Overriding automatic organization of iTunes music in Finder -- help please

Hello. I'm trying to organize the music in my iTunes library in the Finder (in the folder at .../[user]/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music). However, when I drag music into the library in the iTunes application, which makes it appear in that folder in the Finder, it automatically organizes itself in its own way. For example, I have a bunch of music backed up on an external hard drive. The song I'll use as an example here is "Layla" from the album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" by "Derek & the Dominos" -- it is a .m4a file that was downloaded from iTunes. The problem is that, on my external drive, the album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" is not under the artist "Derek & the Dominos"; it's under "Compilations". So, when I drag the song "Layla" from that album from my external hard drive to my iTunes Library, the artist name that appears in the Finder is "Compilations", but I want it to be under "Derek & the Dominos" -- how can I fix this? Obviously, I can simply rename the folder within the Finder from "Compilations" to "Derek & the Dominos", but every time I drag it back to the iTunes library it reverts back to its original artist name, "Compilations". It's like the file has information stored with it somewhere that tells it to do this. Is there anyway I can change this and override iTunes?
Basically, is there any way that I can make it so that when I drag the file "Layla.m4a" from my external drive to my iTunes Library, it appears in the finder in the artist directory that I want it to ("Derek & the Dominos") instead of "Compilations"?
I will greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer with this. Thanks!

In additon to the previous comment on *Part of a compliation* setting, if this is unset then files will follow the *Album Artist* over the Artist if both are set but have different values. This often matters when there are guest/featured artists or if, for example, you wanted to organise the Derek & The Dominos tracks with other stuff by Eric Clapton.

In VIEWING (to print) my iTunes music (in finder), how can i view subfolders without clicking on the  triangle of each main folder?
I am trying to print a list of all my music. For example, main folder is BEATLES.  Subfolders are Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road, etc...
and I want to view and print all the subfolders. This is a recovery project after my hard drive failed. I know this is truly a "finder" question and will double post there.
    Thanks.

Should be able to go into your sound preferences and choose your output device, you can also try downloading Airfoil and try that, it's a pretty cool app.

I tend to make my playlists right on my ipod. This did not happen for the last 2 years. Just started recently. Did get a new computer recently.

That is because you got a new computer. You can only sync all media from one syncing computer. You can sync from any computer to iPod using the manual method but that does not sync from iPod to computer.
To make this your syncing computer:

Delete the .ipsw file on the computer.
Put the device in DFU mode.
Restore as new, once the restore completes, then try restoring from backup.

  • I Lost All Of My Itunes Music. Need Help! Quick!!

    Hi,
I recently lost all of my itunes music, from a Hard Drive failure, meaning i had to reinstall windows, losing all of my files on my computer. But also losing all of my music which i paid for on itunes, Is there anyway to get it back?!
    PLEASE!

If you didn't make a back-up of your music/movie purchases to restore from (as you are advised to do) then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Products may only be downloaded once; after being downloaded, they cannot be replaced if lost for any reason. Once a Product is purchased or rented (as applicable) and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage" iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
If you have an iPod that still has any of your purchases on it you'll find details in this article on how to transfer them to the computer: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
Purchased applications can be downloaded over again, see this article for details: How to redownload purchased applications from the App Store
Failing this, you could try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on this link it'll take you to the support/contact page: Customer Service - iTunes Store Support

My itunes on my PC keeps telling me I need to update my phone to the latest 10.6.3 and according to my phone I have no new updates. This is preventing me from downloading music from my itunes to my iphone. Please help!

It is not telling you to update your iphone, it is telling you that you need to update itunes on your computer.

  • 'Itunes music player' file- HELP ME

I recently downloaded (legally- so it should work) an album online and it saved into my downloads on my computer as an itunes music player file. i cannot get it to open or play on my itunes, anyone know how i can do this? thanks.

A .zip file is a compressed archive and needs to be uncompressed with an unzip utility such as WinZip. That should give you the actual track files which you can drag into iTunes.
    Regards.

  • Transferring iTunes Music...help?!

Hi and I hope I am in the right forum.
I was wondering if anyone could shed any light as to why when I back up my iTunes library to an external hard drive (2914 albums) and then import the iTunes music folder onto my mac pro, it only seems to load 2337 of the albums? There is enough room on the mac pro HD so I just cant work out why it isnt transferring all of the music. I am simply importing the "iTunes Music" folder.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
    Many thanks in advance.

I only see the transfer from my IPad to my computer.  I need to put the apps & music back on to my 2nd IPad.  Just having brain fade on how to do this.  Help!  Thx.

  • Itunes 9?? HELP PLEASE!!!

I recently downloaded the new itunes, and since then I cannot get any new songs from cd's onto my ipod. Is anyone else having this problem?? What should i do??

I'm not using iTunes 9, so my suggestions may not be entirely accurate. But here are a few things you could check:
    – Under Preferences > Advanced tab: Make sure "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library" is checked.
    – Add selected songs to a playlist
    – When your iPod is plugged in, select your iPod in the menu in the left hand column, and under the music tab, make sure the playlist is selected for your iPod to automatically update
    – Make sure your iPod isn't being "manually managed" (uncheck that if it's checked)
The problem cannot be that deep, iTunes and iPods were built for each other.

  • My stupid iphone turned off sundenly and now is saying i have to connect to itunes and it wont connect to itunes i need ur HELP please please please!!!!  whoever helps me u r an amazing person!!!!!

help please my iphone 4 turned off sundenly and now is not working its says to connect to itunes but when i get to itunes it shuts offf or doesnt work!!! i am depley need help!!! if anybody can help that wuold be amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP

The problem is your friend's music does not belong to you.  It is owned by your friend.
I'm afraid you cannot do what you are trying to do.  Restoring the iPhone is what you would have to do.
In the future, put your music on the computer and transfer it to the iPhone, not the other way.

  • Can't finish Syncing my music  !! help Please

When I sync my music iTunes cancels the operation, the songs are copied but most of them are grey and I can't play them HELP PLEASE !!!!

SInce you already did it, make sure you have nothing but the keyboard/mouse dongle plugged in and do NOT connect to the internet via wired or wireless and redo a full System Recovery, that should resolve this since something died midway in the last recovery.
