Overmodulated/distorted/garbled audio on G4 (Digital Audio)

Just got a used G4 (Digital Audio Model #M7688LL/A) from a somewhat nationally-known used Mac store for about $200. It has a 533 Mhz processor with 512MB of RAM. It had 10.3.9 pre-installed.
Everything works great. Even the startup chime. Perfect. But then after it has started up, the sound is horrible. From the alerts to playing music from iTunes, it sounds completely overmodulated or garbled.
I repaired permissions. I zapped the PRAM. Nothing changed.
I'm thinking it's a conflict between the OS and the old computer (it used to sell with OSX 10.0.3). The start-up chime is fine. Once the system loads up, yuck.
I plan to put in a call to the after-sales tech support. But I hope I don't need to ship it back or pay a bunch to have it replaced. I also hope I don't need to buy another copy of Tiger. Maybe Tiger would solve it (I found a support document here that said certain Powerbook G4 audio was garbled until installing Tiger. I don't know what to do and money is tight.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

It sounds like a hardware problem. If you call them, they will most likely tell you to ship it back. Alternatively, if you need some new speakers buy yourself USB speakers. That way the audio will be coming out through your USB, which I'm assuming works fine. However, 10.3.x doesn't support USB speakers, so you will have to get 10.4.

  • QT 7.6.9 for Windows still gives garbled audio when playing SMIL movies

I have smil movies with captions but on Windows, they play with garbled audio. I was hoping version 7.6.9 would solve this issue, but it's still occurring. Is this being addressed at all? Note that when the movie plays on its own without using the SMIL text track it plays just fine, so it's not the movie.
I've embedded one in a web page so you can see:
    http://www.personal.psu.edu/pzb4/smil.html
This works fine on a Mac, but I get garbled audio on Windows. I get similar results just playing it in the QT player on windows outside the browser.

There's no webpage showing up. The file trys to play but real erratic, so much so the mouse pointer was jumping back and forth between dual monitors and then locking up the computer. After letting it run it's course then and saving the file it showed as 4 KB? I could do nothing with it, I recall Kirk one time saying something about saving as a reference file and when done does not come thru in a website...? Also when saved it's showing as Quick Draw format?

  • Drops conversation and all you hear is garbled audio

During conversations, the voice is lost and all that is heard is garbled audio, not resembling a voice at all.  Sometimes your voice echoes back at you, the. The call is dropped. Sometimes when you are trying to make a call, it will display "calling..." and no connection is made, when you push end and return to the home screen, the green bar displays "touch to return to call" The only way to get out of that loop is to power of the phone.
    Anyone else with this problem?

Here's the fix...Go to your nearest Apple store. Have them run a diagnostic. I went to Bridge St. today and Austin found, after the diagnostic, that my reception module was defective and that there were some program issues. He replaced the module and tweaked the programming (?) and, knock wood, so far so good.  This did require backing up the phone to iCloud, because a factory reset is necessary. This issue has nothing to do with the micro cell tower or turning off your cellular data. It is a free fix, if your phone is under warranty (mine is 20 days old). Hope this helps someone else get rid of the "Alien Voices" =)

  • Safari-Leopard: Quicktime Videos from Web Pages - GARBLED AUDIO

OK, so here is the problem:
    1. I am using (the new) Leopard, and all updates have been downloaded and installed successfully.
    2. In Safari, when an (embedded) video is present, the video appears perfect. However, the audio is garbled, and unintelligible. This is true for EVERY video I've tried to view on a webpage.
    3. I've saved a few videos as Quicktimes to my desktop, and opened directly with Quicktime. The same problem occurs, without fail - GARBLED AUDIO
    4. The most recent "test" was a Quicktime using the AAC, H.264 Codec.
    5. It seems as if I have installed all of the appropriate plug-ins, but can't be sure of this.
So it seems as if this might indeed be a Quicktime problem, and not a Safari problem, but thought I would post here in case others are having similar issues. I will make the same post in the Quicktime forum as well.
    What is the solution?!?!?!??

    Hi Robert
A number of Quicktime/Safari issues have surfaced with Leopard. Here's one example.
Have you looked at your Audio settings in your System Preferences>Quicktime>Advanced>Mime settings panel? In my panel, everything is selected except for Sound Designer II. Might be helpful to uncheck the Audio setting, select "done", then go back to the panel and select it again. Close the panel and try an audio in Safari again.
In your response here, please provide a link to your thread in the Quicktime forum. While Apple discourages posting the same issue in multiple forums, I think in this case the issue may be more Quicktime related than specific to Safari. So good to cover both bases.

  • How do i fix garbled audio

How do i fix garbled audio?  making slideshow with narration. have tried two methods. first to record small audio files and attach them to individual slides: easier to edit audio recorded in quick time
second method is to record voice over narration in keynote, so far as I can determine this method requires corrections to re-record entire presentation.
in either case when I play slide show my audio files play with glitches, stops and losses that garble the message.

No not always, but sometimes. I have had my macbook pro in for service they replaced a speaker and cable and dvd drive, full system diagnostic.... still having the same problem. I am not sure if it is something I am doing, software glitch requiring full restore or a memory problem... it seems almost like a streaming problem to me but i am unsure of myself and the apple system diagnosis should have turned up any hardware problems??

  • P775-S7160 Phantom Garbled Audio

    I'm running Windows 7 - 64
With Internet cable installed / network active I get garbled audio (sounds like maybe bad sample rate conversion?) even when browser is not active (!)
After disconnecting from the internet for a few seconds the sound goes away
When subsequently reconnecting to internet the sound eventually returns ( in a few minutes )
This just started a few days ago - did a virus scan and came up clean

A few things can cause this, usually it's a driver issue but this sounds like maybe the driver is crashing and reloading. Could be another app is calling the driver. It's really hard to tell.
A few things to try is making sure no other apps or widgets are running especially ones that use core audio. Also make sure your hard drive isn't going to sleep, this could be happening when you take your break. Also try recording to a external drive this way it won't be affected by the main drive other activity's.

  • Stuttering, garbled audio

I've also been experience this audio problem on my Sony Vaio, it's been a little over 1 week now with the stuttering, garbled audio. Everything is up to date, I've disabled all my add-ons, still having the same issue. YouTube works fine when I uninstalled Flash (HTML5 plays fine). I use Firefox mostly, this also happens when I browse on Chrome. I can't find any solution to this problem.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Garbled audio when exporting movies using iMove 09

    Hello,
Whenever I try to export my Movie using iMovie 09, certain scenes have garbled audio.
The scene play properly within iMovie 09.
It also has the same garbled audio when I try to share it to iDVD.
    Any suggestions?

There is a well known audio glitch in iMovie '09. If making speed changes to your project, such as slow or fast motion, you must use only the presets shown on the speed slider. These are: 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, 400% and 800%. Do not use custom speeds, by manually entering your own percentages.
If you don't use the presets, you are highly likely to see audio problems in the exported project. As you have noted, the glitch appears only in the export but is not evident in preview (within iMovie).
The only fix (other than going through a convoluted process) is to adjust all custom speed changes to the presets. This is a nuisance, of course, as you may have to resync the video and audio where you have added voiceovers or music tracks.

  • Scratchy, distorted, garbled sound from MP3s files

I'm having really horrible scratchy, distorted, garbled sound from MP3 files. AAC encoded files play extremely clearly on iTunes 10.5

After reviewing all comments, it appears that this issue is squarely with the 10.5 upgrade that Apple did on I tunes. I have done all the uninstall and re-install that you can do.  Songs play fine on some, terrible on others, but yet they all will play on Windows Media Player. I can't believe it is the chipset for those that AMD processors, because everything was fine on the 10.4.  So,  Apple please fix this or offer us a way to uninstall from the 10.5 to the 10.4 where everything should be okay.   Awaiting your reply with thousands of others!

  • Garbled audio when using 24-bit, 5.1 audio on X-Fi Titanium...

Hi there... Everytime I try to play a 24-bit, multichannel audio file, the sound gets garbled and distorted. I usualy play them with KMplayer and AC3filter...
I'm using the latest drivers, some people even sugested me to try older ones...But I have some games that don't work well with older drivers...
    What can I do?
    Thanx in advance!

  • Distorted AIF audio, WAV fine

I've always used AIF sound files in FCP and FCE with no trouble, but on the current project (in FCE 2.0.3), AIF files are blaring, overmodulated and distorted; they sound fine when opened in QT. I haven't changed any settings in FCE (that I know of). However, WAV files (which I've never used in FCE before) sound fine in FCE.
Is there some setting I'm not aware of that I need to attend to?

+I have various quicktime files on the pc that played fine but are now unable to be viewed. I have downloaded again, they play fine... but now a few days later... audio, but no video at all... not "scrambled", just video "noise", really.+
"Green" gets me thinking about issues with DirectX on the PC.
Have you tried the "Disable Direct3D acceleration in QuickTime" section from the following document? (iTunes uses QuickTime for video playback, so the same basic troubleshooting procedures apply.)

  • Chatting with video causes garbled audio on one end

I'm having an audio problem when conducting video chats. The audio I'm hearing from my buddy is garbled and echoing during video chats. If we switch to audio only chat, the sound is pristine.
    Here's the setup:
    Mac Mini/Core solo/ OS X 10.4.8 <------> MBP/C2Duo/ OS X 10.4.10
AUDIO SOUNDS FINE ............................................ AUDIO GARBLED
I've tried switching the video bandwidth from none, to 1.5, to 100k on both machines to no avail. I've also set the Quicktime streaming speed to 1.5Mbps.
Anyone expereince anything like this before?

    Thanks for the suggestions Ralph.
I checked the sys prefs>Sound>Input tab, and the microphone level on the Mac mini was cranked up all the way and clearly clipping. I brought the slider down all the way and now the level is peaking about 3/4 of the way across the meter.
For what it's worth the audio only sounds garbled on the MacBook Pro (listening to buddy on Mac Mini). The audio coming FROM the MBP sounds fine on the Mini. I'm actually hearing an echo on the MBP presumably coming from the mini when I talk. It seems as if a noise-gate threshold is set too low. Another point of interest, on the MBP underneath the audio input level slider is a checkbox for Ambient noise reduction. The mini does not have that option.
The camera on the Mini is a Dynex DTCAM, which didn't work at all until they released a new driver this June '07. I believe Apple also made a change to the OS that helped enable USB cams in iChat. In addition, I've also got the iChatUSBCam drivers installed.
Again, and audio-only chat between the MBP & Mini sounds perfect with no echos and no garbling, but as soon as video is introduced the audio quality suffers dramatically with distortion and echos.

  • PowerBook G4 Garbled Audio

I have a 4 year old 12" PowerBook G4 which I recently upgraded to Leopard from Tiger. For the past week, when the machine boots the, chime is garbled and the volume level is relatively low. When I play anything through the built-in speakers, it's garlbled and has a popping sound louder than the music or audio. The popping sound persists after the audio ends and I sometimes have to reboot to get rid of it.
Plugging in headphones or running external speakers-- everything sounds fine-- it's just garbled when the internal speakers are used.
I tried doing a PRAM reset and booting off of external hard drive with Tiger on it-- with the exact same symptoms.
Other than this audio issue, everything runs great.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

OK I have 10.5.5 and today my speakers stopped working. I get the no sign when I try and do anything. I had no plugged in head phones in ages. When I go to system preferences and click sound I show internal speakers type built in audio- it says nothing about digital. The out put volume is there but grayed out. After reading other post I tried plugging in head phones. I have no sound there either. Please respond. I don't know why I keep posting on these things, no one ever responds- so please prove me wrong. Personal e-mail are fine [email protected] anything to solve my problem since MAC offers no support after your first year. Oh another point I tried several re-boots

  • Distortion in audio when exporting HDV to tape

I'm having trouble sending a native HDV project back to tape. The picture looks fine on the export, but the audio is severely distorted. It's not overmodulation. I have a -10 limiter on the audio master track, and the VUs on my deck don't show anything like any clipping. But the sound it's making is similar to clipping. Any ideas? Thanks,
    Stu

    Intel Core2 6400
    2.13GHz, 2GB RAM
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 3450/4000
    Sony HV-U15 deck

    Howard,
Thanks for the reply. It's hard to describe the sound...it actually reminds me of the sound a 16mm projector makes when it loses its loop, sort of a strobing distortion. As for constancy, no it's definitely not constant in the sense that, say, ground loop hum is constant. It's "attached" to the sounds as the play back, so that when the timeline is very quiet it's hardly audible, but when you get any sound at all, it comes up. I know that might sound like clipping, but I don't see how it could possibly be for a few reasons:
    1. There's a -9 limiter on the audio master track.
    2. It sounds perfectly fine both in timeline playback and when exported to Encore.
    3. The VUs in the original source clips, the timeline, and the deck on output all show clean levels with no clipping.
I'm wondering if it's related to my deck, but I haven't had a chance to check that yet. I'll try outputting to the camera when I get back in to work on Monday, but if you have any other ideas as to what the cause might be, I'd be happy to hear them. Thanks.
    Stu
