OVM and database licensing

Hello all,
I've got a 4 Oracle VM server pool containing Oracle database VMs and application servers VM. I've placed all my database VM on one server of the pool and I deactivated HA, DRS, etc. In that case, is it ok to license only this physical server with oracle database licenses ?
Thank you for your answer.

Yes. You must pin the # of CPU you have license for. If you're just going to license the entire server CPU count, then I'd say you'll be okay without pinning.

  • Oracle database licenses for 32 bit and 64 bit ?

    Quick question on Oracle Licensing.
We have brought Oracle database license for 10g few years ago. We had 10g 32-bit database installed and its working fine.
Now we are in the process of migrating our hardware to 64-bit, since Oracle database has a 64-bit database, we are planning to move our database as well to 10g 64-bit database.
Now as far as licensing is concerned, do we need to buy new licenses in order to use the 10g 64-bit database ?
or its the same license for 32 or 64 bit database - so we are good ?

You can migrate your Oracle license from one platofrm to another even if the platform is sold by a different manufacturer. If you have cpu licenses though you have to take into consideration the different way Oracle charges for some vendor CPU's. That is not all CPU's are considered equal.
The licensing information is available at oracle.com and your sales representive should be able to help if necessary. We just open an SR and ask Oracle for assistance to get the necessary software.

  • Choose the appropriate and cheapest license for Apex

    Dear Experts,
If a customer likes Oracle Apex and want his system to be built with this technology on his private server but he has problems in expensive license of Oracle Database compared with MS SQL Server.
    If the customer has:
    - Planned No. of users: 25 user - max of 10 concurrent users.
    - Server Processor: Intel Xeon(R) CPU X3440 @ 2.53GHz 2.53GHz - 64bit
    - Server RAM:  4GB (I think it is too low for his number of users)
    I have the following questions:
    1) What is the cheapest and appropriate Oracle Database License to buy for this customer to build Oracle Apex system for his users?
    2) What are the cheapest and recommended upgrades in the server processor and RAM in order to provide a good performance for the system with that number of users?
    Best Regards
    Mahmoud

    Dear Scott,
Thank you for reply. If we look at:
Comparison between Oracle Database 12c Editions
We will find the following features not available in Express Edition compared to Standard Edition One
    1) High Availability - Fail Safe
    2) High Availability - Server Managed Backup and Recovery
    3) Performance and Scalability - Integrated Clusterware
    4) Security Defense In Depth - Proxy Authentication
    5) Application Development - Oracle Flashback Data Archive
    6) Application Development - SQL Pattern Matching
    7) Application Development -  Temporal Database
    8) Application Development - Java Support
    9) Manageability - Oracle Enterprise Manager
    10) Manageability - Oracle Automatic Storage Management
    11) Integration - Based Replication
    12) Unstructured Data Management - Multimedia
    13) RAM - 1GB
    - Do I need to plan for some of those features in the first or second release of system? especially those related to backup?
    - Is RAM 1 GB too low for good performance according to the number of concurrent users?
    - Do I need to upgrade or replace the Server HW specially processor to have a good performance or upgrading RAM only is enough?

  • DataGuard and EM licensing issue

    Hi,
Anyone can tell me, if I setup a standby server using DATA Guard, how many user licenses should I purchase for the standby server?
For the tuning pack, configuratin pack for EM, if only one dba access the EM dbcontrol website, how many user license should I purchase?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Anyone can tell me, if I setup a standby server using
DATA Guard, how many user licenses should I purchase
    for the standby server?
The only legal response to this comes from ORacle. You need to get a quotable Oracle source to give you an answer.
One such source is at http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/specialtopics.html
For the tuning pack, configuratin pack for EM, if
only one dba access the EM dbcontrol website, how
many user license should I purchase?
    Same answer as above.
That said, in the docs on the site referenced above, as well as in the Licensing docs for the database, Oracle states the EM Packs must be licensed to the same level as the database being managed, regardless of the number of people using the pack ... 2 CPU database license means 2 CPU Diag Pack license.
And that makes a peculiar kind of sense - the use of the pack benefits ALL the DB users, not just the DBA using the pack.

  • 10g Database Licensing

How does the 10g database licensing works, when you download you gets everything. Now for which part we need license beside the database..

Whenever you click on the Accept License Agreement You are bound by the OTN License Agreement, which explicitly say, among many other things,
LICENSE RIGHTS We grant you a nonexclusive, nontransferable limited license to use the programs only for the purpose of developing a single prototype of your application, and not for any other purpose. If you use the application you develop under this license for any internal data processing or for any commercial or production purposes, or you want to use the programs for any purpose other than as permitted under this agreement, you must contact us, or an Oracle reseller, to obtain the appropriate license. We may audit your use of the programs. Program documentation may be accessed online at http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation.
    Additionally ...
    You may not: - use the programs for your own internal data processing or for any commercial or production purposes, or use the programs for any purpose except the development of a single prototype of your application;
    - use the application you develop with the programs for any internal data processing or commercial or production purposes without securing an appropriate license from us;
    - continue to develop your application after you have used it for any internal data processing, commercial or production purpose without securing an appropriate license from us, or an Oracle reseller;
    - remove or modify any program markings or any notice of our proprietary rights;
    - make the programs available in any manner to any third party;
    - use the programs to provide third party training;
    - assign this agreement or give or transfer the programs or an interest in them to another individual or entity; - cause or permit reverse engineering (unless required by law for interoperability), disassembly or decompilation of the programs;
    - disclose results of any program benchmark tests without our prior consent; or, - use any Oracle name, trademark or logo.
Conclusion is, read the tiny letters before you agree on something.

  • Clusterware Pricing and/or Licensing Information for 3rd Party Applications

    Hi,
Can anyone please direct me to Oracle Clusterware 11g pricing and/or licensing information in the scenario where the Clusterware solution is intended for use with a 3rd party application and not with Oracle Database?
Also, in the case where Clusterware is used with Oracle Database 11g Enterprise, does it require a separate license?
I appreciate if anyone can provide me with a link to this type of information.
    Thanks in advance!
    Best regards,
    Johan

OK - So if there is no RAC installed and you all you need to do is provide Cold failover for an Oracle database instance then yes the Clusterware license is at no charge in this scenario.
    briefly :
you install a Clusterware home - as if you were goin gto create a RAC database
then you install a database software home on each node.
    then you create the instance.
there is a good paper here : http://otn.oracle.com/clusterware
See : Using Oracle Clusterware to Protect A Single Instance Oracle Database 11g (PDF) February 2008
If the software you are wanting to protect 'talks' to an Oracle database
You can either install on the RAC nodes - using the clusterware that is already there
    OR
install Oracle clusterware onto 2 or 3 or more new nodes to build an new application cluster and then install your application.
Either way both meet the terms of the license doc.

  • UPK database licensing

Does UPK 11.1 require additional Oracle database licensing or does the UPK developer and client licensing cover the database? I can't find that specific information.
    Thanks

    Hello,
I've removed my previous answer as I realized it would not necessarily apply to all customers. You should contact an Oracle Sales representative for specific and detailed information about licensing.

  • Asking database license for SAP IDES

    Hi all,
My company is planning to install SAP IDES ECC6, and we are now filling the form for SAP Demo License Request. The form said that we need to fill the 'database license' that we currently has.
    - Does anybody know, do we need to have existing and separated database license to install IDES? I thought the database license (either Oracle, MS SQL, or DB2) is free/included in the IDES DVD that we're requesting?
    - Can anybody suggest how big is database size required for ECC6 IDES? As Oracle 10g special edition (XE) is free to be used up to 4 GB.
    Many thanks for your advice.

  • Database license

    Hi,
Is that true that the database license is only for production? So, could I start the development and buy the production licenses when the development is done ?
    Thanks,
    TPC

In this case, I think, we cannot buy the Oracle support, right ? Could be possible to buy only the Oracle support ? Or, could be a better idea to buy a minimum license for production (for 2-4 processors) and buy the other 30 at the end of development ?
    Thanks.

  • 8.0 to 8.2 upgrade: ¿would it affect configuration and/or licensing?

    Hello team:
I am planning the upgrade of an ASA 5550 Active/Passive cluster from 8.0 to 8.2 according to the "zero downtime upgrade" documentation available in the web.
I do not have another cluster for comprehensive testing, but I executed a simple migration procedure on a tiny 5505 and neither licensing features nor the configuration (the command sintax) were affected by this process. I know this is something to care about if you go to 8.3, but this is not my case.
I browsed the release notes of 8.2(5) and no special disclaimer was found by me with respect to this release. So everything should work just fine, but I would like to double check for input with respect to these two subjects:
    1.  ¿Will the licensed features (vpn, concurrent connections, etc) be preserved?
    2. ¿ Will the configuration be preserved ?
Your recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Rogelio Alvez

An ASA 8.0 to 8.2 upgrade should not affect configuration or licensing. I have done it many times without any problem. Just follow the published procedure carefully and you will be fine.
While you are working on the boxes, I recommend putting ASDM 6.4(7) on them (if it is not already in use) as it is the recommended version for all 8.x releases.

    Hi Paluri
Here is the difference between SAP locks and Database locks, i will try to find the solution to your code.
    Regards
    Ashish
Database Locks: The database system automatically sets database locks when it receives change statements (INSERT, UPDATE, MODIFY, DELETE) from a program. Database locks are physical locks on the database entries affected by these statements. You can only set a lock for an existing database entry, since the lock mechanism uses a lock flag in the entry. These flags are automatically deleted in each database commit. This means that database locks can never be set for longer than a single database LUW; in other words, a single dialog step in an R/3 application program.
Physical locks in the database system are therefore insufficient for the requirements of an R/3 transaction. Locks in the R/3 System must remain set for the duration of a whole SAP LUW, that is, over several dialog steps. They must also be capable of being handled by different work processes and even different application servers. Consequently, each lock must apply on all servers in that R/3 System.
    SAP Locks:
To complement the SAP LUW concept, in which bundled database changes are made in a single database LUW, the R/3 System also contains a lock mechanism, fully independent of database locks, that allows you to set a lock that spans several dialog steps. These locks are known as SAP locks.
The SAP lock concept is based on lock objects. Lock objects allow you to set an SAP lock for an entire application object. An application object consists of one or more entries in a database table, or entries from more than one database table that are linked using foreign key relationships.
Before you can set an SAP lock in an ABAP program, you must first create a lock object in the ABAP Dictionary.

  • Performance with MySQL and Database connectivity toolbox

    Hi!
I'm having quite some problems with the performance of MySQL and Database connectivity toolbox. However, I'm very happy with the ease of using database connectivity toolbox. The background is:
I have 61 variables (ints and floats) which I would like to save in the MySQL-database. This is no problem, however, the loop time increases from 8ms to 50ms when using the database. I have concluded that it has to do with the DB Tools Insert Data.vi and I think that I have some kind of performance issue with this VI. The CPU never reach more the 15% of its maximum performance. I use a default setup and connect through ODBC.
    My questions are:
    1. I would like to save 61 variables each 8-10ms, is this impossible using this solution?
    2. Is there any way of increasing the performance of the DB Tools Insert Data.vi or use any other VI?
    3. Is there any way of adjusting the MySQL setup to achieve better performance?
Thank you very much for your time.
    Regards,
    Mattias

First of all, thank you very much for your time. All of you have been really good support to me.
    >> Is your database on a different computer?  Does your loop execute 61 times?
Database is on the same computer as the MySQL server.
The loop saves 61 values at once to the database, in one SQL-statement.
I have now added the front panel and block diagram for my test-VI. I have implemented the queue system and separate loops for producer and consumer. However, since the queue is building up faster then the consumer loop consumes values, the queue is building up quite fast and the disc starts working.
The test database table that I add data to is created by a simple:
    create table test(aa int, bb char(15));
...I'm sure that this can be improved in some way.
I always open and close the connection to the database "outside the loop". However, it still takes some 40-50 ms to save the data to the database table - so, unfortunatly no progress to far. I currently just want to save the data.
Any more advise will be gratefully accepted.
    Regards,
    Mattias

  • I just want itunes music and database to be on external HD not internal

What am I doing wrong. I have itunes music library on my external HD and my itunes preferences say that my itunes music folder location is just that. It's about 41 GB. Ok, but why on my system drive is there an itunes folder in the default user music folder and it is 7 GB and there are certain titles in there that did not make it to the external. The database files are in there as well. Shouldn't everything be located in the external itunes music folder including the database files ? How do I have itunes automatically update the external HD folder and put the database files in there as well and stop using the internal system drive for storage and database.

I did that a while ago. But now it seems there are 7 GB of stray files. Is there a sync feature that moves only the itunes files that are outside the designated itunes folder, in my case they are living on the system drive for some reason...
