Overlay - blocky button graphic

Hi
I've created an overlay in Motion using a basic arrow for a button. However, in DVDsp the arrow is very blocky and poor quality.
The arrow is in Black in Motion, and its created on the menu that DVDsp uses, so the size should be right.
Help appreciated.
Thanks
Trevor

Yes, red + blue = 2. You still only have two levels of anti-aliasing. This plug-in takes a round-about way of getting to the same results. The plug-in takes the potentially hundreds of levels of anti-alaising you have with a grayscale image and reduces it down to two levels which it then converts to red and blue so that you can use Chroma Mapping instead of Grayscale Mapping for the anti-aliasing. The plug-in allows you to see the jaggies before bringing it into DVD SP, it does not "fix" the problem of the DVD specs only having two levels of anti-aliasing for overlays.

• Can't get Button Over Video button graphics to appear using Subtitle Clips

I have a video in a track in DVD SP 3. In S1 of the track I have, near the beginning, a Subtitle Clip about 2 secs. long with text which describes the scene. No problem. Near the end of the track I have another Subtitle Clip in S1 but this time, instead of showing text it shows a button graphic of two little arrows for Buttons Over Video (which when activated make the DVD go back or forward). The graphic is in the form of a standard tif Overlay file as used for Simple Overlays for a menu - a white background with the arrows in red with a black border, all as in the manual. The arrows have two Buttons created over them.
The two little arrows do not show in the Simulator nor in the Mac's DVD Player when the project is Built, nor do they appear in either of my two stand-alone DVD players when the project is burned, but they do show in DVS SP's Viewer window when I move the playhead over the Subtitle Clip in the track. The buttons themselves work. I know this because one is designated the default and when the two arrows should appear, pressing the (physical) remote on my DVD players causes the designed action, and this happens even if I press the remote's left arrow to select the left button and then press Enter. No relevant error messages during Building.
I have moved the Subtitle Clip (the one showing the arrows) down to S2 in case it is not possible to have two Subtitle Clips in S1, but no change. Also, I have added a large blob in the middle of the Subclip Overlay file to see whether the Overlay file got displaced, out of the image area, but the blob appears in its correct position.
What can I do please?
G5/2.0 GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1 GB RAM, 150 GB HD, Sony DCR-HC96 mini DV, FCE HD 3.0 DVD SP 3

After vast effort I have concluded that a graphic in a Subtitle does not work, despite the manual and two other fat books saying it does (although, interestingly, all of them discuss it only very briefly). I have had to use text ("<-") to indicate my back button - not elegant.
Also, Subtitles do not work over stills - I have had to convert them to video.

• Cp6 - Bug (button graphics) - phantoms that cannot be removed?

Hello all,
I just added a dozen custom buttons for the buttons gallery (url: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 6 x64\Gallery\Buttons).
Some of the new ones work, however, others when clicked, display an older replaced button.
In Properties/General/Button Type=Image button
I see all the older buttons but I don't want these buttons any longer and they are NOT in the gallery. How the heck do I remove these old buttons?
Anyhow, when I scroll through the Image buttons and select the new one(s), they appear as the older button.
The ONLY way I could get Captivate 6 to accept the new button images was to rename the new ones (added a "1" to the file name). This seems a bit ridiculous and I wonder if this is a bug.
Questions:
1. Why can't I simply replace button images (even with the same name)?
2. How do I remove old button images from the scroll list at Properties/General/Button Type=Image button
These buttons seem to be embedded in the project and are *not* in the gallery.
Thank you,
Doug

Captivate has done this (well since at least version 5).
The last time I researched this - I found the following:
Buttons graphics become somehow embedded in both the cptx file and in your user folder (Users\You\AppData\Local\Adobe\Captivate 6.0).
You can completly delete a button and It will stilll be available. They way I have dealt with that when building templates (not wanting to have numbers on my buttons) is to get the button looking right in a throw-away file, then when it looks good, delete the user directory, remove the old buttons from the gallery and  open a new project file to add the buttons to. However, if you then open and old file that has the old version of the button... well it gets weird.
I certainly consider this a bug and I have reported it (a very long time ago) Apparently the developers don't share that view.

• Selected/activated button overlay in Buttons over Video

I have six different buttons over video, with one overlay.
The buttons are assigned to each of six audio tracks.
When I select and activate a button the overlay goes from white to red, and the audio changes to the specified audio track. So far, so good. But, when I want to select another button, the red overlay disappears, and I see the selected buttons white overlay. This is of course "default", but I'd like the red overlay to stay, indicating that I'm still listening to that audio track, even if I'm choosing between another button.
Can this be done somehow? I'm thinking that perhaps I can add a subtitle that tells me what Track I have selected, but the overlay is already a subtitle...
Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Only one button can be "selected" at a time, meaning when people scroll through the selections on the menu there is an indication of where they are/what they are about to press when they hit enter.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4573106&#4573106, take a look at the last post for a way to try to get the effect sort of happening
Same general concept applies to buttons over video. Only one state active at a time, and subtitles will not work since the buttons are a subtitle stream (of course you can use add text in the overlay for the buttons) Page 460 of the PDF

• Mismatched button graphics after update

Hi guys, for some reason many of the buttons have the wrong or missing graphics after update. What gives?

You've got it.

• After recent update, button graphics gone?

After the recent Safari update the all the buttons for actions are grey. It is the same in mail too. The buttons still work. I am trying to figure out if this a coincidence or not. If it isn't a coincidence, do others suffering the same problem have a solution. I am a mailtags user, and I wondered if there was any incompatibility there.

Thanks for looking at my question. I see I wasn't specific enough. The graphics on the buttons are gone. They are only grey. I can see a picture would be useful.

• Simple buttons overlaying movie button

Using Flash MX Professional 2004...
I'm trying to create a menu using movie clips of sliding
images with roll-over and roll-out effects. Within those movies I'd
like to overlay simple submenu item buttons.
My work-in-progress
can be viewed here. In the example, when rolled-over, the
leftmost image displays a button labeled 'Menu Item 1'. However,
the 'Menu Item 1' button does not respond to my mouse roll-over.
Is there a way to accomplish this? I hope I have been clear
enough.
Thanks...

I don't see any rollover effect on anything except the images
that display aunder the menu buttons. If the movie loads over them,
then I wouldn't expect to see them change with a rollover... mainly
because they aren't visible at that point.
You may have to explain the problem a little better, because
for what I can see, there isn't one, except that you possibly don't
have content for the other buttons yet.
Your problem, whatever it might be, is most likely in your
code, so if you can show the code and explain what you want it to
do, then it will be easier to assess what might be wrong.

• Missing Button Graphics (E.g. Search/Submit type buttons)

Hi,
This problem has plagued me for a while now and I've made a few attempts at finding a solution but none have worked.
Basically in place of the 'Post Question' button below which should be in green I have a 'place holder' grey button with the words super-imposed over it. Also, the buttons above the box I am typing in (for formatting text etc.) are just completely blank, grey squares.
This is the same for most push buttons of this type across various sites. For example, Google's search button, YouTube login etc.
The problem does not occur in Firefox's Safe Mode, however when running Firefox normally, even with all add-ons and plugins disabled the problem persists.
I've no idea what else Safe Mode does differently so I'm unsure how to continue troubleshooting this issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

• Horizontal smooth scrolling

Is it possible to have longer pages (768x1500) and set it to horizontal smooth scroll. I wonder if you could upload several long articles and combine them into one article and set it to horizontal smooth scroll?

I think the Smooth Scrolling feature is designed for webpage-style vertical scrolling only. The 'Horizontal' and 'Vertical' direction settings refer to the layout orientations (your landscape and portrait layouts), not the direction of the scroll action itself.
If I understand this incorrectly, please someone jump in to correct me.
You could get around this by having horizontal Scrollable Content that fills the height of your layout but extends left-and-right. The problem is that, having reached the right-hand end of the Scrollable Content, swiping across the iPad screen will not move you on to the next page or next article. Perhaps you could get around this by adding a secret button (a 'navto' link to the next page) that overlays a button graphic that only comes into view at the end of the Scrollable Content. Not sure if this would work, though.

• Graphics button in ALV

Ladies and gentlemen,
I wonder if anybody can explain how does the button "graphics" in ALV work. I have a report with some numbers, I understand I need to mark the column and press the button, but I don´t like the resulting picture.
I wonder if there is a way how to change the behavior of the button, how to change the parameters of the picture? How to change the column widths for example... I understand that there is an option to do the whole charting myself, but I would like to "customize" or change the way the chart is being drawn by the ALV button.
Thank you for your time and effort,
regards Otto

Hi,
go to SE80 and display package SALV.

• How to create subpicture for a button?

Hello!
I have really tried to find the answer to this rather silly problem on my own, but without result. Please help someone!
The situation:
I have a menu with three choices: "Play Movie", "Scene Selection" and "Subtitles". Now, the text presenting these choices are part of the background image, created in Premiere (the program I know best). They are written with an old typewriter to get that gritty feeling.
I want the user to scroll between these "menu items". The currently selected item should be indicated by a black circle/spot/dot before the text of the item. By default, when the menu appears, there is a black circle in front of (to the immediate left of) the item "Play Movie". The user should now be able to step with his/her remote to the other items, thereby making the black circle in front of "Play Movie" disappear and appearing instead before some of the other items. In short: the black circle is always showing before the currently selected item. OK, I got a bit verbose there, but the idea got across hopefully. One more thing: the background color is 100% white.
Up to this point, my solution was this: I placed black circles (small images with gradation and all, very nice looking) in front of ALL THREE ITEMS. Then I convert these into buttons. Then I choose the color set for the menu so that the unselected state is 100% white, plain and simple, with 100% opacity, thereby covering the black circles that should not show. Only in the selected and activated states does opacity for the button subpicture drop to 0%, thereby revealing the black circle that should be seen.
The problem? Well, on some DVD-players (not on the XBOX 360 though), when an item is activated, all three circles show for a brief moment before the selected action starts (for example playing the movie). It also happens in Encore Preview. This is not logical at all and looks amateurish. I don't know why it happens, but my guess is that it wouldn't if I did this the "correct" way: by creating subpictures fo the buttons in the shape of circles. I understand the nice looking gradations must go out the window but that is a price I'm willing to pay.
But now I run into an unexpected problem: I don't understand how to create a subpicture for the button that is a black circle. It seems the documentation in Encore and on forums in general takes for granted that you know how to do this.
What I tried ws this: I created a monochrome, small image in bmp format - a black circle on white background. But this image just shows up as a black rectangle in Encore.
What should I do? I should add that I have no real experience with Photoshop, so go slow if you go there.
Regards,
Nikolaj

Basically, when one realizes the limitations of the Sub-picture Highlights, as set by the DVD-specs., it's easy to see the "workaround."
A couple of the aspects of Sub-picture Highlights are:
1.) 2-bit color (either ON, or OFF), from a limited color palette, with degrees of Transparency (the opposite of PS's Opacity).
2.) they will appear on top of anything else on the Menu, including things like Button text/graphics.
By constructing your Sub-picture Highlight in PS, you can use Masking to define where it will be, and where it will not be. In the case that prompted my article, the poster had a series of Text Buttons, and the Sub-picture Highlights were formed from that Text. The poster did not like the look of those 2-bit jagged blocks of color overlying the Text in the Button. The workaround is to "punch a hole" in the Sub-picture Highlight, so that it is hollow, where the Button's Text appears. This is done in PS, by using the "outline" of that Text to create a Mask for the Sub-picture Highlight. The jagged aspect can be adjusted a bit, by using a degree of Transparency (set in the non-Auto Color Set back in Encore). We still have a 2-bit color Sub-picture Highlight, and it still overlays the Button's Text, but now there is a hole in it, right where the Button's Text is located, and it is seen through that hole. The introduction of Transparency has the visual effect of "softening" the look of the 2-bit color, even though the jagged edges are still there - they just look softer. I went on to show how one could even use a second Sub-picture Highlight, that is just a bit larger than the first, and with more Transparency to simulate a "glow." Now, we cannot have a real "glow," because we are limited to that 2-bit color for the Sub-picture Highlight, but we can simulate it.
Much of what a designer does is really slight of hand - illusion. They all have to work within the limitations of the DVD (or BD) specs., but with a bit of creativity, planning and some work in PS and Encore, they can create enough smoke and use enough mirrors to fool the user into believing that what they think they see skirt the DVD-specs. They do not, but that's where the illusion comes in.
We get a lot of questions from people, who claim that one commercial DVD, or another, has full-color Sub-picture Highlights and they complain that Encore cannot do that - only 2-bit Sub-picture Highlights. What they are seeing, but do not realize it, is a dupe Menu, with a full-color graphic, and no real Sub-picture Highlight visible. Jeff gives full details on doing this. Same for those who have seen a Button with a duo-tone thumbnail, that turns full-color, when the Button is navigated to. Wow, how did they do that, and why can't Adobe Encore do that? Well, what they saw was a dupe Menu, with a full-color thumbnail and no visible real Sub-picture Highlight.
Jeff shows how to create what appears to be at least a 3-color Sub-picture Highlight. It's really just 3 regular 2-bit color Sub-picture Highlights, with Masking to create the illusion that he beat the DVD-specs. Neat! [Being from the USA, I also liked that he used the US flag, but he could have chosen the French "Tri-color," or any other flag, without artwork.]
These are all just tricks, but if the user buys into the illusion, who's to know?
Enjoy,
Hunt
PS - though many of the great, older posts were lost, when the forum changeover happened, I strongly suggest reading the posts here. You can bypass ones that do not offer you anything, but almost every possible illusion has been discussed at least one time, and likely many, with some different workflows offered by those, who replied. Great reading.

• Buttons with alpha

I have created some circular navigation buttons with alpha,
and I am wondering if I can get the alpha to be honoured in two situations.
1) When I click on the button only the circle part gets highlighted.
2) If I overlay these buttons over a graphic, the alpha gets honoured as well.
I am using a png but I can not find a function in acrobat that accepts the
alpha channel.
Thanks

Sure, Thanks for your help Zaxist!
Boiling it down to the most simple, this is the prob.
Layer: Symbol with gallery images (images are turned off inside the symbol.. so they should not block anything)
Layer: Symbol (button A)
With this layout... Button A doesn't work at all. The button is not detected when mouse is clicked.
But...
If i delete the top layer... Button A works.
If I turn off the top layer from the stage. (top/left display option)... Button A works.
Using an image, I wish it could be ignored by any mouse/touch events, so it doesn't block any layers beneath it.
I've been playing with somehow turning off the display on the gallery symbol from another button. So far i've started to dig into css and found
<style>
span
display:none;
</style>
but i dont know how to put that into a button's events like mouseclick or mousedown from another symbol.
Does that explain things better?

• Button/multi state query

Hello all
I’m encountering a challenge which I believe has been discussed on these forums.
This relates to pixelated, blurry text within buttons and multi-state objects.
One solution to this issue is not using the objects containing text as buttons or multi-state objects. Instead, you insert shapes with no fill/stroke on top of text graphics and then grouping them.
This ensures the text is sharp and clear.
However, if you wish to have a roll over state, with a different fill/stroke/text colour as part of the roll-over state, then this poses problems as the shape serving as a button has to have no fill/stroke or text within them.
Has around a work around for this problem?
Many thanks
H

For clear buttons with click states, the easiest workaround is to place a dummy button over the image and change the stroke and perhaps even add a transparency fill. There is another more complicated workaround as well. For examples and instructions, see DPS Tips > Advanced Overlays > Sharp Buttons.

• URGENT! Hide buttons til after loop point on motion menu?

Hi,
Is it possible to hide the buttons on a motion menu til AFTER the loop point?
I have a menu where there is a 10 second motion graphics intro, then a loop point, then 30 seconds of slight motion graphics in the background. As it should, after 30 seconds, it loops back to the loop point and only plays the last 30 seconds again and again.
The problem I am having is that the buttons appear on the menu at the start, which looks awful as they get in the way of the 10 second motion graphic intro.
Is there a way to make the buttons only appear at the 10 second (loop) point?
As a side note - I tried doing the 10 second intro on its own track, then having the track jump to the menu, but that creates a little delay that is quite noticeable.. It's not a smooth and continuous flow like the way I am doing it above.
Thanks!!!

JF:
I add the button graphics into my background movie at the loop point. Then, I create an overlay file in Photoshop and add it to the menu? It will then only activate at the loop point, which works well since that's where the text would appear in the movie?
That's right!
I don't know is how to add the overlay in
Select your menu, and in the Inspector windows you'll find the Select Overlay option and navigate to your PSD overlay file.
I think that this Basic Menu Tutorial (from Drew13's www.dvdstepbystep.com site) could help you to create a basic overlay. Just keep the background of your file WHITE and your overlays graphics BLACK.
