Overheating and fan on Macbook Pro.
Hi, I bought a new mac book Pro several months ago. It was perfect and still runs perfectly, but recently I noticed that its starts to get very hot and the fan start to kick in, which never happened before. It happens whether I run processor intensive app. like final cut or something minor like Firefox. Fan never kicked in before.
I am wondering what it could be? Left side speaker side of the laptop especially gets hot. The rest of the laptop is warm. Thanks a lot
MacBook Pro, 2.33ghz Mac OS X (10.4.7) 2GB RAM.
Also the left side of the laptop has more things to heat it up such as the hard drive and power port. My laptop also gets hot on the left as well but i do not really mind as the fan changes speed when the temp changes accordingly. If you want to manually control the fan speed you can use a utility such as SMC Fan Control or Fan Control. I just like to leave the fan settings as is because I don't want to rely on third party software to fix something that was meant to be as is but I have tried Fan Control and after I removed it the fans became back to the default settings.

I recently took my macbook pro to an apple store to adress an overheating/overactive fan issue and they told me nothing was wrong with my computer. However, I am still experiencing major issues with the fan and overheating. Every time I use my computer, even if its for a few minutes, it gets very hot and the fan sounds like it's about to explode from working so hard. Any suggestions for an overheating/overactive fan problem on a macbook pro? Please help.

How can I tell if my fan on MacBook Pro is working properly? It seems to be running often and the laptop feels hot!
Isn't it awesome that after you spend 2500$ + on a laptop you need to also become a computer technician in order to keep it working. The fan in my MacBook Pro runs all the time and the computer is also very hot all the time. I always try to make sure it's not sitting on a flat surface that might make it run hotter. I'm running 10.6.8. Is there anything I can do to fix this? When should the fan be running? Should it run when I have more than one program running at a time? Is the MacBook Pro designed to only run one program at time? At the moment I'm watching a show via Firefox. There are no other programs running, the computer is raised off the table, the fan is running at about half the speed it usually does, moments ago the fan was going full bore. Google Browser was open, iTunes was open, text edit was open, but none of them being used - I was using Firefox and watching a movie online with browser window on fullscreen. Anyone got any suggestions? Should I just enroll into a university and begin my studies as computer technician?

Mail hoging CPU and heating up MacBook Pro

Since more than week my MacBook Pro, running Mac OS X 10.5.8 shows strange temperature behavior.
As soon as I open Mail (3.6), the temperature of my MacBook Pro rises (with as much as 25 to 30 degrees celsius) up to 85° and more, and the fan activates. When I close down Mail the temperature falls back to normal (+/- 55° C) and the fan shuts down. This happens within seconds.
I have SMS Fan Control running on the MacBook Pro, so I can see the actual temperature.
When I open the Activity Monitor I see that Mail uses around 99% of the CPU when it's sitting idle and when it's checking for new messages it uses up to 110% of the CPU. In Console I don't see anything concerning Mail.
I tried rebuilding every single folder in Mail but to no effect.
This is a new behavior. I have owned and used the MacBook Pro for almost 3 years now and I used to run Mail in the background permanently without any problem until last week. As long as Mail is open, the fans are working which is very annoying.
When I create a new user account on the MacBook Pro and open Mail, the problem does not occur. In the Activity Monitor I see that mail takes 0,0% of the CPU when sitting idle and around 25% hen it's downloading new mails.
Does anyone have an idea what causes this behavior and how to fix it?

IvanWell, this is a complete puzzle. At this point I have no simple solution. I can offer only the option of cloning your system to an external drive, if you can. Do not worry about any possible problems at this point. Use a good backup utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SilverKeeper - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - or you can use the Restore option of Disk Utility.
Now comes the "hard" part.
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the Erase tab, then click on the Erase button.
Now quit DU to return to the installer where you will reinstall Leopard. Upon completing the installation you will reboot to the Setup Assistant. At the end of the setup you will configure your initial admin account. Be sure to use the same username or short name that you were using. This will assure you not have any permissions problems trying to transfer from your cloned backup to the reinstalled system.
Upgrade the new system using Software Update to download and install any required updates to return you to 10.5.8.
Now when you open Mail you can recreate you email account after which you want to select Import from the File menu. You will have an option to import from Apple Mail. Choose that option, then navigate to the old /Home/Library/Mail/ folder on your cloned backup drive. Look for the Mailbox folder and select it, then click on the Import button. This will import your mailboxes. This only works for POP accounts. If you use IMAP for your mail then after you set up the account all your server-based mail will be there.
You can similarly restore your Address Book, calendars, etc. However, third-party applications may need to be reinstalled. And, applications support data for third-party applications will need to be copied from the backup to the new system. They are usually found in /Home/Library/Applications Support/. And, you will want to restore preferences from the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder on the backup. -
I just bought a Micro-DVI to video adapter to try and hook my MacBook Pro 13" that I bought in mid 2009 to my old TV (svideo), the adapter doesn't seem to fit any of the connections on my macBook pro, is right adapter?

To the OP, this does work, but is not the cheapest, and as it appears that Apple no longer sell an SVideo adaptor cable 3rd party it will have to be. -
How can I set up Cinema Display as a main screen and leave my macbook pro as a second screen instead?
I learned that the Dock is positioned at the chosen edge of whatever Display is positioned farthest to that side. E.g. for the Dock to be positioned on the right side of the Cinema Display (instead of the right side of the MacBook), the Cinema Display must be oriented (by dragging) to the right of the MacBook monitor on the "Arrangement" tab of the Displays Preference Panel.

I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and now my MacBook Pro won't start up.
I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and moved the system.kext and two others to my desktop and deleted the originals and now the MacBook Pro won't start up. All I get at start up is the apple icon then a bunch of text shows up part of which says Mac OS version: not yet set. then the apple icon turns into the power icon and tells me to turn off the computer. I've tried reinstalling from the install DVD by holding down option when powering on and selecting the install DVD and it just goes to a white screen with the apple icon and stays like that. I didn't have the disk utility on my Mac before this happened because I deleted it to make room on my computer a while ago so I'm not sure if that's why it won't load the install DVD but anyone who knows the solution to this with out going to get it repaired would be greatly appreciated. Never mind my dad just found the original install DVD and that worked. Before I was using an install disc that Apple sent me for another issue I was having, but thanks for replying so quickly and trying to help on this Thanksgiving day!!!

I have installed Thunderbird on my IMac and on my MacBook Pro. I have already completely set up Thunderbird on my MacBook Pro. How can I transfer all of my settings, bookmarks, etc., from my MacBook Pro to my IMac? Also, can I automatically keep both copies of Thunderbird synched so that changes on one computer are recognized on another computer.

Providing specifics on all the ways to do this will take more time than I am willing to spend here these days. You can do some of this with Home Sharing. You can transfer the entire library from one computer to another, If you do that you can delete what you don't want from the transferred library.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder. If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
You do not want to use a new AppleID. Change the AppleID on the new phone to the old ID. Purchases made with one AppleID cannot be transferred to a different one and it will be a royal pain to manage two Apple IDs.
Change iTunes Store account on an iOS device - Log out of your current account with Settings.app > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) > tap on your AppleID. Log in with a different account. Just an adapter to change the US plug style to the one in the country you are going to. The AC charger will do the rest. It is rated for 120-240 volts and will adjust on its own.

Repair
