Overclocking XP2400+ on K7N2-L

I have a K7N2-L and an XP2400+ CPU, with 2x256MB Twinmos PC3200 RAM. I bought this CPU/RAM combination as I read in several reviews that the XP2400+ was a good overclocker and the K7N2-L allowed the adjustment of CPU multipliers without modification of the CPU. So far I have managed a modest FSB overclock up to around 150MHz FSB but so far the only multiplier setting I can get the board to POSTwith is 7x. The board allows manual multiplier adjustments from 7x to 13x, (I assume the standard multiplier is 15 for the XP2400+). Do I actually have to modify the CPU to unlockk the multiplier or is there a bios setting/jumper that I am unaware of that enables unlocking? I would ideally like to get the FSB up close to 200MHz with a multiplier of between 10 and 12, mainly to take advantage of my fast memory.

Hey, sorry to disturb this talk,
i have also a k7n2g-l with amd xp 2400 and an Hac-v81 xdream,,,,
But i have supertroubles with the installation of win xp on this, is it possible to tell me wich driver you used to get it started right without graphical troubles etc...
i want to use the onboard card because my old gforce 2 wouldn't help i suppose,....
I would be very glad if i can have the driver version and are they from the MSI site or Nvidea....
THX
and maybe in a few years i can follow your discussions

  • Overclock: XP2400+ @ 2.4Ghz with Volcano12

Just got the Volcano 12 today, installed it and plugged all the wires etc....
First thing i did was turn the speed control down to the lowest setting, then straight into bios at boot.
It was at 2.3ghz and i could see that it was staying steady at 60*C, but this is with an ambient temp of around 35*C+. (It has been soooo hot here, its just Bull**** weather, today we had 39.5* C after 2 other days at 40*C ggrrrrrrrrrrr)
Im at 2.4G's 1.80volts, so plenty more volts to add if any hidden instability pops up later.
    SISOFT gives quite an incredible score;
    Dhrystone ALU = 9099 (720 points better than a 3200+)
    Whetstone FPU = 3785 (320 points better than a 3200+)
    PR Rating        = 3487
Im sure this thing can hit 2.5Ghz, will post if successful.
As for the V12, 5500rpm is rather audible, but nothing bad if your case is under the desk. Sounds like about 5 ordinary case fans running at 2000rpm each.
Turn it down to 4000rpm though, and case fans are louder than the V12, and cooling is only 1-2 degrees warmer. Basically 5500rpm is like a turbo, the sound kicks in after 5000rpm.
Add ambient temperature into the equation, the only time you will need 5500rpm is new overclock settings & testing, and a heavy few hours of gametime probably, and you wont notice the sound at 5500rpm while gaming, if your case is under a desk and on the left side of yourself (so the sound travels away from you).
If my CPU can do 2.5ghz or more, than the V12 gets a 10/10 from me, for affordable price and performance.
Hell, you could even make it better with some lapping and AS5, which i havnt got either.

I should add its 8:30pm and the temp is 30*C. (ambient probably same)
Its idling at 51*C @ 5500rpm (its really not that annoying at that speed, low pitch whirrrrrrrr)
I need to make a profile up, just do it now.

  • K7N2 - L bad overclocker?

Hi all.  I just got my 2400 mobile in and am having problems overclocking.  I cant get past 8.5x200 with a vcore of 1.55.  My friend says its my mobo and thats its bad at overclocking but I think hes wrong.   Does anyone here have problems overclocking with a K7N2-L?  What can I do to overclock my cpu more?  Jumpers?  Anything?
    I need help.
    Thanks in advance.

I reached my max.   My mobo with its 1.8v vcore max and Geil value mem are holding me back. With some better mem and some more voltage I know I could go higher. With my temps I see no problem hitting 2.6 or 2.7., but I cant go any higher.
After some tweaking I found a sweet spot at 12.5 x 200 = 2500mhz with a vcore of 1.8v.   Idle temp is 38C and 44C after an hour of Far Cry. I would highly recommend anyone who wants a nice oc to get the 35w 2400+. Even me, a person with the worst luck and only decent parts was able to hit 2.5ghz.

    Resetting the cmos
    Resetting the bios
trying allsorts in the bios, everything i can think of to get it to do anything but run at 133 x 13

what speeds it boot at 100 fsb ,leave multiplier on auto, and if it is 13 you must not touch it or it will never boot
it might be the 200 fsb version with a 10.5 multiplier

  • New Performance Bios

Come on MSI lets get a performance bios designed for overclocking on the K7N2 series of motherboards or I will be forced to look elsewhere.

I too would like this k7n2 motherboards to be more overclockable (i.e. a higher vcore setting to at least 1.95 or so and fsb over 200 would be also nice)... Other motherboards can easily surpass these setting.  I've been happy with msi for the last few years but i just would like to be able to push my processor a bit more... so if the comming bioses didnt correct this in a few months most likely i would switch brands...

  • Happiness is a Silent Boost

I used to have ordinary white goo on a stock heatsink....
    Idle temps were:
    Speedfan 1 61 deg
    Speedfan 2 43
    Speedfan 3 34
    Load (Prime95) temps
    Speedfan 1 66 deg
    Speedfan 2 50
    Speedfan 3 35
So for Christmas I bought myself a Thermaltake Silent Boost, a tube of Arctic Silver 5 and three 80mm Vantec Stealth case fans, one to replace the old rear exhaust, one for the side, and one for a top blowhole.
    Idle now:
    Speedfan 1 52 deg
    Speedfan 2 34
    Speedfan 3 28
    MBM sensor 1 28
    MBM sensor 2 34
    MBM sensor 3 52
    Load (Prime95) now:
    Speedfan 1 56 deg
    Speedfan 2 39
    Speedfan 3 30
    MBM sensor 1 30
    MBM sensor 2 38
    MBM sensor 3 56
With two extra fans the noise level is about the same as previously, and a shutdown problem (like, it didn't want to shut down by itself, but needed the off switch to be held down for about four seconds) seems to have been cured.
    Happy Christmas to me....

    the fan ontop.
is it blowing or drawing ?
its easier to draw warm air out than to try to push in cold air from the top.
hot air goes up by itself.
is your temp in celsius or farhenheit?
if its celsius i think 56 is a bit high under load.
i got a overclocked xp2400 with a crappy heatsink and crap thermal paste and gets 55 celsius in a hot room.

  • Strange problems and processer compatibility questions

i have the K7N2 DELTA - ILSR and i have had some problems, ive replaced the borad twice be cause it just died for no apperant reason. One day i was usng it and my webcam was in the second slot on the top of my mainboard and sumthing happend and i couldnt get a picture thru my cam so i switched ports, worked fine no biggie. well i just got an mp3 player, its a nextech, i plug it in my pc and it lagged alto and when it did show up in my computer it would regester it as not there even tho it shows it, i know the mp3 player is fine cause it works fine on my laptop. is my board fuzzeled again or am i just having compatability issues? If so i will exchange it for a gigabyte board i thing cause there reliable and ive had exprence using them.
My other question is i have the amd athlon 2500+xp and i was wondering of the 3200 would work fine on tm K7N2 DELTA - ILSR with the nforce 2 chipset
other than thoes problems the board is great and plays all my games very smoothly.
i also have another question is my Geforce fx 5600 worth keeping or should i upgrade to the 9800 pro or wait for the x 800xt to come down in price?
    thx.

a delta can take up to xp3200
but you would be better of with an xp2500 and overclock it instead.
k7n2 has noise sensitive usb ports.
do you have an usb2 hub you can connect to the motherboard and then connect the usb devices to that one and try ?
seen many cases where this worked.
did you read the moan guide ?
its very hard to do something without a complete picture of what you got.
i have seen people having trouble with usb devices for many different reasons.
how strong is the psu ?
i want the amps not the watt as they can show VERY wrong.
is written on a label on the psu. 3.3v 5v and 12v.
have you tried http://www.memtest86.com to check memory ?
    k7n2 is memory sensitive.
is usb2 enabled in bios or only 1.1 ?
k7n2 is a very sensitive motherboard but when you get it to work it works like a dream.
mine has been up and running 24/7 since i bought it last year and most crashes i have is when i try to run 10 year old dos games which xp dont like.

  • Freezing problem...

Well I've had my MSI K7N2-Turbo board for about 2-2 1/2 months and a brand new AMD Athlon XP 2500+ that I got with it. Now, for some reason when I start my computer up and sign on AIM and open Windows Media Player after a few minutes my computer freezes then it will allow me to click on something else and freeze again, eventually forcing a manual shutdown using the power button. There is no eveidence of overheating by touch when I open my case and look things over and I entered the BIOS and checked the CPU temp. and it stayed at 98 degrees farenheigt (sp?). The weird thing is that it just started doing this Sunday, and yet some times it doesnt do it all...I'll be able to do everything fine with no freezing. I dont run any intense software or games, just AIM, Windows Media and occassionaly Word and MSN Explorer. I never had these problems before so its something obviously new. I dont know what it could be, maybe a power supply issue??? My Power Supply was brand new too with all my stuff, its an Antec 300 watt ps (model SL300S). All AGP and PCI cards are in there slots tightly, Memory is in its slot tightly and securely. I'll list my specs below...I am not overclocking.
    MSI K7N2-Turbo Motherboard
    AMD Athlon XP 2500+
    Corsair 512mb DDR Ram
    Samsung CD-RW [48-24-48]
Western Digital 30gb hardrive (also relatively new)
    Seagate 15 gb hardrive
    Soundblaster Audigy platinum PCI
    ATI Radeon 9000 AGP

Sorry Im not that good with computers so what are IRq's and how do I find out what is running on what? I know its probably in the BIOS somewhere...but my situation is weird...I start up the computer sometimes and it runs fine like right now...its been up for like a day and a 1/2 with no problems...if I restart it though it would probably crash within 10 minutes of use...odd. Thanks...

  • Athlon XP 3000 recommended voltage?

Whats the recommended voltage for an athlonXP3000 that isnt overclocked on a K7N2-DELTA-L board? any ideas anyone?

    All bartons (non-mobile) are 1.65v

  • Mobile Barton XP2400+ Overclock on K7N2 Update

    For Whoever's Interested -
Couldn't get >2000mHz with my mobile Barton XP2400+. Proceded as follows:
    1. Went to http://www.arcticsilver.com and read instructions for proper application of Arctic Ceramique. I know there's some people laughing !
    2. Reinstalled Vantec CCK-6040H heatsink/fan after applying ceramique per Arctic Silver's instructions.
    3. Also noticed the CPU RTD was pushed down touching the board, so, lifted it up to touch bottom of cpu.
    4. Rebooted into Windoze; cpu temp 39C at idle via MBM.
    5. Incrementally increased Vcore from 1.55 to 1.625 (in steps), rebooting, and looking at temps.
    6. Raised multiplier to (8x) 16x with Vcore at 1.625. Booted fine. Ran some apps. Good. Temp 46C immediately after Win98 load and decreased to 41C at low load/idle.
    7. Raised multi to (9x) 17x w/ Vcore still at 1.625. Booted. Received BSOD while loading Win98.
    8. Raised Vcore to 1.650 and booted with 17x multi. Temp 50C immediately after loading Win 98. Now 40-43C as I write this.
Guarded optimism ! Still need to run Memtest86 to verify stability.
Why does the cpu temp rise so dramatically when in bios and right after OS load ?
    Mark

When I 1st installed the mobile Barton (Monday) with no wire trick; I set the multi to 9x in bios and posted at 9x133fsb. I made it up to 12.5x133fsb (a bit over 1662mHz). A 13x multi posted at 600mHz !
So, removed the cpu, installed the wire jumper, and reinstalled the mobile Barton. I then booted with a 9x multi and it posted at 2261mHz, but, crashed. I then dropped the multi down to 7x and have been running at 2000mHz until reinstalling the heatsink/fan with Arctic Ceramique properly applied. Now running with a 9x multi. WCPUID reports a 17x multi and 2271mHz as does cat /proc/cpuinfo in linux.
So, maybe I'm misunderstanding, but, I did need the wire trick for the mobile Barton - its multi is factory set at 6.

  • K7N2-L Overclocking 1700+ B Core Help

    Hello all,
    I've got a K7N2-L and a 1700+ B core (1.6v), I've managed to overclock it to 12.5*166 with the bios set at 1.625v(bios reports 1.67v).
But I can't seem to break the 166fsb barrier, I've got two (dimm 1+3) pc2700 generic cl2.5 ram modules in running at 2.7v (2 2 2 3). Everything runs totally stable at 166 but at 168 or 170 I get an unstable system. I reduced the memory timing very low settings when testing just incase that was a factor.
I've tried reducing the multiplier to 11.5 and increasing the fsb but no luck, increasing the cpu core voltage to 1.8v and 12.5x180 to jump right over the 170 fsb range but a failure again. The failures are 3d mark 2001 failing and going back to the desk top. But with 180fsb I couldn't get it to boot fully into windows.
With 166 fsb I just use the stock cooler and it's stable, with all the other tests I use a big desk fan pointing in the open case as well and the cpu temp stay under 40 degress.
I can't help thinking that if I can get 166 at 1.67 volts stable the cpu has a lot more in it and something else is limiting the fsb (esp as I can't get over 166 with lower multipliers). Are they any bois/cpu hacks that allow me to access the higher multipliers so I can at least try and get my cpu MHz up?
    My system specs are:
    K7N2-L with 1700+
    Coolermaster 3000+ amd approved
PCI raid card running 2x80G stripped disks
MX440 (not over clocked) soon to be a 9800 pro when it arrives
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks!!!

    Hi wonkanoby,
Yep I've upped the voltage by 0.025 as well, it is showing at 1.66-1.67 too, that seemed to do the trick to get 166*12.5.
I've found someone else who has the same ram and can't get it above 166, so it looks like the ram is the problem. If the ram is the problem do you think.
    166 memory, 200 fsb and multiplier 10.5 (2100MHz)
    overall would be slower than
    166 memory, 166 fsb and multiplier 12.5 (2075MHz)
I've read that having the front side bus and ram frequencies synchronised makes a big difference so it could well be the case that 166Mhz for fsb and ram is the better option.
If this is the case does anyone know anyway to access the higher than 12.5 multipliers? I'd like to try 13 or 13.5 multipliers. I've had a good look around the internet and other forums but I can't find any clear information on whatI need to do to get the higher multiplier ranges.
    Thanks.

  • Can't overclock a K7N2 Delta2 LSR?

I have the K7N2 Delta2 LSR v1.0 board with 3GB of PC2700 memory and Athlon XP 3200+ processor.  The PSU is a Antec 400w.
I have tried several different overclocking methods, and none seem to work.  The D.O.T. didn't work at all, not even in Private mode.  The computer hangs when it gets into Windows.  I tried just increasing the FSB to 202MHz with the memory on "Optimal", and Windows still hangs.  Am I doing something wrong, or does this processor just not want to go any faster?
    Bryan

The nforce2 chipset likes the memory controller and the CPU FSB clock to run at the same speed.
So by increasing the FSB to 202mhz, you're also increasing the DDR clock to 202mhz (which equals DDR404). As your memory is only rated as DDR333, its no wonder its failing.
Athlon XP3200+... which one, the 333FSB or 400FSB version?
Also, as you are running 3GB, also be aware that best performance is gained from using just two identical matched sticks in dual-channel mode.

  • Overclocking K7N2 Delta L advice please

I was wondering if someone could make my life a little bit easier and help me out with overclocking.
I read the sticky about it, but I am still confused about the voltage etc.
    I have a K7N2 Delta L motherboard,
    Athlon XP+ 2400 cpu
    512 stick 333 MHZ ram
    512 stick 400 MHZ ram
    Powercolor Radeon 9600Pro video card
What is the safest settings in bios and motherboard jumpers to go to in regards to overclocking?
I am kind of hoping that someone else who has the same setup has overclocked and they can just tell me what settings they have got so I can try to copy lol.
I know it's cheating but I don't feel very confident so I thought it would be safer this way
    Thanks in advance

Also you can try raising the vcore slightly and maybe get a few more MHz.
This one I could'n't do because the CPU VCore Select & CPU Ratio settings where both set to "By H/W" so I didn't know where to start with that one..
I was just wondering, how far can I go with overclocking or this about it?  I mean like I decided I wanted to learn how to do it and all that but I never really had an idea how far I can Overclock it to.
In the bios move down to where cpu vcore says  By H/W  and use the page up/page
down key to select the vcore you want.  I would raise my fsb 1MHz at a time till I
reached max fsb before I'd raise the vcore but as you raise the vcore you will also
get higher cpu temps.  With the multiplier @ 15 I don't think you can go too much
higher on fsb with that cpu.  I'd go as high as I could remaining stable then back off
a couple MHz. In my opinion, with a cpu locked multiplier, the 2500+ Barton with 11
multiplier is the best overclocker. Most will do 200 fsb at stock 1.65 vcore no sweat.
Then the 2500+ in a sense becomes the 3200+
