Overlapping coloured objects

I am using CS2 on Windows XP professional.
I want to create a graphic in Illustrator which I can use in a document in InDesign. I want to combine simle objects filled with different colours and where they overlap I want the colours to blend. Then I want the graphic to sit on another background colour (but not blend with it) in InDesign. I have tried different ways of doing this without success. I know it has to be simple - but when you know how.
I would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

Hi Harron. When I was writing the last post, I realised it was somewhat clumsy. What I meant was that each object in the graphic has only one colour; but each object has a different colour. Sorry to be obscure. I hope you enjoy your drink - single or different.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I think I have achieved what I want. I created the graphic in Illustrator. Grouped overlapping objects and used Effects>Pathfinder>Soft Mix and chose a blend of 50%. That has produced the effect I wanted. I then placed the graphic in InDesign and when I select View>Overprint Preview, the overlapping colours look fine and they are not affected by the background colour of the page in InDesign.
I'm happy with what I've done. But I would be grateful if you would let me know if you can see a problem with it. I don't want to get the job back and find it is somewhat less than I was looking for. A possible problem I can imagine is not achieving a clean fit of the colours where they join and overlap - sometimes I notice in pubications a tiny bit of white or other colour where two colours join.
Many thanks for your help. It has been a good exercise for me as I learnt more about Pathfinder which I have not previously used in this way. I was also able to successfully break up the objects and colour the resulting pieces - as suggested above by Philip.

I have tried as many Help topics as seemed relevant, but 'Move Backwards' and 'Move to front' are greyed out.
I have been confident using this technique with Mountain Lion, but now I'm stuck.

Assuming you have Pages 5.x
Click on the object > Toolbar > Format > Arrange > Stay on Page > Text Wrap > None
Now you can move it. It probably was inline and part of the text.
You can not move it under the general body text however, unless you move it to the Section Masters in which case it will appear on every single page of that Section.
You will need to create a Textbox to put your text into and move that on top of the object.

Hi,
Use flow layout in order to avoid overlapping of table on other objects. This flow layout is to be set on the parent container (form/subform) of the table. Put the other objects too into the same container. It will cause the dynamic resizing of the container each time the new row is added.

Overlap to objects, both black, but in the overlapping region color is white

This has bot to be possible, but for some reason my brain just ain't working.
I've got to black objects, let's say circles, they overlap. IN the overlapped portion I want my color to be white, is that possible?

The basic idea is based on the fact that black is white and white is black.
So, do the following:
1. New document
2. On Layer 1, draw a grey filled rectangle
3. Create a new layer above Layer 1
4. On Layer 2, draw two white filled circles
5. Target Layer 2 (click the circle on the right handside of the Layer's name)
6. In the Appearance Palette, add a new black fill to Layer 2
7. While this new fill is highlighted in the Appearance Palette, go to Effect > Pathfinder > Exclude
8. Now, create any calligraphic brush and apply it to a white stroke which you have drawn on Layer 2, overlapping the white, no the black circles.

Overlapping audio objects

after making a new autoload, using logic setup assistant to set up number of tracks, etc. I get a nice fresh audio setup, but when i start to use the audiotracks or audio intstruments, the audio objects gets a little wider, so it´s overlapping the next track/instrument a little bit. It doesn´t help to use the "cleanup" function in the audio/envioment window. Does anyone know this strange and anoying behaveior ? Maybe a work around ?

the only way to have it work without space is if you switch the cables off
because it counts the cable as well so switch the cables of then it'll without no space
i got 2x23 inche monitors and both are on 1680 x 1050 Hz
so on the second monitor i have just the mixer board window or the environment on it
and doubled up my mixer,
so the top row is 64 audio and 8 AUX
and bottom is 32 instrument and 4 Output and 16 Bus
and and i align it with the cable on so space doesn't really kill me, because the more you add plug-ins the more the channels become bigger
unless if you have time to realign or the time when recording then switch the cables off

Just when you thought you could do everything something comes and bits you in the bum.
I am doing a 'simple' animation with various shaps around a screen, two circles mainly. When they overlap, I would like the overlapping area to turn to a different colour? (its animated)
I am totally clueless on this one....any ideas?

I thought of something slightly different than Adam - maybe a bit simpler...
I used a color generator, added 2 masks to it, put my two moving shapes in the mask wells (then turned the shapes back on), set both of their mask modes to Intersect. That way they only work when they cross.

Isolating a coloured object against Black and White background

I would like to spice up some wedding videos that I am editing. I would like to be able to convert a clip to black and white and then colour in 1 single item. For example, make a red rose against the black and white. Is this a case of like painting the rose or using a matte to isolate the already coloured rose (ie. its natural colour)?? Pretty new to AE (version 6.5, btw).

Overlapping of objects...

Hi,
I'm doing an application that has a JMenu on the top and a ScrollPane on the rest of the screen. The problem is that depending where I execute that, the items of the JMenu appears behind the ScrollPane, and obviously it's not useful... Yes, I'm talking about the third dimension of the screen. ScrollPane is in the front and doesn't allow to the user to see the JMenu items, when he click on each category...
Anyone can help me?

Please try to execute this piece of code and you will see the screen with a top bar menu running perfectly. But if you remove the double-slash from the line highlighted between /***/ and /***/, you will see that you are not able to see the item from the top bar menu.
Executing this piece of code in various machines made me realise that in old versions like 1.4.0 there's no problem, while 1.4.2 or .1.5.0 is giving me the problem.

Overlapping Objects

All,
I am working on code which differentiates bright objects in a camera's field of view. Programming in LabVIEW, I have so far been able to detect and enumerate separate objects using LabVIEW's built in function. My next challenge will be to differentiate between overlapping bright objects., objects which will cause contiguous bright pixels with no dark areas in between the objects.
I can identify static points which will always show one specific object, and I can always take my light intensity measurement points at these static points. Is there a way that I can programatically have LabVIEW divide a group of contiguous bright pixels into two or more separate objects? Or will LabVIEW's built-in functions always identify a group of contiguous bright pixels as one object?
If I cannot program LabVIEW to split contiguous bright pixels into multiple objects, I can figure out another way to code the functionality I want. But if there is a way to have LabVIEW return an object array that already has differentiated the objects as I want, it would make my life a bit easier.

I was playing around with Skeleton, and I don't think it will work for me, but I could be wrong.
I am attaching an image that approximates what my cameras will be seeing. What it shows is four equally-sized mirrors tilting up from the ground.
Any thoughts as to how I could get LabVIEW to differentiate these into four different objects?

Reverse text out of spot colour?

Hi there
I have a block of over-printing spot colour out of which I would like to reverse some text. However, the block overlaps some other coloured objects and these must not have anything knocking out of them, meaning I can't just use the Paper swatch for the text. I can convert the text to outlines and punch it out of the block with the Pathfinder, but is there anyway of achieving the same effect while keeping the text editable?
I'd appreciate any thoughts.

What are the order of interactive objects

If you have two interactive objects on top of each other what are the rules regarding which shows up on top.
for instance if you have a MSO slideshow and you try to put a button on top it will disappear behind the MSO on the iPad, I can work round this by putting the button inside all states of the MSO
But are there any guidelines about which form of interactivity out ranks another?

In most instances, the z-order determines which overlay stays on top when overlays are in a stack. In your example, you mention that when you place a button on top of an MSO, the MSO covers the button. That's not my experience. In a quick test, I overlapped buttons and an MSO, and I moved the top buttons to the front and the bottom buttons to the back. Here's what I got:
In this example, DPS honors the z-order. You can interact with both the buttons (even if they're hidden) and the MSO.
When you overlap interactive objects such as image sequences, inline videos, and slideshows, the z-order of the source objects determines which objects move to the front. Activating an overlay brings it to the front of inactive overlays. If multiple overlays are activated, the z-order determines which object is in the front.

Can I add a bit of colour to a b&w photo with elements 8?

Here are some ways to convert color to B&W but retain selected areas of color
The first method is probably the easiest, and is also described in more detail in the recent forum topic http://forums.adobe.com/thread/512424?tstart=30
Method 1
1. Add Hue/Saturation layer, move Saturation slider all the way left to remove color.
2. Set Foreground & Background colors to B&W defaults.
3. Paint with black to reveal color, paint with white to remove color.
Method 2
1. Duplicate Background layer.
2. Remove color:
    Enhance > Adjust Color > Remove Color
       or
    Enhance > Adjust Color > Hue/Saturation, move Saturation all the way left.
3. Use Eraser tool on duplicate layer to reveal color from Background layer.
Method 3
1. Select the area you want to keep the color, make it a new layer.
2. In background layer,
    Enhance > Adjust Color > Remove Color
       or
    Enhance > Adjust Color > Hue/Saturation, move Saturation all the way left.
Method 4
1. Create a blank layer above the Background layer and set its Blend Mode to Color.
2. Paint with default black or white to remove color.
3. Use Eraser to restore color.
Method 5
1. Create blank layer above Background layer and set its Blend Mode to Color.
2. Select the area you want to keep the color, and invert the selection.
3. Fill the selection with default black or white to remove the color, and deselect.
4. To remove excess color paint with default black or white. To remove excess B&W use the Eraser.
In all of these methods, use a soft brush or eraser if you want a feathered transition between the color and b&w portions.

Moving objects and other shapes or groups of shapes in Illustrator to exact placement!

I am trying to move objects with the mouse to an exact place(grouped objects) within my document, how do i go about doing this?
I have snap to point turned off, but everytime i try to click and drag to either overlap and object onto another, so it sits in line and that way i can delete remaining shapes around this, it wont let me, i move it, and then it quickly moves like half a cen centimeter to the left???
I have zoomed in and tried doing it at this view but still the same.
It is very frustrating, does anyone know why this is happening, or could help us.
Also snap to point is not turned off and it's not the first time this has happened!

I jump of half a centimeter is vast.
What happens if you move an object with the arrow keys, just one hit?
It could be a matter of corrupt preferences.
You may try the following and see whether it helps:
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer;
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup;
4) Move the folder with Illy closed;
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options, especially the usual suspects in item 7.

Should I spend many hours in Illustrator puting objects on many separate layers before importing?

Very complex overlapping of objects in this project. My adobe Illustrator art has many hundreds of objects on only about 5 layers. When I imported into Flash I can only get to individual objects by breaking apart the layers. The art is very complicated, interlacing of two human figures I didn't design but I copied from ancient 500BC Greek pottery art for an historical film I'm making.
I labeled every object in Illustrator but apparently loose that while importing into Flash. Should I spend hours more in Illustrator putting everything on separate layers that needs to be used in separate layers for overlapping before importing to Flash? Objects in Illustrator automatically appear on a separate line but I guess that is not the same as a separate layer when you import into Flash, right? I am concerned as to how I will be able to make some of these limbs or clothing with all the objects associated with them be moved into just one layer for the overlapping of these things is very complex and I am certain it will take forever to figure out how to rearrange for proper overlapping order if I make a lot more layers, if it is even possible without a work around in some cases. Frankly I am having difficulty with the concepts of objects in Flash vs how layers work in software like Photoshop. MAC OSX FLASH CS6.

Look closely at your import settings when you import your AI file. Unless you flatten the illustrator layers into bitmaps, none of the objects will be lost. If you double-click what seems to be one object in Flash, you will find that all the component parts are still in there.
However, keeping things organized with layers is good practice in Illustrator, whether or not you're using the product in Flash, so it might be a good practice to cultivate longer term.
