OVI Suite Backup incomplete ?

Recently converted from PC Suite to OVi Suite, as 'forced' by the imminent obsoleteness of PC Suite. Made backups via OVI Suite in the last four weeks, ensuring "all boxes" ticked, just like I did for years in PC Suite.
After a firmware upgrade I realized that _not all user files_ are in the backups. I can reproduce this easily.  When I create a backup _six_ checkboxes are ticked, including "Documents" . Upon restore only _five_  checkboxes available, no "Documents" to be seen.
1) How can I avoid this problems in the future
2) Why is there not an option backup entire device ?
Looking forward to your replies,
Regards,
TS

Hi,
I used to install applications on my memory card than in phone memory and i used to take out memory card while updating the phone's firmware, so that i can avoid any loss of application while updating the phone's software.
May i knw in your case, have you installed the application on your phone memory(i guess you have stored on your phone memory only) still its better to get clarify so that it may be an eye opener for rest.

  • OVI Suite Backup and Firmware Update

    Hello,
So this might be a little long winded, but it's just what I've been through so I cant' really condense it down anymore.
So a few days ago now (almost a week) I received an SMS from Nokia telling me to update my phone firmware. I then hooked my phone up to my PC, and checked for software updates. I updated OVI Suite to the latest version, rebooted and then checked again. It found the update for my phone and asked if I wished to apply it. Naturally I said yes, it then told me I should backup my phone first, and then asked if I would like to do that now, which I said yes to, and chose to backup everything. It then downloaded the update, applied it, and then asked me to restore my phone, All of which appeared to work fine.
A quick look through my phone to check everything and it all appeared normal, My custom theme was there, my facebook app was there, my contacts/photos/music were there. Oh but wait, I was missing my Sudoku game. A little odd, yes, but no worries I got that from the OVI store, I'll just be able to re-download it, because that's why you make purchases from app stores instead of publishers directly.
No, apparently not. This game wasn't listed in my "My Stuff" tab in the OVI application. That's ok, I'll just download it from the SMS I was sent originally.
No. Not that either. The SMS link is no longer valid. So at a loss I decide to turn to technical support, I mean after all I have a technical issue I need support with.
I e-mail technical support Basically telling them above. Then then ask for a transaction ID, which I have no record of (not sure why not?). I then provide even more information, ask them to escalate, ect. End result is, I don't get my game back. They have no record of me downloading this in the past, and for some reason it isn't available to download anymore.
Frustrated, I e-mail the developer/publisher, explaining my situation. They respond promptly (within the hour), providing my with a link and SMS to download the application again, and apologise for Nokia's behaviour. Nice. I've now got my game back things are good again in my world.
So with that little story in mind, I raise a few questions. Why was this application not backed up/restored with my phone backup? This seems like a pretty serious bug, especially considering that technical support won't provide download links for games or applications unless you can provide them with information provided by Nokia in the first place ( :s very round about).
My situation is pretty small in the whole scheme of things I guess. But if it can happen to me I guess it can happen to others. So why Nokia can things like this happen? What would have happened if this wasn't a small game, but rather a largish application, with data, that cost lots of money? Sure I could have gone directly to the publisher then as well, but if the purchase was made through the OVI store, what record would they have of me? This centralised store is supposed to handle all of these problems (ie, Steam or Apple App Store). Also how can bugs like this get through the alpha/beta testing of the OVI Suite backup utility? This must surely be considered a critical part of the application.
Judging from my response from Nokia thus far, I'm not sure if I'm even expecting a response to this. I guess it should server as a warning to others if they think they can trust this software or even the technical support behind it to back them up in case of issues. My advise? Get a different brand phone.

    Hey,
I can feel hw much frustrated u r
I assume 4m ur post that Ovi Suite took too much time to backup ur phone data..  My question is are you backup-ing complete memory card data as well along with ur backup?  Whts the capacity/size data stored on ur memory card? Y i m asking this bcoz, if u wanna backup say 1GB  of file, u can how much time it may require, in ur case, i dont have idea what all r the contents u hav backup-ed? Say for ex, if u r backup-ing 8 GB (here i m assumng that u hav 8 gb memroy card with 5800, which is so in most of the cases) contents of memory card, obviously it wil take more time as its connected in pc suite mode only n not in Mass Storage/Data transfer mode.  So it wud b nice to knw, what all r d contents u r trying to backup using Nokia Ovi Suite and y its taking too much time to backup
Hope u hav some time to clarify...

  • Operating system change and backup of ovi suit fil...

When we change our system operating system(lets say Windows) ,Do w have any way to safely backup and restore our Ovi suit related PC data which we usually store/backup from the phone?

Firefox installs to three locations, the Program Files directory doesn't contain '''''your bookmarks''''', the bookmarks.html file in the Firefox program files are the default bookmarks that come with Firefox (all 6 or 7 of them) - '''your bookmarks''' are in your Profile folder.

  • Backup OVI Suite contents for Formating the Laptop...

I need to format my Laptop n so i need to take backup of alll my OVI Suite contents from my laptop so that later i can use the same files,
Would it be "C:\Users\xyz\AppData\Local\Nokia\Nokia Ovi Suite"
    or is it
    "C:\Users\xyz\AppData\Local\Nokia\Nokia Data Store\DataBase"
Also whats the difference between these 2 folder files as 1 says "MDataStore.db3" & other has sepearte folders like messages, contacts, photos etc.

I have to say that this is something that I have never done myself, so I'm not 100% sure that it will work. There are atleats two key files that you need. One is this MDataStore.db3 that you have already found. Other one is msg_dp.sqlite that is in ..Nokia\Nokia Ovi Suite\Messages\Database folder.
Maybe you should take both of those folders that you are proposing (all files from there), just to be sure that you don't miss anything.
As an extra safety you can export you messages from Messages File menu and Sync your contacts to your phone (you can also create vcf files from your contacts by dragging them to some folder, but that is laborious, since you have to do it one-by-one)

  • Ovi Suite truncated Outlook 2007 PST!!! please be ...

Today morning when I turned on my PC, Nokia PC Suite asked me to install a software update and I agreed to download I think updates always are a good thing. BUTTTTTTTTT........ After the update I sync Outlook calendar and tasks plus contacts and for my surprise now I open outlook and experience 2 BIG PROBLEMS. I have all my birthdays entries changed one day before the day it is really loaded in contact details. and worse of all all my task have been reaped off, I enter them and see them with typographic changed, all of them have lose the format and are incomplete the content is truncated! incomplete, unusable!
PST repair tool won't help, ovi suite had made permanent changes to the file even when I have selected that when conflict occurs, outlook data overcomes phone.
I'm completely dissapointed, tryed everything even uninstalling product of course and nothing give's me back my outlook and my whole life organizer indeed! I think nokia should test this kind of products better before destroying data like this !
    I'm angry, yes I'am!.
I will have to return to a saturday backup and lose all the huge data entered till now!
bad work boys, I will keep using pcsuite that worked well. And I will suggest to other people never, NEVER make an update from nokia anymore. not at least making a full computer backup wich is ridiculous! just to sync a few items from a mail program that has so much years in the market and is very well known.
I Hope other people may be more wise than me and check this forum before ruining his outlook datafile.

I experienced virtually the identical problem using OVI 2.0 to sync with MS Outlook Contacts as mikaelgreen.   I have over 1500 contacts in MS Outlook 2003, many with Note fields exceeding 300 characters.  After syncing with OVI 2.0, all the contacts with longer note fields had been truncated back to between 224 and 267 characters.
But worse, when OVI 2.0 sync'd back to the Outlook database, it updated all the note fields in my original Outlook Contacts database on my PC with the truncated note fields.  Really bad.
It is one thing for new software not to work perfectly ... that is understandable.  But for released, non-beta software to destroy data in another program ... that is simply irresponsible and incompetent on the part of the OVI 2.0 development team.  Fortunately I had backed up my Outlook database before installing OVI 2.0!  But several more trusting users may not have done that, and thus may have had years of data destroyed because the OVI 2.0 developers did not bother to test the syncing process properly.
Phone: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic RM 428 (firmware 31.2.101)
    Computer: Dell SX-270, 2GB RAM, Windows XP SP3, MS Outlook 2003 (11.8313.8221) SP3
I deleted OVI 2.0 and installed Nokia PC Suite 7.1.40.1, which seems to sync perfectly well ... no truncated note fields.
This is an important issue for Nokia if they hope to make a headway in the smartphone market in the USA (where they have virtually no presence). If users feel that they cannot trust Nokia/Symbian to be careful with their data (and honestly, after this experience, I don't think they can be trusted), they will not buy.  With this kind of "kindergarten" testing effort they demonstrated with OVI 2.0, Nokia/Symbian is rapidly building negative rather than positive "buzz".  For me (a mostly business-oriented user), before I found the alternated PC Suite 7 syncing solution, I was actively looking to abandon my newly purchased 5800 for something not Nokia ... e.g., go back to Blackberry, or try Android, WebOS, etc.  And frankly, I may still do so.
    Regards,
    Bruce

  • Nokia Ovi Suite has lost connection with your devi...

5 months has passed and many hours on the phone to Nokia. The phone has been completely reset /reboot by Nokia time and time again and still the phone gets this message when trying to update software..."Nokia Ovi Suite has lost connection with your device"....We were optimistic that the software upgrade would solve the other problems we are having with all the Nokia phones at work. They are all E52's

Having the same issue currently with an E72 software version is 054.005.266.02 and Ovi Suite 3.1.1.80
Actually I had connection lost all the time with all previous versions of Ovi Suite too... it has never been reliable.
Using original Nokia USB cable, connected securely. Tried different PCs, different USB ports, same issue.
Just now I'm trying software update and it looses connection during the backup process all the time... very disappointing. Screenshot attached if anybody is interested.

  • E5: Ovi Suite has lost connection with your device...

I am trying to update the software on my E5 using OVI suite but I keep getting an error during the install phase (after backup). The following error and instructions are displayed in the OVI suite window but makes no difference when I follow these instructions (just end up back with the same error).
"Nokia Ovi Suite has lost connection with your device. Follow these steps to help reconnect your device:
    1. Remove USB cable from your device.
    2. Restart the device (turn off and on again).
    3. Re-insert the USB cable.
    4. Click 'Ok' below to continue updating."
Current E5 software version is 042.007.
I am trying to update to E5 software v. 043.115
    Any ideas?

Yep having the same issue. Just got a replacement handset due to the random restarting issue, soon after setting up the new handset I get a message on phone saying software update is available. Both OVI suite and Nokia software updater say version 43.115 is available (about 200mb in size), I currently have the same version as you 42.007. It claims to do a lot of improvements to the handset. The update downloads fine but when it comes to installing I keep getting the same issue. Phone simply will not restart automatically and the update restarts then fails at the same point over and over. Had the same problem with my previous handset.
I spoke with my network provider to see if it was an issue with the handset needing firmware specific to them but they said no it is an issue with the firmware itself and has been happening to everyone since its release!!! They said I should not download it until Nokia has resolved the issues with it. But how do I know when that will happen as I cannot find anything put out by Nokia stating there is an issue or anywhere on web forums saying there is actually a problem.

Uninstall Ovi and re-download from Nokia web. Reinstalled Ovi Suite but that didn't work.
I then uninstalled all Ovi and all Nokia related software, cleaned Registry and reinstall Ovi Suite: Failed to fix.
Then I installed Nokia PC Suite 7.1.40.1 which worked just fine with 5800 XM (RM-356 V. 51.0.006). I had no problems making backups or to synchronize.

    How to solve this problem?

    LOL
I just tried Nokia Ovi Suite again to copy the full error report that it sends to Microsoft.... lo and behold it started to work again?????

Installed Nokia Software Updater and I reinstall the latest FW 51.0.006 to my phone.
Then I organized my content for a few minutes.
Shut down Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Software Updater.
    Started up Nokia Ovi Suite.
Connected my phone and clicked on PC-Suite on the options.
    It now works again????
Something happened when I installed PC Suite that enabled me to use my Nokia 5800 with Ovi Suite again.

  • Bluetooth no more working with latest OVI suite

Since I install latest OVI suite it seems my bluetooth stop working correctly and I cannot sync.
however the radio seels OK, since I can pair.
I've tried to unpai, repair, to clean.
sometimes it works but afer the first disconnection, it no more works.
my PC is XP family with Bluesoleil 2 (and CSR chip)
I could not test on my work PC with widdcomm since OVI crash at startup.
should I step back to PC suite, until OVI works, or will it be worse?
    Alain

I have also tested with an airoblue bluetooth key (kensington driver) that use
    WIDDCOMM drivers.
it was not working well with 4.x version of WIDDCOMM, unable to synchronize with OVI(however could backup!)
I have installed the latest 5.x WIDDCOMM of kensington and is does not work either, with the same symptoms as Bluesoleil 2.x, and WIDDCOMM4.x : it seems to work but synchronize is slow and break in the middle.
works well with microsoft generic driver and my cambridge silicon radio key.
note that is was working well with the 2 keys, and their Bluesolei and widdcomm drivers since years.

  • HELP! pc suite/ovi suite won't read sms on my 5800...

Hi all! I have a VERY BIG problem. I own a 5800, I have about 3000 sms on the memory card. I want to move them on my PC, so i can delete from my nokia. PROBLEM IS: neither pcsuite nor ovi suite (even 2.0) can access my sms. both software fail. here's what happens.
pc suite: i run nokia communication centre, then it starts checking messages on my cell. after few seconds, it says there are about 2500 messages, at this point i see the bargoing from 0 to 70% real fast, then when it reaches 100% it says there are only about 50 messages on my phone (basically, it only lists the MMS, totally ignores sms)
ovi suite: the first time i used it, i synced messages with my cell, and it only synced about 2200-2300 of them out of 3000. since then, every time i try to sync messages with it, it says that for some reason it cant' read the data from my phone OR that the usb connection doesn't work (i tried with bluetooth, also, and i get the same error, so its not the connection).
in other words... i can read the sms fine on my 5800, it says there are over 3000, but when i try to access them with a pc software, it doesn't work for some reason.
HERE'S WHAT I THINK MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED.  some time ago, using pc suite, i did a restore of a backup. during the restore, i got an error while it was restoring the sms. at that time, i didnt pay too much attention, since i noticed all the sms on my phone were ok, none was missing. but what I THINK happened is that since then the sms structure on my 5800 is screwed... and for some reason, my phone can read them fine, but pc softwares dont.
now my question is: WHAT TO DO? i dont want to lose all my sms... i NEED to copy them on my pc... then i can even format/reset my memory card, but i need to copy them first. any help? anything i could try? please help... thank you!

first of all, thank you for your reply!
no, very few of those 3000 sms are from operator/config messages and such... maybe 10 or 20...
i tried nokia pc photos some weeks ago... and it worked, infact i can still see the sms/photos saved on my pc from that day. if i try it now, tho, i get the same errors i get with pcsuite/ovi suite... sync fails and basically does nothing, doesnt update any new sms (last one appears to be of the end of april, which is the last time i had used nokia photo).
this seems to confirm my fear... for some reason, probably after that messed up restore i did, something in the sms structure on the memory card got messed, and now no software can read them properly, even the cell backup program. but for some reason, my nokia can read them fine, if i simply access the messages.
question now is... does nokia have a tool to fix cases like this? i find it ironic that my cell can see all the sms but none of the nokia programs can actually access them. thank you very much!

  • File manager missing in Ovi suite

I just bought E7-00 after my E90 and I was really surprised that file manager was missing in Ovi suite. This means I cannot transfer single files between PC and mobile phone. Difficult to use backup copies are not enough. Fortunately file manager still exists in old familiar PC suite, which works with E7-00 in spite of that Nokia says it is not meant for this device. I consider it stupid that I have to jump between two suites. It takes much time in vain. I wait that the next version of Ovi suite works better. Please, don't say that file manager is not needed!

    @thecat2
Could you please confirm what type of sms are not getting synced?
    1. Operator SMS/ MMS?
    2. sms from any particular numbers

  • Help Please - How do I get Ovi Suite to work prope...

After being warned NOT to download the Nokia software that came with my phone (ie Ovi Suite), I became desperate after a slight accident with said phone, rendered the screen virtually unreadable - so I thought I could use Ovi Suite to pull contacts and other required info off my 6710 and try to "upload" data to a loan phone and eventually to whatever new phone I end up with.
Unfortunately, my advisors' advice seems to have been correct and I've had nothing but trouble for hours since downloading the latest version of Ovi from the Nokia website.
It wont sync, or spends hours appearing to be trying without actually achieving anything.  I then tried to look for updates (thinking that may be the problem)... same deal... hours of cpu usage - but no results... I eventually, in all cases, have had to terminate the action and / or program to move on to other things that DO work (not within Ovi though!)....   I have since searched the Nokia site to find that there is no software update available for my phone and as far as I can see, I'm running most current version of Ovi (V 2.2.1.23).
Have I just wasted half a day and am I best off to just remove the software and cut my (time) losses or is there are reasonable fix or simple solution to the problem?

Connect the phone to PC using the USB Cable..(PC Suite Mode..)
    Open the OVI Suite..
Give some time to get your phone recognised ..(An Icon with the Phone model should be visible in Bottom - Left window of OVI Suite..
Goto Sync-->Sync Now and select the data you want to sync..
You may also goto Tools-->Backup and select the data you want to back up..
I am sorry if you have followed this already..

During update search on my N8, software found is 014.002.  Half way during installation of .022.014, the Nokia ovi suite gets disconnected from my N8. The message on screen is Device Recovery - Nokia las lost its connection with your device. Then suggests following steps: 1. Remove battery, charger, USB cable, from your device. 2. Reinstall the USB cable, then battery, & finally the charger. 3. Press device power button for 1sec. 4. Click retry to continue. I have tried everything but no success. I also have Nokia bubbles installed on my Nokia 8.

    LOL
I just tried Nokia Ovi Suite again to copy the full error report that it sends to Microsoft.... lo and behold it started to work again?????
    ======================================================
This I did before I tried
    ======================================================
Then I installed Nokia PC Suite 7.1.40.1 which worked just fine with 5800 XM (RM-356 V. 51.0.006). I had no problems making backups or to synchronize with Nokia PC Suite.
Made a complete backup on my phone.
