Nokia OVI Maps - Free Navigation
Mobile navigation for everyone, the Ovi Maps takes you where you want to be and shows you what you want see, with navigable maps for over 70 countries worldwide. All this with only one click. And it's all free.
    - Free Drive navigation
    - Free Walk navigation
    - Free maps and map updates
    - Free Events guides
    - Free Lonely Planet guides
    - Free Michelin guides
You thought Garmin and TomTom were in trouble when Google announced its free Navigation service? Wait until investors hear Nokia's news.
Reuters is reporting that Nokia will offer free navigation on its smartphones. However, instead of just the US (the current Google limitation sans hacking), Nokia will be demonstrating its reach by offering free turn-by-turn directions in 74 countries and 46 languages - a move that should cover 20 million smartphones globally with Ovi Maps available in over 180 countries.
Update: The original San Francisco Chronicle report has been pulled but Google cache caught a bit more saying that Nokia's navigation service is "capable of operating completely offline" unlike Google Navigation which requires data connectivity.
Update 2: Nokia just made the download link live. Hey, where's the N97 and N900.
Update 3: And it's official. Starting today, Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation is free across the globe. Drivers receive turn-by-turn voice guidance including lane assistance, traffic information (in 10 countries including the US), and safety camera and speed warnings while pedestrians will be guided on shortcuts through parks and pedestrian-only zones in over 100 cities across the globe. It all works offline too, which should extend battery life and keep that navigation humming even while puttering about in data dead zones without racking up international roaming charges (take that, Google). From March 2010, all new Nokia GPS enabled smartphones will come installed with the new Ovi Maps application and pre-loaded with local country map data and walk and drive navigation with access to location-aware Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides at no extra cost. Additional premium guides like a weather service and events / movies are also included. Just 10 devices from Nokia's massive catalog are available today a list that includes the N97 Mini, 5800 XpressMusic, 5800 navigation edition, E52, E55, E72, 5230, 6710 navigator, 6730 classic and X6.

Helsinki - Nokia made a breakthrough by offering maps and GPS navigation service is completely free for users smartphone. Step the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer makes the GPS industry players stressed. Google is also subject to receive the effects.
"We are offering navigation for cars and pedestrians in 74 countries in 46 languages. Ovi Maps truly free," Jukka Husio said, director of marketing services Nokia in Helsinki, as quoted by the AFP detikINET on Friday (22/1/2010) . The new version's Ovi Maps can be downloaded at the Nokia website is, to provide full navigation features like voice guidance for driving, 180 state map, directions and content from leading partners such as Lonely Planet and Time Out. All are available without charge in the handset Nokia N97 mini, N97, 5800, E72, X6, E55, E52, 6730 Classic, 6710 Navigator and 5320.
Navigation industry players such as Tom Tom and Garmin affected by this initiative is estimated to Nokia's. And iSupply's prediction that the GPS market is likely to fall. Nokia also seemed to challenge Google is actively developing the navigation for free for Android handsets, such as the Motorola Droid.
For Nokia itself, of course, the move to improve its position in the global smartphone market. Some time later, Nokia is losing market share captured the iPhone and BlackBerry.
"I think Nokia's intention they can stop the decline in the smartphone market with that step. This service is useful and may attract enthusiasts because it become free. But I do not know if will be enough to stop the decline in market share of Nokia," said analyst Michael Schroeder of the FIM. (Fyk / Faw)

  • OVI Maps keeps wanting to download data after upda...

I have the Nokia 5230 which I bought in July. I had also installed the OVI suite on my PC, which I used to download the full map of Malaysia and Singapore. I could happily use the GPS function without having to download large amount of data through the phone, or allow it to go online if I want to search for location. In the case where I wanted to use it offline, zooming in or out at any level allows me to see the roads and place names clearly.
A few days back while using OVI Maps, a popup came up saying a new version is available. I promptly allowed the download, but installation failed saying there "was not enough memory".
I uninstalled apps from my phone, including "Nokia Maps". After clearing up apps and getting about  40MB free memory, was I able to install the new version of OVI maps. I promptly re-downloaded the Malaysian and Singapore Maps through Ovi SUite.
Now I notice OVI Maps now download large chunks of data through my data connection during GPS usage. If I disallow online use, my GPS shows  nothing but a blank "map". If I allow going online for the first time, and not the second time, when using GPS, the same blank appears if I zoom out or zoom in. It's as if the maps are not there, so data connection is required to download them. How can this be when I have already downloaded the Malaysian / Singaporean map to my phone through OVI suite? I have set on my phone and the OVI suite for the data to be saved to my microSD card.
Please help. This is driving me up the wall.

Here's what you can try to do.
    1. Back up your phone memory.
    2. Update the phone software.
    3. Download Ovi Maps in this link : http://maps.nokia.com/services-and-apps/ovi-maps/free-downloads#/nokia-5230/
    4. Remove the "qf" and "Cities" folder on your memory card.
    5. Install the Maps Application on the newly updated phone.
    6. Once the installation is successful, run the Maps on your phone but don't go online. This will re create the two folders that you deleted in the memory card.
    7. Open Settings of the maps application then click on maps. Make sure that it will use the maximum allowable size (90%)
    8. Download the Maps data again using Ovi Suite.
Every one can correct if I'm wrong. ^_^

  • OVI Maps has stopped working

I bought the E71 about a month ago and OVI maps worked fine until a few days ago. When I start Maps it finds my current location. I then search for a location and it gives me the option I require. I then select 'Drive to' which is where it goes wrong. It then hangs saying 'Waiting for GPS' Initially a screen popped up asking me to accept and 'drive and walk to' licence and give options to purchase an annual licence, etc. Now it doesn't even do this..
    Version 2
I'm in a good coverage area with strong signal.

It seems to me like you are still using V2 and you don't have a navigation license. Did you realise that an update with free navigation is actually available for the E71. Use the link below, select your phone, download and install. This should fix the fault as well.

Whats the real issue ? Do you want to regain Memory really or ONLY because OVI Maps cost lot of money (???) . Because with proper settings OVI Maps will be totally FREE anywhere in the world.. Refer this ..
Maps should be pre-installed and set to Offline mode. Use only Integrated GPS Positioning method... and there should not be any cost incurred...

  • How to use OVI map for free?

Is OVI map really free? I bought a 5800 XM last week. I don't have data plan. I have a problem with the map. I heard the navigation is free forever, this is main reason why Ibought it.
When I set a place and select "drive to", it always ask me: "Online connection required to enter the shop. Connect now?" when I select NO, it will not work. It can show where I am, but don't tell me how to go to my destination.
Could anyone tell me how to make it work?
    Thanks.

  • What free ovi maps? E51 Discrimination?

I've been using Nokia MAPS 2 with a navigation license. I recently updated it to v3 (ovi maps) along with all my maps using the Nokia PC suite. Now my license has expired. I've tried to update to the new free version 3 as advertised by Nokia but E51 isn't listed and I'm directed to the old Nokia maps version 2.0 by the ovi site. Nokia PC Suite gives an error when I try to use the updater. What is going on? Why can't I upgrade. Do I have to buy a new license for my old installed version with less features than the free version? Thanks for any input.

You can install the free version, you just have to pay for a license to use it
Oh, also, chances are they will release a free version after you pay for a license, so go ahead, buya license. They are non-refundable, and Nokia can't tell you who get's free maps as doing so would be "a bad business strategy".

  • Free ovi Maps problem

Once again Nokia has exceded themselves in the field of ridiculousness:
I cannot download ovi maps OTA via software update on my phone and I have looked on the nokia website but cannot find a download for my laptop so I can install via USB.
I have an n97 with the newest software... please help.
(On another note, does anyone know why my n97 doesn't respond to any button/screen presses from time to time after unlocking screen? Any fixes?)

Hi, only way to get maps update is to go to nokia maps on phone browser and download N97 mini version ( it works perfectly) but it will take up about 9 meg of space on C. New version will be with V2.1 update when it arrives.
    Good Luck

  • Ovi maps and Nokia Maps

I have recently downloaded the ovi maps update for free navigation on my 5800 however now I seem to have 2 programs in my installed apps menu, Ovi maps and Nokia maps. This is causing me some problems as my phones built in memory is now completely full and I am unable to do some things as I have ran out of on phone memory space. Which one is the main map software? And also can I uninstall one? If not then can it be installed on a MSD card and if yes how?

As far as I can determine Ovi maps is the mapping software (program) which installs to C (phone memory) and Nokia maps is the map data that you have loaded which I believe are installed to E (mass memory).
I can confirm that you do need both installed.
The problem as far as I can see is that the previous maps versions 3.01 is built into the current firmware (v20 for N97 - not sure for 5800) and installing maps 3.03 does not remove or overwrite the earlier version so you end up with both versions installed and thus the extra memory footprint.
This will remain a problem until a newer firmware is released which will hopefully have maps 3.03 (or later depending when next firmware is released) thus reducing the extra 9 megs or so used.
    Hope this answers your question

  • How to install OVI Map navigation for N95

Ok, getting very frustrated with this now.  I have given my dad my N95 to help him get around but just cant get the map navigation to work.  I downloaded the Nokia Map Loader (I had to go to a third party website as the Nokia links were all broken) and have the map/voices but when my dad tries to use the navigation it tells him he has to pay.
Obviously, I know that Nokia have now made these services free to complete with other company's devices, I'm just being stupid and not going to the right place to download them.  When i go to www.nokia.com/maps on the phone it doesnt do anything.  I've been trying for over a day now and the phone has almost made contact with the wall a few times - sorry to be a numpty, but how do you install the OVI map navigation stuff on the N95! :-)
    Danny
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    @Cowes67
Let's clear up any misunderstanding here, upon N95 there is no legititimate way of obtaining free voice navigation with version of Ovi Maps upon N95 as you would need to purchase a license!
You should run Ovi Maps application with a microSD inserted in N95 which will re-create necessary folder structure for Nokia Suite > Maps to recognise it.
Please note that standalone version of Nokia Maploader apart from version for Mac users ceased to be functional several years ago.
I still have N95 in use so post again if any further queries over this issue.

  • Still the same bugs?! (Ovi Maps, N8)

    Hi!
I'm using Ovi maps lately quite a lot but I have some problems with this software, especially with the usability. When searching the net for bugfixes/help I found an older bug report on Nokia BetaLabs: http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/ovi-maps-for-mobile-v3-06/bugreport/23781/top-10-bugs-in-ovi-maps-v-3... and my problems are still the same but Ovi Suite says that I have the latest version (v3.06, Map version 0.2.42.122 on N8-00)
    My problems are:
1.) When searching for an accurate address (Street name, No., ZIP, City name) there is no hit for offline navigation, Ovi maps needs an online search. If I leave the house number out the offline navigation finds the street - Why aren't there the house numbers stored for offline navigation? There is mostly no sense in only finding a street but not the accurate address. As long as I only use the navigation inland that isn't a big problem as I have internet connection included in my phone rate - but it's a problem abroad because of high roaming rates ...
2.) So I have always internet connection on Ovi maps - problem is that sometimes when the UMTS-connection is lost (e.g.. in tunnels) there is a pop-up if I want Ovi maps to connect to the internet. If I choose "Yes" there is some seconds later a new pop-up where I need to choose the connection - That's very annoying! I can't find a setting like "always allow Ovi maps to connect to the internet". There is only a setting if I only want offline navigation (which doesn't work, see 1.).
3.) If there is more than one result I can't figure out what is the difference between the results (except the distance) because the exact address isn't scrolling and the results are only like "Country, State, ...." - I don't see the differences because there is only "...".
4.) I can't scroll through the map once the navigation has started. There is only this mode where I can scroll threw the turns/junctions. Sometimes I like to see where the navigation takes me before I start driving, that is hardly possible without a 'free-map-scroll-mode'.
One last point is the search-process: It is more comfortable to have a step-by-step search for the destination like all major satnavs have (TomTom, Garmin, ...) and bigger on-screen-keyboard because with this tiny letters it is quite impossible to add/change the address while driving.

AUTxRemoteC wrote:Now to the points from my first post:
1.) I've downloaded the maps via Ovi Suite on my mobile. Internet connection is only used for the search, but not everytime, it's only some kB but abroad some kB could be very expensive ;-)
2.) Thanks for this hint but everything was/is configured right as you said. This is more or less a general problem of my phone, maybe it has also something to do with my provider. Not only Maps asks regularly for the connection to use, other applications like the AR-Apps Wikitude and LiveView (from BetaLabs) but also some games are doing the same.
    1. Maybe I misunderstand your question but I have no problem with searches right down to numbers in streets with the phone offline i.e the country, town, street, street number is found and the cursor sits over that exact address on the map. Perhaps it is a problem with your country's maps? In the countries I use the geo data is readily available right down to the individually surveyed plots of land in towns and cities (and hence to numbers in streets).
I often find it quicker to do a search for the country first if it is another country you are searching for the address in, then do the city, street number and name search.
    2. I suspect that you have not barred such connections somewhere in the set up of your phone generally or else for for some app, or perhaps, as you have games, etc loaded, one or more of them insists on "phoning home" as some do and as they have opened a connection Maps asks to use it.
That with Maps 3.08 on an N8 but I do not recall any problems on earlier versions either.

  • Problem Installing/Running Ovi Maps Plugin

    Hi everyone,
I seem to be having a small problem with Ovi Maps 3.0 which I'm hoping somoene can help with. Probably an obvious solution to my problem but I can't seem to get the Ovi Maps plugin to install/run.
When I try to install nothing happens. I make sure to select accept the terms of reference but when I click the (green) Install the Free Plugin nothing happens.
Would anyone have any ideas on why this is happening? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

You are using IE 8 ?
Same here... and there are messages about that somewhere in an OVI-forum....Plugin can not install on IE8.
There are workarrounds described.. one is to deinstall IE8 (so you will fall back to IE7), then install with IE7 and then reinstall IE8 again..... the other workarround is to modify registry and implement plugin manually.
I decided to wait until there is a fix..... i'm not sure what the plugin will give to me..... i am a little bit disappointed about how OVI maps work on PC compared with other products......
