Overclocking XP 2100

Well sometime I plan on overclocking my Athlon XP 2100.  I messed around with just changing the FSB because it is locked so I can't mess with the multiplier.  I could only could get it to run at 140 FSB stabily which is like 1.85 gigs.
First question, why can't I get any higher on the FSB?  Is it just because I need to lower the multiplier?  Then, will the wire trick work to unlock it?  I heard that was only for 2400s.  Last of all, what have you guys gotten your 2100s up to, and what are your settings?
I plan to get better RAM on my birthday so it doesn't bottleneck the processor.
Thanks in advance.

takki, there's no difference in stability whether fsb overclocking or multiplier overclocking.  at least from everything i've encountered.  a multiplier overclock is useful cause it only runs your processor higher.  fsb runs your ram and mobo high.  so basically if your mobo does 133 fsb and ram only is pc2100 than multiplier overclocking will get you higher.  there's no reason you can't combine the two though.  a higher fsb will get you better bench mark results and performance increase than an increased multiplier.
LFN_FAN, that temp is way to high.  buy some arctic silver 3 and reseat the heatsink.  what heatsink you got by the way?  maybe that's the problem.

  • Newbie Athlon xp overclocking question

I have not been in the habit of overclocking processors since the early pentiums (when it was simple multiplier changes), and have a question about modern athlon XP's
How do I know how much I can overclock the processor (an Athlon XP 2000+) safely, and which parameters on a K7N2G-ILSR board can cause significant damage ?
What performance increase is likely, and is it worth it  ( I know we sometimes push it just cos we can...)  )
Is there a newbie guide to overclocking somewhere that i could refer to ?
    Thanx
    Brummieman

The MOST interesting question is still not answered though.... what effect does the overclocking have on "true" applications?
Overclocking my 2100+ on the K7N2-L to 13*166 oviously catapulted my proccessor benchmarks up to the performances between 2400+ and 2800+, depending on the test, the results in 3d-mark went up from 8000 to 8500 for exsample even though you get the same result already with a fsb of 150 due to the lower performance on higher temperatures, but the results in sandra were quite outstanding (compared to the standard settings.
The use in application I still doubt at present (when do we really use our performance???)
ripping a DVD to SVCD with DVDx saved me something between 7 and 15mins for exsample, I do not see the use in running my system on the edge for that, as i stated before, I just wanted to see what is POSSIBLE....
I now run my system with fsb 150 again, which showed the same temperatures (idle and after 10 3dmarks) as with standard 133.
    What did you guys experience?
Are you sure he should go high enough for the syastem to crash completely so you need the 100mhz setup???
I`d think slowly rising step by step, run tests watching the temp readings until you get the first faults is safer and you feel like a scientist lol! OK, your methode has the advantage of  the adrenalin kick

  • KT4 Ultra and XP 2100+ Overclock

Curious if anyone is trying to OC a 2100+ on a KT7 Ultra mobo?  I just got a chip from NEWEGG (XP Rev. B) and I am having some trouble getting it to overclock.
I see there is a newer bios (mine is one version old), so I will start there.
    Thanks.

    Premus,
I agree.  I would say there is nothing wrong with my motherboard, too.
When I had a 1800+ on it, I ran at 166x11 (1826MHz).  Now for some reason, I can not run a 2100+ much past default?  Why not?  Why has MSI tech support not replied if 5 days to my e-mail?
I have seen forum posting of individuals have the same trouble with the same chip.  I have read magazine article stating the board does not have strong overclocking capabilities.
So, I think it comes down to this. I think my MSI board is excellent for running a stock cpu.   If want a board with STRONG overclocking ability, then buy something else (Epox, etc).
    Go here:
    overclockers.com CPU database
Now pick an AMD cpu (say 2100+).  Count the number of Epox boards.  Count the number of MSI boards vs. Epox boards.  Or better yet, look at the number of Epox boards at the high end of the list vs.  MSI.

  • Trying to overclock kt3 w/ xp 2100+

    Hey,
I'm new to all this overclocking stuff.  I have a kt3, athlon xp 2100+, 512 mb corsair pc 2700.  My psu is an Antec smart power 350W.  At this point, all I can do is push my fsb speed from 133 to 140.  Anything past that prevents my system from POST and I have to clear the CMOS.  I tried unlocking by shorting the L1 bridges, but obviously it didn't work since i only have few multipliers, 11-13.  I have flashed the BIOS already to the most recent.  What are some ram timings that I should set since I have memory that is meant for it?  My cooler is that valman 6000 flower from compusa, if its not good enough let me know so I can take it back.  Please give me some advice to start with.
    Thanks

Hey mbrogz3000, your 2100+ CPU cannot overclock much more than it's already running at default (1.73GHz).  I'd say the most it can do is 140MHz x 13.0 which you've already tried giving you 1.82GHz. Getting a good watercooling kit will only give you 1.90GHz at most. If you get an extreme cooling rig such as the Vapochill PE: http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDAw which runs your CPU at sub-zero temperatures, you'll probably get around 2.2GHz. However, the Vapochill can cost you over $500US when all is said and done. If you had a liquid nitrogen set-up you can probably get close to 3.5GHz  ) ... of course you'd need to constantly fill in the LN2 while the computer is running. If you want to unlock the multipliers, I suggest you go here: http://www17.tomshardware.com/howto/20011112/athlonxp2000oc-03.html even though I'm not a fan of Tom's Hardware to say the least. By the way, do not refer to Tom's Hardware Guide for any other sort of information as he offers bias information.
If you would like to be a computer geek, I suggest you go to http://www.hardocp.com and http://www.anandtech.com daily. After a few months of browsing through their site, you'll become a pro in no time.
Just remember that lowering your multiplier and raising the FSB will not make your CPU overCLOCK more. You'll simply just raising the bandwidth (FSB) the CPU is communicating with your motherboard while your CPU runs at the same clock speed.

  • Help me Overclock! :) KT3 Ultra-ARU & Athlon XP 2100+

Been trying some things out, and reading a LOT of stuff on overclocking, but still kind of confused by some of it. Wanted to see what you guys think I can do with the following:
    MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU
AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (Stock AMD Heatsink & Fan)
1.0 G (2 512 sticks) of RAM (Kingston ValueRAM) (With Thermaltake aluminum RAM cooler on one stick, with an attached fan that blows over both sticks.)
    MSI Geforce FX 5200
Just wanted to see if anyone had any success with this particular combination. It will be cooled by fans, and this is the case I have: http://www.xoxide.com/xviper.html
It has fans blowing right over the AGP and PCI slots, as well as a fan on the front blowing over the hard drives and an exhaust fan on the back of the case.
Here's some pictures if you need them:

    you are welcome mate.
if CPU became instable increase CPU Vcore with one step.
get a copy of Orthos to check CPU stability:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=99013.0
set priority to 7, and 1st test (Small FFT's) when error appear there increase CPU Vcore with one step and retest.
I'll keep that in mind. Got the FSB at 155 now - gona start moving slower.
Got another question if you don't mind - You said to force the memory clock to 133 - i'm not sure how to do that. It seems locked. Here's my options for the SDRAM stuff in the Bios:
Configure DRAM Frequency: SPD or USER
    SDRAM Frequency: HCLK/HCLK+33/SPD
    CAS# Latency: 2/2.5
    Row Precharge Time: 2T/3T
    RAS Pulse Width: 5t/6t
    RAS to CAS Delay: 2t/3t
    SDRAM Bank Interleave: Disabled/2-way/4-way
    SDRAM Burst Length: 4QW/8QW
    SDRAM IT Command: enabled/Disabled
    Fast Command: Normal/Fast/Ultra
Now, when Configure DRAM Frequency is set to user, I can mod everything in that menu - however as soon as the FSB is set to 166 the SDRAM Frequency can only be set to HCLK - the other options disappear. But, even at 165 it can be set to HCLK, HCLK+33 or SPD.
Not sure what to do there. And, are they any other options you would reccomend changing in that menu?

  • How do I overclock my Athlon XP 2100 T-Bred?

    Here is my system:
    MSI KT4V-L (MS-6712) Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2100 T-Bred CPU (currently 266 FSB, 1.7 ghz)
    Two 256MB DDR-Ram Sticks PC2100 Kingston ValueRam
    1. I hear I can overclock my CPU to 2.1 ghz. How do I do this?
    2. Are there any heat concerns?
    3. Will my memory sticks have to be replaced or adjusted?

    Hi,
another thread, no  :D  this time ...
Netherscourge: your memory will definitely be a limiting factor ...
As for the "Overclocking Partner": manufacturers are more or less forced to advertise in such a way nowadays (and mostly the board will not be the first component to give in, also); I seriously doubt however that MSI will take responsibility for fried CPUs or charred RAM  )

Download the latest Detonator4 Drivers from the nVidia Website. Install them.
Delete the file msicpl.dll from your windows directory.
Use notepad to make a new file and put in it what I quoted below and then save it with the .reg extension.
    quote:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARENVIDIA CorporationGlobalNVTweak]
    "Coolbits"=dword:ffffffff

    "NvCplEnableAdditionalInfoPage"=dword:00000001
    "NvCplEnableClearViewPage"=dword:00000001
That will open all the extra options in the Detonator4 Drivers including the Core and RAM Speeds for your GF4.

  • Help me overclock plz

    sup guys...
can u guys gimme some tips to overclock my cpu...i have an amd 2100+...i wanna get the best out of my computer...can u plz help

Just a little confused, you say you have 2100+ but you equipment list shows a 3000+ cpu.  The are several programs you can use to help set up you BIOS to oc the cpu and fsb. You can do it manually with the mobo you have and you can start by setting the fsb to 175 and multiplier to 10.  These are low numbers but they are good starts.  Then if you want to go higher on the fsb, increase it by 5 but watch your temps on the cpu in PC Health of Bios.  At some point the unit will not boot up if you go to far.  Then you will have to reset your CMOS.
The easiest thing to due is download FuzzyLogic 4 or Core Center and let them get you into a starting range.

  • Overclocking blues

Hey, I am having some "difficulties" and wondering if anyone here can offer some insight. First, I'll go over the hardware.
    AMD Athalon XP 2400+ (Tbred)
    Coolermaster HHC-001 HSF
    MSI K7N2-L motherboard
2x 256MB Corsair XMS PC3200 LL DDR (the good stuff ;-)
    Leadtek GeForce 4 Ti4400
WD JB100 7200rpm drive ("special" edtion)
    Vantec Stealth 420W PSU
    Lian Li PC52 aluminum case w/ 2 92mm blowholes
    Okay, now the questions-
What's up with dual channel?  The instruction manual really doesn't say much of anything about dual channel DDR in it at all.  I thought this motherboard supported it, but running Sandra says that my memory bandwidth is just slightly ahead of PC2100 (stock FSB).  I have my DIMMs in the 0 and 2 slots
Overclocking.  Unforunately, every time I try to change the multiplier the bios won't post, and I have to change 2 jumpers to reset the bios and go again.  I have tried upping the core voltage and this doesn't help.  Stock you are running 133x15=2000.  But even 166x12=2000 it won't post with or without an increased vcore. Do I need to use the wire trick?
As far as overclocking, my CPU seems to be running pretty hot.  Should I be concerned with temps 50/56 idle/load?  The Coolermaster is a pretty good one and I used Artic Silver 2.  Thanks.

    Thanks for the info.
What I meant by the 2400+ producing more heat is actually a fact.  The higher the rating, the more heat it produces (in watts).  Therefore an 1800 tBred will be much cooler than a 2400 tBred (all other factors being equal).  I wasn't trying to tell you that my system was better or anything. (even if it might be   )
I'm getting a Vantec Aeroflow, should work well and be quieter.  As soon as it comes, I'll lap it, wire trick, Arctic Silver III, and I should be good to go, thanks!  I'm looking forward to getting it all running well.  I'm looking to get 200x10.5 (2100 MHz) to run stable and smooth.  I could OC more but for everyday use we'll see what temps I'm getting First.
    ***sidenote***
My case is pretty cool. I have an aluminum Lian Li PC52b modded with two 92mm (blowholes) clear/red LED fans pumping out roughly 96 cfm (total).  These fans are situated two inches above the HSF and RAM.  Also an 80 mm intake blowing across my HD. So with 2 on the vid card and 3 on the Vantec Stealth, I have 9 total fans.  :D Yeah, its pretty loud but will get better when I nix the HHC-001.

  • Overclock problems

I have the KT4AV with a 2400XP CPU.  When after first getting the chip and mobo i played around with different setting the FSB.  At first this worked fine and i was able to get the CPU running at around 2100.  After attempting to change the settings back to standard i was unable to boot at all, and had to reset the CMOS to get the machine to boot up correctly.  I have since tried changing the settings and get the same results a boot sequence that either doesnt even start or i get the screen where it displays the hardware and checks the memory and then it stops.  Anyone have any ideas?

What do you mean play with CPU.  Im an overclocking newbie, i didnt want to get to hands on with the chip.

  • Desperately needing help (2100 XP+ not recognized)

    Hello all,
I have a XP 2100 + proc on a KT 3 Ultra motherboard and until now it worked fine.
The thing is that I recently had to format and now it seems that the main board does not recognize the processor properly !!
For the mainboard, I have a XP 1500+....
I tried to overclock it, no change apparently (always 1500+)
I tried clearing CMOS memory (as read on the manual), nothing changed
I tried flashing the BIOS, nope didn't work either.
What I noticed is that when I load the "performance parameters", it seems to recognize it correctly but now Windows XP doesn't start anymore....
I tried also to overclock it myself (by change slowly the voltage), doesn't work + doesn't start.
I'm a bit desperate now. If anyone ever had this problem, please help, I don't know what to anymore.
PLEASE   IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO GET IT BACK TO NORMAL ???
    Thanking you all in advance

It is pretty important you unplug the computer when clearing CMOS. No el. should remain in motherboard.
and if I might add, to make sure that there is no electricity left in the system after you unplug the power cord hit the power button on the front of your case and the will drain the rest of the power out.

  • KT3 Ultra2 Overclock Problem.

    I recently upgraded from a KT3 Ultra to a KT3 Ultra2.
On the KT3 Ultra i changed the FSB to 140, overclocking my 2000+ to 2200+ @ 1.76, stable. But on the KT3 Ultra2, changing the FSB to 140 equals 1.75 not 1.76Ghz, so the post displays 2000+ not 2200+. Does anyone know why?

I don't see why you're so fascinated with the 2200+ figure. Having a 10MHz jump to make it say 2200 instead of 2000 isn't going to make it gain the actual performance difference between the two(133MHz) . The 2200+ is 1.8GHz btw. You're closer to 2100 speed. If it's possible(dunno if you're limited by 12.5MHz from the cpu, one from the memory, or what) just bump it up to 141fsb and you're set.

  • KT4VL: RAM for Overclocking FSB?

Friend of mine may get KT4VL, and is thinking of PC2100 RAM. The reviews at Newegg indicate users with 2100 only reaching about 140 on FSB, while one user with PC3200 getting 176 FSB with locked CPU. Your thoughts on grade and maker for RAM?  ?(
    EDIT: Anyone tried Crucial PC2700?

It is not necessarily the RAM limiting the fsb or overclocking...if you want some 2100, get some that overclocks well such as crucial 2100 and samsung...
You may actually end-up paying roughly the same for some good 2100 versus some 2700 cl2 overclocking as well...
I know some folks overclocking as hell their 2100 but they've got some known and good one such as crucial...One of the guy I know bought some cheap 256mb 2100 at bestbuy for $35 (no-brand) and it was able to OC it as hell so I guess it depends

i'm trying to overclock my cpu and the fsb from 166 to 200.  but when i set it to 200 in the bios, on restart the screen stays black, no sounds from the system speaker, no hdd activity, nothing.   when i reset the bios its all fine, but i can't overclock it past a 2800 (the cpu itself is a 2600).  my ram is corsair value select (pc 3200).  i had that problem before but i had pc 2100 ram.  now what can i do to overclock it to a 3200?

You may need to increase your Dram volts to 1.7 or better.
Also try to increase Cpu volts to 1.7
try 179,183,185.......I didn't have good luck at first either .
    Just remember your jumper settings.
You might  someday  try a modded Bios that really helps overclock the K7N2 boards. But you may not be ready for what happens if you mess up.
