Overprint issue in InDesign CS3

We had an issue of overprint off in color Black in InDesign CS2/CS3. But we enabled the Overprint in preference menu. We have placed the figure in InDesign and create PDF through postscript using Distiller 8.0. Open the PDF in Acrobat 8.0 professional and run the Preflight by using the option "List 100% black objects set to knock out". It shows an error of Overprint off only in figures but it does not show in text that is set in InDesign. Please help me to solve this issue.

Bob,
Our client does not required for exported PDF and we've been asking to create postscript through PDF. The specification was supplied by printer to create postscript. Please let me know is there any variance between postscript through PDF and Export PDF?

  • Booklet issues with InDesign CS3 on Mac, and Xerox WorkCentre 7655 booklet maker

I'm having several booklet making issues I'm hoping someone can help me with.
I am on a MacPro, OS X Leopard, InDesign CS3. We have a Xerox WorkCentre 7655 that has booklet making capability. The network server is a PC with Microsoft 2003 server on it.
The booklet I am making uses two 11x17 trays - one for cover stock for the cover and one for regular 24 lb paper for the insides. The layout is single pages rather than spreads - spreads did not work at all.
From InDesign using the printer, the cover pages come out backwards and mirror image. The inside pages are upside down and on only half the page. I did not not InDesign file/booklet because that seemed to create even more problems with the Xerox booklet settings, and I don't know how to try InDesign booklet and not the Xerox settings.
I tried making a pdf and printing booklets from that. On the Macintosh, I can't figure out how to tell it the pages are 11x17 so it keeps giving me an error that the printer is waiting for 8 1/2 x 11.
I actually did get the booklets to print properly using the pdf file and a PC, but any gray graphics came out lilac. The text was black, and the covers were the correct colors - only the inside graphics were the wrong color.
I hope this makes some sense - I really need help. I've tried everything I can think of. I spent a lot of time with Xerox 1st and 2nd level support, and they have washed their hands of this. So I'm posting here hoping someone has some ideas.
Any other information anyone might need for this issue? Thanks so much.

I have a similar machine configuration and have had many issues printing to an HP 9500mfp. Pages rotate, mirror, 2-sided both print on same side. I've lost the "bookletmake" function. Jobs will not recognize paper trays (meaning I have to manually tell it which paper tray holds the tabloid stock). I've tried using the "Page Setup" dialog box to no avail. On occasion, I can get some of the features to work with a pdf printing from Acrobat. Sometimes, that doesn't work either - never with any kind of predictability. Printing to the HP 4700 is more reliable. I've downloaded the updated "Leopard" compatible driver from HP, but it fixed no issues. When I tried contacting tech support for HP, the replied that this is an OS issues and not with equipment, leaving me SOL.

  • Page Setup Issue with InDesign CS3 and Xerox DC240 w/ external Fiery

    Running on OS 10.4.11
Printing to Xerox DC2400 w/ External Fiery (driver v1.1 v3016.102)
    Application InDesign CS3 v. 5.0.2
When I send a document in CS3 to print, I have to constantly go to the page setup and select the proper paper size and orientation in order to print properly. In CS2, I was able to set all this by simply going to the Setup window and designating my paper size and orientation there. Does anyone have the same or similar issue? Were you able to resolve it? All suggestions are welcomed. I have contacted Xerox and they say that this is not an issue with their driver, they say that this is an application level issue!!
    Thank you.

I think I may have figured it out by trial and error. In the Pages palette, there's an option in the pulldown called "Panel Options". I set both sizes to "Small" and turned off "Thumbnails". Seems to have worked - knock wood. Presumably when thumbnails is turned on, InDesign is updating the contents of the document AND the pages palette thumbnail simultaneously. Anyway, that seems to have fixed it. Just wanted to post this solution FYI for anyone else who may be having this problem.

  • InDesign CS3 crashing on launch

    INDD cs3 5.4
    Mac (Intel)  OS 10.5.8
    Hi there,
Having major issues with indesign CS3 crashing upon launch.
It gets as far as saying "starting up service registry". before bumming out.
Previously it had been running without any major issues for at least a year or so. Not recently updated anything on my machine so curious as to why this is now happening!
    So far I've tried...
    1) deleting indesign prefs and cache
    2) reparing indesign
    3) removing suitcase fusion and fusion's core
    4) repaired disk permissions
    5) started up in safe mode AND created new user account on mac too
    6) used font doctor to repair / examine font library.
    7) turned off ALL fonts including system fonts.
So far nothing has worked!  Does anybody have the answer?!?
    Thanks in advance.

Make sure you have the last patch, 5.0.4 build 682 (hold down the CMD key while choosing About InDesign from the help menu). You said you do, but verify it. Make sure, too, that the fonts mentioned inthe KB article are active.
If all else fails, think about uninstalling, running the clean script, and reinstalling.

  • InDesign CS3 & Leopard - Continual crashing all the time!

3 months ago (Jan 2008) when Adobe released update 5.0.2 to InDesign CS3, the release notes read:-
"This update does not address recently identified issues running Adobe InDesign CS3 on Mac OS
X Leopard (v10.5.1). Known issues include the following:
    • Users are unable to hide InDesign CS3 using the cmd+h keyboard shortcut.
    • InDesign CS3 may unexpectedly quit when using the Place, Save, Save As or Export
commands using either the OS or Adobe dialog boxes.
Unfortunately, there are no workarounds for these known issues. Adobe and Apple are working
closely to provide fixes. Initial testing indicates that these fixes should be provided through an
update to Mac OS X Leopard. Consequently, it is not part of the InDesign CS3 5.0.2 update.
No public schedule for these fixes is available at this time, but both companies understand their
urgency and are working to address this."
It's just as bad (if not worse) in 10.5.2. 3 months and no solution. No word from Apple, even though my work G5 is submitting several crash reports per day to both Adobe and Apple.
If anyone from Apple reads these lists, could they confirm they are going to fix this, or do I revert to Tiger, trash Leopard completely.
    <post edited by host>

Hey, I've also been having the same issues with InDesign CS3 since installing Leopard on my iMac G5 PPC... have reinstalled said OS and software 4 times now... but still getting crashes and the dreaded 'serious error...InDesign is shutting down...' warnings when relinking, replacing and exporting (sometimes when saving too) in ID.
It seems there are so many of us having these problems, so at least it isn't user/machine-specific (unless I need more RAM..). However, one of the support guys at Apple (UK) gave me another helpful (temporary) fix, which works until they fix it PROPERLY. I tried working from the Desktop and cutting/pasting everything into a new file, but this one works better:
Quit ID, go to your User (the house symbol)>Library>Caches>Adobe InDesign>Version 5>'InDesign Saved Data' and add '.old' onto this file or just drag it to the Desktop.
Then go to Library>Preferences>Adobe InDesign>Version 5>'InDesign Defaults' and add '.old' onto that file as well or drag it to the Desktop.
Then restart ID and you'll notice your preferences are back to default (i.e. picas instead of mm/inches etc.) and no more crashes - until you start changing the prefs again....
The other tip was that the account you work from has become corrupted, but I found the above fix works for a while. Hope that's helped, but like the rest of you, this problem is wasting valuable working time and needs sorting ASAP.

  • InDesign CS3 crashing on "Place..."

I'm having an issue with InDesign CS3 for Windows crashing when I attempt to use the "Place..." command. I've tried resetting my preferences and rebooting my system but neither of those has fixed the problem. Does anyone have any input as far as other possible solutions?

I've also had recurring problems with crashing, but with CS4.
I'll be cutting & pasting text into various column-sized text frames and at some point it doesn't allow me to do it. Everything freezes up, and I must use Task Manager to close the non-responding program.
This occurred with my installing of CS4. (And yes, I have done the "Export to .idml to clear file corruption.")
Obviously this is a HUGE problem, and am seriously considering reverting back to CS3.

  • InDesign CS3 Print Booklet function

I have an issue with InDesign CS3 Print Booklet Function.
Certainly Print Booklet is not InBooklet by any stretch. It does however have to be an integral part of the InDesign Program(one of the reasons it is better than QuarkXPress).
Print Booklet takes the age old practice of creating 4 page signatures for booklets of 4-page multiples and when you get to 12-16 pages it mysteriously inserts blank pages making non-4 page multiple booklets. I have had 12 page booklets made into 14 and 16 page booklets into 18 pages.
Is there a fix for this issue forthcoming from Adobe, or has anyone discovered a workaround?
I do not want to teach students that they have to go to PDF's and use another way to impose, when it is an important part of InDesign.
    Jack Mertes

    >I click Printer Settings to make sure I've got spreads selected and crop marks etc.
Make sure you DON'T have the "print spreads" box checked when setting up to use Print Booklet.
    >make booklet makes low res pages in an InDesign file and Booklet CE 3.5 makes a new InDesign file up of individual PDFs but the pages are all out of order.
I'm not sure what you mean by "make booklet makes low res pages." Are you referring to Dave's MakeBooklet.jsx script? That simply places the pages from an existing InDesign file into a new file in Printer spread order. It's up to you what sort of resolution any page element has in the original file, or what PDF settings you use to make a PDF from the new file. Perhaps you need to adjust your View > Display Quality setting?
The pages in an imposed file SHOULD be "all out of order." You are looking at printer's spreads, not reader's spreads. Are they not in the correct order for printing?

  • Indesign CS3 error: "Network connection was lost..."

    Hi
Anybody out there experiencing this error message when working in Indesign on Snow leopard? "Network connection was lost..."
Funny thing is the machine is not connected to a server or internet.
The indesign doc had been fine, saved it, closed it, reopened it and exported a pdf. When I went to re-open it, the error came.
Now, I read online that there have been issues with renaming docs, or folders, possibly with relocating them. Someone else suggested it may be a registry problem.
This problem is NOT fixed by trashing preferences or by repairing permissions or disk.
    Thanks!

    Hello Studio Guy,
I was just searching the forums to see if anyone else was experiencing the 'network connection was lost' issue from InDesign CS3 and came across your note.
Did you manage to find a solution for this?
We work on a network on PCs using Vista and we are getting this error message regularly and have no idea why.
Like you say this problem is NOT fixed by trashing preferences or by repairing permissions or disk.
    Did you find a solution?
    cheers,
    A

  • InDesign CS3 - Default Black color issue

Default Black color converted as Spot color in Indesign CS3.
I'm using default color "Black" in InDesign CS3. While creating PS from InDesign CS3 and convert it as PDF using Distiller 7 & 8, it would have changed as "Spot Color Black" instead of color "Black(CMYK)".
Open the swatch and duplicate the color "Black" and renamed as "C=0,M=0,Y=0,K=100". It would work properly. i.e. output PDF has CYMK black instead of Spot color.
We are unable to find/change globally because the Default color [Black] has both text and object.
We do not have any problem with this default black color in Indesign CS2.
It would be better if you provide a solid solution for this issue immediately. I need to send a test file to the printer on tomorrow (05/27/09).
I have attached Testing.pdf and screenshot for your reference.
Picture 1 shows the Default Black color converted as Spot color.
Picture 2 shows duplicate black color created from Default [Black] color and we don't find any issue.
    Thanks
    Johnson

First, this is a user forum, so all you'll get here is advice, not a "solid solution" from Adobe.
Second, the current versions of InDesign and Acrobat are 6 and 9, respectively, and there will never be any new patches issued for earlier versions. Adobe does not divert effort away from current development to patch old software.
This has been discussed here in the past few months. You should be able to find the thread if you search for keywords like spot black. For what it's worth, Acrobat 9 Pro's preflight does not detect a spot black in your sample PDF (though Pitstop might).
I'm curious why you feel the need to distill PDF rather than export (as I see you did with the file you posted)?

  • InDesign CS3 and SL - Image Import Issue

This one is fairly simple and there has been some discussion of it on the Adobe boards, but without any solid solution.
Issue: If you are in InDesign CS3 and you are using Command+D to replace an existing image, or you are importing a new image, InDesign will freeze up.
Work Around: Drag and drop the image into the image box directly from Finder.
Notes: I do not like this solution because it takes up more time, but it has been working for me this weekend. I reloaded InDesign CS3 completely and applied all of the updates, but it did not fix the issue.

    Hi, Curtis,
Just got SL today - am planning to put it on a MacBook Pro 17" intel that I share for work. We have C3 and had to replace another laptop recently so few $$$$ for upgrading problems until the economy picks up. We use CS3 and CS2 and a standalone InDesign 2 on three computers and so far use the CS3 for the final output. Here is the problem - if we place an image, it stays out of the ID file - our biggest client is fairly image heavy and they LOVE multiple minute revisions, so we don't want to have a bizillion copies of a developing doc with the extra heft of the actual images - esp when they want a lot of fine tuning on the images- by dragging and dropping don't you get an imbedded image? Did you find another solution since you first posted? Thanks

  • InDesign CS3 importing AI CS3 issue

    Hi all,
I've got an AI CS3 file that is set up with an 11x17 artboard. There are some colored boxes that flow outside the artboard, but I did that intentionally for a bleed. When I bring this AI file into InDesign CS3, the image is cropped to the 11x17 artboard. Where did the bleed go?
This is a huge issue as a lot of my fellow designers create backgrounds in AI to bring into InDesign and we need the bleed. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I realize making an eps avoids this issue but then you've got color issues, etc.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jen

    Here's the Illy CS2 Readme:
Adobe Illustrator CS2 has made a significant change in the way files
appear in other applications when saved in Illustrator. The artboard
(defined in the Document Setup dialog box, or when you create a new
file) will crop off anything that extends beyond it. Legacy files
(created in previous versions of Adobe Illustrator) are affected by this
new behavior when you save that legacy file in Adobe Illustrator CS2. If
you have artwork that extends beyond the edge of your artboard, either
move the artwork so that it fits on the artboard or increase the size of
the artboard in the Document Setup dialog box. This was an intentional
change in the way that Illustrator saves files, and ensures compliancy
with PDFX1a standards. This behavior is present in both Adobe
Illustrator CS2 and the 12.0.1 update, and will not be changed to the
old behavior in future versions of Adobe Illustrator.

  • How to detect knock out or overprint issue

We have sent a printer test file (PDF file) to printer using default swatch color [black] 100% in Indesign CS3. Our procedure is to create postscript through PDF using Distiller 7.0. Printer came back and said your document has "Black text is set to knock-out" should be set as overprint. I have attached a sample page that is being sent to printer.
We have enabled the option "Overprint [Black] Swatch at 100% under the preference menu.
How do we ensure the PDF document does not have knockout/overprint and please help me how to resolve this issue before we dispatch to printer in future.
    JohnArul

Acrobat's Separation Preview will let you highlight areas that are set to overprint. Go to Advanced > Print Production > Output Preview, then click on Color Warnings. No highlight, no overprint.
Did you create a new black swatch for the text? InDesign overprints it's default [Black] by default, so if it's not overprinting something's quirky. Also, you're almost always better off exporting a PDF rather than printing to a PostScript file. Export using PDF/X-1a or the same joboptions file you used for Distilling. I doubt the Distilling vs Exporting is the cause of the lack of overprint.

  • Creating an index in InDesign CS3 - is there any way to limit where and for what it looks?

I'm creating an index for a 300-page book using InDesign CS3 on both a PC with Windows XP home and a MacPro with OS X Leopard (I take this book back and forth between these two computers). I have created this as a book (.indb) file so I can use the Index panel with the book option checked to include all of the book chapters.
There are two things I was wondering how to do, if they can be done at all.
1 - I want the index to look for entries in the main pages only, not in the master pages.
2 - I'd like to be able to do only attributed text. For example, I'd like the index to find only the word people when it is bold and italic, and not all of the other places it may occur. Can I do this with a style also, paragraph and/or character?
    Thanks so much,
    Marcy

Read http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WS8721440D-5F68-4fd6-8115-CA3BEDACF001a.html (the online Help on indexes) -- it will probably answer a few questions.
One I do know immediately is your question on "picking up" stuff from master pages and only with formatting. InDesign does not make an index for you -- you have to (oh! manual labor!) mark the words that should appear in the index yourself. So just don't mark them on master pages, or when not bold and/or italic. You might be wondering about that little button "Mark all instances", well, it does what it say, and in your case you do not want to mark all instances.
The Capitalization issue is, AFAICR, somewhere in the Help; and so is your singular/plural stuff. The latter one is easy solved: if you mark a word to be indexed, ID asks you in a friendly dialog how it should be included, and that defaults to the current selected phrase, but you are free to edit the text in that dialog. ID does not mark the word or phrase; it inserts an invisible marker inside the to-be-indexed word that contains all information you enter in the Add Index Entry dialog, and it uses that to determine what page number to add. (That invisible marker is visible with "Show Invisible Characters", and can be cut, pasted and deleted at will -- so to remove a water melon, find the marker, and delete it.)

  • Missing Links in InDesign CS3

We are using InDesign CS3 and the program itself works good, the problem I'm having is all our data is located on a server and I have replaced the server with a new one, now when we open a document it has missing links and it takes forever searching for \\oldserver\pictures before popping up missing links where you then point it to \\newserver\pictures. My question is why does InDesign use the unc path and not mapped drive letters? Is there a way to fix this for future? Also is there anyway to fix previous short a fixing each and ever missing link? I see CS4 has the option to check links or not but I don't see any options for CS3. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tony

I'm not sure what that has to do with it? when opening up a documents it tries to resolve picture links the link pointing to \\oldserver\pictures (that server is no longer running) everything has been moved to \\newserver\pictures when the document finally opens you manually fix the links to point to new server save document then it opens fine the next time. I would rather have the links point to P:\Pictures as apposed to the unc path, the I wouldn't have this issue.
