Overlay Files

After reading the DVDSP4 Manual for quite a while now, I am still unsure how to actually use an overlay file in a standard menu for creating button highlights. Could you provide a tutorial or more detailed explanation on how exactly to use overlays for buttons? Thanks

One would be to set the top image in the black background so it is always on (normal) then the overlay would be just the glow with gradients for the highlight and (in other words the blue/purple is not part of the overlay, just the outline glow) and use the sliders to adjust the white/gray for the glow
Take a look at http://www.dvdstepbystep.com/glower.jpg a rough example of the overlay

  • "bit rate too high" in menus with overlay files

    Hi
    I opened in DVDSP4 a project I was working in DVDSP2.
In DVDSP2 the project could build without a problem but now on DVDSP4 during build the program either gets stuck or gives the message "Muxer Bitrate Too High" when it reaches a menu with an overlay file (tiff or jpeg / advanced colors).
I didn't add any new assets to the project, just used transitions between buttons and menus available in DVDSP4.
As soon as I remove the overlay file, build continues succesfully.
Anybody has an idea about why this is happening?

Thank you for looking into this issue
Here is something I tried out:
I set the same file used for the overlay, as background image, and build was successful, which probably means that DVDSP can handle this type of file
Ps. Originally the files were tiff (they worked fine in DVD studio pro 2)
When the build problem started in DVDSP4, I converted them in jpeg but I had the same results.

  • My Overlay file os not showing up

I use photo shop to export a TIFF image, I import it to DVDSP, set it over the menu as overlay, try and drag a button box over it but it dosnt show up.
I have tryed all types of video formats

    Hey Paul
When I said 'white bg (not BP)' bg means background. This white get's keyed out in the overlay so you only see the greyscale images set in the white. You can either select Image>Adjustments>greyscale is PS or if your overlay shapes are to be simple one colour overlays the you can leave the image as is and just make your overlay shapes black. After you've created your image Save As.. to keep a layered orig - then with your new PS file select Layer>Flatten Image and save again. You can take this flat PS file straight into DVDSP as your overlay - and once again, follow my previous instructions above to make sure you're actually seeing the overlay you've created.

  • Extract the overlay file

Is it possible to extract the overlay from a previously authored dvd?? It's a motion menu, and the overlay is just text highlighting.

if you have a pc ( or maybe running an intel mac with windows loaded) you can use a program called subrip. There is a similar Mac program whose name escapes but have tried it and it's not as effective.

  • Photoshop CS4 smart object template just overwrote a raw file - HELP

So.  I've been working in Photoshop extensively for about 6 years now and I am well aware that nothing we do in Photoshop or Lightroom is supposed to overwrite a raw file.  I'm not talking about changing it to something a little lighter or darker, I'm talking about replacing a picture of one baseball player with another one - and the original? Gone.
Here's what happened: I have a poster template that contains several layers, 7 of which are smart objects.  I change the pictures in the template by right-clicking the smart object layer and selecting "replace smart object," browsing to the new image, selecting, and here is what SHOULD happen: the target picture opens in Adobe camera raw, I make some small edits, click done or okay or something similar, and that new image has replaced the old one in the template.  What DID happen was this: I followed the procedure above and selected my target raw file, the picture that was already in the template (the one I was trying to replace with my target file) opened in Adobe camera raw.  I thought - Hey, that's wierd!  Closed the ACR dialog and tried again.  Same thing happened.  I opened lightroom and saw - to my HORROR - that the target file had been changed to the same image that was in the template.
If it clarifies: pictures of player A (who played in 2009) is in all of the smart object layers in my template.  I want to make that poster be of player B (who played in 2012) so I begin replacing all the smart objects.  When I get to the 3rd image in the poster template, Photoshop overwrites my raw file of player B with the smart object photo of Player A.  There were no photos of player A on the network drive that the picture of Player B was on.  But there's one now.  My raw file shows that it was modified about 10 minutes ago.
We tried undoing in Photoshop.  That did nothing.  We tried deleting the xmp file.  That did nothing.  We removed it from the lightroom catalog and reimported it.  It is now a picture of Player A from 2009 and my picture of Player B from 2012 is just gone.
Anybody have any idea what this could be and how we could avoid it in the future?
    Best,
    Jamey

Now - JJ - when you say "overlay files" - what do you mean?  Because that feels like a good description for what happened.
We performed no save operation at any point during the sequence of events that ended with the image in one raw file being replaced by the image in the smart object.
As I wrote Smart Object layers embedded object is a copy of the original  and if you replace it you replace it with a copy of some other object. Embedded object are copies and independent from the original.  If after creating a smart Object layer who's embedded object is a copy of a raw file and its conversion settings. You change the original RAW files RAW conversion settings the smart object layer raw conversion setting are not changes for its a copy with independent raw conversion settings. When you replace a smart object layers contents you will replace the embedded object and you should replace it with an object the has the same pixel size and orientation. Because there is an associated transform for the object in the layer that is not replaced. The replacement is also a copy.  If the original smart object was created using  File Open where you choose a RAW file  ACR would open with the RAW files current conversion settings.  In ACR you can changes the setting then hold down the shift key to change the open image button to an Open Object button.  Using that button ACR will open a smart object layer in Photoshop the contents of the embedded object is a copy of the RAW file and the current ACR settings.  No File is written Photoshop is not a File Editor its a Document editor that has many data structures for different layer types.  When you replace the contents of a smart object you will be put into a "Place" file selection dialog if you choose a raw file it should have the same orientation as the image being replaced because of the associated transform. When you choose a RAW file ACR will open and you can change the conversion settings however there will be no Open Image button instead there will be an OK button.  There is also a save image button and you can save a RAW file that is a DNG file not a CR2 file. Like the DNG converter. If you click the OK button the embedded object in the smart object layer will be replaced with a copy of the selected RAW file and the current ACR settings. Again there is no file written Photoshop is not a File editor just the embedded smart object data is replaced in Photoshop smart object layer's data structure.
I do not think the use of smart objects in you process caused what you are experiencing and because it only happens once an a while I feel its more likely caused by some human error made during the processing in those cases. I would look elsewhere for what causing the overlay. In the place file selection dialog it is possible to rename files perhaps even by accident. Programs like LR and Bridge can rename and copy files perhaps overlay other files.

    Amit,
Do not extract the com.sap.portal.support.browse, just rename it to the corresponding name with par.bak format.
    or
You can directly get the par.bak file using below steps,
System Admin -> Support -> Portal Runtime -> Browse Deployment -> press the link download -> press the button on the window "Open" -> extract the par.bak file

  • Can't modify text on Type Overlay in Acrobat Pro 9.0

I'm trying to modify a menu for a local restaurant. They gave me the file as a .pdf file, and it's listed as a Type Overlay file. Advanced editing and touch up text tool do not work (I'm trying to delete an item that is no longer served).
The entire menu page comes up as an object / picture, not as text. Using the touch up text tool does delete the desired text, but it changes the entire layout of the page, moving text over several columns and covering existing text. Trying to realign the text by putting space in the missing pieces location just compounds the problem in several bizarre ways.
How do I determine what type of format this is. It says there are no layers, it appears to be one image, but deleting or changing any portion of the image causes undesired movement of text. How do I delete, or insert text as the menu changes?
    Thanks!
    John

Here's an update to the problem I was having.
I couldn't find any way to edit the pdf "as is" in Acrobat, but through obstinance and trying everything at my disposal that had even a slim chance of working, I came up with a solution.
By opening the pdf up in Adobe Illustrator, it gave me the ability to cut / paste, delete and modify the text without problems or errors. I was then able to resave as a pdf. The file works great, and though I still can't modify it in Acrobat, Illustrator works fine until I get the original file.
On a related note, Illustrator allowed me to remove the menu background from the pdf file and save it (the text only) as another pdf, getting rid of clutter but maintaining alignment so it still prints on the menu paper and stays in line with the graphics.
    I hope this helps others!

  • Using image as overlay

Normally you create your menu in Photoshop and then you create a simple overlay file (using white, black, red and blue). Then you draw your buttons and select how to key and what color to use.
Is there any way of using a full color-image for both the background menu AND the overlay file?
Here's what I want to do:
I have a menu with small thumbnails for each button. When no button is selected there's a (blue) skin over it.
The button selected does not have a skin, but is visible in full color.
The ideal thing would be to have two JPEG files, and one with the skin all over the image, the other without the skin. Then I set the background and overlay, and when I draw my button, the clear image appear "from behind". Can this be done without having to use a layered menu? There are about 14 buttons on the menu.

A couple of points to add in here - first off, try not using JPEGs... they are compressed and can get ugly when the menu is converted to MPEG2. Try using .pict or .tiff instead.
Secondly, the overlay is in the sub picture stream - you can only use four colours for that no matter what. You could use a mask and switch it from place to place according to the button state, but ultimately if you want full colour then use layers.
Sigh... did I just say that out loud??

  • Menu Button Overlays

    This is driving me buggy:
I've created a menu in Motion with a white background and 3 purple circles in front of the selection options: Play, Highlights, and Index.
I've created an overlay file in Photoshop, and after much trial and error I've managed to get the black circles in the .psd file to line up with the purple indicators. Now maybe I'm going about this the wrong way. I thought that the circles in the .psd file would hide the corresponding purple circles in the Motion menu unless the button was selected. Instead, the opposite is happening. There are always two purple circles visible, and a light gray circle appears over the purple circle of the selected button! Why light gray, anyway? Shouldn't it be invisible? (White) (This is happening, by the way, with a single layer .psd file. I tried with each black circle on it's own layer, and that does it's own weird thing.)
I'm just really at a loss here. It seems like what I'm trying to do should be simple. I want a purple circle to appear next to each menu option when it's highlighted. When they're not highlighted, I want the plain white background. The text of the buttons, Play, Highlight and Index, are animated, so they need to stay in the Motion menu. Do I need to somehow create the purple circles in DVDSP?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

The circle is not "vector" so I think the grey is due to the fact that you have some interpolation (if that is the correct term) with regard to how the circle is done in psd.
Test. Switch to a pure box. I had this problem in a psd overlay file a few months back. client wanted ovals but the artifact was obvious. switch to square and all was well.

  • One menu with more than one overlay buttons. Is that posible?

Hello, (I posted this yesterday but as a part of a created and solved question that is the reason I decided to create my own's)
I have a menu and I want to link it to a two different tracks so I use two buttons. The problems is that I only can link one overlay button to the menu so what can I do with the second button if I want it to work exactly as the first button -the one that is overlayed to the menu-?
Thank you and I expect that I have been clear enough

    Yes you should put all of your buttons onto a single overlay file. See this tutorial on how to do that;
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/alex_all_menusdir/chapter1.html
Please skip over the part on Layered Menus and go directly to the part on Simple Highlights.

  • Photoshop files in DVDSP-best practices...

I am teaching a class and a discussion point cam about regarding Photoshop and layers. At issue is a menu design where the designer used multiple layers (10-13)for text, objects, etc. This is not a layered menu but there is one overlay file.
    Question:
Apart from the overlay layer should one be merging or flattening (not sure I know which is preferred) the file before doing a build?
    Comment:
In the build process we are converting still assets to JPEG's and video assets to MPEG2 so this very process does a "flattening." Therefore the extra time/work in Photoshop is not needed.

You can certainly use a layered file to create a standard menu. It's a DVDSP feature, not something that all authoring apps let you do. Some may, but not all.
You can import 10-13 layers in a single file, no need to flatten or merge. When you add this to a menu be sure to create the right kind of menu first! You are making a standard menu, not a layered menu. When you add the photoshop file the layers are preserved and you can then see how it looks. If you need to edit the file you can do so, and of course you get to specify which layer is the overlay. This last bit is in a different tab, but all in the property inspector for the menu. Also, if you sue coloured shapes for the overlay layer (and why not?) remember that your colour mapping will need to be set correctly in the 'Colors' tab for them to show as you expect. Generally speaking, using a color in the overlay file means you'll need to set the menu up with Chroma rather than grayscale settings.
When complete, you build and format your disc, and DVDSP flattens all of the layers into a background image (apart from the specified overlay layer) before it converts them to MPEG2 format.
This functionality is a feature that is intended to make authoring menus a little easier for people. Personally, I don't use it, preferring to manage the menu creation in photoshop entirely, but I do see how you could play around with various layer combinations from inside DVDSP to decide what the final look should be before committing it to the disc.

  • Overlays in LR 4

I want to add a snow overlay to a photo and can't figure out how to do it, and then export the photo with the overlay. I have LR4, and the overlay files (of snow) are on png format. Can anyone offer a step by step process on adding the overlay to an existing image and then how to export it with the overlay on top? I use a PC for my editing.

You have to use Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

  • Overlays yet again!!

Hi guys I have searched the forum and tried the many solutions posted but I have had no luck in using overlays!!!I have even copied step by step doing it the way the tutorial dvd included in final cut pro but no luck!! this is my case....
I have a menu created in motion which includes letters using stencil alpha (i.e. video inside the letters),2 photoshop pictures, letters fading in and out through the menu and 2 names at the bottom to be used as menu selections.
I have exported a freeze of my menu into photoshop and created some underlines just as the tutorial dvd explains (by the way should I save 2layers?merge layers in photoshop????),I have then imported the overlay file (tried it saving it as tiff, pict, psd etc...) into dvd studio pro.I have dragged it over my motion menu an set it as OVERLAY but when I create my buttons I cant see the lines!!!
I have even followed step by step the links posted for creating overlays but stil no luck.
    Can anyone help me!!!
    Thanks a lot
    Danny

Usually best off to have a flattened pict or tiff as an overlay
You will need to map the highlights for the buttons (lines) to see them
Mapping and make sure that the button area covers the section you want to highlight. Also note that on motion menus the highlights do not appear until the loop point, so if the loop point is at 10 seconds in the menu, the overlays will not work until then when simulating or later on.
    Using Motion For Menus

  • Overlay visible in Menu Editor, not in Simulate

Using DVD Studio Pro 4.03, I've built a menu with a .m2v background and a .psd overlay for my buttons. The menu appears correct in the Menu Editor ... both the .m2v background and the .psd overlay are visible. However when I try to Simulate the menu to check functionality, the overlay isn't visible ... if I click where they should by, the menu works as expected.
I tried doing a Build with the same results ... the overlay isn't visible.
I'm baffled. Any thoughts of something I'm missing?
    Thanks,
    David

I've tried .TIF and .PCT but both behaved exactly as the .PSD file. After selecting each as the overlay file, they were visible in the Menu Editor but disappeared when I go to the Simulate Menu.
