Oversubscripted Bandwidth Points on 7206VXR
Hi,
I just want to ask about bandwidth points on cisco 7206VXR with NPE-G1.
What will happen if bandwidth points oversubscripted on one of the PCI bus?
This is the sample:
===========
PCI bus mb1 (Slots 1, 3 and 5) has a capacity of 600 bandwidth points.
Current configuration on bus mb1 has a total of 0 bandwidth points.
This configuration is within the PCI bus capacity and is supported.
PCI bus mb2 (Slots 2, 4 and 6) has a capacity of 600 bandwidth points.
Current configuration on bus mb2 has a total of 640 bandwidth points.
The set of PA-2FE, PA-POS-2OC3, and I/O-2FE qualify for "half bandwidth points" consideration, when full bandwidth point counting results in oversubscription, under the condition that only one of the two ports is used. With this adjustment, current configuration on bus mb2 has a total of 340 bandwidth points.
This configuration is within the PCI bus capacity and is supported under the above condition.
==========
What happen when 2 ports of PA-POS-2OC3 activated?
Thx
Iwan
72xx PAs are hot-swappable. What we've done in similar situations is to schedule a maintenance window, copy the configuration to a text editor and search/replace the affected interface numbers, add a "no shutdown" on the config to the physical interface to which the card is going.
Console in. At the scheduled hour yank, shove, paste the config. Your customers on the affected card should be back up in less than two minutes.
Not really relevant to this specific issue but it is generally a good idea to have a specific maintenance window at specified off hours for singly-homed customers (and even multiply-homed just in case). 2:00 AM Sunday morning local time as an example. Situations like the above, upgrading IOS for security fixes or features, etc. will always come up from time to time. If it's expected it usually isn't a big deal and they often appreciate the attention to keeping your network up to date.
Back to your original question, things will still work in an oversubscribed state unless you're pushing near full wire speed in which case you'll start to get packet loss. If you need to open a TAC case or get support you'll be told not to do it, and perhaps to fix the issue before getting further support.
This document:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps341/products_tech_note09186a00800c814a.shtml
says "You can use a 7200 series router with a PA configuration that exceeds the guidelines that the Cisco 7200 Series Port Adapter Installation Requirements provide. However, in order to prevent the occurrence of anomalies while the router is in use, restrict the type of PA that is installed in the router in accordance with the guidelines. Additionally, in order to have Cisco Technical Support troubleshoot these anomalies, your PA configuration must be within the guidelines."
which may give you the ammunition you need.

Bandwidth point on Cisco 7206VXR (NPE-G2)
After greeting...
Current configuration on bus mb2 has a total of 800 bandwidth points.
is there any effect on router when bandwidth points exceeded it's point like i marked above???if there is please point it to me...Hello Sami,
Trust you are doing great.
When installing cards into a 7200, there are clear guidelines as to the order in which slots should be used, in order to maximize the available backplane bandwidth. The bandwidth is divided between two pci buses that are used to connect left and right hand cards. The available bandwidth is split between the left and right slots on the chassis. Cisco uses a system of bandwidth points, whereby the different types of interface cards have a bandwidth points value. For instance a PA-A3-OC3 card has a value of 300 points. On a 7206VXR router, the total bandwidth points for the either the left or right-hand side slots must not total more than 600 points. The bandwidth points should be evenly distributed between the left and right slots
Now from the logs which you have shared, it seems that you have installed Port Adapters on left half whose Bandwidth point sum is exceeding the 600 Bandwidth Point limit for the left side.
Effect of this: The effect would be that the Port Adapters you have used in Left side may be working in "Half Bandwidth Point".
This would allow to use only one interface out of two in the Port Adapters.
When there is any oversubscription, below message is also displayed in "show version"
The set of PA-2FE, PA-POS-2OC3, and I/O-2FE qualify for "half
bandwidth points" consideration, when full bandwidth point counting
results in oversubscription, under the condition that only one of the
two ports is used. With this adjustment, current configuration on bus
mb1 has a total of 600 bandwidth points
Please let me know if there is any concerns about these.

Mohit

Bandwidth Point value for the Escon Adapter Card PA-4C-E
In the document "Cisco 7200 Series Port Adapter Hardware Configuration Guidelines" I didn't find the Bandwidth value for the PA-4C-E ?
The only value mentionned on that document is for the Adapter PA-1C-E. Which is 100 for this adapter.
Can somebody tel me if the Bandwidth value is equal for both adapters.
Thanks a lot........Regards/MichelHi Michael,
I'm looking at the online version of the document you refer to, http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/core/7206/port_adp/3471pac6.htm
, which only mentions the PA-1C-E. First, yes, the value is the same for the newer adapter, the PA-4C-E. Second, I'll start the process of getting the documentation updated. Thanks for pointing out the problem.

Thanks in advance,
AndrasIt looks like the problem is with the IOS causing a mem corruption. Which IOS are you running right now? Here are the results from the output interpreter. Hope this helps.

Note: Understanding the 'Fixed In Version' field - Sometimes the fixed-in version
specified may not be available for download from the IOS Upgrade Planner. This
is because, bug fixes are incorporated into software versions which have not been
regression tested. These builds are called interim images and will have a "."
in the build number found between the parenthesis, for example 12.3(8.1). The bug
fix will be in the next available image, and all later images. So if a bug is fixed
in 12.3(8.1), the bug fix is present in 12.3(9), 12.3(10), and so on.

I already mention the TurboACL feature statement. With ACLs, fewer are faster, and how they ordered (especially without TurboACL) impacts CPU. How you order you class-maps, within a policy, and how the match statements are ordered will also have some impact on the CPU load. If buffers are being allocated/deallocated, that too will impact CPU loading. I assume CEF is enabled, but for some traffic, flow caching might decrease CPU load.Remember a software based router, like the 7200s, are, more or less, a computer that takes your configuration and determines what's to be done with every packet it "sees". The more your configuration requires for per packet analysis, the more load for each packet. There are whitepapers addressing high CPU load caused by "process switching", but what you posted appears to be mostly all interrupt processing, which is "fast path", or optimal, packet forwarding. There's not much you can normally do to improve against that, other than insuring your configuration is as optimal as possible for your needs (again, things like sequencing/ordering of statements).
hi ,
thanks very very much for this nice information,
let me answer you :
you said that NPE G2 has finite capacity , but how to know this full capacity ???
i mean that my policy map is matching the traffic , but the matched traffic is not being enhancemend ??!!!
last about two weeks , the matched traffic of youtube was excellent and no interrupt durting the my rush hour.
i didnt change any thing, but my bw increased from 730 Mbps to 760Mbps ,
im un able to make sure that i need to chnage my platform to faster one.
agian
my cpu is 60 % without QOS
after QOS it increase to 80-85 %
agian ,
about NBAR
i want to tell you that i cant depend on NBAR , as an example , im matching the ips of videos of facebook , i cant depend on NBAR because it is https videos.
but in summary ,
my qos is matching well , but i have no real enhancement for my traffic.
did you face my issue before ???
i mean have you see like my problem ?
like my router platform with cpu over 80 % and 750Mbps , and matched qos without good result ??
note that i upgraded to iso 15 , but seems same issue !!!

7206 G1 boot issue: No interface specified for interface_command
I can't seem to find out what this command means? I am pasting a config into a new router, do I need to paste in a certain order?
It boots just fine after it decompresses again, but it leaves me with a very lengthy boot time.

QaesHi There,
Just want to share a tip on ow to filter your CPU utilisation on your Cisco router. I find alias commands handy and use them all the time. From the config mode, you can type as below.
R(config)#alias exec cpu sho process cpu sorted | exc 0.00%__0.00%__0.00%
This will create an alias called cpu, from priviledge mode, you can then type cpu and it will filter all process' that are not consuming the CPU, this is done with the help of exc [exclude]. This excludes all process' with 0% utilisation.
Below is my example on one of my routers.
Thanks,
Faraimd -

focus on bold line ,
did the router get the new iso without problems ????
wish to clarify
regardsYou are right, whenever Cisco device boots, the IOS files gets loaded on the DRAM.
But in this process, some temporary files are also generated which gets saved in the flash/Disk, that’s the only reason you got these error messages. It’s not recommended at all to have less space in the Flash than what is recommended on Cisco.com. I would say please remove some files from Disk and have minimum 256 MB flash otherwise your router may drop into rommon mode at the time of next reload.
Well, it’s good to upgrade the bootstarp image too. Currently you are running 15.X IOS code, I would say run 15.X bootstarp image on the box.
You may download bootstarp image for 7206VRX NPEG2 from the link below:-
http://software.cisco.com/download/release.html?mdfid=282188585&flowid=1380&softwareid=280805685&release=15.2.4S4&relind=AVAILABLE&rellifecycle=ED&reltype=latest
