Overseas sim and unlocked iPhone 4s

I have an unlocked iPhone 4s and i plan to go overseas i want to get a sim card over there but will i have to activate through iTunes like i did when i first got the phone? or is it just insert and use?
thanks in advance

TFA, sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm in a similar situation - my dad wants to buy an unlocked iPhone 4s which he will use primarily with a UK sim, however he's going to Thailand for 4 months over the winter and will want to put a Thai sim in for this period, and then when he gets back to England, put his UK sim back in.
Did you find that the overseas sim worked straight away after plugging it in (or did you need to sync it), and was this the same when you put your home sim back in?
I'd like to avoid a situation where he has to sync with itunes when he's away (or back home at the airport when he reintroduces his UK sim), as he's not that technically minded.
Thank you.

  • Straight Talk and Unlocked iPhone 5

I recently purchased an Unlocked iPhone 5, thinking I would use it with StraightTalk.  Now that I have done some research, however, it seems that might not be possible.  Can I use an unlocked iPhone 5 with StraightTalk?  Or will I have to return it, order it from Walmart, and go that route?  Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

"So much for no contract phone"
What you need to remember is that a no contract phone does not mean the same as unlocked.  No contact means that you can buy the phone without a contract, but the phone will lock to the carrier of the first sim card that you insert into the phone or the first contract that you set up.  No contact is not the same as unlocked, where you can change sim card as much as you want and the phone will not lock to any of them.

  • HT201328 Can I buy and unlocked iPhone 5?

I have searched the Apple site for the buy an unlocked iPhone like that was there before the 5 was released and it is not there anymore. I want to buy my iPhone 5 unlocked so I can go prepaid so I am not over paying for a contract. I am in the military and I was able to get a iPhone 4s unlocked in the middle east in Bahrain, now that the 5 has come out I am going to be going back to the U.S. before they get them. I love having an unlocked iPhone but I want the 5 and all of the U.S. carriers want you to buy it locked with a two year contract then they will unlock it. That ***** because I would rather just pay full price and save the money I would waste on a two year plan. I feel like I am being contolled by the U.S. carriers, because they are forcing us to get a plan.

You'll have to wait for it to become available unlocked in the US. If history is an indicator, it will probably be announced anywhere from a few weeks to a month from now. Carrier demand has to be met first.
AT&T has a policy of unlocking iPhones for service members being deployed now, so it may not be as big a concern to you as it would have been previously to purchase a locked phone.

Since Apple deems the practice of jail breaking and unlocking illegals, you won't get any help for it on these forums

  • Putting Local SIM into unlocked iPhone 4S

    Hi Guys
My friend is going over to Turkey for a few weeks and would like to use a local sim card for making calls/data.
His 4S is unlocked and was wondering if its just as simple as swapping sim cards over and it works?
He was told he would have to connect his iPhone to iTunes and re-register it?
    Thanks.

Hobbs's link doesn't apply to your question, so you can ignore it.
If the phone is officially unlocked, you can swap sims to your heart's content, no connection to iTunes required. Simply power the phone off, swap sims, then power the phone back on.
Here's a list of supported iPhone carriers. If your friend uses a sim from a supported carrier, there shouldn't be any issues:

  • Invalid Sim on unlocked iPhone 5

    Hi
I bought a factory unlocked 16GB iPhone 5 from USA. When I insert Airtel (india) nano sim, it says Sim not valid.
I checked with an apple store, they say it's locked to AT&T. But it was supposed to be an unlocked phone (649$ + taxes).
Though before the activation, an update came - 6.0.2. I did that. Does that remove the unlocking from the factory unlocked phone ?

That's how the receipt looks. Doesnt say unlocked anywhere

  • I bought sim-free unlocked iPhone 5s

I bought iPhone 5s with no contact and free-sim.
The back of iPhone is labeled Model A1533.
However, in the Xcode, "iPhone 5s (Model A1453)" is appeared.
    What's the problem with that?

My Xcode version is 5.0.2 (5A3005).
I think Xcode does not have any problems.
Do you know how to contact apple technician through email?
This case is a kind of unique case, I guess.

I don't know why you're posting this on Apple's boards.  While Apple manufacturers iPhones, CARRIERS lock them.  Conversely, only CARRIERS can unlock them.
If you want your phone unlocked, contact the CARRIER.  This has nothing to do with Apple.

  • Erase and sync unlocked iphone

If I erase and sync my unlocked and jailbroken iphone in iTunes, will the phone remain jailbroken and unlocked or will I have undone that?

Well if that's what you think but I'm telling you from first hand experience I had a jailbroken and unlocked iPhone 3G in the UK. When the official unlock became available I used the same laptop as I always had to do an uprade of the FW (because I was about 2 updates behind as I couldn't do them due to losing the JB and unlock), it update, it un-jailbroke and the official lock went back on. Then I received the confirmation of the official unlock and I used the same computer again to unlock it via the Apple servers.
Also, how many people come on here perplexed that they've done a FW update and thier 'official' unlock has gone. Because it is jailbroken and unlocked and the update has re locked it and un-jailboke it.

  • Will SIM Card from iPhone 4s work in iPhone 6

Will a iPhone 4S SIM Card work iniPhone 6? Both phones are Verizon.

The iPhone 4s uses a Micro SIM and the iPhone 6 uses a Nano SIM.  The Nano SIM is smaller and thinner, so you should get a new SIM, but some customers have been able to trim their Micro SIM down and gotten it to work in the newer iPhones.  It is a snug fit since it is also thicker, so I would suggest getting a new SIM if you can.

  • When will unlocked iphone 5s ship

So i ordered and unlocked iphone 5s exactly on 10/2/13 and i still have not received an email or text saying when my iphone will be shipped and it said 7-10 days.
Does anyone else have the same concern?

Untill you receive notification, no one here could answer that. We are users like you, not Apple.

  • "Unable to load network list" on new sim card overseas on unlocked iphone 4

I recently bought an Iphone4 (unlocked) from australia. While traveling overseas I inserted a new sim and got the message "unable to load network list", and could not activate my new sim card. Could not find the answer on the discussion board here but got in touch with my provider back in oz who helped me.
Solution: You need your laptop with Itunes on it. Turn the phone off, then connect to your laptop with Itunes already running and then turn the phone on. When you click on your phone icon in Itunes it will say "Congratulation, your iphone is unlocked". You can then eject your phone and your new sim is activated.
    Hope this helps

Sorry not sure why your new sim card isn't supported...not sure if it helps but I had my laptop connected to wifi at the time also, but I don't think it should matter. Its worth a try connecting to internet with ITunes on, connect your phone and then turn it on and see what happens.

  • Hi, i am going to buy and iPhone 5 in france but it says its an unlocked iphone so i guess ir i take it to Ecuador (my country) the iPhone is gonna work with a sim card form Ecuador right¿

Hi, i am going to buy and iPhone 5 in france but it says its an unlocked iphone so i guess if i take it to Ecuador (my country) the iPhone is gonna work with a sim card from Ecuador right¿

If the receipt says "unlocked" (and not "SIM free") then it will work anywhere in the world that there is a GSM network. However, if it ever needs repair you will have to take it back to France.
