Ovi Suite disappoints against PC suite

I've been using PC suite with my 6730c and have been very happy with both phone (except for that @#$% light sensor) and PC suite.
Decided on the C5 on my latest upgrade (which is the exact the replacement of the 6730c as far as I can tell)
Disappointments:
I could not run the C5 on PC suite;
Could not back up the 6730 and restore to the C5 using PC suite - had to bluetooth my contacts to the C5.
C5 is only supported by Ovi
When I type an sms on Ovi and I add a recipient which is in my phone (down to having the same capitals and spaces), Ovi DOES NOT RECOGNISE MY CONTACTS.  I have to go to contacts, select the person to whom I want to send an SMS, click on the sms icon and then it is happy.  (Have not yet tried multiple contacts)
It just seems to me that PC suite was a well sorted application whereas Ovi is riddled with bugs.

Yes, they are. I was trying to say that Ovi does not have backwards compatibility to PC suite data. The fact that I backed up my contacts, calendar etc with PC suite was of no value whatsoever because Ovi did not offer any compatibility with PC suite data. With C5 and 6730 being such similar phones it really irks me that Nokia still manages to make it so problematic to migrate from one phone to another.
The C5 did wake up with the option of transferring data via bluetooth but having backed up my data with PC suite I did not see the need to follow that route - until I realised that PcSuite was of no use with the C5. Then BT was the only option - thankfully it worked.
This is an ongoing pattern with Nokia, so I expect that when I try to upgrade from the C5 to whatever comes next, most likely even Ovi will have been replaced by a new suite which most likely again will not be compatible with that new phone. Excellent loyalty strategy.

  • Nokia Ovi Suite has lost connection with your devi...

5 months has passed and many hours on the phone to Nokia. The phone has been completely reset /reboot by Nokia time and time again and still the phone gets this message when trying to update software..."Nokia Ovi Suite has lost connection with your device"....We were optimistic that the software upgrade would solve the other problems we are having with all the Nokia phones at work. They are all E52's

Having the same issue currently with an E72 software version is 054.005.266.02 and Ovi Suite 3.1.1.80
Actually I had connection lost all the time with all previous versions of Ovi Suite too... it has never been reliable.
Using original Nokia USB cable, connected securely. Tried different PCs, different USB ports, same issue.
Just now I'm trying software update and it looses connection during the backup process all the time... very disappointing. Screenshot attached if anybody is interested.

Tech News - July 23 Nokia chief talks about future and losses
NOKIA chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo has urged an end to speculation surrounding his future at the company.
The call came as the world's largest mobile phone maker said its second-quarter profit fell 40 per cent.
Nokia had warned investors last month to expect poor results.
The company has been hurt by its failure to compete effectively in the market for high-end smartphones against iPhone maker Apple and devices based on Google software.
That shortcoming may cost Mr Kallasvuo his job.

    Correct.
    I'm using 22.007
    Thanks for Your efforts here.
One more thing about the issue with ()
It might be phone related. SMS from Phone is also not working to those number. No "Sacking" needed from the Ovi Team... Sorry.
Regarding other issues: Glad You don't have those.
Specially the quick search not working from time to time. Looks like some people do, other don't. You should go ahead and check forums for E-series and read some more about them.
My main issue is the Contact related issues.
The "missing features" I believe You are missing as well...
Surely your search does not handle "Save As" name or include company in quick search (that's from the home screen)?
Lets say you want to call the Helpdesk on Nokia. In outlook this contact is entered with the fields Function/Title=Helpdesk, Company=Nokia. It is saved as "Helpdesk, Nokia" or "Nokia Helpdesk" etc as display name. I don't believe that regular business users 2010 still saves this as Firstname=Helpdesk and Lastname "Nokia" to comply with their phones quick search.
On my HTC when entering "Nok" or "Hel" this contact entry immediately would be displayed from standby mode. In E72 not.
Same regarding categories: Does Your E72 calendar really handle categories other then Nokia standard?
Here's some reading regarding Maps issues with voices.... I've today installed 3.04 Beta and the issue persists.
Really: I haven't got any Hocus-Pocus software on my E72. I'm using MfE for syncing contacts/calendar/tasks. Ovi Suite for syncing Notes. Ovi maps for GPS.
I've resetted a couple of times, both hard and soft resets. No change.
In my opinion I'm using my E72 as any other of my customers would do. Of course I'm not recommending this phone for the moment.
In fact chance of even buying a new Nokia is miles out of sight. To much important missing, to much important not working efficiently.
Lets hope a update addresses this.

  • Apparent problem with Ovi Suite and Win 7 64 bit

    Hi
Apologies if this has already been covered, but i have searched quite thoroughly and i haven't come across the specific problem i'm querying.
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, with PC Suite 7.1.51.0, which runs just fine.
I intend to upgrade to the superb N8 when my contract comes to an end in 6 months, so i'm just doing my homework.
Apparently, the N8 will only run on Ovi Suite, NOT PC Suite.
Now if anyone disputes this and can convince me that the N8 works perfectly fine with PC Suite, then read no further, please just respond!  (Bear in mind the OS i'm running though).
As nice as Ovi Suite is, i've managed just fine so far with PC Suite.
Otherwise, please let me explain the problem i am having:
I installed Ovi Suite 2.2.1.23.  When i run it, it shows the main screen, and you can just make out a small window appearing in the middle saying "Nokia OVI".
It is then that the program stops responding, eventually displaying the error message which reads:
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\...
This appication has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the appication's support team for more information.
Judging by the similar stories of Ovi crashing (not finding one where the program fails to open, though), i think it is related to the fact that i'm running Win 7 64 bit; but i could be wrong.
I have tried installing it in compatibility mode, then (failing that), running it in compatibility mode, all to no avail.
Is this a problem that Nokia know about?  If there is an intended fix within 6 months, then that'll be fine.
Otherwise, do any of you clever people know any work-arounds?
Any further questions you need to ask, please don't hesitate.
    Many thanks
    Steve

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Pinpointing the problem may be very difficult as Ovi-Suite appears to be extremely unpredictable.and getting Ovi-suit tu run an sync properly seems to be largely a matter of luck.
I have just set-up three brand new identical HP workstations for our Geo-Information Department.
All were set up from the same disk image with only Win 7 Pro Office 2010, then directly Ovi-Suite as our Geo-Information guys insisted on Nokia handsets against our advice.
On one, machine Ovi-Suite crashed on launch and was unable to run at all.
on the second, Sync to OL 2010 failed consistently.
ont the third, everything ran fine with an N97 but an N8 was not recognized
So i got curious and run tests on one machine: I installed the same disk image a total of six times (clean win7-64, clean Office 2010 3 times, Office 2003 three times)
    Office 2010
the first time i had the crash on launch, second time OL2010 sync fail, third time it ran ok.
    Office 2003
First time notes sync failed, second and third time all was ok.
So the issue is definitely with Ovi-Suite and it appears to be pure luck whether is runs or not and if it runs at all, whether it syncs or not.
Syncing OL 2010 seems to be much trouble prone than OL2003, 64bit appears to be much less stable than 32, onb win 7 it seems to have slightly fewer issues than on XP.
We have NO issues with any other sync software (Palm, BB, Fruit, S-E, Microsoft, even Nokia PC-Suite).
None of the software is run with admin privileges (as we just do not give admin rights to users). If software requires admin rights to be installed, it is done by Data Center employees.
I'm afraid one's best bet to get Ovi-Suite running is trial and error, or if  the handset supports it, use PC-Suite, which is what we do.
Ovi-suite users, according to our logs, generate over 70% of our smart phone related support calls, even though they are only 6% of our smart phone user base.
As a result, we currently have all Nokia handsets that do not work with PC-Suite and require Ovi-Suite blacklisted in our organization, meaning we won't support them in any way. Installation of any flavor of Ovi-Suite is prohibited on user PCs as long as it does not become more stable, reliable and less of a resource hog.
Ever seen a black lemon? They turn black when they rot. My N97 is black. 'nuff said

this is the answer to your issue....
the problem is not the Nokia PC Suite.... it is HP that is to blame for adding such slopy hardware that is built not to be usable by other external software.. i have a HP Probook 4530s and it uses the same but newer version, bluetooth hardware Realtek Motorola BC8 Bluetooth 3.0+HS Adapter that has to use motorola software...this motorola software is able to connect to my phone via bluetooth and acts like a built-in nokia pc suite / Windows bluetooth driver... not allowing the actual nokia pc suite access to the bluetooth hardware... in short nokia pc suite is Incompatibile with Ralink / Realtek Motorola BC4 / BC8 Bluetooth 3.0+HS Adapter... so if you have this problem ask HP to come up with new software that works on the motorola hardware that is compatible with nokia PC suite... this is the problem with products that have parts built by other companies.. (Incompatibility)
thats why i like Apple and nokia they dont out source other brands to make parts... but recently nokia ran to microsoft for the lumia windows cause there symbian software was loseing against ios and android..

  • Ovi suite does not find a new MP4 on my PC!

    Hi there,
Unfortunately, after upgrading from 3.0 to 3.1 version of Ovi Suite I found that my newly added video files, mostly an MP4, can't be shown by the software. Also, much before this, I have to admit, some MP3 files are not been displayed in my gallery in the Ovi suite and I used to blame on the files, or even my PC. It did happen earlier 3.0 and still is on. I do not know what to think now, maybe some of you can explain what is going wrong!
Please, share your ideas. I would be glad to read some!
    Thx in advance.

  • Bravo! Ovi Suite 3.0.0.284 yet to deal with NTLM a...

Finally Nokia managed to map the NTLM authentication issues once again with their latest release of OVI suite!!
Suite once again fails to pass the credentials to firewall servers like Microsoft ISA while trying to ovi account. Parody factor is, majority of the suite segments like Maps, software update, sync seamlessly manage to establish connections to respective servers (ie, passess the log in credentials to the firewall) while the sign in segment miserably fail to forward the same credentials to the firewalls.
The betalab website, another **bleep**, claims they already addressed this issue from the early stages of beta testing. This is utter irresponsible way of assessing an issue which is ON from ages, reminds me the early days of Google chrome browser.
Hey Nokia, why don't you consult one of the developers from chrome browser team and LEARN how to pass NTLM authentication to firewalls? Well just a suggestion.
However if somebody is looking for a workaround method, follow this:
Create a domain name set "Nokia Servers" add *.nokia.com, *.ovi.com
Create a specific rule, and allow http, https towards this domain name set for all users

When I heard that Nokia were teaming up with Microsoft I thought that it would be a retrograde step. However, after loosing literally hours of my life that I will never get back _ I can see that maybe it is a good idea that Nokia pull in some expertise in writing software that may not be beautiful - MS software can rarely be accused of that! But MS software does at least work. I know I have one of the least prestigious nokia phones - 5230 - but I do expect to be able to use the software that nokia advertises and supplies. The continual problems endemic with their software are making me consider taking action against them under the trading standards legislation for making false representations.
I am more than grateful for the assistance proffered by members of this forum for all their assistance - however, none of the suggestions have worked & do think that it's time that the Nokia people pick up their Iphones and ring their new US mates and get a solution to this ASAP - apologies for the rant but I am furious at the waste of my time that this represents.

  • OVI SUITE 3.0.9.284 won't connect to internet

I had Nokia PC Suite before, no problem - now with my new N8 I have to use Ovi Suite. It's version 3.0.0.284. Although I have a Nokia Account, there is a standing functioning broadband connection to the internet, my Windows Firewall has Ovi Suite registered and my Avira Antivirus Premium is not protesting it cannot connect to the Nokia Account server. Also no downloads (like maps) or updates possible. I removed Certificates named GTE Cyber Trust... from my browsers, as advised by Nokia Hotline, but they are still there, as soon I restart the browser.
No problem with connecting my Phone to the Suite, no problems with Sync.
    Hay folks, any advice?

  • Windows 7 Calendar not recognized by Ovi suite

I have installed Ovi Suite 2.2.1.23 (is the latest) and installed Windows Calendar. However when going to Ovi -> Extra -> Opties -> Agenda en taken (I am using the Dutch version), it indicates that I have to install Windows Agenda or Microsoft Outlook. So it does not recognize Windows Calendar. How can I solve this problem?
I have seen previous messages about registry settings and compatability settings and tried them all without success...

There is a problem with Ovi with respect to office 2010 as well. Nokia is working with this issue, but is unknown (that is what I was told anyway) when a fix will come. Regarding my answer from a Nokia representative, I could not telle if this issue is with the N8 only, or with the Ovi against offfice 2010 in all.

  • Ovi suite slow as hell on windows 7

After a long time of not using Ovi suite, I downloaded yesterday the newest version from the Ovi suite.
When I ran the installer, it said that I'm installing the newest version, but after installing and running ovi suite, I get a message that a newer version was found(even though I was on 2.1.1.1) and that it wants to update to it. Fine, I said, updated. Version stayed 2.1.1.1.
After that, I connected my phone, a 5800. This was nightmare. Ovi started syncing, and got stuck on syncing photos. It took me about 20 to CANCEL the photos syncing.
Afterwards, I started backing up my phone. This went OK through out the entire process, except the ending - Ovi got stuck and had to be closed.
After closing Ovi, I noticed a process, Nokiamserver, that was eating my disk with reading. It kept reading and reading and reading. I eventually had to close it because I just could not work with that process reading so much from the disk.
The overall Ovi interface is very slow as well. Everything takes its time to load, everything moves slowly. I was quite disappointed with that.
Nokia - can you make a good syncing program that will really compete with iTunes? That will work good and fast?

    Hi All,
I'm new to this forum, and Nokia phones.
Bought a C5 yesterday (sell-out of old stock) because it said it did offer what I need:
Basically a USB-stick with a screen, offline GPS navigation and telephone. I don't need no mobile Internet access.
Well, what can I say: This device sucks, and massively so. User-unfriendly, ridiculously slow, and unnerving features like disappearing maps, etc. As close to a first grade ripp-off as it can get. It just nearly does what it is supposed to do; just enough so you can't actually sue Nokia for ripping you off. But then again, it does not guide me to where I want to drive to. It does not download and remember the maps i need, etc.
VERY disappointing. Look for mine on ebay - I need a hammer to hang a picture from time to time. I don't need to invent, engineer, manufacture and assemble the hammer in the first place each time I want to hang a picture!
Nokia: This is 2012. If you want to be here by 2013 you have a LOAD of basic homework to do! Detention for 12 months!

  • OVI Suite 2.1 Still not as good as PC Suite 7.1.40

    OVI Suite Improvements
    1) One person can have multiple Mobile Phones, for instance I have 1 E52, 1 N97 and 1 N82
    2) Contacts for all these phones are different, although some of them are common
    3) It would be preferable to have single OVI account and multiple Phone Profiles rather than having one OVI to one phone synchronization options
    4) Maps: There is no way i can view / synchronize my routes and placemarks
    5) Maps: There is no way i can know the Available Map Data version against my Phone's Map version (I am not talking about the map software but the version of maps data)
    6) Music: Cannot view / create playlists etc.
    7) Store and other online services: What is a meaning of Suite? Why do i have to open browser and then log on to OVI again to see my routes etc? Why do I have to go to store through phone only? Why Cant I download applications through the ovi suite itself?
PC Suite is way better than OVI Suite.
True for PC Suite, i have 3 different applicaitons (Map Loader, Software Updater, PC Suite) but still better than half baked OVI Suite.

I feel the pain buddy. I have similar opinions.

  • Ovi Suite 2.0 - Tasks and Calendar Sync doesn't wo...

Since updated Nokia Ovi Suite to the final version and tried to Sync my Tasks and Calendar, the new Ovi Suite made a mess in all my tasks entries. It doubled most of them an also tripled some. Tried to clear all my tasks from Outlook and rebuilt them, then cleared all the phone tasks as well and then re-synced again...and guess what a big mess again. What a pain...I had to rebuild all my tasks for the second time and stop using the OVI Suite for syncing.
Had no problems with the beta versions, all worked fine.
It is also a huge inconvenience that you can't see a log of what was synced after a sync session has finished (as you can with Nokia PC Suite) and also no Calendar in Ovi Suite (if I remember correctly it was a Calendar in the first beta version and you were able to see the differences between the phone and the system. Now this option is only available for Photos, Messages, Contacts, Music, Maps -  but not Calendar).
My conclusion is that the new Ovi Suite does looks nice, but the functionality is disappointing.

in PC suite, I can choose the different folder to sync with my Nokia device, I downloaded previous versions of Ovi Suite several times when it is released, but everytime I am disappointed, then I remove Ovi Suite and use the PC suite again.
Is this time still letting me disappointed or giving me supprising??
Nokia, it is shame on you, when you release a new suite, but remove all useful function in your program, I guess you have a very detailed specification for the PC Suite, but why not develope your new Ovi suite according to the latest PC suite specification??
I am not disappointed with the Ovi Suite itself, but disappointed your way of working really!!

  • Transferring content to N97 (Ovi Suite 1.1.374)

I have tried to transfer my music and some videos to my new N97. With mostly success (and a large fraction of disappointment) but I have a couple questions.
Is it normal for it to take soo many hours to transfer like 1300 songs (average of 5mb per song)?
When the music has been transferred, Where will they shop up in the E: Mass Memory? (when you connect your phone to the computer, and go to mass memory mode). What folder(s)?
Is there any log file of the transfer log at all? (Other than the transfer history within Ovi suite)
When I transferred most of my stuff, 24 files failed, from within Ovi suite I haven't found out how to see 'what' files failed so I can transfer them separately (which I know would work).
And, Why is it that Ovi will transfer files that are already on the phone?
Is there some easy way to transfer new files without having to select them from the ever growing list in the gallery?
    Please and thank you.

Why is there never any responses from Nokia about all the problems people have with their mp3 software.  The N97 is my 1st and last Nokia phone, specifically because the music software is so bad, and they never address the issues. Every issue I have with it I found in these support discussions, mostly unanswered.  The FM transmitter is cool, but really what good is it with out the music software?

I have been using Thunderbird on some computers during many years. It is true now that Thunderbird 7 can´t sync adressbook with Suite.
Anyhow, Nokia has been the only phone manufacturer that has been supporting Thunderbird as long as I can remember.
just to be fair, and further more, it is time to Thunderbird to improve import/export functions for content. It is a dister nowadays and it has been for long. I am only using Thunderbird nowadays as a email client on 2 computers. All emails are on servers, also contacts and calender.
You will not be better off concerning sync issues and backup system in an Android. Just check it up for yourself...
The whole business could do better and actually Microsoft Office 365 is far better than everything today if you pay for it ...5 dollars a month.... http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/buy-small-business.aspx?WT.z_O365_ca=Buy_online-software_en... really works on everything and no hazzle anymore using different devices as mobiles, computers. Total sync of everything....I like thunderbird but it is simply not going to evolve...just as email client thunderbird can be the best. For the rest, Thunderbird been sleeping for almost a decade..
