurring several months ago, while I was still running Tiger. Have since upgraded to Snow Leopard, with no improvement, in fact, things are getting worse.
I get display distortion ("artifacts"?) - horizontal lines, blocks of the screen distort, usually clearing after dragging that part of the app off the screen of view and then back.
Typically, if I start seeing display issues, a freeze up is imminent.
Sometimes I get a sense it's coming soon - things run more slowly. Other times, it seems without provocation. I click on a window and nothing happens.
Sometimes it's the wheel of death other times screen completely locks up with no spinning wheel. No option to force quit. Mouse is unresponsive. Keyboard appears to be, although I can toggle the Caps lock button on and off (light toggles). If I am streaming video, the screen will lock up, but the audio continues. If I wait (have gone to bed and come back in the am) it is still frozen.
If I am streaming video (i.e Hulu on Firefox) or working in memory intensive applications (Windows, Parallels, Photoshop Elements, etc.) Problem is more frequent.
I can go a day or so without problems, but if I am doing anything slightly involved, it happens much more frequently, as often as every 10 minutes or half hour or so.
    Steps I have taken:
I always have to do a hard reboot. I have run disk utility multiple times, occasionally it finds and corrects stuff, but no fix seems to be permanent.
I have seen suggestions of resetting PRAM as well as doing a clean re-install, but also seen that those fixes haven't endured.
I don't have Apple Care and I'm not sure what steps I should be taking to fix this. Is there hope? I mostly see lots of problems reported, but not successful resolution.
It's aggravating because I can't use the system for the stuff I bought it for (ex: digital scrapbooking) without worrying about losing my data. I switched to a Mac because I heard they ran so great and were "cool" to boot. While there have been many features of the Mac i enjoy, *if this kind of performance is typical after 2 yrs of use, I will not remain loyal to Apple.*
If you have been successful in resolving the issue with Apple, what did you tell them and what did they do?
I am competent system "user", but not as good when it gets into the weeds. Would appreciate any advice, feel free to spell it out as tho I were an idiot.
I would appreciate a "try this, then try this" approach, especially if you have tried it and it has worked for you.
    Thanks for the help,
    Kendra

OK, Mean, I mean Meanest, we have the same system (mine was purchased late 2006), and I can say we have identical symptoms. I agree with Paul_31 regarding disk space, but in addition, from all the posts on various Apple forums, it seems clear that the problem is due to the Radeon X1600 graphics card AND heat. These elegantly-designed Macs that we all love have a lot of stuff packed into a small package. Consequently they run hot, and over time the result is components bake and deteriorate. In our case, the weak link seems to be the Radeon card and since it’s not easily replaced, repair costs are nearly as much as the cost of a new iMac. A contributing factor is that over time dust will build up inside your Mac, and this serves as insulation, retarding heat transfer, and causing components to run hotter still.
OK, so that’s the sad tale, but what can you do? Assuming your system is not too far gone due to the ravages of heat over time, there are things you can do to help prolong it’s life, and hopefully get it to behave itself better until the time it finally fails completely.
In my case, the steps I’ve taken have resulted in a system that now “generally” runs for days at a time without locking up/crashing. A caveat: these are bandaids, not true fixes. I’m convinced the Radeon card will eventually fail and I’ll be faced with shopping for a new Mac – I’m only hoping the steps taken will give me a few more years of use before that happens. So, here’s my suggestions (basically they all have to do with getting your Mac to run cooler and being able to monitor temps so you know just how hot things are getting):
    1. First of all, if you don’t already have one, get one of the free programs available to monitor your Mac’s internal temperatures. One of the most popular ones is a widget, iStat Pro. As I type this iStat Pro is showing my temps are as follows:
    Hard Drive 92 deg. F
    CPU 85 F
    Ambient Air 69 F
GPU Diode (graphics card) 92 F
    Hard Drive Bay 95 F
    Memory Controller 90 F
    Optical Drive 81 F
If you have iStat Pro and see that your temps are about the same as these, I would say don’t bother to read further – you may have a different set of problems. If your temps are 10-20 F (or more) higher, keep reading.
    2. Try to clean out the internals of your Mac with compressed air. After 3+ years of use, I used an air compressor with an air gun attachment and blew through the vents at the back and bottom of my Mac with 60-80psi and actually saw a cloud of dust come out of my Mac. A more effective approach would entail cracking open the case of the Mac so you could really blow directly on the different boards/components. I haven’t done that, but I’m tempted to give it a try. Note: Some have suggested vacuuming and/or using a can of compressed air. I don’t think that approach is all that effective. You need a really strong flow of air to get that dust out of the inards.
    3. Download the free program SMC Fan Control (v 2.2.2). It will allow you to adjust the fan speeds higher for each of the 3 internal fans. The Mac has firmware that ramps up the speeds of these fans as internal temps rise, but the general consensus is the Mac firmware is “too little, too late”. With the standard Mac firmware, the fans will run at their default settings well beyond the point where the components are already way too hot. SMC Fan Control allows you to set the minimum fan speeds higher than the Mac default.
Once you've done these steps, I'd suggest doing a SMC reset, then re-boot while keeping your fingers crossed.
This is getting too long so I’ll stop for now. Good luck...

  • Latitude D810 v Macbook Pro 15.4

    Hello all.
I'm attending college this fall and am in need of a laptop. I am not a hardcore gamer but World of Wacraft and Star Wars Empire at War are my favorites now. I currently have a 3.2GHZ Dell desktop with 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, 128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Basically, I want a laptop that isn't a huge monstrosity but can game and do everyday stuff well.
I am a Mac enthusiast but I realized a year or so ago that I cannot operate solely based on a Mac due to my gaming habits - I just ended up going back to this desktop. This might change in college but I don't want to take a ~$2,000 risk.
Anyways...! I was interested in the Dell Latitude D810, as it seemed to have a good, non-integrated video card and great speed: http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/latit_d810?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s= bsd
However, after finding out about boot camp (http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/), I became very intrigued. I realize Boot Camp is in Beta but once the kinks are worked out and the product is released, would it be safe to say running Win XP on the Macbook Pro would be similar to the Latitude D810?
I have to say I'm not the best with processor numbers, difference between mobility and desktop, etc. - but if I prefer the Mac hardware, and it can run the Windows OS I sometimes may need for games, AND it runs at a similar, if not better, speed than any Windows-based laptop, why not go with the Macbook?
I would highly appreciate any insight people have on this matter. I may be totally confused about what exactly Boot Camp is, but I hope I'm not.
    Thanks guys
    Matt
      Windows XP Pro

    Hello again MattG7,
Close your eyes and buy is the only way to servive when your going to buy a top of the line machine like the MBP. I garantee you'll see some other machine in 6 months that is faster and better. But with a Mac you usually look at the investment as 2.5-4 years not 1.5 for a Dell. I downloaded the SigmaTel drivers from thier site and it works. You unfortunately have to connect the headphone to the IN sound port! But it works great!
I've been playing HL2 for awaile now and it just plain rocks. XP is just as stable as any other installation I've been on and I've supported them for years. (stable for XPSP2;-)
In the end it's a question of Quality and Community that should be at the top of your list.
If your not in desperate need of a gamming machine I would suggest the top of the line MacBook (white) instead of the MBP mainly because it's just as fast as the MBP but not in the graphics department.
I want 256MB because I'm a gamer, if you run WoW you'll be fine on a MacBook if you want to run the latest and greatest FPS with everything set high then MBP is for you.

Hey!! guys can anyone help me plz..i would be really greatful.
My MBP does not boot up in normal mode but boots up in safe mode and shows me these red lines. when i boot up in normal mode it makes bong sound and shows the screen with apple and starts loading the osx and after few seconds gets stuck on the white screen.
Is this the graphic card problem?? has anyone had the same issue earlier?? my graphic card is ATI radeon X1600.

Your Mac addresses 3GB maximum, as you stated.
As for the benefits of "parity" (having identical RAM in both slots), your Mac automatically does that to the extent it can. That is, if you have 1GB in one slot and 2 GB in the other, the first 1GB of the second slot will work in parity with the RAM in the first slot.
Secondly, while everyone talks about the benefits of parity, the reality is that you won't notice it. There's no reason to worry about it, or to install 2 2GB chips for extra cash, since you'll still only get 1GB of parity in each slot.
In conclusion: either setup will work (1 slot 2GB, 1 slot 1GB or 2x2GB). You will not see a noticeable difference between the two.

  • Bus Speed on LimeBook

This Lime iBook is slowing down more and more as I add stuff to it. I'm wondering how much bus speed has to do with it, accessing and all that. I perform all the regular maintenance and use macJanitor also. Is it just a consequence of older technology and slow processor speeds? Mine is the SE with 466 mhz CPU.

RichardIf you are using more and more of your Hard Disk space the system is limited on the amount of virtual memory it can use. It is advisable to leave at least 10% of your hard disk free. I assume you are using Mac OS 9 (this was what would have been supplied with your Lime iBook originally. The hard disk could also do with de-fragmenting now and again under OS 9. (Although you shouldn't do this if you do have OS X installed.) You can tell the bus speed of a mac by looking in the System Profiler. The Processor speed is also a good hint. Your processor is 466. 466/66.67 = 7. This is the multiplier (usually an integer). If you go to the Control Panel and Energy Saver there is an option check box which can reduce the multiplier to 5.5 ... 5.5x 66.67 = 366MHz - this saves battery power - only available on the 466 iBooks and Powerbooks. Many of the overclocking mods for Macs involve changing the multipier - but this involves serious hardcore soldering so it's not an option unless Apple builds in the option.
To get your iBook to go fast I recommend you:
Up your RAM to the maximum (576Mb)
Upgrade the Hard Disk or purchase a Firewire External Drive.
My other tip would be to not buy brand new software - it invariably requires more processing power (as it is aimed at today's machines). Look out for the same (geniune) software but older versions on eBay.

  • Anybody got experience with Hitachi Deskstar 7K750?

    Hi,
I'm finally about to get my iMac a bigger harddrive. I've been looking at Seagate's 750gb drive, but i read Anandtech's review of Hitachi's 7k1000 harddrive and as far as i understood they were quite positive about it. After looking into 7K1000 i noticed that they also have the 7K750, which is 750GB.
I was wondering if anybody knows or has any experiences with this 7K750 harddrive?
If anybody has insights or experiences of the other above mentioned harddrive i'd gladly hear from you. Which would you get and why?
    Thanks for your help!

When you have spamassassin of os x server already running it is simple to upgrade spamassassin. I never had any problems - tested on three tiger - mailservers.
Simply follow the instructions on http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/spamassassin/branches/3.1/INSTALL and upgrade on 3.1.3 (it reports itself as 3.001003) using the terminal and the perl-helper-app MCPAN .
When doing this the first time you may respond to the questions asked, but you can also choose you are not ready for a manual configuration. This does not interfere with amavis, clamav or anything else.

how can you overclock the video card? i've read that apple has underclocked the video card, so that the fans spin slower and quiet down the machine. stats on other machines say that the card runs at 470MHz(GPU)/470MHz (RAM). MBP runs at 310MHz(GPU)/ 278MHz(RAM). although, i don't want to install windows and download ATI Tools to do it. even if i wanted to i can't because i don't know where to find a FREE copy of windows with a working product key. any ideas?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   2.33GHz CPU, 3GB RAM

Technically, it is not underclocked... it is clocked at the speed Apple has chosen to be optimal. Because the GPU may be specked higher, that does not mean that manufacturers have to max out the performance. As the MacBook Pro is Apple flagship notebook, they would likely have had a very good reason for setting the speed as they did. Likewise... most processors are capable of running at faster speeds as well... but are set to the speeds they are to manage heat and performance. Notebook processors are very often capable of being over clocked more than desktop processors as they tend to be manufactured to higher tolerances.
I guess the big question would be... Do you feel your graphics processor is not performing well for you as it is? How much of a performance boost are you looking to get by over clocking it? Do you think that performance boost will be worth the extra power consumption that the GPU will use... along with the increased use of the fan for additional cooling?

  • ZDNet: New Utlity to Overclock Mac Pro

Well, they claim you can OC a 2.8GHz mac pro to 3.2GHz safely using this utility.
I've downloaded the app and will post results as soon as I can.
One caveat -- no performance improvement in Xbench (or other benchmarks) but the article seems to address this and suggests a stop watch to see the real-world performance gains since the Mac clock is tied to the system clock.
    From the article:
+Unlike Windows, Linux and many Hackintosh versions, Mac OS uses the bus clock speed as the time source. It is compared with real time when booting up. Nor does time correction by means of the Mac OS NTP daemon succeed: It simply no longer works with a large discrepancy between the bus clock and real time.+
+Whereas programmers of the IBM PC XT had to be forgiven for using the bus clock speed because of inadequacies of its Intel 8253 timer module, it should be reasonable to expect more from Apple, who now only offer computers with modern HPET timers. After all, multimedia applications use the HPET module. So videos do not run faster after overclocking.+
+The only option for "normalising" the time of the Mac Pro again is to restart without switching off the computer. ZDNet Clock is fundamentally "reboot-proof". But there are a few snags. The latest series of the Mac Pro (Mac Pro 3.1) can indeed be overclocked in the ZDNet test up to 3241 MHz while remaining stable. But a reboot without crashing is only possible up to 3178 MHz. Carefree overclocking fun does not exist beyond this frequency.+
Here is the article and download to the utility:
    http://www.zdnet.de/enterprise/mac/hardware/0,39038647,39192217-1,00.htm

I tested this interesting little utility earlier, but unfortunately my Mac won't go above 2.84GHz before it falls over. I have tried this 4 times and the second time it froze at just 2.828GHz. The other failures consisted of the screen greying from the top, and the machine informing me it would need to be restarted. The fourth attempt I increased the fan speed to 50% (extremely noisy in the very quiet environment I live in!), and it went to 2.842GHz before it just froze.
I was running the console throughout, and saw no warning of the impending failures.
I have 8 x 1GB RAM, so all 8 slots are filled, and the utility I run under widgets always shows significant temperature differences between the memory slots, not huge, about 20ºF. The memory consists of the 2 original Apple 1 GB sticks and 6 x 1GB from OWC.
    P.S
If it's not clear, this is the Jan 2008 model MacPro3.1!
    P.P.S
I'll try taking out the extra memory later today and retesting to see what happens

  • Older intel mac display problems (x1600)

My mom has an intel imac (the version before the black/aluminum kind) and it had very minor display issues with Tiger (very infrequent horizontal lines). They were all resolved with further point releases of Tiger.
After upgrading to Leopard she has had numerous problems, all revolving around frequent and numerous horizontal lines. They sometimes get so bad that the current window is almost completely obscured.
Here is a flickr set of images that show the problem and the display specs. I know that was happening to users with newer imacs and x1900s, is this happening to other x1600 users?
Any ideas on what is going on? I told her to call apple, but her warranty has run out and she feels uncomfortable calling because she is not a technical person (exactly why I told her to get a mac—I have egg on my face now). Should she downgrade? Can this be a hardware problem?

Hi everyone, i have bought an iMac 20 with a core 2 duo 1 GB ram and an ATI x1600 (a white one, because the screen quality is better than the new iMac 20 alu)
and i've some display problems. First i was on Tiger and i didn't noticed any problems but as leopard came out i rapidly upgraded to it and then came problems with the display.
To make short, the lower part of my screen is lagging anormaly. When i drag a window or even the dock's animations are slower. And it doesn't occur on the upper part of my screen, windows can be dragged smoothly, there is no lag even if the CPU is working at 100% (like on every normal mac...).
I've noticed there is a little bump when i'm dragging a windows from the top to the bottom of the screen, it's like the window enter another area.
I've of course checked a lot of boards on the www, so i've tried a lot of things, my card ATI X1600 128mo PCIe is fully working with core image and quartz extreme.
Some people said to wait that spotlight finished to index, but it's done and the problems are still there.
    Time machine is off
I don't use coverflow and i've tried it, it doesn't change anything.
I've also re-installed Tiger and, wo-ow the problem is still there, especially when all is up to date.
It seems that, the problem come from the last firmware update, i don't know if this firmware update was done for improving compatibility with bootcamp or leopard but for me it has added this strange display behavior.
I've also tried to turn off quartz extreme, and it's even worst, worst on the lower part again but no changes on the upper, everything run smoothly.
As i didn't noticed it when i used my mac for the first days (on Tiger and without the firmware update) and on windows with bootcamp there is still no display problems at all, i keep thinking it's not an hardware problem but a software (firmware, display on Mac osX) problem.
It should be solved by a new firmware or Mac os upgrade until then i have to do with it.
By the way, does anyone knows if there's a way for downgrading the gpu firmware ? (when i try, it say that i didn't need it), it's the only thing that i havent tried.
Thanks in advance, and i beg your pardon for my pittyfull frenglish :s
