Overloud's TH1 Amp Sim FLAT OUT RAWKS

Just PURCHASED Overloud's TH1 last night - and NO I didn't Pirate it either IT'S THAT FRIGGIN' GOOD! I tried the demo out a few weeks ago and was amazed at the sounds I was getting - sounded closer to real amps than Amplitube, Guitar Rig, etc. in my opinion. this baby RAWKS! Been using it in Garageband (Logic too) and it makes it all so much nicer...
There's a demo on their website to try for 14-days - test this thing out boys you might be amazed like I was. It talks about ILOK protection but I don't use ILOK's and I was able to install it just fine without it. It also uses a challenge/response type of activation for those who don't own an ILOK key. Nothing is needed to test out the demo and with my serial number (when I purchased it) submitted to their website along the small file it generated when I installed it - I was able to unlock it with ease - NO ILOK KEY IS REQUIRED.
Here's the site:
http://www.overloud.com
*I am in NO WAY connected to them.* I am simply a guitarist who enjoys amp sims and this one was well worth buying. The amps. stompboxes, cabs, etc are all amazing. The presets it comes with are endless and fully customizable too or simply build your own. I spent hours last night with it and am actually staying home from work today to PLAY! It's that good IMO. I love my real amps - I currently have 6 (including 3 tube amps) TH1 is not just a SIM - it's a room full of NEW AMPS.

Hi,
I just bought the Overloud TH-1 today after playing around with the demo for one day. Every word you say is 100% true! It´s just the best sounding guitar amp simulation ever. Especially the hi-gain sounds are phantastic. The punch and the responsiveness feels like a real amp and it´s pure fun playing that baby. (I´m in no way connected to them, too! - I´m just that impressed) I´ve tested guitar rig, revalver, amplitube but none of them can come as close to a real amp as the TH-1.
A tip for those who want to test the baby: When you use distored/hi-gain sounds you will experience quite a high noise level. Just click on the word "open" in the top area of the th-1 to open the global controls. There you find a "gate" knob. Crank up that value just a bit and the noise is gone!

  • Can we make the amp sim sound more "tubular"?

I play live instruments exclusively, and a rack-mounted mini + a MOTU 828 has replaced all the stage amps, pedals, preamps, etc. It's fantastic.
The one thing I'm not happy with is the guitar amp simulator's inability to re-create the valve amp (a.k.a. "Marshall Stack") sound.
The "American High Gain" sounds, to my ear, like a classic 1980s solid-state amp.
The "British High Gain" sounds to me like a classic 1970s... solid-state amp.
I don't want the flat-line "crunch" of solid state, I want the SCREAM of over-driven tubes!
In every other way, the signal processing capability of GarageBand is a dream. I like the stereo chorus effects, the reverb, the compressor, the gate, the EQ... It's just this one small thing I'm lacking that is the thorn in my side.
I can't afford a vintage Marshall Stack. I can probably afford a pretty good knock-off tube amp and a couple 4x12 cabinets, but I don't want to haul all that around to support one instrument.
Heck, I don't even want to mess with a RP200 or Guitar Pod. I shouldn't have to! If a $120 stomp-box can re-create an enjoyable illusion of tube distortion, the magnificent Mac mini should have no problem doing so as well.
Anybody have any luck getting a top-notch tube amp sound out of GarageBand? If so, would you care to share your settings? If not, are there good third-party patches and/or "Jam Pack" offerings which can get me there?

For cheapskates like me, are there any really great free (or reasonably cheap) amp-modeling plug-ins that anybody can recommend? I've experimented with a few now, and most of them don't sound that much better than the ones that come with GB.
Count me as a cheapskate guitarist as well! OK, while I'm not necessarily adverse to shelling out for the likes of AU versions of Amplitude, Guitar Rig, or the Line6 stuff, I'm definitely adverse to shelling out for it without being able to road-test it rather better the last demo versions of any AUs for these I've seen allow. It's a fair pile of money to drop on something that I'm not sure I love, might not be able to sell on easily, and could be "obsoleted" by an OS upgrade ....
So far, I've stuck with the stock GB amp sims, doing my best to tweak settings to my tastes. Even with my limited experimentation -- and abilities -- I think that the (relatively limted range of) amp simulation built in the GarageBand at least may be much more capable than it appears. I think the shipped presets are spread too generically thin to be very interesting of themselves. Clearly, Apple assumes that more serious guitarists will go off and purchase specialized AUs, and hasn't spent a lot of time getting serious gearheads in there to come up with more and better presets (or basic amp models). There is also a dearth of documentary info about how the models were designed to behave and how to get more out of them.
But what about all us cheapskate guitarists? Or at least those of us unwilling to part with so much cash for a 3rd-party digital amp model on what is, basically, a dare?
I really, really, really wish Apple -- or someone -- would set up a web site that facilitated a GB user community where people could upload and download user-made presets. (This would be useful not just for guitarists, but other presets as well.) Apple has always had a strong user community, and it seems to me like a forum like that would be a relatively cheap way of enhancing user experience and building user loyalty. The installed user base for GB must be enormous, so why this hasn't been done is beyond me.
Anyway, my stuck the info related to my (so far) most successful (in my mind ;)) GB amp sim tweak to my own web site: <http://www.carlaz.com/music/gb_presets.html>
Dubbed "El Sabado" it was aimed at a relatively modern Tony Iommi-ish tone -- which I won't claim it achieves but when I've posted some of my short demo clips to guitar-oriented forums, some listeners have been impressed that such a tone came out of the built-in GB amp simulators. (With some neck humbucker examples, some listeners also compared it to a Slash-like tone.) I'm sure other more knowledgeable than myself could improve on this or better it; and I tweaked it up in GB 2.x. I've only just been playing with GB '08 in recent weeks, so I haven't made any definite changes using the additional controls available in GB '08. The .pst file is downloadable, and there's a screenshot of the (GB 2.x) settings in case you can't use the .pst.
Obviously, the sound coming out of amp sims will depend on your indivdual guitar. The above one was designed around a LP-style twin-humbucker guitar. I've been working on a couple of bass amp sim tweaks, though my bass is an old Rick 4001, which starts off sounding a bit different from more common and more modern basses, so anything I can eventually post in the bass amp sim dept. might be a bit weird when used with, say, a Fender Jazz or Precision type bass ....

  • Using guitar amp sims live onstage... requesting your feedback

I know this is mainly a recording forum, but I expect a few of you out there are using amp sims live. So I've about a dozen gigs now and it's been OK for the most part. I also use Logic to run backing tracks, and I've been using different amp sim plug-ins on live guitar tracks to test them out and see what works best. For the most part I'm using Guitar Amp Pro, but I'm also trying Amplitube 2 and Guitar Rig 3. In general, I've had comments from FOH audio techs saying that my tones are pretty good, but there's always seems to be a bit of harshness and thinness in the tone that is not apparent in my headphones at home, and if anything I tend to reduce the treble and presence in all my patches, below that of the factory presets anyway.
I mainly play through the monitor systems at gigs, and am looking at different in-ear options, but last weekend I played a venue with limited on-stage monitor capabilities, so I made provisions on my own. I split off the stereo signal coming out of my Firebox interface and went into a little Mackie 1202 mixer, then into a Crest stereo power amp, then into my Vox 4x12 stereo guitar cabinet. You can't run a processed guitar signal back into a regular guitar amp head as this combination sounds like ka-ka, understandably, because the amp sims have already processed what the amp would then process a 2nd time. Anyway, I ran the EQ's on the mixer totally flat, so in effect I was sending the uncolored original sound to the cabinet.
Surprisingly, in this new configuration my tone was actually very good and "amp-like" sounding. My theory is that the 4x12 cabinet, not having a horn or high frequency driver, naturally removed any high end harshness with it's limited frequency response (it's probably about 8Khz bandwidth I'm guessing). I might have expected my tone to be muffled, so either I'm running too much high end in my patches or what, but it's no wonder that a monitor or FOH loudspeaker system with separate high frequency drivers would sound the way they do. My next thoughts are to maybe test running a low pass filter on the output strips in Logic to roll-off frequencies above 8kHz or so, to limit what gets fed out to the monitors and FOH.
Another theory about the thin sound is due to the fact that in an amp sim environment on-stage, there really isn't any air moving speakers like in a true mic'd up guitar cabinet on-stage. In terms of amp sim preferences, I find that Guitar Amp Pro is not as detailed or warm as the others, but it can be tweaked for acceptable higher gain tones and some really nice clean tones. I think in general, Amplitube 2 has the fullest fattest tone in some of their amp models, and while Guitar Rig 3 has some really nice models which sound fine in headphones or studio monitors, they seem to sound the thinnest live of the three sims I've tested.
I know guitar tone is a very personal thing and what sounds good to one person may sound like crud to another, but what generalities and experiences have some of you had? I think we're just on the tip of a revolution in live guitar, what with the new Stomp IO and Rig Kontrol products coming out, just to name a few... Also, how are some of you finding the latency issues that are still hindering this technology to some degree? Many thanks in advance!

hey thanks for the responses guys! I usually get notified via email when a reply is posted but that didn't happen for this post (?). Anyway, great advice, but in the meantime I've actually managed to make a dramatic improvement in my onstage tone and it was very simple, and logical too. The first rather embarrassing point is that I tried setting up my tones with different sets of headphones and whoa what a difference. One would expect that different headphones will all sound different (as it is with loudspeakers) but the Yamaha headphones I was previously using removed pretty much every bit of high-end harshness that I was hearing on stage through the monitors, so what I thought was a good sound in reality was NOT. With my new BeyerDynamic earbuds (which I will be using as in-ears onstage soon) I heard pretty much exactly the same harshness that the Yamaha's were masking.
The fix to this was actually pretty simple: in the cabinet simulators of the plug-ins, I simply moved the mic to "off-center" instead of "on centre" where I had the majority of my patches saved as. Other than maybe a little less presence and treble, the tone was instantly 100% better. The funny thing is, from all the live shows I've done I always position the mic off-centre because it sounds better, doh!
I've played 4 shows since and 3 of them were festival style with great quality monitor rigs and my guitar absolutely rocked when on high gain tones, instead of giving my bandmates and the first few rows in the audience a very close shave The tone was very punchy, fat and "amp-like" and I was even getting some controllable feedback from the wedges. The guys in the band and even some FOH engineers commented that I had great tone so I felt alot better about the whole thing. The other show was a club with cheap monitors and while the sound was nowhere as good, it still was not harsh like before.
I admit that my overall tone is maybe still not quite as dynamic as it could be and there's a minimal (but almost unnoticeable) amount of latency, but overall it sounds like a guitar should, and I've heard many players with good quality amp rigs that sound much worse. I'm going to continue with my "ampless" crusade (no hard feelings jnashguitar haha!) and as technology improves I'm confident I'll continue to zero in on that elusive holy grail of guitar tone that every guitarist can attest to. That's the thing with guitarists, we think we have achieved the perfect tone, but after a few months we start looking again, but that's what makes it fun, buying new toys, trying new things. Good tone is everywhere!

  • How do I deal with flat out lie in an app review in another country?

I just found out how to see reviews from other countries. So I picked Canada first and looked at one of my apps. There is one review - 1 star. The person claims I stole pictures from Flickr and used them in my app. This is flat out untrue.
I have one image in my app and I took it myself while on vacation, ironically while in Canada.
Since I live in the USA I can't log into the Canadian store and "Report A Concern" with the review.
Any idea on how to resolve this?
Anyone in Canada care to post a counter "review" clearing up the situation for me?
    Ugh.

To answer the general point rather than the specific question: this is a very good example why it's better not to read one's reviews! As we all know, the only qualification for writing a review is having a credit card with a billing address in the country in question. Anyone who uses the App Store will quite quickly realise that (a) the quality of the reviews is variable and (b) if someone genuinely had an issue of this type then he'd communicate directly with the publisher or with Apple rather than posting a pathetic one-star whinge.
In general I think we might all benefit if we all, as App Store developers, said something like the following in our product descriptions:
    1. We do not read or comment on our App Store reviews.
    2. We provide a public space where you can post comments and support requests, at http://xxxxxxxxxxx. We read every posting and respond to it in public.
This will not stop nutters from posting weird reviews, but it will make the readers of those reviews think: "if this is a problem, why didn't he post it in the publisher's comment space?" and consequently pay less attention to what the nutters say.
To focus a little closer in to this particular case: it's worth remembering that we are not politicians. Politicians are always anxious that any error or misrepresentation should be corrected "for the record". It seems comic sometimes but for them it's necessary, or someone will dig it out years later and say "well, if it isn't true that you said/did/thought this, +why didn't you say so at the time?"+ But we aren't politicians, and it's a lot easier for us just to leave a lot of stuff alone as being beneath contempt. I've also had reviews that claim the exact opposite of the truth (I know because people have told me about them) but in the end they're best ignored.
The review in question is pretty innocuous commercially, I don't think it would make anyone less likely to buy the application.
As for your own reputation: if you don't like Apple publishing accusations of theft against you, there is a law of libel and it is there for this purpose. Use it. Get the address of Apple's legal department and write to them. Invite them very politely to take down the offending material or publish a rebuttal. It will cost them a lot more to defend the case than it will to take down the review. I once found some stolen IP being offered through an Apple online store, and after a friendly conversation with Apple and one email, it was taken down within days.

Would LOVE to have it fixed.
Not very happy with Apple and this 'mishap'...
it does NOT have the cellular wifi, or whatever it's called. it's not capable of connecting to a carrier... just through regular wifi.

    1. Turn off router for 30 seconds and on again.

  • Convert Amp sim VST/AU to Audio Track.

Can I convert a guitar track using either built in logic X amp sims or another brand i.e Amplitube to an Audio track so I can save CPU power when I'm done with the track?
I remember I could do something like this in Cubase, obviously I cant change the sound ( If youve ever used amp sims thats one of the great parts is you can play along as a Marshall then change it later to a Mesa ) once converted but thats the point is too save CPU power so I can keep making more tracks?
Thanks a bunch in advance to any help
    S

Ok so heres some screenshots to show you where im at, if im confusing my point or If im doing it wrong. I got 8 mic'd drums in a stack and i just recorded some quick audio on my laptop without my usual interface ( NI RigKontrol ) so I dont know if that makes a differance.
The two shots are what options I get when I right click.
And when I bounce in place and then what it does.
When I play it back I get no sound...Do I need to select the section, have record enabled on/off or could it have something to do with it being an AU?.
Not to sound condisending but just so we're clear in cubase 4 when I had it I could record a track with guitar-rig and any other VST I had on the channel, Then when I was done turn it into an Audio track that was un-doable and I could go and use guitar-rig again on a new channel and stil hear the other track/s so cpu load was always minimal. Thats what I'm hopeing to do.
    thanks again

If still OFF, keep on charger and Reset, hold both home and power buttons until the iPhone begins to start. This can take about 20 seconds of holding both buttons while on charger. If still problem, make Genius reservation or set up Service and take or send to Apple for resolution under Warranty.
