Overview of Photo setup in PSE 8.

I'm new to Elements.  I do genealogy and have hundreds of family photos both on my PC's hard drive as well as on an external drive.  Basically, these photos are stored by family groups with sub-folders as children have grown and started their own families.  These files, however, are not completely organized in their absolute final form.  And now that I've purchased PSE 8,  I don't understand how they should be set up in Elements?  I've read about importing from files, cameras, scanners.  I've also read about tagging photos.  But I don't see the bigger picture of dealing with hundreds of photos.  Do I just import them little by little until they are all in the Organizer and then start tagging so I can easily find them or what!!!  And what if I find that my current organization should be altered someway.  How do I keep the folders in my external drive in the same arrangement as within the Organizer?

Most people would import and tag in batches, although there's no reason you couldn't do all of the imports at once, and all of the tagging thereafter. It really is your choice depending on how you like to work.
If you are going to use tagging (and captions, don't forget about captions), then my advice is to eventually (when your tagging is completed) use tagging and captions as your entire method of organization and searching. Tags, in my opinion, are much more powerful than folders. A photo can have as many tags as you would like it to have (plus a caption), but a photo can only be in a single folder. You would no longer need to worry about how things are arranged in folder — as in, your folder structure becomes storage locations and nothing more; you do your organizing and searching in PSE (not windows) with tags and captions.
You can furthermore do things with tagging that cannot easily be done with folders, for example, you could have a "cousins" tags that applies to all cousins, regardless of what family they are in. Similarly, you could have a "children" tag, or a an "aunt" tag, or a "birthday party" tag, or a Hanukah tag. None of these things are easy to do (if you can do them at all) using Folders.

  • Print photos edited in PSE 11 editor at Walmart, etc.

Is it the psd extention preventing me from being able to print photos edited in PSE 11 editor at the photo machine at Walmart?  Do I have to somehow save the photos as Jpeg and how do I do that?  I have already saved them after editing and they are in saved in Organizer.  Can you give me simple instructions?

Unless walmart also specifies that it can print tiff files, jpg is the way to go. Just select the files in the organizer, then file>export as new files, and choose the highest quality jpg.

  • Any ideas on how to uninstal the setup for PSE 9?

I wanted to load PSE9 onto my iMac4 Intel Core Duo, however I would need to update to 10.5 to complete the install. I am unable to do this upgrade right now and i want to completely remove all PSE files. It took a LONG time for the set up to load onto my desktop, and even though I did not do the complete install, im worried that the setup files are taking up space on my computer. How do i uninstall something that i have not yet installed!?! lol
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steph

Download AppCleaner and install then drag the app into AppCleaner.

  • Help scanning photos in Photoshop PSE with OS X Lion

I just purchased Photoshop PSE for my new Mac with OS X Lion operating system, thinking it would allow me to scan in photos......but I cannot figure out how to accomplish this. Some things I read on line suggested I needed a Twain plug in, but the App store has no such thing. I"m at a loss. And I just paid $80 for this Photoshop package which I apparently cannot use.
How do I get my HP Officejet 6310 All in One to send photos into Photoshop?

    No "show package contents."
I've clicked right, clicked left, clicked control right and control left on the application on the dashboard, with it wide open on my screen and within the applications window….to no avail.
I've been monkeying with this for 3 hours now. I think I need to go to sleep and start fresh in the morning. It's supremely frustrating because my father is dying, and I've been asked to scan in a bunch of photos before we leave to go to his bedside/funeral….so I'm under the gun time-wise and under the gun emotionally. I just need to get my scanner to put photos over to my computer, and I thought I'd be able to do that with the $80 Photoshop. Guess I should have researched it better before buying. I do appreciate your help, though. I'm very impressed Adobe would have someone monitoring the message boards….

  • Need help editing scanned images of old photo album pages PSE 9

Before I begin this project, I thought I'd get some advice from someone who has undertaken a similar project.  I have three photo albums from the 50's and 60's.  The albums were made by my mother who mounted the photos (mostly black and white but some color photos) on construction paper (of various colors) using the corner holders or glue.  She hand cut the construction paper so each page is not a perfect rectangle ( about 11" tall, 8.5" wide).  The pages were punched and put into a three-ring binder.
She added text to the edge of the photo and/or to the construction paper.  Each page contains one to 6 photos and text.  Each album has about 120 pages.  I want to keep the notes on the construction paper so I scanned each page into a TIF files, 400 dpi and stored the images in a separate folder for each volume.
I use (poorly) PSE 9.  I see it has a auto straighten/crop feature that can be used one photo at a time.  I tried the divide scanned images function and that did not fully separate all images on the page and also created an image for stray objects on the page such as an unused corner holder.  (I know those things have a better name but it escapes me now.)
I plan to create photo books for my siblings.  I am now thinking of cropping the image of each page (rather than each photo on the page) into a uniform size, adjusting levels, contrast and sharpness, saving this image to a JPEG file, and using these edited JPEG images to create the photo book.  Since each page was hand-cut, there will areas of white where one page was torn or cut smaller than another page.  Some pages will have blanks where old photos have been lost leaving behind only the corner things.  It won't be perfect but it will be an image of the album as it exists today.
    My questions are:
The pages are about 11 by 8.5.  Does anyone know a photo service that prints photo albums in a portrait layout in this size?  I  have been unable to find one; it looks like most online photo books are wider rather than taller.
Let's assume I use a company such as Shutterfly that offers a 12x12 format.  I assume it would be better to edit the images in PSE9 rather than any online software.  What should I do to keep the proportions in the current images true but make the image fit a 12x12 page, for example?
IS there any other editing software anyone can recommend that will speed this up, hopefully a software that would take multiple photos at one time, auto-straighten and auto crop to a set size?  And also auto contrast/level/sharp.  If I could use such auto features on these images and then go back and adjust the photos that did not play well with the auto features, that would save me time.
I appreciate anyone's input.  I dread doing this but we have one set of photos and 5 siblings so it has to be done.  Thanks!

    Hi,
Mentioning your issues one by one:
    1) PSE does not have any portrait Photobook available, so your thought was the best way to get the work done is by choosing the 12x12 - shutterfly one.
    2) PSe does a good job of editing the images. You can set your images of approx. 11x8  size to fit to the 12x12 page. Just choose a one photo page Layout for the page and then right click on the image to " Fit photo in the frame".
    3) If more edits are required for the image, you can easily go to Advanced mode and edit your photos, layouts, move the frames, images or add effects to the images.
    4) Photo book creation sure takes time. because, you want it to be the best. I am sure PSE would help you best here.
Go ahead and create you photobook. Inc ase you get stuck somewhere, you can always post here to get help!
    Cheers,
    Swarnima

  • How to add photo to BACK cover of photo book in PSE 12

I am trying to add a photo to a back cover in PSE12 photobook but cannot access the back cover page.  There are only templates for title page and regular pages.

The templates in PSE are for standard hard cover photo books which have no photos at all on the covers. The front cover photo is seen through a cutout in the cover itself, not printed on the cover.
If you know who is going to print this for you, I would check their site for their online template that will let you do it, rather than trying to create the book in PSE.

  • How do i disable automatic photo downloading in PSE 12?

I have been searching for a way to disable the automatic photo downloading in Photoshop Elements 12, but haven't found any way to do it. I don't want the service running at all unless I choose to launch it manually.
What is the correct way to disable this feature, but without uninstalling PSE?

Which operating system are you using?

  • Why am I getting sharper printouts from Windows Photo Viewer than PSE 7? This was not always the case. has something in my settings changed? I have tried all obvious solutions but no change. How can i get the best image print outs from PSE?

I prefer to print from PSE as this allows me to set  picture dimensions. Windows photo viewer does not give this flexibility. I am using the same PC, the same printer and the same print file, yet the outcome from each software option is significantly different. WPV is sharp and bright whereas PSE is softer. • Help with Adobe Photo Downloader in PSE 7?

I do not allow PSE 7 to "see" pictures all over my hard drives; I have ONE watched folder called "my picture collection", in which are stored all of my "final copy" pictures, and these are the only pictures in "my catalog".
Since I am using Photoshop Elements to edit, and tag pictures, etc, I would like to use it to get photos from my Camera....however...
I want to import pictures from my camera, or scanner, to a different folder then my "watched folder", to a folder called "my Pictures F drive". I do this because these may be photos I DO NOT want in "My Catalog", such as today, pictures of the insides of an engine.
I can tell Adobe Photo Downloader NOT to open the Organizer after importing the pictures to whatever folder I wish, and organizer does not open; BUT, I am informed that the next time I open PSE 7, the Organizer will display these pictures, which it does. this is what I do NOT want; I don't want Organizer importing these pictues, and including them in "My Catalog" just because I used Photo Downloader to get them from my camera to a completely unrelated folder; NOT my "watched Folder". Is there any way of stopping Organizer from importing ALL photos handled by Photo Downloader?? If I want photos in "My Catalog", I move them into the "Watched Folder", and THEN I want Organizer to find them, and open them up for tagging etc (which it does). I can't find any way of doing this in "Preferences", or options in Photo Downloader. (The alternative would be to use a different program to get the pictures from the Camera, or scanner). Thanks for any assistance!! Maybe I am not seeing something obvious??

I have an older version of Elements, and in that the downloader always runs in the background when it is enabled via preferences. I found this to be annoying and, therefore, disabled this feature.
    My workflow is:
I use a card reader to import pictures from camera card to an empty folder on the desktop
Next, I burn a CD before I do anything else. This is my "film" - can always go back to retrieve an accidentally deleted file.
Then, I delete the obviously poor pictures from the desktop folder - motion, unflattering pose, etc.
Finally, I manually import the "keepers" into organizer, tag them, etc.
You could adapt this scheme to import into the organizer only the pictures which meet the test for  what you call "my picture collection", i.e. those pictures which have been enhanced .
In the older version of Elements, the organizer allows one to make a collection. I believe that it called something else in PEv.7, but it is still there. The advantage of this is that you can assemble a group of photos for a particular purpose, which you do. It also allows you to define the order of the photos in the collection by dragging them into position. Suggest that you consult the help file re same.

  • Will LR3 automatically transfer keyword tags of photos created in PSE when importing the photos

    Hi eveeryone,
I am new to LR3. I would like to import all my photos into LR3 and all these photos have keyword tags that were done in PSE. Will LR3 automatically import the keyword tags too? If not, how would I do it?
    Much appreciate your feedback.

The answer is "NO", because importing is the WRONG thing to do here.
The proper procedure is to have LR3 upgrade your PSE catalog. In Lightroom, File->Upgrade PSE Catalog. All your tags will show up in Lightroom as keywords. Couldn't be simpler!

    Hi Jane
There are sometimes problems calling up the template from the media database. Why not design your own? It is possible to make a collage manually in Expert Mode and its quite easy.
Click File >> Open and select all of your photos
That will add them to the project bin
Then select File >> New >> Blank File
Select background color White (or whatever you prefer) and add your width and height for your final image (set resolution 72 for web usage or 240 to 300 for printing) then click OK
In the project bin click your first photo and drag it up into the main window on top of your new background.
Click on the move tool and click in the center of the photo and drag to arrange it where you want on the background - you can hold down the shift key to maintain original proportions whilst dragging the corner handles of the bounding box to get the size you want.
Do the same with the next photo (drag it up into the main window) and use the move tool to position it. Then continue with each image.
Finally Click Layer >>Flatten image and save as jpeg. (Save as PSD if you want to preserve the layers for editing again)
N.B. as you add images they get dropped in the center. So you need to use the move tool to drag them apart. Click in the middle of one and move it around, and then the others until you get them positioned as you want.
When you click again with the move tool a bounding box appears around the image and you can drag out the corner handles to re-size your photos. Hold down the shift key when dragging the corner handle and that will maintain the proportions of the original.
Finally click Layer >>Flatten Image and save your collage - you may then want to use the crop tool to cut away any surplus white canvas, and then re-save.

  • Saving photos edited in PSE 11

After I edit a photo in PSE 11 I want to save it back into Aperture. How can I do this?

Thanks, Barbara. I didn't express my issue very well. PSE 11 is my extenal editor for Aperture, and that part works very well. My issue is that when I go to "File>Save As" in PSE, the photo gets saved in a mysterious place instead of in Aperture. I can work around this issue by saving the photo to my desktop, but that's cumbersome, and I'd like not to have to do that. Any suggestions? BTW, Happy New Year.

  • How do I see the layers pallet and the photo bin in PSE 11?

How do I see the Layers Pallet in PSE 11? It is not showing up on the right side of my screen. I also cannot get to the Photo Bin at the bottom of the screen.

You must be in Expert Mode. Click the word Expert at the top of your screen, and then you will see the buttons to make them appear.
