Overnight battery discharge

Morning all
A rather strange occurance overnight which I hope someone else may have experienced and be able to offer some advice/explanation on.
iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.2 was at 100% battery on going to bed last night, on waking this morning it was completely flat/dead. So overnight it had totally discharged itself but I really don't know why, it's never done this before.
A rogue app perhaps? An app not shutting down properly maybe? Any ideas guys?
I'm not charging it at work and will see if it will hold it's charge once full again.
Stu

That happens sometimes when you have wifi on and some other things on. To maximize battery life see:

    Why is my iPad1 battery discharging after iOS 5 download?

    It is not just you - something is wrong...
    I noticed a significant difference.  Normally my iPad 2 would sit in my bag overnight and drain just a few percentages.  Now it drains almost completely.  I have turned off all services, fetch, location, etc - it helps a little, but the battery life is worse than before.  When using my iPad 2 during normal usage, I could get through a couple flights and still have more than 50% battery - now I am lucky if it makes it the same time before getting to 0%.  Something is wrong with the new iOS 5.  I wish I wouldn't have updated...

  • Intermittent rapid battery discharge

    Hi,
    I’ve occasionally had my battery discharge in a matter of hours from a full charge.
    I always dock the phone for sync and recharge overnight. Maybe 5 times now in it's 5 month life, it has completely discharged by noon. (usually, I’ve got 70% remaining by 10pm.)
    A couple of times, the phone was noticeably warm. Today, it didn’t feel warm, but it was half discharged by 10:00am, and 10% by noon (without using safari, or mail for more than 10 minutes, and not using phone at all).
    This has happed with, and without Wi-Fi enabled. In fact, I turned Wi-Fi off when at 50%, and even powercycled, and reset the phone, and it still was sucked dry.
    Anyone experience this before? Any insight whether I’ve got hardware problems, or is it a mode that the phone hangs up in?
    Thanks
    JS

    I had the same problem, and I do not have a Yahoo account. Took it to Apple Store, told me it was a software issue. They had me do a full restore, and leave the phone without any data on it for one day to see if the problem happened again. (For me, it wasn't intermittent, it was happening every time I charged up) Believe it or not, that was the answer. I haven't had the problem since. The guy said the software gets corrupt and tricks the phone into thinking the battery is dead when it really isn't. Go figure.

  • Toshiba WT310 in hibernation mode: battery discharges within few days

    As the title says if fully charged and left in hibernation mode the battery discharges within a few days.
    I thought it might have been due to "connected mode" but it isn't supported anyway.
    Any ideas?

    Well unsurprisingly not as easy as that after all.
    I rang the number gave them the ID# for my support call, let him read through, explained again what I'd done to try and resolve. Asked him what we do next.
    "I'll just go and ask my colleague"
    So according to his colleague losing 10% power overnight when switched off is apparently as expected for a laptop/tablet.
    I begged to differ and pointed out that according to the manual the battery should last 70 days when the Tablet is shutdown. Bit of a difference between 10 weeks and just over 1 week I said.
    We then had to find that page in the manual to make sure I wasn't lying, I wasn't.
    Still didn't mean there was a problem apparently, so I send it back and it's NFF I get charged 60+
    So I said OK you send in writing that the manual is inaccurate and amend the manual and I'll accept that.
    Can't do that...
    Well then what next?
    Escalated to the next level of support! Though I did have to assure them I was switching it off and not putting it into sleep by accident (the flashing light is the give away there) and that whilst I was waiting I would test it using "shutdown /p".
    me "Shutdown -p sure if you like"
    him "no /p!" didn't bother explaining it worked either way.
    By the way I manage an IT Support Dept we do Hardware, Software and Network support, 10% power drain in 24 hours when shut down for a Laptop is not an expected thing. Not unless the battery is stuffed rather than FAIR as mine apparently is.
    The story continues...

  • IPhone battery discharges even when turned off since iOS 5.1.1

    Since updating to iOS 5.1.1 I have had battery problems, discharging at around 4% per hour even when not used. Turning off every concieveable service and reloaded iOS as a new device unfortunately has not solved the problem. I have resorted to leaving the phone plugged in all of the time and recently started to turn it off overnight. To my surprise, the phone continues to discharge when turned off! I couldn't find this problem when I searched (apologies if I didn't search hard enougth!)

    I have been waiting for months for the next iOS to see if it would rectify my battery drain problem but I continued to have the battery discharge problem after installing iOS6 .
    My Home button has been playing up with random no responses and random double clicks, so I replaced the home button hoping that may also address the battery drain issue - no joy.
    Then I had a look to see if I had added any Apps when the problem first appeared at the time of upgrading to iOS5.1.1. (You can view Apps by date in iTunes on the iPhone Apps tab.)
    It turns out that on about the same day as the iOS 5.1.1 update I also added the Lifesize ClearSea video conferencing App. Today I disabled the App in iTunes (unchecked it) and resynced the iPhone. I believe this removes the App from the phone whilst leaving it in my iTunes so I can add it back easily. For the first time in months my phone is now cold rather than luke warm.
    Superficially at least it seems that ClearSea has been running in the background, even when manually quitted and even when the iPhone was powered OFF! I will report back in a few days to confirm this was the culprit.
    Five months with a phone that barely lasts a day has been a real pain...

  • Battery discharge: Lion 10.7.2 vs Snow Leopard 10.6.8

    Has anyone noticed that Lion consumes more resources than Snow Leopard thus causing faster battery discharge?
    YMMV, but it would be interesting to see of others can get similar results. Do you suppose Lion 7.3 will increase or decrease resource usage and what affect will it have on battery life?
    I called Apple about the battery discharge issue on my 2 week old MacBook Pro with Lion 7.2. I was only getting about 1/2 of the 7.7 WIFI hours advertised. They gave me the usual "if depends" on WIFI, system settings, applications, etc., i.e. such things as cpu and memory load (paging/swapping=>disk i/o), other disk activity, and a few other things.
    My large expenditure on the new MacBook spurred me to investigate what was going on using the Activity monitor. I configured my old MacBook Pro (mid 2009) and my new MacBook Pro (late 2011) with the same system preferences. I reset both the PRAM and SMC on both machines to maximize the battery charge (documented elsewhere).
    Obviously, a direct hardware comparison would not be meaningful but when you look at the operating systems there is a significant difference between Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 and Lion OS X 10.7.2. Lion uses much more resources than Snow Leopard.
    My Observations:
    The first value I list is for OS X 10.6.8 and the second for OS X 10.7.2. I tried numerous other combinations but these nicely summarizes my results.
    1) I started with only the Activity monitor, iTunes Helper, and Epson EEventmanager manager running, No WIFI or any other user processes
    CPU % idle               : 98.75 vs 99.4 (i.e. both machines were literally idle)
    No. of threads           : 179   vs 277  --> + 55%
    Kernel threads           : 60    vs 82   --> +37%
    Processes                : 41    vs 54   --> +32%
    Wired Memory MB          : 480   vs 864  --> +80%
    Active Memory MB         : 198   vs 407  --> +106%
    Memory Used  GB          : 0.808 vs 1.32 --> +63%
    Percentage of 4 GB       : 20%   vs 33%  --> +65%
    Virtual Machine size GB  : 96    vs 149  --> +55%
    2) With WIFI and Safari added
    CPU % usage              : 72.9 vs 91.02 (i.e. both machines were not very busy)
    No. of threads           : 253  vs 376 --> +49%
    Kernel threads           : 60   vs 82 --> +37%
    Processes                : 51   vs 63 --> +24%
    Wired Memory MB          : 669  vs 1007 --> +51%
    Active Memory MB         : 600  vs 1190 --> +98%
    Memory Used  GB          : 1.57 vs 2.47 --> +57%
    Percentage of 4 GB       : 39%  vs 62% --> +59%
    Virtual Machine size GB  : 131  vs 191 --> +46%
    Look especially at the percentage of memory used. In either case, I measured no paging nor swapping. But, as you can see, with the increase of memory used with Lion when WIFI and Safari were added you could quickly push the memory as more process are added and start paging and swapping to/from disk hence use more battery charge.
    The increase in number of threads, processes, memory usage, virtual machine size, and WIFI activity would imply that Lion would have to consume more battery charge than Snow Leopard as you use more cpu/memory to chase more threads.
    I looked at WIFI usage and it involves a lot of chatter between the computer and the internet. Over time a lot of packets are sent/received even when no data is being passed and would be a drain on the battery. There would be a greater drain when there is data passed because of the additional CPU and memory needed. But, in todays world, you cannot run without an ethernet or WIFI connection because of the dependency on the information/data on internet cloud.

    MacBook Pro 13", mid 2009, OS X 10.6.8, 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3, 5400 rpm Hard Drive
    MacBook Pro 15", late 2011,OS X 10.7.2, 2.4 GHZ Inter Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, 7500 rpm Hard Drive

  • My iphone 4s automatically getting turned off (blank black screen) and not getting started until full battery discharge, after updating to ios 8.0.1

    My iphone 4s automatically getting turned off (blank black screen) and not getting started until full battery discharge. Even on long pressing power button - screen doesn't showing anything - not even "needs charging logo".
    This is happening only since I have updated to new ios version (ios 8.1).
    Is there anyone facing similar issue?? Any suggestion?!?

  • Battery discharging faster since ipad 3 upgrade why ?

    since upgrading my ipad3 the battery discharges more quickly anyone else got this problem?

    What did you upgrade? Should be the same. Have you checked your brightness setting?
    The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
    Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
    How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
    At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Equium M40X -Battery discharging. Please help!

    I recently bought an Equium M40X - 149, and i couldnt understand why when the ac adapter is plugged in the battery discharges itself and the computer switches off! So i took it back to the shop and they said it is just the cycle of the battery and i would need to go into the bios to change the settings.
    I went into the bios but i couldnt find anything that i could change to stop this!! Can anyone point me in the right direction as it is inconvinient for me to keep taking the battery out when i want to use the laptop!!
    thank you
    Gemma

    Hello Gemma
    I dont know if I have understood you right but if the notebook is connected to AC power supply it can not be possible that the unit switches off itself. Not because of power supply. If the unit is connected to AC power supply you can remove the battery and it should work without any problem.
    Sorry but I have no explanation for this and in my opinion you should contact Authorized Toshiba service partner in your country. Explain them the problem and thay can check the unit. The warranty is valid and if there is some hardware malfunction the costs will be covered.
    Bye

    Hi, thanks for the suggestion. I have tried as you suggested, and when opening the "purchased" apps some have the icloud logo next to them, but I only have "OPEN" against "Find My iPhone". When opening it up, it goes through the same routine; needs to be updated before proceeding, and wouldn't update because I don't have IOS8.
    Anything else I could try, or am I doomed!

    Yeah nj7_ i'm craving for that setting.Unfortunately,brightness adjustment isn't present on Series 40 V3 phones We're still waiting an answer from Nokia.AFAIK,previous series 40 v2 phones had this setting..eg N5140 and N5140i.
    Factors that can drain the battery fast on N6300
    -16Million colour display
    -It uses a BL-4C 820mah(Which is kinda insufficient)
    -The screen is very bright

    Iphone 5 battery discharging too quickly, even with wifi, bluetooth and location services off. The battery is only lasting about 6 hours.  How can i check what is causing this.  It was lasting about 24 hours before.

    Just shared. Turn your brightness To as you can see The page. Turn of icloud if not use it If you just buy this phone. Let the battery totally drain couple of time and fully charge again. It will became great after that.my phone take 2 days to totally drain.awsome. If your location to far away from network transmitter it will became little bit hot at the battery.if you very near to wifi you will feel  your iphone5 it surf like a ferrari + no heat at all.     P/n; dont look at pecentage of your battery. Just take note how many hour until its totally drain.
