Overheating iPhone 3GS

I haven't been paying too close of attention to my battery; it may be a shorter life span. I just always seem to be close to an adaptor and keep it charged.
But I have noticed the phone getting pretty hot at odd times. Anybody else have a pattern of overheating on theirs?

A phone that gets warm when not being used has a problem, usually a program trying to send or receive data unsuccessfully. This can be a corrupt mail file or mail settings. First try to isolate the problem. Is it an installed app, mail, or Safari? To check for an app go into settings. If you have a Notifications setting try turning it off. If this fixes the problem one of your "push" apps is running out of control. If it isn't an app look at mail next. If you have push email (Exchange, ME or Yahoo) try turning the account off, then cycle power on the phone. If this fixes it delete the push account, reboot, and add it back. If you still have problems post back and we'll try to find other possibilities.

  • IPhone 3GS overheated, screen kind of burned.

My iPhone 3GS was overheating 2 nights ago, the screen kind of burned for a few hours. I tried to cool it down by turning it off. Turned it on the next morning, screen went back to normal, but some of the icons are smaller than the other. I have Nikon Transfer on my MacBook, it would normally sync my iPhone photos. iTunes sync is working fine, but Nikon Transfer won't sync anymore. Would be okay if I still sync it through my MacBook? Would it affect my MacBook Pro?

    It won't hurt your MBP.

  • My iPhone 3GS displayed a message that it was overheated, now it wont turn on except for the Apple logo, and iTunes doesn't recognize it!

My iPhone 3GS displayed a message saying it was over heating and to turn it off.
I turned it off and the next day that I turned it back on, it wont go passed the main Apple screen.
It had a message to re-connect to iTunes, then that the IMEI and SIM were unknown.
Now it wont turn on at all!!

  • Anybody else just really disappointed with iPhone 3GS?

so i just traded up my 3 year old sanyo katana (sprint) flip-phone (which worked perfectly, without a hitch, ever) for a new iphone 3GS (at&t) and frankly i'm pretty dissatisfied with the switch. yeah, it's a fun toy, but phone service and coverage is poor and i'm experiencing most of the problems/issues posted on this forum: ridiculously poor battery life, overheating, app icons going haywire, car charger not working, crappy compass performance, inexplicable crashes and reboots/restarts etc.
if this thing worked precisely as advertised it'd be the best electronic/consumer product i've ever purchased, but as it stand now it's just sort of a nuisance. why advertise a revolutionary product, with revolutionary capabilities if everybody (including the manufacturer, apple) is telling you to turn off all it's revolutionary functions and capabilities just to keep the battery charged more than 6 hours?
    weak. just weak.
i just want a functional, as advertised iPhone. is there an app for THAT?

Well, I also have had no problems with mine. But, comparing this to small flip phone is really unfair. We have to remember that this phone is a small computer and has many uses and functions that it dose over your basic small flip cell phone.
Compare it properly against another touch screen smart samsung phone and you will see that it is much more stable and easy to use.
I have compared it to nearly every other smart phone and it always shines brighter. The more a device can do the more that can go wrong with it.
I father just recently bought one of those sit down and drive lawnmowers and it has had many problems, while he still loves that his old push rotor lawn mower works like a charm.
Check yours out at apple and see if there's something that can be done, and peroidicaly power off and on your phone.

  • Iphone 3GS keeps shutting down.

I know there are lots of topics in here about this, but I just wanted to explain my own situation and see if it's any different.
As of late my Iphone 3Gs has been shutting down. I will be using the phone as normal, and it will have a decent amount of battery life left, but it was just crash. I'll be in an app, playing a game/chatting or safari and the phone will suddenly return to the home screen. The little battery will go red and show 0% (when my battery life was 80% just seconds ago) and then shut down.
I will have to turn it back on normally and everything will be fine again and my battery life will return to what it was previously.
This used to happen just once or twice a day but now it is happening frequently and it's really starting to frustrate me. I thought maybe it was my phone overheating because I had too many applications open and so I now make sure to keep all of my applications closed but the problem is STILL happening.
I have 4.2.1 software and I am always making sure to keep it updated.
I haven't dropped it or gotten it wet or anything.
I am going to do a reset and see if that fixes the problem, but does anyone have any other suggestions or are you experiencing the same problems?
It frustrates me that I pay all this money for a phone that is now barely serving it's purpose. I shouldn't have to worry that it's going to shut down on me in the middle of a call or while I am doing something important.
    Help!

    4.2.1 is bad.
I have an iPhone 4; I just upgraded to 4.2.1, then my phone started doing the same thing. I noticed first with the iPod app, it would play a couple min then go to the home screen. Then Pandora, play a couple min then go to homescreen; I had it on a dock at work and it would stop, then a couple min later turn on and start playing the iPod song from the beginning, same cycle over and over. Next with texts and Safari. I don't make a lot of calls, but went to get a # from my contacts and the phone app would not open.
I tried soft reboot, hard reboot, resetting the stuff in settings. The people at the AT&T store said they hadn't seen it yet. They put me on the phone with Apple; I guess I had way too many 'multitasking apps' open. I shut them all down, but it would still not allow me to access the phone.
Apple said to restore to factory settings, and then try to use phone app. I just did and it allowed me to call someone. I'm now loading it with the back-up just before 4.2.1- wish me luck.
    1) Ideally you should use the device for several days without restoring your backup to prove the issue is truly resolved.
    2) If restoring as new corrects the issue it is NOT an iOS 4.2.1 issue, it is a problem with your backup.
    3) There is no reason to restore from your backup, you are simply re-introducing the problem that you were trying to correct.

  • Video out from iPhone 3GS to TV.

Can I use the standard (3 phono plugs on the end) video out lead I already have to view keynote presentations from my iPhone 3GS on my TV/Projector?

    Same problem here.
I can't get any video out of my faithful iPhone 3GS running iOS 6.xx.
I have been browsing Apple discussions for solutions and most of them seem to point out to a faulty Video Composite cable. This is not my case.
I can rule that out 100%.
Old iPhone 3G running ios 3.1.2 works just fine as well as does iPhone 4, with the same cable.
I have tried with a friend's TV and cable and iPhone 3GS and we have identical issues.
(different cables and phones, same issue).
Please note all testing has been done with genuine Apple Video composite cables.
So this points out clearly to a iphone iOS issue combined with hardware.
It appears that starting from iOS > 5.0 video output has been disabled on earlier iPhone models prior to 4.
It would be nice if Apple could issue a Knowledge Base document on the issue as that would save many people further testing and waste of time.
This document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4108? isn't really complete enough as it stops at iphone 4.
Has anybody the ultimate answer on this issue?
    Are there any known work-arounds?
    Thanks and regards

  • TS1538 I cannot sync my iPhone 3GS after upgrading to a new computer and installing iTunes

i am trying to sync my iPhone 3GS to a new computer. I downloaded and installed iTunes and copied over the iTunes folder into My Music. Unfortunately iTunes on the new computer does not recognize my iPhone.
    - The old computer was running windows XP OS 32bit. My new computer is running Windows 7, 64 bit.
    - I have installed iTunes on the new computer. Windows OS recognizes the iPhone but iTunes does not. I have uninstalled and reinstall iTunes a few times now. On one reinstall, i recieved the following messages:  "an iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again".  Upon trying again, i recieved this message: "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because an invalid response was received from the device".
every other time, nothing happens other that Windows prompting that the iPhone is detected. Any suggestions appreciated.
    thanks, Singletrack200

Made a new folder and that solved my problem

  • I have a 5 yr. old iPhone 3GS, I can't back it up to my laptop, it's not working, but wondered if i can back it up to her laptop, if I create a new user account name, w/out losing her info?

My 5+ yr. old iPhone 3GS is on it's last legs. I desperatly need to "back it up" ASAP, so I can buy a new iPhone, and I really need to be able to transfer my 5 years worth of info to a new iPhone, (a 4S). The computer I used to back my iPhone on when I first got it no longer works, so I was wondering about being able to back my iPhone up to my daughters laptop, but she also has an iPhone 3GS, that's already backed up to her laptop. I know you couldnt back up two iPhones up to one computer, (at least that's what I was told, years ago), but I was recently told by an "Apple" rep that I could "probably" back my iPhone up to her computer without losing anyone's info, if I created a "Secondary User Name Account" on her computer. I'm not comfortble doing this unless I'm reassured more than being told that it's "probably" safe.
Does anyone know what options I have, and if this idea would result in one or both of us losing our info, if we tried to store two iPhones "back up info" on one laptop?
My phone's barely working at all, but I can still access my info, (for now, at least). I really need to do something now.
Could anyone who knows how this works please give me some info?
    Thanks in advance.

First, you don't have a 5+ year old 3GS. The 3GS has only been around for under 4 years. In fact, 5 years ago there were NO iPhones; the original iPhone (2 generations before the 3GS) came out on June 29, 2007 - not quite 5 years ago. The 3GS was released June 19, 2009.
That aside, you can sync multiple phones to one computer - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495. boogeyman is wrong. It is 100% safe to create an additional user name on her computer, log in with that name, and back up the phone. See this for details on what you want to do: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109

  • IPhone 3gs will no longer sync to iTunes on Windows 7 x64

My iPhone 3gs worked fine up until the last 2 updates. Ever since then, the iphone is not even recognized by iTunes. When I go under "devices" in the advanced settings I can see the backup for my phone. Why can't it recognize a phone that it's already recognized? I installed the latest 10.4 and still it's not recognized. I know the computer sees it as it's listed as "started" and "automatic" under services in the admin tools. I've pretty much tried every work around I can think of or seen online and nothing has worked at all. Really have no idea what to do next.
If anyone has any idea how to resolve this issue, I would greatly appreciate it! My setup is below:
    Windows 7 pro x64
    iTunes 10.4
    iphone 3gs
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Ok! So I just came across this randomly in another thread from user Kempas (thanks a lot!). It totally fixed the problem so I thought I'd repost it!

Ok, I'm assuming everyone who is having trouble with Windows 7 (64-bit? mine is) has tried the following solution I found over at en.kioskea.net posted by a guy called Steve78545 (hey, you got to give a dude his due).
It's maybe because Windows 7 uses a MTP driver instead of the USBAAPL by default, and what you need is an 'Apple Mobile Device USB Driver' which you might not have in 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' (check it and see). If you haven't got it, as good ol' Steve78545 suggested:
Update the driver by expanding 'Portable Devices' from the list, right click Apple iPhone/iPhone and select 'Update Driver Software'. Then select 'Browse My computer...'
Copy the following path and paste it in - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers - then hit 'Next'.
Let the thing do it's...thing an it should work. At least it did for me, so I hope it helps a few people out!

  • I upgraded from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 6.  Everything converted fine until I deleted an app in error.  When I downloaded it from iTunes, my account is no longer recognized by the app's host servers.  Can I go back and re-sync one app from my old phone?

I upgraded from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 6.  Everything converted fine.  Yesterday I deleted an app in error.  When I downloaded the software it from iTunes ( did this many times on the old 3GS), my account is no longer recognized by the app's host servers (Playtika), even though it did after the initial conversion.  Can I go back and re-sync just one app from my old phone?

Try deleting what is called the iPod Photo Cache.

  • My iPhone 3Gs is now no longer a recognised device on iTunes after I downloaded the new iTunes with iCloud software, but it does recognise my iPad2??

My iPhone 3Gs is now no longer a recognised device on iTunes after I downloaded the new iTunes with iCloud software, but it does recognise my iPad2??
I run both Mac and a PC and have iTunes on both, which has previously recognised my iPhone. I had updated my Mac with the new iTunes software with iCloud and updated my iPad2 just yesterday. I then wanted to do the same with my iPhone today, but my Mac wouldn't recognise the device so I tried it on my PC, which recognised the phone but told me I needed to update my iTunes and this in turn wanted to update my iPhone software. After completing all this and restarting, my iPhone now shows the iTunes icon with the USB plug pointing towards it, obviously wanting me to plug it in to my computer to re-connect with iTunes, but now neither of my computers recognise my iPhone and my PC states an 'Unknown Device'. My Mac doesn't even see it. Can anyone help as I really need to get my phone working?? Thanks

Hold down the Home and Power button for 20 seconds. And try to update again.

  • IPhone 3GS no longer recognized in iTunes and does not charge via wall

I upgraded my iMac to iTunes 9.2 when it came out.
My wife then upgraded her iPhone 3GS to iOS4.
Since then it is not recognized in iTunes and does not charge via the wall adapter.
I realize this topic crosses over with several ongoing discussions, but there are no 3rd party peripherals involved here.
The only major changes to our set up have been the itunes and iOS upgrades.
The battery is running down, any ideas to fix this, or other similar experiences welcome.

Went to the Apple store and they replaced the cable.

  • HELP! iPhone 3GS stuck in recovery loop and iTunes gives error message" iPod update server can not be contacted"

As I said, it's an iPhone 3GS (never jailbroken), iOS 4.1, PowerPC G4 OS X 10.4.11, iTunes 9.2. I have had the phone since new, never had any issues with it and am at my wits end trying to figure it out. I have seen many different solutions to this exact problem, but none have worked for me. Anyone have any ideas?

This is what I posted to someone else having an update issue... Just for your information:
I having the same issue about the and iTunes says "The iPhone cannot be  restored at this time because the iPhone software update server could  not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable.". I've had the  iPhone  3GS since it came out. It was working fine until I just tried to  update  it. It has NEVER been hacked or jailbroken. WE AND A FEW OTHERS are  having  the same issue then it is more than likely that this is an  update issue.  I took mine to the Apple store and the tech tried to  update it and he came to the same problem and told me he couldn't  update it. My assumption is that we are not the only one's with this  issue and that if  there was a way to update it to the update before  this last one it  might be a solution. I don't know how to get the  previous update. Apple  probably is aware of the problem, and hasn't  come up with a solution yet. Or, enough people haven't complained yet.  The tech suggested that  there might be something wrong with the phone  itself, but that couldn't  be since it was working perfectly before I  updated it and others are  having the same issue. It is highly unlikely  that a lot of people are having the same hardware issue all of a  sudden at the same time. Apple/iTunes needs to fix this... and hopefully soon
Also:  I can update or restore my iPhone 5 and other iPhones so it is not an  issue with my firewall or other software on my computer. No one touches  my iPhone or my computer they are secure, locked all the time, and I  have no jailbreak software on my computer (Apple tried it and they are  clueless at the moment from what I can tell).

    Hi gofroggy08,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
It's possible that the iTunes software didn't update properly.   Try the specific steps below for the iPhone first:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
If the issue is not resolved, you may need to uninstall iTunes and all of it's components, and reinstall the latest version as explained in this article:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
I hope this information helps ....
