Overprint Preview - I've hit something now its awry!

I've hit a key command where in overprint preview my metallic colours are previewing darker. They PDF fine, but the preview is all stuffed.
Any idea what I've done? I could leave it but my OCD won't let me.
Thanks

Yep, I'm certain thats what I did. The 875 had reverted to a spot. I still think it was a key command, as I wasn't using the mouse at the time, and didn't have the ink manager open.
Thanks for your help (and response).

I was renaming fields in a table using the F2 key. Must have hit something wrong as most, if not all, fields now say "no caption" under heirarchy listing, even on Live Cycle documents not open at the time. What the heck? Client is counting on me to get a form to them today and now I have no backups that will work. Tried older copies and they all say 'no caption' too. Help!!!

    Hi,
make a right-click in the hierarchie window.
From the context menu you can select if the names, captions or both will de displayed in the hierarchie-tree.

Firefox has a Bookmarks Sidebar you can open and close using Ctrl+b. That's pretty easy to hit if you're trying to bold something, but if a website doesn't intercept it, then it affects your sidebar.

  • Overprint Preview question and another issue...

    Hi...
    CS4, Win XP.
    Overprint Preview question:
The other day i sent a file for printing (poster) in PDF and CS2 formats. For some reason, the printer converted the file to a .tif and then printed. Parts dropped out... Both the PDF and CS2 files looked fine.Description follows:
    1/ Background black
2/ Design element over the black (blue lines to form a wave).
3/ Logo in red and white. Plus a line of text in red. And other text in white.
The white of the logo vanished. The red line of text kind of vanished... printed very faintly and only (i think in parts). Printer tried to do a patch job of printing the line separately and pasting... anyway... to cut a long story short, he wanted the final output in .tif. OK...
So, i converted to tif and sure enough... those parts vanished... did a search here and found the solution - view file in Overprint Preview and then in Attributes, turn off the Overprint Fill... so all well...
So, the question is, why does this happen? And, how, do i know in advance that x or y is likely to cause a problem? I have noticed in Bridge that sometimes, parts of a logo or a line of text does not show... but looks fine in AI or Acrobat... now realise the cause, but not the reason.
    The other issue...
Same black background(s)... placed Photoshop file/s with a transparent background... Prints fine at the printers (various machines and media) ... But on the laserprinter an HP Color Laser Jet CP1510 series, there's a dark patch around the image (the actual file area).
    Again, any ideas?
    Cheers...
    S

    Hi PrepressPro...
Many thanks for your earlier inputs, but not quite sure where you got the idea that i want someone or anyone to play detective... i've understood the Overprint problem... and moved on. If anything, maybe i was just musing and wondering if any particular action turns on "Overprint Fill"...
Or maybe, i was referring to the second question which has not been resolved yet... Quoting it below for easy reference:

To elaborate, the pix above are product shots which have been cut out and placed on a transparent background... The PS file is then placed in AI CS4 with the object option selected to maintain transparency. The transparent area is printing darker on the printer above. But is fine when sent to commerciqal printers...

  • Overprint preview + white ink = trouble

Is there _effective_ and _efficient_ way to preview % tints when artwork ink is lighter color than background paper/shirt/etc.? (Have same prob in Illus and InD.) This prob is similar to other threads but not quite same issue, I believe.
Examples: (1) Vector t-shirt art, one color ink (prob opaque white) on darker shirts, or (2) silver ink on black cover stock invitations.
First -- I clearly understand diff between tint % and transparency, knockout, overprint, "paper" color vs. white spot ink, etc. When designing and working with black only (K), we can use "inverse" color to simulate look for client approval.
BUT when creating document correctly, 30% tint of pale color spot doesn't "look" grey in overprint preview, as 30% opacity in transparency field does. Worse yet, if _both_ transp and tint % used in design phase, then essentially needs flattening before output; but want to preserve vector shapes so as not to interfere with printer's screens/angles, etc.
Am I missing software feature I should be using instead? Appreciate any suggestions,
    --romy
Lo-res from screenshot attached, as example.

I fully understand your problem. Does an opacity mask help?
Say you have a black background (the colour of your t-shirt which you can keep on a back layer, locked so that it's out of the way).
Now (on a top layer) do your tonal stuff using black and percentages of black.
Behind that (also on the top layer) make a rectancle of spot white that comes underneath the black artwork.
Now select everything on the top layer and in the Transparency palette hit on the little button at the top right of the palette and select Make Opacity Mask.
    Reverse the mask as required.
Reckon that ought to work and I don't think you need to flatten anything.

  • AIRasterizeSuite- Rasterize and Overprint Preview

    Hi,
I'm using the AIRasterizeSuite to obtain a raster of the entire document which matches what you see in Illustrator.
This is working fine and produces an RGBA raster.  When I select View->Overprint Preview it changes what you see in Illustrator but the result produced by AIRasterizeSuite->Rasterize doesn't change.
How can I get AIRasterizeSuite->Rasterize to respect Overprint settings?
    Thanks
    Stu.

This is odd, because from some of the things we see in our product, it looks like the Rasterize suite is sometimes lifting directly from the artboard (at least, it seems to us).
If its a colour correction issue, I won't be much help as I don't know anything about that part of the API. Even the rasterize API is -- while familliar -- not something I'm well versed in. I know our stuff works, but we're not interested in details like overprint; we just use it for previews and such so its never been an issue.

I can't seem to get rid of OR use Adobe Reader after I let it into Safari 7.  How do I get to the point where Reader is not my preferred anything, but can still be used if Preview won't open something?

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
              Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
              Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Pixelated images and overprint preview

I have a few images already inserted in a document which are all in CMYK at 300 dpi. When I zoomed in on them, they appeared just like they did in photoshop, nice and clear.
Last night, I started having trouble with the images appearing pixelated when I add them in. I couldn't find any differences in my workflow in bringing them in, which is the strange part. They are all 300dpi. When I placed some images last night, they appeared pixelated when I zoomed in. Also if I chose Place and just clicked one time, they would appear huge, more than the size they were intended to be, which makes me worry the document may not be setup right, but I cannot find anywhere to adjust the dpi of the document. I have it set for Print, 6x9 size but I dont see where you would modify the dpi for the print setting.
I made a flattened psd image which shows up in InDesign's info window as 300 dpi/cmyk but when I add it, it tried to make the image huge. So I used a different method and scaled the image into the area I wanted it and it still looked very pixelated when I zoomed in.
I looked around and turned on the setting overprint preview and the image cleared up. I am about to be placing a lot of images in this document to finish the book so I am trying to get a better idea of what is going on first and make changes to my document if needed. My question is - If the image doesn't display well when overprint preview is off, do I need to worry if it looks good when its turned on?
Pic 1, overprint preview on. Pic 2, overprint preview off.

Yes I understand this. I was just worried because strangely, other images I had placed before I did this one were not behaving in the same way. I had scaled them down, which is the only difference I could find. I was just very concerned thats all. I know it may have been a simple question but I am finishing a huge project and just about to drop a lot of work on prepping the photos for my book, so I wanted to double check the process very carefully to make sure I wasn't about to repeat a mistake somewhere 100x...

  • Overprint preview spot colors

    Hey All,
one of my collegues brought something to my attention and we are wondering why Illustrator does it. Here is the situation.
We create two layers. Layer one contains some objects filled with process colors.
The second layer contains an object filled with a spot color and the layer is set to non-printing.
When you open the separations panel and turn on overprint preview it seems that the spot color is converted (temporarily) to process. When you turn of the spot plate the object still show and starts to disappear when you turn of the process plates.
The spot object does however disappear when it's plate is hidden once it's layer is set to printing.
    Why does Illustrator do this?
We expect the spot object to disappear when the plate is turned off in any situation.

You are right experiencing the same here, and agree with you that the spot should not show in cmyk when the layer is set to not print.
Turn off show (or the visibility eyeball) for the spot layer if this bothers you.
Looks like a bug, I believe have originally seen many versions ago, and never been resolved cause not many people asked to get this fixed.

  • Overprint Preview and Workspace are set to the same, but look different

I'm working for something to be viewed on a screen, so I work in the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 (Edit > Color Setting > Working Spaces - RGB: sRGB IEC61966-2.1 ). I have set the Overprint Preview to the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 as well (View > Proof Setup > Device to simulate : sRGB IEC61966-2.1). But when I tick Overprint Preview the colors look completly different. Why?
    Thanks, Andi

Maybe you are right and it doesn't make much sense to use the Overprint Preview in this case. I think what happens is, when you tick Overprint Preview, ID converts from your actual RGB-Color Space to a set CMYK-Color Space and back to the old RGB-Color Space (if set to the same one). On it's way the colors change through it's conversion from RGB to CMYK and back to RGB. That could explain it.
    Thanks a million, Andi

    Ohhh!
All you have to do is to put your iPhone into DFU Mode
Just simply connect your iPhone to iTunes, hold the power button + home button for 10 seconds, later by holding the home screen button continuously (Without leaving it) until it appears to be in recovery mode in iTunes.
You now hit the restore button in iTunes. It will download the latest version of iTunes, which might take a while.
After that, it will install the iOS (51.1) which might take 7-10 min. And you're good to go!
If you're not able to put the iPhone in DFU here are the video instructions : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofpinyGlQ8I
    This should solve your problem!
