Overlap or hole in image with pen tool

hi guys am pretty new to illustrator just got it because i need to make some t-shirts out of drawings
so i have been busy with the pen tool and am just wondering how you for instance make a hole in youre path (sorry if its pourly explained dunno all the therms) for instance i uploaded a picture i want the hole in the R to be part of the it so if i use a 3d effect you see the shade and on the S i need the upper end to overlap and the one down underneath. hope you guys understand dont really know how to explain in english sorry :s
thanks alot in advance cheers!

CappuciniBaby,
For the R you may select both paths (outer and inner) and Object>Compound Path>Make.
For the S you may:
1) Cut the path at the ends at either side of the central part, using the Scissors Tool on an Anchor Point on both sides of the fill,
2) Move the newly formed end paths below and beneath the central part, this is done in the Layers palette/panel by dragging up/down;
3) Group to keep the S together.

  • Slow down when processing image clipping in photo shop with pen tool

Adobe cs5 slow down when processing image clipping use with pen tool. The path is applying after few seconds when we draw on the image. My system supporting 4 GB memory with 64 bit.

The main thing i use paths for in photoshop is extracting objects from photos.
Other uses include stroking paths with the paint tools. For example, if you had
a powerline to remove, one could trace the line with the pen tool and then stroke
the path with spot healing brush set to content aware fill.

  • Problem with Pen Tool CS5

    Hi,
I just got Photoshop CS5 and I'm having a bit of trouble with the pen tool - namely, I can't see the path I'm creating.  In CS3 I could clearly see the line between two points but in the new program the line is nearly invisible making it very difficult to create the path.  Is this a setting I can fix?
    thanks

I was having 32 bit while I upgraded from CS3 to  CS4. The only problem with CS4 that time was with pen tool.Though I cannot precisely recall , I can say it t was very lazy and very frustrating and this was resolved totally after shifting to 64 bit.--If urs existing system is 32 bit try with 64 bit

  • How to Extrude a path created with Pen Tool

    Hi All
I have created a path with the pen tool (the brown part), and now I want to extrude it, but it extrudes the whole containing block (See image below)
Now I have tried everything, from grouping to compound paths etc, but nothing works.
How do I extrude my path?
    Thank you

...and Texturized it AFTER the extrusion....
Applied a Grain Texture after the extrusion.
    For clarity:
Always pay attention to the Appearance palette. The order of the items in the Appearance stack reflects the order in which they are applied.
A so-called "live effect" (of which both 3D Effect and Grain Texturizer are examples) is an operation which is automatically re-applied after you make an edit to the object to which it is applied. The effects are applied in the order in which they appear in the Appearance stack, from top to bottom.
    1. Ellipse Tool: Draw an ellipse. Leave it selected.
    2. Apply 3D Effect.
    3. Apply Texturize Effect.
Look at the Appearance palette. 3D Effect is listed above Texturizer, and the whole 3D rendering is texturized.
    4. Appearance palette: Drag 3D Effect to below Texurizer. The unwanted extrusion of the entire texture image appears.

  • Making a split line with pen tool

I am making a map and have stumbled upon a new desire. Is it possible to make multiple paths from one anchor point using the pen tool? The most simple example I can give would be a "Y" - that is with the first point at the bottom, the second in the middle, then adding two separate lines from that middle anchor point in hopes that all three line segments would be a part of the same vector line.
The photo shows what I am working on. The grumbled grey area below the current railroad track is an old rail yard. The anchor point to the right of "Hill St." is where I would like to split/make multiple new lines from. Ideally, there would be a line that traces the northern edge of the rail yard (as is shown), in addition to one that traces the the southern edge that is technically the same vector line as both the northern line and the individual one to the east.
Any help or ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Doug

    Take a look at this:
This was all done by Add New Stroke in the Appearance palette.
To get a clean Y you must make a compound of the 2 paths. You can see this clearly on the upper "road".
This works well for roads in general although multi-level intersections always require some special tratment.
A railway track is only slightly more tricky because of the sleepers.
Depending on how close together you want the sleepers to be, the join will always be more or less problematic unless you are very careful with the positioning of the anchor point on the branch line. Even then you will always get some overlapping.
But like Monika says, you should draw points/a switch (UK/US) there anyway.

  • How to continue drawing with pen tool

    Hello,
Let's say I begin tracing an image with the pen tool. Something comes up 1/2 through the trace job and I need to stop the trace. How do I later go back and begin the trace from my last point and continue on to the end. Right now, all I am getting is new anchor points and lines that do not join with the original trace. Thanks

    skeeter,
I believe it may be time for the list, also for your other issue.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • [bug report] Making selection with pen tool causes 'jittery' edge

When I use the pen tool to create a path, and then make a selection from it and select inverse and delete the background, the result is a very un-even edge not the clean resullt you would expect, however if I make a mask from the same selection it looks fine.
    Steps to recreate
    1. Draw a simple path with the pen tool
    2. Make a selection from the path, with 0 feather and anti alias turned on
    3. Inverse selection (optional, same thing happens if you don't inverse)
    4. Delete the rest of the image
    5. The edge of the image now has an uneven, jittery edge
    compared to mask
    5. Undo the delete
    6. Go to Channel Pallette, and make a mask from the selection
    7. Edge of the mask should be clean like you would expect
You can exaggerate the jittery effect by adding feather the the path selection

Ok please Delete this I've sorted it. The blending mode had jumped to disolve.... but I 100% didn't change it to this myself, I wasn't even in the layer pallette at the time

  • Points added with pen tool before clicking mouse

Has anyone else had a problem with the Illustrator pen tool adding points before you've even clicked the mouse? If so are there any solutions to this problem? I've had to quit and start again because this wastes so much time. Is this  bug? I've also had a problem where Illustrator will sometimes freeze when I open the program with the icon but won't if I open the program by opening an illustrator file. Thanks!

Okay, so here's the deal. I am creating a vector but I can get the pen tool to work the way I want it to.
I will post an image of what I want it to look like, and what it is turning out like.
This is what I want the vector to look like in the end (notice the highlights):
And this is what the vector currently looks like (notice the highlights):
How can I acheive my desired look? I am using Adobe Illustrator CS5.

OK, so have you checked the miter setting in the stroke panel? So maybe play with the numbers there or whatever? OK so that may be the deal. Or maybe not.

  • Rotoscoping With Pen Tool

    Hello Everyone.
I am using the Rotoscoping using the Pen Tool.
I have used the Pen Tool for many years with Photoshop,  Inside Photoshop when I Draw a path over a Selection, I use the Alt-key at the end of each path, to Draw more Paths.
I have noticed, when I use the Pen Tool In After Effects, for example If I am Drawing a path over an object and If I Alt Key on the  point of path It works different than Photoshop.
It Breaks the Path , rather than continuing the path.
    Here Is the Screen-shot.
One Again Thank you very much..

I think Now I know how the pen Tool works In After Effects:
AS I explained In my Original Discussion.  Inside the Photoshop, every time you Alt Click on the path, you can continue Drawing more Path.
In After Effects you don't Alt Click, You Alt Drag the Handle back to the point and continue Drawing more path.
Once you hold the Alt Key and Drag the Handel back to the original point of  the Path. your Path dose not move ,which Is good.
Also, It looks like the Pen Tool gives you a very Close Path over your object, which Is good for a photograph still Image,  But for Video It may be be better to use the RotoBezier tool, to get the smooth look.
Again,  I am very new to Rotoscoping so I cant not say with one Is  better.
Also, this Video Tutorial that was posted,  by Mr. Rick Gerard, was Awesome.
    Thanks.

  • Problem creating vector mask with Pen Tool

Using Photoshop CS5, Mac OS 10.6.8
I'm trying to create a simple vector mask using the pen tool to create a curved line at the top and bottom of a photo. Here's what I'm doing:
    1. Create a new layer and select it.
    2. Select Pen tool.
    3. Choose "work path" by selecting button at top menu.
    4. I draw my shape with the pen tool.
    5. Now comes the problem... I can not select this shape, or assign it a color. When I create a clipping mask, it does not recognize my path. When I throw away the layer, the shape is still there in outline only. What am I missing here? I'm familiar with doing this in Illustrator, but I don't understand how it works in PSD.
    I need some help, please.
    Thanks.

  • Pages 5.1: Annotate with pen tool?

I want to be able to annotate images pasted into Pages 5.1. By this I mean having the ability to circle/underline an area of the image (with a pen?) to draw attention to it. Perhaps 'annotate' isn't the correct term...
Is this at all possible in Pages? If not, does anyone know of a way to scribble over images in another App and then paste into Pages?
While I'm here, how do I paste an image exactly where I want it (ie. where the curser is)? Whenever I paste, it drips it in the middle of the document.
I am using Pages on iMac (2011) running OSX 10.9.1
    Any advice/tips very gratefully received!

Your "Circle" can be a circular shape with no fill and an appropriate border size and color. Use the Arrange tab in Pages v5 to proportionately scale the circle to taste. Send your image to the background, and maneuver the circle over your image, where you want to draw attention. Group and/or Lock them accordingly.
You can position a Text Box or Shape where you want the image using the rulers and blue document guides. Then, do an image fill as appropriate within these containers. Other methods for introducing images into your document offer less control, and will result in image scaling and repositioning.

  • Newbie problem with pen tool: shape not evident on any layer

I am trying to learn the pen tool. I made a line with the pen tool but now I can't find out which layer it is on, and I can't stroke it as I wanted. All of my layers are turned off and the shape still appears. However on searching through the layers there is no vector layer which contains my line. Also, I can't stroke the line as the stroke and fill options are greyed out on my paths panel. I have attached a screen dump to hopefully explain what I mean. I am using CS2 on Windows 7.

Okay thanks and as you can see from the screen dump, I have got the paths window up. So I can see the workpath. But I can't stroke it, the stroke option is greyed out. Also how can I get the path onto a shapes layer? Basically I want to stroke the path so I can show the shape of a roadway on a map. Maybe I am using the wrong method, maybe there is a better way to do this?

  • Problem with Pen Tool contrast...

I noticed this the other day. When I'm using the pen tool in Photoshop CS4, it sometimes takes the color of what I'm using the pen tool on, ie; if I'm working with a picture with a bright green or pink, the path is bright green or pink (see link below) The picture isn't the worst that it does, but if I took a screenshot when it's at it's worst, you wouldn't see anything. I went through all the preferences and saw nothing. I do have the OpenGL acceleration turned on. Thanks for any input!!!
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/32892564@N06/3120591723/

Thanks. That fixed it. I was able to select no fill in the pen tool bar (when pen tool is active), but could not select no fill when I clicked on the fill box in the regular tool bar (unless there is a trick) - all that comes up are color gradients to select.

  • Problem with pen tool, lines and blend tool

    I draw line 1.
Then I break (click the arrow key and then click the pen tool again) and draw line 2
When I finish there is a puzzling gap on line 1 after where line 2 intersects:
Then when I use the blend too the resulting abstract looks like - non-continguous with broken lines:
instead of something of a continuous wave and unbroken lines like:
To me, the problem is clearly the gap show up but I don't understand why it is appearing, when as picture 2 shows, I clearly I'm drawing complete lines.

Thanks. That fixed it. I was able to select no fill in the pen tool bar (when pen tool is active), but could not select no fill when I clicked on the fill box in the regular tool bar (unless there is a trick) - all that comes up are color gradients to select.
