  • Overheating Qosmio x505 - Fixed!

My Nividia GT 250m GPU on my x505 q850 was idling at 84'C.  I was worried that it could be a costly repair but found a simple cheap solution.  Simply reverse the airflow and remove the dust.  The dust got in there from one direction to reverse it.  Now my GPU idles at 64'C.  The normal airflow is in through the bottom fan and out the back heatsink.  So reverse it with a strong current of air.  See steps below.
    Instructions:
-Get vacuum cleaner with suction hose attachment
    -Get canned air
-Turn laptop off, turn it upside down, and take out battery
-Turn on vacuum cleaner suction hose and stick it on the bottom fan of the laptop on one side (one fan on each side)
-While holding the vacuum on the fan, on the heat sink on the back of the laptop on the same side blast the canned air into the heat sink moving back and forth on the heat sink to evenly clean it.  This will break loose stubborn dust.
    -clean to satisfaction
-repeat on the other fan and heat sink on the other side of the laptop.
-Suction other vented areas if you desire.
    -Enjoy!

I wish I had thought to join this forum 2 years ago!  I have a Tosihba M305-S4830.   At present it is all but dead.  The temperature rises from 64 to 90 degrees within 15 minutes and then shuts down.  I am going to try your solution and hope I can get more life out of it.  Was this a permanent solution?  How often do you have to do it?

  • Upgraded T500 with T9600 CPU - now overheating

I recently upgraded my T500 laptop from P8600 to T9600 CPU. Now I have a problem with the CPU overheating and the laptop shuts down after reaching critical temperature of 100 C. "Idle" (5-10%) temp is usually around 43-44 C.
I used the Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste and first I thought I may had applied too much of it (judging by online pics compared to how much I used). So I opened up again and I could see the previous paste actually had overflowed over the mirror area, so I cleaned it and re-applied with about half the amount. But if anything, it has only made it worse and now overheating even more often.
Both times I have waited the break-in period of over 200 hours, but it made no difference.
If I use cpuburn and burn both cores at 100% over several minutes, then the temp peaks and is stable at around only 80 C. The problem is during normal usage, where CPU fluctuates up and down near 95-100%, then it peaks at 96 C very quickly. So it makes me wonder if it may be a fan control problem?
Another thing I noticed, core 2 is always a lot cooler (15-20 C) than core 1, so if core 1 recorded max 96 C then core 2 usually recorded at 80 C max. Is this normal?

There are instances of this behavior in systems with bent, curved or unevenly pressured cooling surfaces. There is also the possibility of a faulty CPU. Lastly, the overheating problem might be a result of bad power management from the operating system, or again, bad application of thermal paste, too little pressure of the contact plate of the heatsink on the cpu, or a bent contact plate.
Since nedenom says he has been carefull with most of  these aspects I think there are three possibilities left:
    a) faulty cpu
b)Improper cleaning and application of thermal paste
c)problematic power management (which could explain overheating but not core's delta)
I would as a first step remove again the cooling system, clean all parts thourougly with isopropyl alcohol 99% and then apply only the smallest quantity (less than a grain of rice) of AS5 on the middle of the cpu before replacing the heatsink.

Thanks In Advance

    Hello again talha-mustafa.
So you've updated the BIOS, set the fan to always be on in the BIOS, cleaned the vents, opened the notebook to clean the insides, reapplied thermal paste, and are using a cooling pad but the problem continues to persist?  This covers all of the solutions I know of for this sort of issue.
At this point you have two choices.  You can rule out software issues at this point by performing a HP System Recovery.  This will take the notebook back to factory conditions so you would lose your data if you don't back it up prior to the recovery.  This document covers the recovery process.  However, this has only a slim chance of affecting your problem.  The best thing for you to do in this case is to have the notebook examined in person by a technician.  Since the notebook is out of warranty is would probably be quicker to take the notebook to a local shop.  However, if you want to speak to HP about the issue you can give them a call.  The number is 1-800-474-6836 if you're in the US/Canada.  Users in other parts of the world will need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get their region's contact information.

The Intel CPU has a TJunction of 105 degrees Celcius. Reference: Intel web document
Be concerned if the temperature gets within ten degrees of Tjunction.

  • HP G6000 Overheating

Hi, I have a two year old HP G6000 that's been getting steadily hotter. I opened it up last week to replace the thermal gel and clear out the dust - but it's still hot!
I've checked and the battery's not on the recall list, Speedfan gives me these temperatures:
    GPU 64C
    HDO 53C
    Temp1 70C
    Core 50C
And when I open a memory heavy app
    GPU 69C
    HDO 51C
    Temp1 70C
    Core 58C
I don't know how to interpret these results - any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hello,
I decided to sacrifice a little bit of performance for the sake of cool temperatures and silent fan. I have HP DV6, with AMD Turion RM-74 and HD4650.
So, Yes, You will loose up to 15 percent Your CPU power, but heyh, this processor is so fast that You will barelly notice the change. You will still watch HD content with 720p and everything else smoothly. Note, that gaming will be harder part but consider Your laptop not as a device created for heavy gaming.
At one point or another, during games, someday Your notebook inevitably colapse. It's just not meant for gaming, no matter what the specs are...
    No more overheating.
So, how to reduce Your notebook temps:
    (i) Power Options -> More power options,
(ii) Balanced plan -> Change settings,
    (iii) Change advanced power settings
(iv) Processor power management -> Maximum processor state -> On Battery - 50 percent, Plugged in - 85 percent.
    (vi) Save changes and close.
Now, mine temperatures are - idle 48, heavy load - 57, extremelly heavy load (HD 720p content) - 62-63. (At the moment my CPU cores are at 47 celsius).
CPU still works fast, not so fast as it is working on 100 percent, but hey, fan is silent, and if You want gaming - go to Your desktop pc, leave notebook for lighter tasks, even though the notebooks specs are high,
it simply cannot handle the heat.
    Best regards.

  • Overheating of the hp dv6 3049tx while using it on the lap.

I purchased my hp dv6 3049tx less than a year ago. Since the very first day i noticed the left side of the laptop gets warm. I assume that happens because of the cooling system being on the left. The  problem is that even when the laptop is used on a table or a lap it becomes unbearably hot. I checked with other hp dv6 models and they all have the same issue. I have also heard of cases when the laptops got so hot that they popped open. What can I do about it.I am certainly not keen on cooking my lap.

    Hi,
I got same problem but i took it lightly.I bought same laptop Aug 2010.
15 Days back i got booting problem and seen motherboard damaged.I asked customer care they asked for new board which i have to give full price bcus warranty period ended last month.
If u have waaranty period go service center and change the motherboard imdtly.

  • HP 550 Laptop Overheating

Hi, I currently have overheating issues with my HP 550, when i had bought this laptop gushes of air used to come out of the side air vents, but know theres hardly any air coming out, the fan usally comes on at the logon prompt with an AC Adapter, but when im on battery it comes on when i spend more than 10 mins on the computer, the fan temps reach up to 100 Degrees. Any help would be appreciated!
By the way my warranty is expired.
    Computer Specs:
    Intel Celeron 530 @ 1.73Ghz
1 GB RAM (1014MB due to memory allocation)
    111 GB Hard drive
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3

I have a similar problem, so I hope someone can help.
My temperature doesn't quite get to 100º, but when I am doing something a bit intensive the fan kicks in and the computer sounds like it's taxiing for takeoff. I imagine the fan / CPU / heatsink are clogged with dust as the air flow is pretty pathetic. Therefore I decided to get in and clean it.
I've seen the instructions for removing the keyboard and switch cover on the HP website but I hit a problem. I can get as far as loosening the back edge of the switch cover but my cover doesn't slide off effortlessly like in the video. I've applied as much force as I dare but it really feels as if something is holding it. I can lift the back edge by about 15º and that's it.
Can anyone offer advice on how to get the switch cover off? Or an alternative way to get in to clean the fan and CPU?
    Thanks in anticipation.

  • Laptop Overheating

My laptop is a Hp envy m6-1105dx notebook pc, Windows 8.1, beats audio and AMD Vision A10. I have had my laptop over a year and just recently ha it started overheating. I need my laptop for work. I am an insurance agent.  I have coolsense and it seems to work wose now too. My drivers are up to date, including coolsense. I want to know what could be causing this, from what i see the vents seem relatively clear. My laptop is not under warranty.

    Hi Kwildinsurance,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP ENVY m6-1105dx  Notebook and issues with overheating and coolsense. Here is a link to overheating as this might be the cause of the shutting down. If the Notebook has dust on the fans it could be overheating. If that does not help at the end of this document it shows you to do a hardware test. The final thing you should try is to restore BIOS default settings.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Notebook overheating while plugged in only,

this is happening when i play hard games, when i play with the battery, it runs better and not that hot,  but im not going to play everytime with the battery ofc :/
ive tried changing the gpu performance in the catalyst, in PowerPlay changed from "best performance" to "best battery" with AC, but nothing changed, still overheating, getting 80+ degrees, my new cooler pad isnt helping much,
please, help me with this trouble

    Roflthansa, welcome to the forum.
This is a difficult problem to solve.  The truth of the matter is that laptops are less than desireable for hard gaming.  The only suggestion that I have is to use a small fan.  This may give you some relief.

  • V570 LESS THAN ONE YEAR OLD: Mainboard replaced twice, overheating, broken HDMI. And that's typical!

Is this a lemon? How should Lenovo handle this?
Hello. From very beginning, shortly after purchase, V570 overheated (80-90 degrees Celsius, with screen shots of core temps as proof). Problem went on for several months, burning leg at one point. I called tech support, no call back and no repair scheduled. Kept notes, dates and times of all contact.
I had purchased next day on-site repair service for three years. So when no one called back about problem after ten days, I called back and raised a little pleasant ruckus. Got some action.
On-site tech installed more powerful fan. Helped out with high temps. Tech recommended motherboard to be replaced, since it was probably fried from overheating.
Then, the HDMI port no longer worked. Lenovo took more than a week on this repair. Parts were sent to a technician who was no longer in business, so parts were in Fed Ex limbo. I spent 10 hours on phone (5 hours to the Philippines) trying to straighten out the mess.
Problem escalated. No one from North Carolina or Texas ever calls back. No. Call. Back.
You can imagine my trust factor with Lenovo is zero now.
New mainboard installed. Works fine. Tech leaves. Two hours later, screen is completely black. Nothing. Dead darkness dead dead. Cannot power on. No tricks with power button, recovery button or anything else working.
Called support again about dead machine. Sending out another mainboard for another repair. I do research and realized this is the bad bad bad motherboard that *everyone* here is complaining about. Lots of other dead black screens from it. So, again another two hours on the phone.
Then, I call tech in Philippines back, and say, hey, this is the mainboard that is riddled with problems -- I really do not want to go through this again. They recommend another mainboard, but it's a slower one -- an i5 dual core instead of quad core.
At this point, we're three or four mainboards in, in terms of repairs that have happened and parts coming, on a machine less than a year old.
At what point does Lenovo make the financial or business decision that the best option is to replace the machine rather than paying for four motherboards and on-site repairs?
And, BTW, when I pay hundreds of dollars for a 3-year on-site next-business-day repairs, I mean ON-SITE, NEXT BUSINESS DAY. That's what my contract says, in writing -- I've got it in front of me. That doesn't mean 2-3 business days that all the techs are saying to me.
I've even had several techs say I need to send in my machine, and I say, uh, I have on-site repair, and they say they "need to get approval" to authorize on-site service. **bleep**??
This is the worst customer service and the poorest machines I've ever encountered.
I also have a 2-month old y570, that arrived with a broken battery bay and still the touchpad is as stiff and unusable
as Day One.  Both the lower housing/battery bay and the touchpad have to be replaced or repaired.
I'm gathering that others are having as many problems with their machines as I am having with mine. And even when you pay for good service -- you don't get it.
IdeaPads bear no resemblance to the greatness of ThinkPads or the IBM of yesteryear.
    Lenovo, please help.

Unfortunately, the carrier that you purchased it from is where your warranty channel is. I wish I had a better answer but that is how the system works.
As I mentioned, even if you are within the warranty period and with the same carrier, the warranty is probably void since the device has been disassembled and repaired--they can tell when it's been apart. I've heard of this mirrored issue before and it's usually a hardware problem, as you've already been made aware of by the repair facility you took it to.
I hate to say it but you are probably out of luck on this one. Wish I had something better to tell you.
