Overlapping/wrong-sized thumbnails in filmstrip

I do have a problem with the thumbnails in the filmstrip. My catalog contains 56K pictures.
Having all pictures shown in the filmstrip, the thumbnails start overlapping each other, starting roundabout at position 30000.
The problem is getting worse the higher the numbers get.
My system:  i7-2600K W7-64bit 16GB Nvidia graphics- current driver. This issue occurs with LR3.6 and LR 4.x
Here is an example showing position 50000:
Any ideas ?

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

• Thumbnails in Filmstrip Mode

Geoff Kaiser was good to explain how to create filmstrips in Browser. However, what can I do to see those filmstrips as thumbnails? Right now it's just a tiny red symbol next to each filmstrip.

Hello again,
I just learned how to post a screen shot. Anyway, notice the tiny red icons running down the left side of the Browser. I need those to be viewable thumbnails. How do I that that? Thanks.

• Updating Media Library in producing wrongly oriented thumbnails

Hi !
Bought yesterday a new Mac mini and transferred today Aperture and it's Library from the Timemachine-Backup to the new Machine.
When starting Aperture it now started to update the Media-Library.
It seems to recreate all the thumbnails and that process is really slow:
- I can see 4 kernels mostly unoccupied.
- The transfer from and to disk is  arround 1-3 MB/s to the internal disk.
all not particulary breath-taking values in my opinion.
BUT ...
- for 1300 pictures it took more than an hour (and there is 24000 more that need to be updated)
- and many of the thumbnails are wrong. They orient wrongly for pictures taken in portrait format.
To correct the thumbnails I need to open the picture in Aperture .
- it almost kills any other activity on the Mac mini. Even iTunes Music is getting hick-ups (I never experienced that on my 2006 Mac Mini with SL)
Questions:
- How can I put this process of updating the library into background (let's say run it on two cores over two or three days) but being able to use the Mac for something else in the mean-time.
- How can I force correctly oriented thumbnails ?
Thanks for your advice.

Update again:
In the mean-time I have some news:
A) A really good feature in Aperture is, that when you restart Aperture it resumes all jobs that were running when you close Aperture. That means, that I do not need to put the job into background.
I can just close Aperture, when I need the computer for some other stuff and then I can start Aperture before I go to sleep to run the update.
B) I started Aperture in 32-bit Mode (Control-I on the Aperture Application Icon) - check the "start in 32-bit mode - check-box" since then Aperture uses only a quarter of the memory it was using in 64-bit mode. Now I am happily enjoying a film from iTunes. Browsing the Apple-support pages and run Aperture media-libary-update in the background. Which now runs 3000 pictures per hour.
This brings up the following question: Why is there a 64bit Mode if it is slower and uses more resources ?

• Flecks on thumbnails in Filmstrip views

My Bridge display is messed up in my main computer, in both Horizontal and Vertical filmstrip view. Some thumbnails display correctly. Others don't appear at all. Others have rows of flecks all over them.
This is only true in filmstrip view - all thumbnails display correctly in Thumbnails view, without flecks; and all files open in PS CS3 correctly. But I use filmstrip view a lot, and I'd like to get it back.
So far I've tried:
- purging the cache
- manually deleting the cache from C:\Documents and Settings\Mary\Application Data\Adobe\Bridge CS3\Cache\data...
- rebuilding the cache
- resetting my Bridge prefs by opening Bridge with Ctrl, Shift and Alt held down and selecting the 'reset all' option
- changing the quality of the thumbnails display and the size of the cache
- resetting my Photoshop prefs, just in case.
Nothing has worked. Is this a known problem?
I have an identical PS CS3/Bridge installation in my laptop. The display there is fine. Maybe I could cure the problem in the desktop by copying Bridge files from my laptop. But which files?
Thanks
Mary

Curt
Problem solved - thanks a lot!
The 'flecks' were rows of small light-coloured wedges running horizontally across landscape files, or vertically up and down portrait files, as if they had been rasped - or 'scrambled', a word I found in an Adobe technote after getting your post.
I do have 128 MB of VRAM in my 4-year-old computer, but I also have lots of image files. I never had the problem before this month - maybe adding a few hundred more files finally overloaded the card's capacity?
Best wishes
Mary

• Re-sizing thumbnails

When viewing the fotos in an event, I can't see them all (as thumbnails). I read of a situation like this in a thread and the guy said he just re-sized the thumbnails. How do you do it?
THANKS, DOUG

In Event view - in the lower right hand corner of the window there is a slider - move it toward the left and the event thumbnails will get smaller

• CS3  - wrong shape thumbnails

Hello!
I've been having a problem recently that Photoshop shows the wrong thumbnails in the Custom Shape Picker. The thumbnail doesn't fit the actual shape. I tried resetting the shapes which didn't help. Brush thumbnails and others still work fine.
Everytime I open the Shape Picker it shows different thumbnails, sometimes the same for all shapes.
Does anyone know this problem or has ideas how to fix it?
I'm on WinXP if that matters.

Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
(A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.)

• Wrong Finder Thumbnails Showing

Hi. I've got a bunch of .epub files (created by me) that now show an image from within the file as its icon instead of the usual icon which had been the actual cover image of the ebook.
I've deleted the com.apple.finder.plist and restarted but no change. Each file shows the same image and when i create new files, by exporting anew pub from indesign, the new files come with the same wrong image as its thumbnail.
Any help?

Thanks so much for your reply Linc. I wasn't getting notified of replies. As it turns out, after hours with support—trying several things including what you suggested—my case had to be sent to the Apple engineers. I just got a call back last week but was traveling. The rep and I are now playing phone tag so I don't know yet what they're going to suggest. The issue persists.

• Wrong Layer Thumbnail Aspect Ratio

In Photoshop CS5
'Clip Thumbnails to Layer Bounds' is checked
I have an Illustrator CS5 Smart Object, with a simple square shape,
but, the layer thumbnail in Photoshop layers panel may show a rectangle instead of the square shape.
This behavior is inconsistent so I'm assuming it's a bug.
Can the thumbnail cache be flushed somehow so it's regenerated correctly?
Is there something to avoid doing to prevent this?

I would post that one on the PowerBook forum, but I suspect that you may have reached a limit of a 5 year old software that predates HD tv.

• IPhone 5s displays wrong video thumbnails - how to clear cache?

I have an iphone 5s and in the video app, I see things like Beyonce's video with a picture of the band RUSH, or Blondie's thumbnail for Megadeth.  Anyone know how I might fix this?  I've done a factory reset on settings, and also tried a restore from a backup, and it's the same condition.  Thumbnails all look fine in itunes.

• Aperture 3 : blank or wrong Project thumbnails

Hi,
I'm seeing some weird issue with my Aperture 3.0.2 version. I've searched and tried some things but none worked it out.
I've tried as well to repair rights/repair database/reconstruct database. Nope.
Issue is that some thumbnails remain blank (and setting the key photo doesn't make it change), while others display a picture that do not belong at all to the project.
Passing the mouse over the project either displays nothing or sometimes scrambled icons (like TV with no signal).
I'd appreciate some help here.

Thank you

I have all of my photos in the Aperture Library file and do not reference a majority of my images...for my setup I did the following:
I recently took the suggestion mentioned on this forum of rebuilding my thumbnails after installing the 3.0.2 Aperture release. I navigated to my home folder/Pictures/ApertureLibrary.aplibrary and right clicked to select "View Contents..."
I opened the thumbnails folder and trashed all the folders inside this folder.
I then started Aperture and selected the All Photos icon in the inspector. I selected all the photos and then went to the Photos menu and rebuilt the thumbnails.
This took hours (approx 32000 images).
It found 5 corrupt image. How did I know? After 6000+ images, the Activity Window said it was processing the image but NEVER advanced the count to the next image. I trashed this image (removed it from Aperture to a different folder in my Pictures folder) and force quit Aperture. I restarted Aperture and it automatically began updated the thumbnails. It got hung up again at about image 24200, and I trashed this, force quit Aperture, restarted and watched it automatically continue to rebuild images.
There was one COMMON FACTOR FOR EACH IMAGE GIVING ME TROUBLE: THEY WERE PANORAMA IMAGES MADE OF STITCHED FILES. (some were JPEGs stitched together and other pano photos were RAWs stitched together.)
I then noticed (in the inspector window with the Adjustments tab selected) that some RAW processed images reverted to the previous Aperture conversion process. I reprocessed these to the new RAW processing.
Aperture boots nice and fast. Everything seems to be purring along. Not sure about heavy adjustments as I haven't had time since the rebuild to test some of the brushes. Before the 10.6.3 update, I intend to use Aperture a little more and determine if it is "ready" for the update. I hesitate to apply updates to any computer which does not appear optimally functional.

• Wrong User-Thumbnail in "Messages"?

Hi there,
i recently updated my ipad2 to ios5 and started to use the "messages"-app.
Some of my contacts have user-pictures.
When i start a conversation via "Messages" then there are these user-pictures (don't know how to describe it better) right next to their textbubbles.
That's nice, so i know whom i'm talking to ;-)
BUT on my side of the conversation (right next to MY textbubbles) is a thumbnail that does not belong to me (as i dont have a contact entry in my contacts for myself). That a bit disturbing, especially if i have a conversation with this special contact (there is the same user-pic on the left and right side of the conversation).
Is anybody experiencing the same? Can anybody help with how to provide the correct user-pic for me/my side of the conversation?)
Thanks in advance,
Carsten

A number of office copier/printers offer a job accounting facility for controlling usage to the printer, especially if it offers colour printing. To work with this facility, the driver should have a section where you can enter the appropriate details.
We have Canon MFD's and we use the job accounting feature in these copiers for printing and copying (so that we can charge clients). With the Canon drivers (PS and UFR2) there is a menu item called Special Features. Here there is a tab that lets you enter the id/pwd when you print.
Depending on your brand/model, you may find a similar setting. Note that you will have to use the vendor's driver. Generic drivers or the Gutenprint drivers included with Leopard do not provide such as facility.

• C309a Photos printing wrong-sized

Hello,
Wasn't sure what topic this fell under, so I figured I'd post here.
I have a c309a (all-in-one with fax).  No matter what program I try to print photos from they don't print the size selected in the print menu.  It's almost like the printer is set to print to pages on 1 sheet (I've checked, it says 1 page per sheet).  8x10s come out half-sized.  I tried printing some 4x6s for my daughter and 2 photos printed on the one sheet.   I have uninstalled and reinstalled the full software package.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am running Windows 7 (32-bit); printer software updated today 10/26/10; the printer is connected to my PC via USB.
Thanks!
Jamie

As a side note, when printing wirelessly from my laptop, photos print the correctly selected size... Now I'm really scratching my head...

• New tab page shows tiled and poorly sized thumbnails

Hiya! First Off: I Love Your Work! Firefox is great and thank you for giving it to us :)

Any suggestions?
oh, quick side note: Window's users get a cool orange Firefox badge to the left of the tabs... linux users just get a plain text Firefox link. Can't wait to get the attractive aesthetics made available to windows' users!

• [SOLVED]Nautilus not "zooming" video thumbnails

Hi!
When i set Nautilus to more than 100% "zoom", the icons of video files get bigger but the thumbnails drawn on them stay the same size, so the video files look like a big white rectangle with a small (regular sized) thumbnail in the middle of it.
Setting Nautilus to less than 100% zoom has video thumbnauls scale down correctly. Inside the .thumbnails folders, the png's belonging to videos and other files look both ok and exactly the same way, but the ploblem only occurs with actual video files.
I noticed, that pictures in big folders first show the same way, shortly after the thumbnails are generated - but they are shown appropriately after a few seconds and video file icons stay that way permanently no matter what.
Any idea how to solve that? thx!

Found inside: abs/extra/libgnomeui
File: gnome-thumbnail.c
changed:
      size = 128;
      if (factory->priv->size == GNOME_THUMBNAIL_SIZE_LARGE)
        size = 256;
...to:
      size = 256;
      if (factory->priv->size == GNOME_THUMBNAIL_SIZE_LARGE)
        size = 256;
compiled, restarted nautilus: WORKING FINE NOW
But i don't think this is like it's supposed to be (and I've got no idea what else I changed by doubling that value). So, whatever that part I altered does - shouldn't there be something like...:
      size = 128;
      if (factory->priv->size == GNOME_THUMBNAIL_SIZE_LARGE)
        size = 256;
      if (factory->priv->size == GNOME_THUMBNAIL_SIZE_LARGEST)
        size = 512;
or something?
Well, I've got got big thumbnailed video icons again, so I'll leave all the sourcecode I don't understand alone for a while now. I'm not marking this thread as "solved" yet, as the method I used to get where I want is most likely very, very, very wrong.
(edit: jupp, still working after reboot. source messy, thumbnails big, me happy. )

• ZIndex issue with thumbnails in spry gallery

I am seeing problems with the z-index (zIndex) of the
thumbnails for the gallery demo in IE browsers (IE6 XP and IE7
Vista)... works fine in Firefox and others, of course. If you
reduce the margin around the thumbnails div... the image is "under"
the image to the right or below (when more than one line of
thumbs).
You can see this in your demo, but it's more pronounced if
you change the dimensions of the thumbs and/or reduce the margin in
the #thumbnails div rule.
Any solutions for fixing IE? If it's not possible to fix the
zIndex issue, is it possible to modify how the thumbnail images
are"grown"? so, rather than center out, perhaps grow them from the
bottom right corner, so that they never attempt to overlap other
thumbs to the right or below?
Help appreciated!

I'll try to find it.
In the meantime, I tweaked the script on this LSM example
page so that the
thumbnail rollovers are overlapping the little thumbnails.
That gives you a
clearer picture of them "not going under".
